CGA Four-Ball – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf Tue, 24 May 2022 17:35:32 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/cga-favicon-150x150.png CGA Four-Ball – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf 32 32 Setting Themselves Apart https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/05/06/setting-themselves-apart/ Sun, 06 May 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/05/06/setting-themselves-apart/

It was a day of firsts at the CGA Four-Ball Championship on Sunday at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

Let’s count the ways:

— Jon Lindstrom and Richard Bradsby, both of Lakewood Country Club, became the first team to win consecutive CGA Four-Balls since Rick DeWitt and Mike Glaesel did the trick in 1998 and ’99.

— With a 23-under-par 193 total for three rounds, they set the tournament scoring record, relative to par, since the Four-Ball went to a 54-hole format in 2011.

— With the victory, Lindstrom became the first person to win the CGA Four-Ball at least four times. He had been tied for the most titles in the event, with Steve Irwin, another Lakewood CC member. Prior to the last two years, Lindstrom won in 2002 with Rick Larson and in 2012 with Dean Clapp.

Despite playing their last six holes in even-par on Sunday, Lindstrom and Bradsby prevailed by two strokes. They followed up their back-to-back rounds of 64 with a 7-under-par 65 on Sunday.

Through 54 holes, the partners never recorded a better-ball bogey. (They’re pictured above and below, with Lindstrom in the striped shirt.)

“I’m going to create a conflict for Lindstrom next year” for this event, runner-up Alex Buecking said with a smile on Sunday.

The victory at Legacy Ridge marked the 10th CGA championship for the 50-year-old Lindstrom, who has claimed four Four-Balls, three Mid-Amateurs, two Two-Mans (with Clapp) and one Mid-Amateur Match Play.

“I like winning CGA events, so that’s awesome,” Lindstrom said. “I like team events. There used to be the two-man event, and I won that a couple of times too. It’s a lot of fun playing with somebody (as a teammate).”

Meanwhile, the 49-year-old Bradsby owns two CGA titles, both in the Four-Ball. Lindstrom and Bradsby also finished second in the event, in 2014.

“It’s special absolutely” to win CGA state titles, Bradsby said. “It’s amazing.”

Bradsby provided the spark in Sunday’s final round by shooting a 4-under 32 on his own ball on the front nine, making six 3s on that side.

“Richard played great today,” Lindstrom said.

“And John was killing it the other two (days),” Bradsby added.

With Lindstrom throwing in a birdie, he and Bradsby posted a 5-under 31 on the front nine. Then Lindstrom drained an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 11 and Bradsby an 18-foot birdie on 12. Even with no more birdies after being 7 under through 12, it was good enough.

“Obviously the week was great,” Lindstrom said. “We did a good job of ham and egging it. There were three or four times one of us was out of the hole and the other guy ended up making birdie on that hole. It couldn’t have worked out better.”

As for their recent success in the Four-Ball, Lindstrom points to the two meshing as partners.

“We’re both members at Lakewood and we play a lot of golf together — both as opponents and partners,” he said. “We know each other’s games. We both go out and try to win it on our own, and if the other guy helps out, great. As opposed to putting pressure on, expecting the other guy to play well. We both do that really well, I think. Neither one of us gets pissed off if the other guy hits a bad shot.”

Claiming second place for the second time in the last three years on Sunday were Buecking, of Columbine Country Club, and Trent Isgrig of Cherry Hills Country Club. Buecking, who won the 2009 title with Irwin, also placed fourth last year, with Sean Crowley.

Buecking and Isgrig, who shot a tournament-low 62 in the first round, had sterling opportunities at birdies at holes 6, 7, 9 and 10 on Sunday, but didn’t convert any of them, costing themselves a chance at the title.

They closed with a 66 for a 195 total.

“We had a good time, but we’re a little disappointed,” Isgrig said. “The turning point was 6, 7, 9 and 10. We should have made at least two or three (birdies), and we didn’t make any of them. That was the difference, no doubt.”

Jake Staiano, the 2017 CGA Player of the Year, and Pierce Aichinger of Glenmoor Country Club fired an 8-under 64 on Sunday to tie for third place at 197. Staiano also placed third last year, with then-Colorado State University teammate Blake Cannon.

Also at 197 were Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course and Chris Thayer of Walnut Creek Golf Preserve — winners of a CGA Match Play and two CGA Mid-Amateurs, respectively — and Alan Boyko of CommonGround Golf Course and Dean Siskowski of Collindale Golf Course. Nosewicz and Thayer carded a 66 on Sunday, and Boyko and Siskowski a 68.

