Teams from the University of Colorado and Colorado State University punched their tickets to the round of 16 with wins Monday in their opening matches at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Co-medalists Brittany Fan and Esther Lee from CU, the No. 3 seeds, scored a 2-up victory over 30th-seeded Meghan Stasi of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dawn Woodard of Greenville, S.C., in the round of 32. Fan and Lee (pictured in a USGA photo, with Lee at left) never trailed on Monday and were 3 up through four holes. But Stasi and Woodard were just 1 down going into 18 before the CU teammates birdied to make it a 2-up decision. Fan and Lee finished 1 under par for the day.
Meanwhile, 20th-seeded Katrina Prendergast and Ellen Secor, teammates at CSU, scored a minor upset with a 4-and-3 win over 13th-seeded Alden Wallace of Shreveport, La., and Libby Winans of Richardson, Texas in the round of 32. Prendergast and Secor never lost a hole on Monday and were 5 under par for 15 holes.
Both the round of 16 and the quarterfinals are scheduled for Tuesday.
