CGA Stroke Play – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf Thu, 08 Sep 2022 19:08:50 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/cga-favicon-150x150.png CGA Stroke Play – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf 32 32 Familiar Venue https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/30/familiar-venue/ Sat, 30 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/30/familiar-venue/ The name has been tweaked, but one trend continues for arguably the CGA’s most prestigious championship.

The tournament which for decades had been known as the CGA Stroke Play will now be called the CGA Amateur Championship presented by Webster Investment Advisors. The idea for the name change was the CGA tournament committee’s desire to designate major championships, in this case in the open-age division.

But while some things change for the event that dates back to the 1930s, others remain the same.

Most notably, the CGA Amateur this year will return to a site it has frequented more than any other over the last 40 years, before which CGA records of sites for the championships aren’t complete.

This year’s tournament will be held Aug. 4-7 at Boulder Country Club. It will mark the sixth time BCC has hosted the CGA Amateur since 1978. The next-most-visited course for the championship since ’78 has been Lakewood Country Club, which has hosted five times in that period.

In the new century, the CGA Amateur will have been contested at BCC three times in the last 11 years — in 2006, 2010 and 2016. In both ’06 and ’10, the title was settled in a playoff, with Pat Grady prevailing 10 years ago and Wyndham Clark claiming the title in 2010. In the latter case, it was a particularly notable championship as Clark was a 16-year-old when he won, and Jim Knous fired a course-record 10-under-par 60 in the final round to force a playoff.

As in previous years, next week’s CGA Amateur will be a 72-hole affair, with a starting field of 84 cut to the low 40 players and ties after two rounds.

The 2016 tournament will be somewhat unique in that, as of Friday, only one former champion was in the field, 2015 winner Chris Korte, a University of Denver golfer.

Among the others who are entered are 2016 CGA Match Play champ Nathaniel Goddard, who finished second last year in the CGA Am; 2016 U.S. Amateur qualifiers Kyler Dunkle and Colin Prater; 2016 CoBank Colorado Open low-amateur Jimmy Makloski; 2004 CGA Player of the Year Steve Irwin; 2015 U.S. Am match play qualifier Jake Staiano; and 2015 CGA Mid-Amateur winner Jon Lindstrom.

The 2015 CGA Stroke Play champion shot a 1-under-par 71 on Monday, giving him a 1-under 143 total, good for a one-stroke lead over Felipe Strobach of South Dakota State. Korte made three birdies and two bogeys on the day.

In the team competition, DU slipped into a tie for seventh place in the nine-team event. At 35-over-par 611, the Pioneers trail leader South Dakota State by 27 shots.

The final round of the Summit League tournament will be held Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the field was set Monday for the women’s NCAA Division III Championships, and top-ranked Rhodes College in Memphis, which features former Colorado 5A girls high school champion Mackenzie Cohen, will head the field. Changes Afoot https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/12/21/changes-afoot-2/ Mon, 21 Dec 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/12/21/changes-afoot-2/ One tournament will go by the wayside, others will be renamed, and one will be retooled slightly, according to the CGA’s recently-released 2016 championship schedule.

Gone, after a run of just four years, is the CGA Mid-Amateur Match Play, which was won twice by Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs. Filling the 24-man field with the top mid-amateur players proved difficult, so the CGA opted to discontinue the championship, which was limited to players 25 and older.

Meanwhile, two longstanding CGA championships will undergo name changes. What had been the CGA Stroke Play will become the CGA Amateur. And what was the CGA Senior Stroke Play will become the CGA Senior Amateur.

The CGA tournament committee wanted to designate major championships in three divisions — open-age, mid-amateur and seniors — which led to the decision, said Dustin Jensen, managing director of operations for the CGA. Those CGA majors going forward will be the CGA Amateur, the CGA Mid-Amateur and the CGA Senior Amateur.

The CGA Amateur, set to be played for the 80th consecutive year in 2016, is set for Aug. 4-7 at Boulder Country Club. The 30th Mid-Am will be Sept. 23-25 at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora. And the Senior Amateur will be contested for the 45th time Sept. 6-8 at The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden.

It should be noted that the CGA Match Play, the association’s oldest championship, will continue its long run, having been held every year since 1901. In 2016 it will be played a little earlier than normal, June 20-24 at Lone Tree Golf Club.

Also still intact is the CGA Senior Match Play, which dates back to 1970. Next year it will be May 23-26 at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont. One tweak is that the Super-Senior Match Play will be the same dates but at a different site, West Woods Golf Club in Arvada.

One championship that will be tweaked is what was previously known as the CGA Father/Son. The tournament will become the CGA Parent/Child and will be open not only to teams including father/sons, but to father/daughters, mother/sons and mother/daughters. In 2016 the Parent/Child is set for June 4-5 at Rollingstone Ranch Golf Club in Steamboat Springs.