(Pictured above, from left, are Nosewicz, Buecking and Thayer.)

In all, six teams out of 60 broke 200 for the 54-hole event.

Eyeing 2 in a Row https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/05/05/eyeing-2-in-a-row/ Sat, 05 May 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/05/05/eyeing-2-in-a-row/ Jon Lindstrom and Richard Bradsby of Lakewood Country Club, attempting to become the first team in the 21st century to claim back-to-back titles in the CGA Four-Ball Championship, will take the lead going into Sunday’s final round.

The defending champions, who still haven’t made a better-ball bogey through two rounds, fired their second straight 8-under-par 64 on Saturday, leaving them at 16-under 128 at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

Should Lindstrom, a three-time CGA Mid-Amateur champion, win on Sunday, he’ll become the first four-time CGA Four-Ball champ, breaking a tie with Steve Irwin. Lindstrom previously won in 2002, ’12 and last year. (The 2017 winners are pictured, with Lindstrom at left.)

The last players to win two straight CGA Four-Ball titles are Rick DeWitt and Mike Glaesel, who prevailed in both 1998 and ’99.

But two teams are just a stroke back of the leaders after Saturday’s second round, and another is three behind.

First-round leaders Alex Buecking of Columbine Country Club and Trent Isgrig of Cherry Hills Country Club backed up their Friday 62 with a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday, putting them at 15-under 129. They made six better-ball birdies and both bogeysed the 14th hole on Saturday.

Also at 129 are Alan Boyko of CommonGround Golf Course and Dean Siskowski of Collindale Golf Course, who shot the low round of day 2, a 9-under 63. With Siskowski posting a 66 on his own ball, the pair recorded nine better-ball birdies in round 2.

Chris Thayer of Walnut Creek Golf Preserve, winner of two CGA Mid-Ams, and Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course, who claimed the 2015 CGA Match Play title, stand in fourth place at 131. They carded a second-round 64 despite a better-ball bogey on the par-3 eighth hole.

The 54-hole championship will conclude on Sunday.

Make It a Record 3 for Irwin https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/10/09/make-it-a-record-3-for-irwin/ Sun, 09 Oct 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/10/09/make-it-a-record-3-for-irwin/ Teaming Up https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/04/28/teaming-up/ Tue, 28 Apr 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/04/28/teaming-up/

It will be four-ball galore over the next two weeks, both locally and nationally.

Between now and May 13, four big four-ball championships will be contested in Colorado or by the USGA, with Colorado competitors involved. First up are the separate CGA Four-Ball and Senior Four-Ball tournaments, the first CGA championships of 2015, set for Friday through Sunday (May 1-3). Then the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball will be held May 2-6 in San Francisco. Last but not least, the first U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball will be played May 9-13 in Bandon, Ore.

(It should be noted that though the CWGA won’t have a four-ball event in the next couple of weeks, it holds three four-ball tournaments annually: the Mashie, Brassie and Niblick.

The men’s and women’s U.S. Four-Balls are the first additions to the USGA championship schedule since 1987.

Here’s a brief rundown of the four-ball events — which are essentially two-person better-balls, either in stroke play or match play — that are set for the next two weeks:

— CGA Four-Ball at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster and CGA Senior Four-Ball at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, each 54-hole event running Friday through Sunday (May 1-3).

A total of 92 players (46 teams) are registered for the Four-Ball at Legacy Ridge. While 2014 champions Keith Humerickhouse and Jared Bickling won’t return as a team — Humerickhouse is in the field for the U.S. Four-Ball — Bickling will play at Legacy Ridge with new partner Stephen Baxter.

Other former champions in the field are Jon Lindstrom (2002 and ’12), Steve Irwin (2004 and ’09), Alex Buecking (2009), Dave Johnson (2006), Jim Doidge (2005) and Pat Diaz (2004). Irwin will team with Diaz again this year. Doidge will partner with Michael Harrington, the 2014 CGA Player of the Year.

In the Senior Four-Ball at Todd Creek, 102 competitors (51 teams) 50 and older are signed up. Included are defending champions David Delich and Bruce Hogg, who prevailed by three strokes last year. Also back are 2013 winners Kelly Crone and Larry Netherton, who also claimed the title in 2009.

