University of Colorado senior Jeremy Paul will take a break from the college golf season to compete for his native Germany in the 30th World Amateur Team Championship that will start Wednesday (Sept. 21) in Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Paul, who’s currently No. 111 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, in 2015-16 set a CU single-season record for stroke average (70.66). He was a Golf Coaches Association of America honorable-mention All-American.
Paul competed in the BMW International Open — a European Tour event — in June and finished 56th overall.
“It obviously means a lot to me representing my country in a world championship,” Paul told CUBuffs.com. “This is my first time playing in this event and I am really looking forward to it. There are some of the best amateurs in the world competing against each other and it is going to be a great test.”
Germany is one of 72 countries which will have representatives playing in the biennal WATC, including the defending champion U.S. The 72-hole event will continue through Saturday.
The best two scores — out of three players — each day will count toward a country’s team total.
(Sept. 24 Update) After Saturday’s final round of the 212-man tournament, Paul finished 48th individually at 2-over-par 288 (72-69-74-73).
