Denver ““ Tyler Parsloe of the Meadows Golf Club defeated Gunner Wiebe of Cherry Hills Country Club 2 and 1 in the final match to win the CGA Junior Boys’ Match Play Championship at Indian Tree Golf Course. For Parsloe, who will be a junior at ThunderRidge High School, this was his first CGA championship victory and his “biggest win yet.”
The match itself, in which only five of the 17 holes played were halved, was reminiscent of a featherweight boxing match with each contestant trading blows. Weibe, with his father (former PGA Tour regular Mark Wiebe) in attendance, struck the first blows early taking a 3 up lead after the first four holes. Parsloe countered by winning four consecutive holes and halving the ninth hole to hold a 1 up lead at the turn. Wiebe won the 11th hole with a par to make the match all square, then Parsloe came back and won the 12th to regain the lead only to have Wiebe take the 13th to be all square again. Parsloe continued the exchange with a birdie on 14 to regain the lead, then delivered a punishing blow by winning 16 to go 2 up. The match ended on 17 when Wiebe conceded Parsloe’s par putt to halve the hole and give Parsloe the 2 and 1 victory.
Earlier in the day, Wiebe defeated Alex Kephart of Eisenhower Golf Club 5 and 4 in the semifinals to advance to the final match. Parsloe had to go to 21 holes to win his semifinal match against Justin Spray of the Country Club of Colorado.
Adam Pladson of Mira Vista Golf Course defeated Paul Berry of Haymaker Golf Club 4 and 2 in the final match to win the First Flight. Pladson defeated Bryon Olshock of Bear Creek Golf Club 2 and 1in the semifinals to earn his place in the final match, and Berry defeated Shane Jonnsonn of South Suburban Golf Course by the same score to advance to the finals.
