Jim Knous of Englewood didn’t make a long trip for nothing.
The former Colorado School of Mines golfer traveled more than 3,000 miles from home — to Bogota, Colombia in South America — to post one of the best finishes of his young Web.com Tour career.
Knous shot four consecutive sub-par rounds — 70-69-69-70 — to finish at 6-under-par 278 on Sunday in the Club Colombia Championship. The showing was worth $10,850.
Though Knous (pictured) ended up nine strokes behind champion Ben Taylor, he finished just three shots out of a second-place tie. On Sunday, he eagled the par-5 10th hole to go along with two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey.
It was the fourth top-20 finish in 29 career starts on the Web.com Tour for Knous, an NCAA Division II individual runner-up as a senior at Mines in 2012. His best Web showing was an eighth place at the Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae in August.
Elsewhere on the major pro tours, David Duval — who just moved back to Colorado after a short stay in Florida — missed the cut in his first PGA Tour start of the 2017-18 season. The former world No. 1 posted rounds of 79-76-81 for a 21-over-par 236 total at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am on the Monterey Peninsula in California.
Shane Bertsch of Parker, who was originally in the field at Pebble Beach, withdrew prior to the start of the tournament due to back problems. Former Fort Collins resident Sam Saunders finished 26th in the AT&T with a 7-under-par 280 total.
