Joining the list of competitors for the Open — which will award $100,000 to the winner — via Thursday’s qualifier at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster were Jon Kuzava of Littleton (3-under-par 68), amateur Braden Bentley of Colorado Springs (69), University of Northern Colorado golfer Li Chen of Broomfield (70), Andy Connell of Denver (70), Chase Nathe of Windsor (70) and Ryan Schmitz of Greenwood Village (70).
Kuzava advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying this year and Connell last year. Chen competed in last year’s U.S. Amateur.
Three players — Steve LeBrun of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., John Hurley of Tomball, Texas and David Muttitt of Albuquerque, N.M. — shared medalist honors on Thursday with 4-under-par 67s.
The final qualifying tournament for the Colorado Open will be Monday at Legacy Ridge. The Open itself is set for July 26-29 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in northeast Denver.

Ott (left), winner of the Colorado Junior PGA last month, defeated Connor Jones of Westminster 5 and 4 in his quest for two consecutive junior major titles in 2016. And Braden Bentley of Colorado Springs, the winner of the Colorado Junior Amateur in June, scored an 8-and-7 victory over Beam Boonta of Centennial.
But Perea upended Stewart, who finished eighth Friday in the boys 14-15 division of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Florida.
Meanwhile, the top eight seeds in the girls tournament received first-round byes on Monday. The top seed to play on Monday’s round of 32, No. 9 Marie Jordaan of Cherry Hills Village, fell to No. 24 seed Jenna Chun of Englewood in 19 holes.

]]>The Colorado Junior Match Play, the new iteration of the CGA and CWGA Junior Match Play Championships, will run Monday through Wednesday (Aug. 1-3) at The Ridge. Title matches are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Weinstein, the CWGA Junior Player of the Year who will play golf at Regis University beginning in the fall, won the first two girls JGAC majors of 2016, the Colorado Junior Amateur and the Colorado Junior PGA Championship. But a scheduling conflict — she’s competing in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships next week in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. — will keep her from attempting to extend her junior major win streak in Colorado.
But in the boys tournament, AJ Ott of Fort Collins and Braden Bentley of Colorado Springs will take aim at junior major victory No. 2 of 2016. Ott, soon set to begin his Colorado State golf career, claimed a seven-stroke win in the Colorado Junior PGA earlier this month. And Bentley prevailed by two in June at the Colorado Junior Amateur.
Also in the boys field are U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier Griffin Barela of Lakewood and Cole Krantz of Windsor, the top Colorado finisher at this week’s Junior America’s Cup.
In the girls event, Amy Chitkoksoong of Aurora will try to claim her second straight Junior Match Play title as she won the CWGA event as a 14-year-old last year. Two of her teammates on the CWGA’s Girls Junior America’s Cup team this week — Hailey Schalk of Erie and Caroline Jordaan of Cherry Hills Village — also are in the field. Schalk led the Colorado contingent at the GJAC.