Other former champs in the field are Daniel Dymerski (2012), John Applegate (2011), Sean Forey (2003 and ’08) and Scott Radcliffe (2003). Forey and Radcliffe will team up again this year.

— U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at the Olympic Club in San Francisco May 2-6.

A total of 4,468 golfers (2,234 teams) submitted entries, and qualifying was held at 51 sites from last August through March.

The field at the Olympic Club will feature 128 teams, which will play 36 holes of stroke play, with the top 32 teams advancing to match play beginning on May 4.

Five teams in the championship include at least one Coloradan:

Robert Polk of Parker and Bill Fowler of Lakewood

Alex Kephart of Colorado Springs and former Colorado Springs resident Nick Tarasiewicz

Keith Humerickhouse of Eagle and Tom Abell of Oregon, Wis.

Jeff Chapman of Denver and Andrew Tapia of Raton, N.M.

Gus Lundquist of Parker and Trevor Sluman of Rochester, N.Y.

Polk and Fowler, both 50-somethings, shared medalist honors in qualifying at Colorado Golf Club with Kephart and Tarasiewicz last September. (The four are pictured together above.) Polk, 59, will be the oldest player in the field at the Olympic Club.

Lundquist and Sluman are University of Louisville teammates, playing for coach Mark Crabtree, a Colorado Golf Hall of Famer. Sluman is a nephew of Champions Tour player Jeff Sluman. They were medalists in an Oct. 8 qualifier in Mason, Ohio.

Humerickhouse and Abell were medalists in an Oct. 1 qualifier in Hartford, Wis.

— U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball at Bandon Dunes in Oregon May 9-13.

Qualifying for the inaugural Women’s Four-Ball took place at 28 sites from August through March.

Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster and Gillian Vance of Lakewood (left) will take a break from the high school season to play in the national championship. They shared medalist honors last October in a qualifier at Heritage at Westmoor in Westminster.

Kupcho, the 2014 CWGA Player of the Year, will play college golf at Wake Forest in the fall, while Vance will be on the University of Colorado roster.

All told at Bandon, 64 teams will play two rounds of stroke play, with the low 32 teams advancing to match play, which begins May 11.

Late Surge Nets CGA Four-Ball Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/05/04/late-surge-nets-cga-four-ball-title/ Sun, 04 May 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/05/04/late-surge-nets-cga-four-ball-title/

Three holes earlier, Keith Humerickhouse had uncharacteristically bladed a bunker shot over the green. Now, on the 18th hole at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, with the CGA Four-Ball Championship on the line, the left-hander remembered his poor shot all too well.

With a narrow strip of green running away from him, a big lake on the other side of the putting surface, and his playing partner having hit into the water, the former playing professional worked a little magic.

He cozied his sand shot down to within 2 feet of the hole and made the putt for a birdie.

That gave Humerickhouse and partner Jared Bickling a one-stroke victory in the season-opening CGA Four-Ball.

“The shot of the tournament for me was the bunker shot on 18,” said Humerickhouse, winner of the last four CGA Mid-Amateur titles. “That bunker shot was awesome. That (bladed sand shot on 15) was basically my last thought going into that bunker shot. And the (one on 15) was a cakewalk compared to that one — no green, the slant going right toward the water. My partner hit it in the water, so I was like, ‘Here we go.’ But the shot (pictured at left) came off awesome.”

It led to the third consecutive birdie by Humerickhouse and to his sixth CGA title, while Bickling won his first.

Humerickhouse, who plays out of Glenwood Springs Golf Club, and Bickling, from Gypsum Creek Golf Course, shot the low round of the tournament, an 8-under-par 64, on Sunday to rally for the championship.

Second-round leaders Jon Lindstrom and Richard Bradsby of Lakewood Country Club pulled into a tie for the top spot with a birdie on the 15th hole.

But after Lindstrom drained an 18-foot birdie putt on 16, Humerickhouse holed a 15-foot birdie to keep things all square. Humerickhouse then sank an 8-foot birdie on the 17th hole to give his team the lead for good. And on 18, after Bickling had hit his second shot into the water, Humerickhouse showed steady nerves making his winning birdie.

“This is awesome,” said Bickling, who is 38 years old, like Humerickhouse. “This is our third year playing this event. The first year we were garbage, the second year we were not quite so garbage, and then this year … We don’t come out here to just play golf; we come here to win.”