In addition, CGA leadership set up the 2016 championship schedule — along with those in 2017 and ’18 — so as to avoid date conflicts with USGA championships, which has been an issue on occasion in the past.

Irwin Left Impression in 1963 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/08/09/irwin-left-impression-in-1963/ Fri, 09 Aug 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/08/09/irwin-left-impression-in-1963/ Given the impression Hale Irwin made 50 years ago this summer at the CGA Stroke Play Championship, it seemed only appropriate that he make a guest appearance at the tournament half a century later.

The three-time U.S. Open champion attended Friday’s second round of the Stroke Play at Pinehurst Country Club to watch his son, Steve, compete in the event. Steve Irwin, the 2004 CGA Match Play winner, shares 18th place at the halfway point at Pinehurst following rounds of 72-73 for a 5-over-par 145 total.

Fifty years ago, in the months after Hale Irwin won the Colorado state high school title while at Boulder High School, he put on a clinic at the CGA Stroke Play that made an indelible mark on some of his fellow competitors.

John Hamer, like Irwin now a member of the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame, put Irwin’s golf abilities as a then-18-year-old into perspective.

Hamer, who like Irwin was a University of Colorado golfer during the 1960s, was starting to ponder whether he’d eventually take a shot at the PGA Tour. And at the 1963 CGA Stroke Play, he said he finished with a very respectable 6-under-par total for 72 holes.

Hamer placed second that week, but suffice it to say he wasn’t a close runner-up. Irwin won the tournament — by 15 strokes.

“I remember thinking there was probably a few other guys out there like Hale, so that ended those thoughts (of turning pro),” Hamer said. “If I had known how good Hale was, though, I might have tried it.”

That 1963 victory was the first of three in a row by Irwin in the CGA Stroke Play — at that time an unprecedented feat in the tournament. To this day, only one other player has won three straight — Bob Byman — and coincidentally, he too grew up in Boulder.

Like Irwin’s performance 50 years ago made an impression on Hamer, it still registers for Irwin — more so than his second and third Stroke Play titles.

“That was a lot of years ago, but I remember that first one; that made an impression on me,” Irwin said Friday.

“I was an upstart young guy and then there was the old guard — guys like Les Fowler and Jim English. I was relatively new to Colorado and I happened to have a very good tournament. I do remember playing awfully well.”

Of course, as Irwin is quick to note, it didn’t hurt that the tournament was played at what is now known as Flatirons Golf Course, which was Hale’s home course.

“You look at tournaments that get you started down a successful path, and that one kind of got me going,” he said.

Irwin would finish his amateur career with four CGA titles — he won the 1966 Match Play at Boulder Country Club by defeating fellow CU golfer Larry McAtee, the three-time defending champion, 5 and 4 in the 36-hole final.

Irwin, of course, has gone on to win an NCAA title while at CU, then 20 times on the PGA Tour (including the 1974, ’79 and ’90 U.S. Opens) and a record 45 times on the Champions Tour. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1992.

The CGA and CWGA now operate the Hale Irwin Elite Player Program out of CommonGround Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the golf associations.

Big Rally Nets Brown CGA Stroke Play Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2011/08/14/big-rally-nets-brown-cga-stroke-play-title/ Sun, 14 Aug 2011 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2011/08/14/big-rally-nets-brown-cga-stroke-play-title/ It seemed like a game of miniature golf gone terribly awry. For the life of him, David Schroeder couldn’t keep his ball from rolling back down the formidable ridge on the 15th green at CommonGround Golf Course.

Four times, Schroeder agonized as his ball refused to stay on the upper tier of the two-tier green — where he wanted it. The result was a snowman — a quadruple-bogey 8 — that melted away the Broadmoor golfer’s chances of winning the 75th CGA Stroke Play Championship.

Those miscues, combined with a hard-charging start by Colorado State University golfer Zahkai Brown allowed Brown to overcome a six-shot deficit Sunday and win the title.

“You don’t want that to happen to your playing partner,” Brown said of Schroeder’s struggles on No. 15. “It’s hard to see. He was doing well. But it’s a competitive game. I don’t want to say I was happy, but it helped me win the title.”

Brown, from Indian Tree Golf Course, shot a 6-under-par 30 on the front nine and carded a 5-under 66 overall in the final round, which proved good enough for a three-stroke victory. The 21-year-old, who led after the first round, finished at 13-under-par 271.

Despite trailing by six going into Sunday, Brown caught Schroeder after just nine holes. But a birdie by Schroeder on No. 11 and a bogey by Brown on No. 12 had Schroeder leading by two going into the par-4 15th hole.

