Jim Knous of Englewood was quick out of the gate in the second stage of Web.com Q-school, firing a 6-under-par 66 and sharing fourth place after Tuesday’s opening round in a tournament in Beaumont, Calif.
The former Colorado School of Mines golfer (pictured) posted six birdies in a bogey-free first round. Knous trails leader Andrew Yun of Chandler, Ariz., by four strokes as Yun carded a 62.
Other players with strong Colorado ties who shot in the 60s on Tuesday were University of Colorado senior golfer Jeremy Paul (68, 12th place) and Riley Arp of Fort Collins (69, 19th place).
The top finishers — a number to be announced — after four rounds will advance to the third and final stage of Q-school, Anyone who makes the final stage — set for Dec. 8-11 in Winter Garden, Fla. — will be guaranteed at least conditional status on the 2017 Web circuit.