Humerickhouse and Bickling’s 64 on Sunday gave them an 18-under-par 198 total for three days.

Lindstrom and Bradsby closed with a 66 in the scratch best-ball event to place second at 199. Nick Nosewicz and Heath Andersen of Meadow Hills Golf Course finished third at 202.

Humerickhouse and Bickling started Sunday with a bogey, and Humerickhouse bogeyed the second hole. But Bickling’s 20-foot birdie there gave the team a spark, and the two made nine birdies on the last 17 holes.

“That (birdie) calmed us both down,” said Bickling, pictured in the dark shirt at left, with Humerickhouse.

Humerickhouse, who shot 70 on his own ball each of the three days, relished sharing the title with Bickling.

“We play a lot of golf together,” the left-hander said. “With him as my partner, I feel like we can contend every time we play. To finally get it done, it’s awesome. I feel really good for him because it’s his first one. Every time you win one of these it’s great because the field is so good.

“We played really good as a team today — really good. If somebody was in trouble, we picked each other up. It was ham and eggs for sure today.”

Lindstrom-Clapp Team Up for Another Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/05/06/lindstrom-clapp-team-up-for-another-title/ Sun, 06 May 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/05/06/lindstrom-clapp-team-up-for-another-title/

When it comes to CGA team championships, Jon Lindstrom and Dean Clapp are certainly no strangers to the leaderboards.

Even if they aren’t winning tournaments, they always seem to be in the hunt.

On Sunday at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, they finished in the top five in the CGA Four-Ball Championship for the fourth straight year, a stretch which includes a runner-up showing following a playoff in 2009. But it’s safe to say this one stands out because they left with the first-place trophies.

“We kind of got the monkey off our back; we’ve been close a few times,” noted Clapp, a 39-year-old sales manager who plays out of Meadow Hills Golf Course.

Sunday marked Lindstrom and Clapp’s third CGA team championship together as they won the 2009 and 2010 titles at the since-discontinued CGA Two-Man Team event.

At the Four-Ball, Lindstrom and Clapp led wire-to-wire and posted a one-stroke victory. They made just one bogey in 54 holes of the better-ball event in carding rounds of 64-65-69 for a 15-under-par 198 total.

Tristan Sanders and Tim Kratz of CommonGround Golf Course shot 62-67 on the weekend to finish in second place at 199.

That one-stroke difference was hard-earned as Lindstrom-Clapp had to scramble for pars a couple of times coming down the stretch on Sunday. And Lindstrom’s chip-in birdie at No. 10 didn’t hurt either.

“All three days we kind of ham-and-egged it,” said Lindstrom, a 44-year-old insurance broker who plays out of the Heritage at Westmoor. “We pretty much knew where we stood (on the leaderboard) teeing off on 16 today. At that point we figured at worst case we were tied, so we thought if we could par out, we’d be in pretty good shape.”

And they did just that, though it took some nice up-and-downs for par.

This marks the second CGA Four-Ball titles for both Lindstrom and Clapp (pictured above), who won with different partners in 2002 and 2005, respectively. Lindstrom also captured the championship at the 2008 CGA Mid-Amateur.

The Four-Ball senior division title on Sunday went to 64-year-old Jerry Kidney of Overland Golf Course and 65-year-old Daniel Dymerski of Columbine Country Club, though it took five extra holes to settle it. Dymerski made a 15-foot birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole (No. 14) to finally end it in the matchup with Guy Mertz and Tony Workman of the Fox Hill Club. Mertz had a putt nearly identical to Dymerski’s to extend the playoff further, but it trickled just left of the cup.

“I have to be totally honest — I think I pulled that putt a little bit,” Dymerski said. “I didn’t expect it to break as much as it did, but I pulled it.”

On the fourth playoff hole, Workman could have won it for the Fox Hill pair, but he pulled a 4-foot birdie attempt.

Kidney and Dymerski (pictured just above) closed with a 67 Sunday as Dymerski chipped in twice during the round. They posted a 10-under 203 total, tying them with Mertz and Workman, who closed with a 68 on Sunday.

It was the fourth CGA Four-Ball senior division title for Kidney, who won with another partner in 1998, ’99 and 2002. He’s also captured the 2011 CGA Senior Stroke Play Championship and the senior division of the 2005 CGA Two-Man Team — with yet another teammate.

“I go through partners left and right,” Kidney joked. “They can only put up with me for so long.”
