It was high noon at the prestigious Bear Creek Golf Club when Dan Silva (pictured) of South Suburban Golf Course and Trenton Daum of Heather Ridge Country Club began the final match of the 51st CGA State Boys’ Match Play Championship. It would be three and one half hours and 15 holes later that Silva would sink his par putt to secure a 4 and 3 victory and what he calls his “biggest win ever.” Silva parred the 9th hole to go 3-up in the match when Daum bogeyed. Another bogey by Daum on 12 put Silva 4-up, then Daum put his tee shot on the par-3 13th into the water hazard and Silva went dormie (5-up with 5 holes to play). The resilient Daum won the 14th hole to stay in the match, but could only tie Silva on the 15th and the match ended 4 and 3 in Silva’s favor. When asked what he attributed his victory to, Silva identified his “…strong iron play and (his) ability to remain focused on every single shot.” Silva’s name will be etched on the CGA Boys’ Match Play trophy, joining 50 other names that include Hale Irwin and Brandt Jobe.
Earlier in the day, Silva defeated Calder Hendrickson of Sunset Golf Course by the same score of 4 and 3 to advance to the final round. Daum defeated Michael Baird of Plum Creek Golf & Country Club 3 and 2 in the final four to advance to the final match against Silva. Daum received the CGA Silver Medal as finalist.
In the Bobby Jones Flight, Ryan Anderson of Greeley Country Club defeated Nick VanEtten of Pine Creek Golf Course 4 and 3 to take the title. The final match of the Jack Nicklaus Flight provided the day’s most dramatic finish. Brandon Dornseif of Lakewood Country Club was four holes down with four to play against Nick Nosewicz on his home course when the drama began. Dornseif proceeded to win the next four holes to force a playoff, then drained an 8-foot putt on the first playoff hole to complete an amazing comeback to win the title.
