Sam Marley won his second CGA championship in less than 10 months, and he’s still only 18 years old. Meanwhile, James Richardson claimed his first CGA title at age 37.

Whatever the case, the teammates from South Suburban Golf Course were both overjoyed to strike pay-dirt Sunday at the CGA Four-Ball Championship at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

“I’m 37. I should have been doing this (winning titles) when I was 18 — and I had my chances back then,” Richardson said. “This is a big one for sure.”

Marley and Richardson (pictured above), both of Centennial, reeled off five consecutive birdies Sunday in the better-ball event and chalked up nine overall in a bogey-free final round. After trailing by three entering the day, they closed with a 9-under-par 63 for a 21-under-par 195 total for three rounds.

Marley, who recently completed his freshman year on the University of Northern Colorado golf team, won the CGA Junior Match Play last July. Earning a second CGA title in less than a year was a nice bonus, especially at his young age.

“It’s exciting, definitely,” said Marley, an Arapahoe High School graduate and the son of South Suburban head professional Todd Marley. “The way we played today was pretty cool. But both of these wins are special.”

Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club, who competed in the 2011 U.S. Open, and Pat Diaz of Meridian Golf Club, who won the Four-Ball with Irwin in 2004, came in second Sunday at 197 after finishing with a 65 that featured nine birdies. (Irwin, in red shorts, and Diaz are pictured at left.)

Nick Nosewicz and Brian Richmeier of Meadow Hills Golf Course, who didn’t make a bogey for the first 36 holes and led after rounds 1 and 2, carded four bogeys Sunday and settled for a 70 and a 199 total, good for a share of third place.

“We were slow out of the gate and stumbled a bit, but we fought back,” said Richmeier, who with Nosewicz led by three going into the final day. “We’ll get ’em back next time.”

Joining Nosewicz and Richmeier at 199 were 2014 CGA Mid-Amateur champion Chris Thayer and Jadon Wiens of Bear Creek Golf Club, who closed with two consecutive 65s, and 2013 U.S. Amateur qualifier Kyle Danford of Fort Collins Country Club and Dave Johnson of Collindale Golf Club, who shot 67 on Sunday.

Though the 63 Marley and Richardson posted on Sunday was the second-best of the day — behind the 62 of 2014 champ Jared Bickling and teammate Stephen Baxter — the golfers from South Suburban initially thought it might not be good enough for the title.

“We knew it was a good round, but I didn’t think it was good enough to win it outright,” Richardson said. “Things came easy today, but my mentality was always more, more, more.”

Both teammates contributed significantly on Sunday as Marley made six birdies and Richardson four. But Richardson said Marley’s play during Saturday’s 68 made the difference.

“We would have never been in this position if he hadn’t played the way he did yesterday,” Richardson noted. “I didn’t make a single birdie and was hitting it everywhere. He made six birdies and we shot 4 under. If he doesn’t play good yesterday, we don’t have a chance.”

Richardson, brother of 1998 CGA Match Play champ Tom Richardson, teamed with Tom last year in his first CGA Four-Ball, placing 14th. James Richardson competed in the 1995 U.S. Junior Amateur, then when on to play golf at UNC.

As for Marley, it was his first time playing the CGA Four-Ball, so based on the results, he seems to have it down pat.

Humerickhouse Ties CGA Record https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/09/22/humerickhouse-ties-cga-record/ Sun, 22 Sep 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/09/22/humerickhouse-ties-cga-record/

CGA championships have been played since 1901, and until this weekend a grand total of two golfers had ever won the same CGA tournament four consecutive years.

On Sunday, Keith Humerickhouse joined the party.

The golfer who lives in Eagle and plays out of Glenwood Springs Golf Club matched a record by winning his fourth consecutive CGA Mid-Amateur, which is limited to players 25 and older.

But the feat goes beyond that. Looking at all CGA championships, Humerickhouse became just the third to “four-peat”. Now, only Humerickhouse, Walter Fairbanks (1902-05 CGA Match Play) and Rick DeWitt (1999-2002 Mid-Am) have won the same CGA championship four straight years.

Hale Irwin and Bob Byman — both of whom would go on to win on the PGA Tour — are among those who have earned three consecutive CGA championships, but only the aforementioned threesome have taken it to the next level.

On Sunday, the 37-year-old Humerickhouse had to fend off two other former CGA Mid-Am champs to earn the trophy at the Greg Mastriona Golf Courses at Hyland Hills in Westminster. Humerickhouse played the final seven holes of the Gold Course in 3 under par Sunday — making an eagle and a birdie — to card a 3-under-par 69, which gave him a two-stroke victory.