The significance — both from a historical and novel standpoint — of Braden Bentley’s victory on Wednesday wasn’t lost on the Colorado Springs resident.
In winning the boys Colorado Junior Amateur — the first “major” of the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado, but also an outgrowth of the CGA Junior Stroke Play, which dates back to 1977 — Bentley appreciated the importance of the moment at Eisenhower Golf Club.
“It’s cool to be the first of a new era,” the 18-year-old said. “It’s cool to think I’m the first one of so many junior golfers that are going (to win these Junior Golf Alliance majors). It’s also good to be part of the tradition of the (CGA Junior) Stroke Play that’s been going on forever. Players like (current PGA Tour professional Mark Hubbard, the 2007 Junior Stroke Play champion) and so many others that are playing good golf at a high level that have won this tournament before. It’s cool that it means it puts me in good company.”
Bentley, a graduate of Mesa Ridge High School who’s going to play college golf at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., becomes the second straight Colorado Springs resident to win the boys state stroke play event as Isaac Petersilie prevailed in the CGA Junior Stroke Play last year.
Bentley kept all his challengers at bay with his putter coming down the stretch of Wednesday’s final round.
Bentley (left and above), a top-10 finisher in the 4A state high school meet last fall, held or shared the lead after all three days at Eisenhower Golf Club’s Blue Course. But it was five one-putt greens in the final seven holes Wednesday that gave him a two-stroke victory. He drained putts of 20 feet, 6 feet twice, 5 feet and 3 1/2 feet in that stretch to keep him in front despite several errant shots.
Bentley hit his drive on 12 right, into the native grass, but managed to get up and down for par, making a 20-footer. He also one-putted for par on the next hole, then needed a sink a 6-footer for bogey on 15 after having a fried-egg lie in the bunker. On 16, he hit his tee shot wide right again, this time into a bush, and had to take an unplayable lie. But there he got up and down from a greenside bunker for par. And he one-putted 17 for par after missing that green. His only hiccup with the flat stick came on 18, where he three-putted. But by that time he had a comfortable lead.
“With all the stuff that happened on the back nine (to Bentley), he only had one bogey from one of those holes (where he hit an errant shot),” said Daniel Pearson of Longmont, a runner-up who was paired with Bentley.
“The short game is definitely a staple for me,” said Bentley, who plays out of Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club at Fort Carson. “It’s something I lean on for the most part. But until the back nine today, my putting had been just atrocious. I’d been sticking (approach shots) right next to flags, then missing putt after putt. I couldn’t find the bottom of the cup all week long. Then on the back nine (Wednesday) it kind of switched around. I started hitting terrible shots and getting up and down and making really clutch putts down the stretch.
“It’s so relieving when you’re standing over a putt that you know is a big putt and you can see it drop right into the middle of the cup. There’s not a feeling in the world like it.”
Bentley’s second consecutive even-par 72 left him with a winning total of 1-under 215. Three players shared second place at 217: Pearson (left, 74 Wednesday), Ryan Zetwick of Castle Rock (69) and Dillon Stewart of Fort Collins (70).
Rounding out the top five on Wednesday was Coby Welch of Highlands Ranch, the 2015 CGA Junior Player of the Year, who checked in at 218 after closing with a 71.
Pearson, a Fairview High School senior-to-be who has verbally committed to play college golf for the University of Nebraska, finished fourth in the CGA Junior Stroke Play — the predecessor of this event — last year.
“I played well all week,” he said. “Today I just didn’t make any putts. I hit good putts, but nothing really went in. I hit the ball well all week. I just need to work a little bit on my putting I guess.”
Among those in attendance Wednesday were CGA executive director Ed Mate and his Colorado PGA counterpart, Eddie Ainsworth, a former PGA general manager at Eisenhower. The CGA and the Colorado PGA are co-founders of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado, and the CWGA has also helped make it a success. Staffers and/or volunteers from each organization worked the boys and/or girls tournaments this week.

The titles in both tournaments will be settled in Wednesday’s final round of the first “major” of the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado.
Bentley, a top-10 finisher at the 4A state high school tornament last fall, and Pearson, who placed fourth in the 2015 CGA Junior Stroke Play, are the only two players under par in the boys championship, both standing at 1-under 143.
Bentley, who has signed to play college golf at Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill., beginning this fall, shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday. Pearson, a senior-to-be at Fairview High School in Boulder who has verbally committed to the University of Nebraka, carded a Tuesday-best 71 which included five birdies.
Three back of the leaders, in a tie for third place going into Wednesday, are Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction (74 Tuesday) and Timothy Amundson of Littleton (73 in round 2). Coby Welch of Highlands Ranch, the 2015 CGA Junior Player of the Year, and Dillon Stewart of Fort Collins share fifth place at 147.
At the girls championship, Weinstein, who won the 5A state high school title last month, gave herself a cushion on Tuesday. Her 1-over-par 73, which featured 17 pars and a bogey on the 17th hole — put the Regis University signee at 4-over-par 148 heading into the final round.
Weinstein, the 2015 CWGA Junior Player of the Year, is five ahead of second-place Hailey Schalk of Erie. The 14-year-old Schalk made two birdies en route to a 75 and a 153 total.
No one else in the girls competition is under 160 as Sarah Hwang of Monument is at that figure after carding a 79, putting her in third place.
The leaders in the boys competition will tee off Wednesday at 9:36 a.m., while the girls will start at 9:48.

Bentley posted the only sub-par round of the day at Eisenhower Golf Club’s Blue Course, firing a 1-under-par 71 for a one-stroke lead in the boys tournament. Bentley played his final eight holes in 3 under par on Monday.
Four players share second place at 72 after the opening round of the 54-hole event: University of Colorado commitment Trevor Olkowski of Grand Junction, a runner-up in last week’s AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior; Daniel Pearson of Longmont, Ryan Zetwick of Castle Rock and Jake Welch of Highlands Ranch. Olkowski was 4 under par through 13, but went 4 over par coming down the stretch.
In the girls championship, Weinstein was one of three players to break 80 on Monday. The winner of the 5A girls state high school title last month, Weinstein opened with a 3-over-par 75, making a birdie and four bogeys on the day.
Jaclyn Murray of Grand Junction, a Regis Jesuit High School teammate of Weinstein, is in second place at 77. She eagled the par-4 fourth hole on Monday. Hailey Schalk of Erie, a 14-year-old who posted a top-10 finish at last week’s AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior, carded a 78, good for third place going into the final two rounds.
