Wyndham Clark, considered one of the top junior golfers Colorado has produced, will try to take his game to another level while competing for one of the perennial powerhouses of college golf.
The Valor Christian High School junior recently gave a verbal commitment to Oklahoma State, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation’s men’s college polls. The Cowboys have won five tournaments so far this season.
Clark, a resident of Greenwood Village, can sign a national letter of intent with OSU as soon as Nov. 9 during the early signing period, then will start competing for the Cowboys in the fall of 2012.
“When it came down to my choice, it mainly had to do with the coaches,” Clark told Golfweek.com. “I just felt like that was the place for me, so it just felt right.”
Clark took an unofficial recruiting trip to Stillwater, Okla., in late February, and also has visited Texas, Oregon and Duke.
Clark already has accomplished plenty in his young career, including last year when he became the youngest winner of the CGA Stroke Play Championship since 1971. In national and international assessments of junior golfers, he’s currently ranked 11th by Junior Golf Scoreboard and 14th by AJGA Polo.
Clark has particularly stood out with his performances over the last two years.
In 2009, he finished third in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship and went to the final 16 at the U.S. Junior Amateur. He also won a state high school title as a sophomore.
Last year, Clark took another step by placing third in the Junior PGA Championship and the Western Junior, both top-level junior events. And, in open-age tournaments, he not only won the CGA Stroke Play, but he was co-medalist in a U.S. Amateur qualifying tourney in Aurora.
In November, Clark was named the CGA’s Junior Player of the Year.
Clark, who plays out of Cherry Hills Country Club, was recruited by many of the top college teams in the nation, but opted for coach Mike McGraw’s program at OSU. The Oklahoma State men have won 10 national titles as a team and have been runner-up 16 times.
Among the big-name players the Cowboys have produced over the years are Bob Tway, Scott Verplank, Hunter Mahan and Rickie Fowler.