Since the former pro (pictured at left and above) regained his amateur status in 2009, his finishes in the CGA Mid-Amateur have gone third, first, first, first and first. Do you suppose Humerickhouse has this Mid-Am thing down pat?

“I feel like it’s my niche,” the left-hander said after winning his fifth CGA championship (including the 2011 Western Chapter). “I really like it. I feel comfortable out here. I feel like I can actually compete. The Publinks and the Stroke Play, it’s not that I don’t feel I can compete, but basically I’m playing a college golf tournament. These (college-age) kids are playing every day. You feel like you’re going to have to shoot 10 to 15 under to even sniff the lead. That’s how good they are.”

On Sunday, Humerickhouse finished at 6-under-par 210, while 2009 champion Michael Harrington of Kissing Camels tied Barry Erwin of Murphy Creek Golf Course at 212. Both Harrington and Erwin likewise closed with 69s, Harrington despite bogeying two of his last three holes Sunday.

The only other player to break par for the tournament was two-time Mid-Am winner Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club, who placed fourth at 214 after an even-par 72.

Brian Richmeier of Meadow Hills Golf Course, who held the lead after the first two rounds, struggled on the final day, playing his first 10 holes in 7 over par en route to a 5-over 77 and a share of seventh place at 217.

So while DeWitt still owns the record for number of CGA Mid-Amateur titles with seven, Humerickhouse has matched the Colorado Golf Hall of Famer in consecutive championships.

“We all know what kind of amateur Rick was (DeWitt is a professional now),” Humerickhouse said. “His name in Colorado golf history will be there forever. To be mentioned in the same category as him is pretty special.”

Unlike last year, when Humerickhouse won the Mid-Am by 12 shots, this one went right down to the wire. Harrington (pictured at left), playing a couple of groups ahead of Humerickhouse, led in the middle of the back nine, standing 6 under par overall through 15 holes.

But Harrington bogeyed 16 and 18 coming in.

“I bogeyed 18 (hitting his approach into the hazard fronting the green) because I was trying to fire at the pin,” he said. “I felt like I needed to make birdie to have a chance — which is exactly what it turned out I did need. I made bogey but it doesn’t bother me because I’d rather make bogey playing aggressive than hit it to the back of the green, two putt and find out I lose by one.”

The Colorado Springs resident also paid the price for a balky putter throughout his round.

“I hit it phenomenal, but putted terrible,” Harrington said. “You’re trying to charge, but I had 10-footers for birdie all day long and I left them short. I was shaping the ball the way I wanted to, I was ‘puring it’ all day long, hitting it long all day, but I just couldn’t make any putts.”

Unlike Harrington, Erwin (pictured at left) got about as much out of his round as he could on Sunday.

“I knew I was going to have to shoot about a 67 and that was exactly what I would have had to shoot to tie,” he said. “I really didn’t leave too many shots out there. I had one short birdie putt I missed coming in, but I’m really happy. This is my best finish in a CGA event.”

Also in the hunt on the back nine were Irwin and Ryan Axlund of CommonGround Golf Course. Irwin turned at 4 under for the tournament, but bogeyed three of his first four holes on the back nine. And Axlund still had a chance before finishing double bogey-bogey.

Meanwhile, Humerickhouse came on strong after bogeying Nos. 9 and 11. He eagled the 532-yard 12th hole for the second consecutive day, this time hitting a wedge from 170 yards to 10 feet and draining the putt.

“That was a huge putt for that to go down,” Humerickhouse said. “It turns out I really needed to make that. It got me back in charge of my round. I wouldn’t say it was a must make, but it was a huge make.”

Then on the 18th hole, after pushing his tee shot into the right rough, Humerickhouse was faced with a precarious 148-yard approach (pictured at left) to a pin tucked just over a canal that fronts the green. Again using a wedge, he cozied his second shot to 6 feet from the cup and finished with a birdie.

“I wasn’t trying to aim right at the flag,” he admitted. “It was a mistake, but it came off perfect. … It was a scary shot, no doubt.”

All in all, Humerickhouse was getting a big kick out of the competition — especially since he emerged in the top spot.

“It was so fun out there,” he said. “It’s awesome to win this thing, no matter how many there are in a row.”

Chapman Hits USGA Pay-Dirt Again https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/08/06/chapman-hits-usga-pay-dirt-again/ Mon, 06 Aug 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/08/06/chapman-hits-usga-pay-dirt-again/ Jeff Chapman dressed head to toe with the idea of carrying forward the good mojo he generated two weeks ago.

The Denver resident qualified for the U.S. Amateur on July 23 — earning a spot in a USGA championship for the first time in the new millennium — so he figured it only made sense to go with a similar look for Monday’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Sectional Qualifying.

Chapman therefore sported the same colors for his shirt and shorts that he did two weeks earlier. And, for good measure, he wore an orange U.S. Amateur cap his girlfriend gave him after he qualified. Actually, it was one of nine such caps that she gave him.

Whether it was the wardrobe or simply more good golf, Chapman was able to add a second USGA championship to his 2012 schedule by earning a berth in the U.S. Mid-Amateur on Monday.

Chapman shot a 3-under-par 69 in Mid-Amateur qualifying at Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City, sharing medalist honors with Tom Hart of Denver and Andrew Tapia of Raton, N.M. (The co-medalists are pictured, from left: Chapman, Hart and Tapia.) Also advancing to the national tournament were Jon Lindstrom of Broomfield and Brian Richmeier of Aurora, who carded 70s and prevailed in a six-man playoff for the final two berths.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur, which is limited to players 25 and older, will be contested Sept. 8-13 at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.

“I’m pleased,” the 36-year-old Chapman said. “After having qualified for the Amateur two weeks, that’s been all that I could think about. I’m ready for it to get here, but I’m pleasantly surprised with how I played today.

“It’s a pretty special summer. In 1999 I qualified for the U.S. Publinks, played in Pacific Coast Amateur and got invited to play in the USGA State Team. That was a special summer, but 13 years later at 36 years old and still competing with young kids that play every day, that’s fun.”

Chapman, who works in sales, eagled the 532-yard second hole — his 11th — from 3 feet, and added three birdies on Monday. It was just his third round in the 60s this year, but two of them have come in USGA qualifiers; he had a 67 in the U.S. Amateur Sectional at Inverness.

“We had a sales conference and went to San Diego for New Year’s,” Chapman said. “I played Torrey Pines and La Costa, and after walking off Torrey Pines I said, ‘I’m going to rededicate myself to my game this summer. I’m going to work on my game and try to play and see if I can be competitive.’ And I’m almost there.”

Lindstrom will be competing in his fourth U.S. Mid-Am, and roughly his 14th USGA championship. He made it to the round of 16 at the 2008 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

“It’s awesome,” said the 44-year-old, the CGA’s Mid-Amateur Player of the Year in 2008. “I feel like I play in all of the other state events just as a warmup to try to qualify for these things (USGA championships).”

Meanwhile, the other four qualifiers will be making their national Mid-Am debuts. In fact, Hart, Tapia and Richmeier will be playing in their first USGA championship of any sort.

Monday’s qualifier, which originally featured a field of 80 golfers, saw its final two berths decided in a playoff. Lindstrom advanced with a 4-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole, a par-4. And Richmeier earned the final spot when his punch 7-iron rode the wind and finished 2 1/2 feet from the cup on the par-3 second playoff hole, and he drained the putt.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for a very very long time,” said the 38-year-old Richmeier. “I’ve tried for a while. I’m super ecstatic. I knew that I had it in me and that eventually it would come through. Today it just worked out. This by far is my biggest accomplishment yet in golf, no doubt about it.”

Hart is a former University of Denver golfer whose family owns Cherry Creek Country Club, Plum Creek Golf Club and Deer Creek Golf Club. He teamed up with former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway to win the 2009 Trans-Mississippi Four-Ball, a tournament that draws a national field.

But this will be Hart’s first time competing at a USGA championship. In fact, he’d never before tried to qualify for any USGA events other than the U.S. Open.

“I just told myself to do it,” said Hart, who was 4 under par through six holes on Monday. “The past few years I got busy. I was playing good, but bailed on it. I just wanted to make sure I showed up today. That was the win for me — showing up.

“Playing in this will be awesome.”

Falling short in Monday’s playoff were Alex Kephart of Colorado Springs, Pete Mangold of Denver, Rob Clever of Firestone and Alex Buecking of Littleton, all of whom shot 70. Kephart and Mangold are the first and second alternates, respectively.

Buecking also was one of the odd men out in the U.S. Amateur qualifying playoff two weeks ago. As was the case then, he three-putted the first playoff hole to lose out.