The former Fort Lewis College golfer (pictured at left) saw his approach shot trickle down off the top tier of the green, leaving him a difficult sidehill putt up and over a large ridge, with the hole cut not far from the crest of the ridge. Schroeder’s first putt didn’t stay up on the top level, rolling down the hill to the right and off the green.

On each of Schroeder’s next two shots — one played with a wedge and another with a putter — he failed to get his ball over the ridge and it rolled back toward him and off the green. His sixth stroke, which was further from the hole than his third, rolled 15 feet by the cup and he missed that comebacker.

For those keeping score, Schroeder took six shots to get down after having a 35-foot putt.

“I thought I hit a pretty good shot in there and it just caught the ridge and came down,” Schroeder said. “That pin was tucked so tightly on that massive ridge, but I thought I hit a pretty good first putt. It went down. After that it’s just disappointing how many it took me to get the speed right.”

Asked what he would have done differently if he had the hole to play over again, Schroeder said, “I maybe would have made sure that I got it on top of the ridge to ensure at worst a bogey. I guess I was trying to get a little greedy and hit a perfect putt.”

After Brown two-putted for par from the lower level of the green, he suddenly went from two behind to two ahead. And three pars later, he won his second CGA championship, following his 2009 victory in the CGA Public Links. The CSU senior-to-be also recently qualified for his second U.S. Amateur.

“It’s great because it’s something my brother didn’t do,” Zahkai (pictured at left) said of Zen Brown, who won the CGA Match Play and the Public Links but not the Stroke Play. “Growing up he was always better than me. Now that I’m surpassing him, it’s fun.”

“This is definitely a great win, being one of the CGA majors, and there are a lot of great players in the field. It’s one of my best wins for sure. It’s a big achievement for me.”

Schroeder, who led after the second and third rounds, shot a 4-over-par 75 Sunday and finished second at 10-under-par 274. Colorado School of Mines golfer Jim Knous, runner-up in the CGA Stroke Play last year, placed third this time at 275 following a final-round 67.

While Schroeder certainly opened the door for Brown, the CSU golfer made sure he was in position to take advantage with a stellar front nine on Sunday. In addition to making six birdies in his first nine holes — including four in a row from 6 through 9 — Brown missed two 3-footers for birdie.

With Schroeder shooting an even-par 36 on the front side, the tournament was tied with nine holes remaining.

“I just went out firing at every pin, and trying to make putts and it happened,” Brown said. “I had all the momentum and I was really excited. But I was telling myself to calm down and be patient. It’s not over. Keep going.”

Brown wouldn’t make a birdie on the back nine, and even though he was down two after his 12th-hole bogey, he certainly didn’t give up hope.

“We had a few tough holes coming up, then I saw that pin on 15,” he said. “I thought something could happen there. (Schroeder) had a tough putt coming across that mound.”

Schroeder had held at least a share of the lead since Friday, but that changed in a matter of minutes.

“I played 71 good holes,” said Schroeder, who made no worse than a bogey for those 71 holes. “It’s unfortunate that one hole cost me the whole tournament, but I’m proud of myself for how I played on 71 of the 72 holes.”

CommonGround Golf Course is owned and operated by the CGA and the CWGA. When Cherry Hills Country Club hosts the 2012 U.S. Amateur, CommonGround will serve as the second course for the stroke-play portion of the event.

Schroeder Threatens to Lap Field https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2011/08/13/schroeder-threatens-to-lap-field/ Sat, 13 Aug 2011 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2011/08/13/schroeder-threatens-to-lap-field/

After David Schroeder made a birdie putt on the 10th hole Saturday, improving to 7 under par for the day, Danny Riskam joked to playing partner Alex Buecking that they should use their best-ball score to try to keep pace with Schroeder.

It was that kind of performance for Schroeder Saturday morning at the 75th CGA Stroke Play Championship at CommonGround Golf Course. The former Fort Lewis College golfer (pictured at left) was 7 under par through 10 holes before the clock struck noon and he cooled down as the day heated up.

Despite going 3 over par in his last seven holes, the 22-year-old from the Broadmoor Golf Club still will take a hefty six-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Stroke Play.

“We were just getting hammered (after 10 holes),” said Riskam, a former playing professional. “If we would have played him best ball, we still would have lost. He could have shot 61 or 62 today.”

Actually, Riskam and Buecking’s best-ball score would have edged Schroeder by one on Saturday, but you get the idea.

Schroeder backed up his second-round 64 with a 4-under-par 67 on Saturday and stands at 14-under 199 going into Sunday’s final 18.

“You obviously want as much of a lead as you can get going into the final day,” said Schroeder, who is looking for his first CGA championship victory. “I’m glad I increased my lead by four shots today. That’s going to help.”

Only three players are within eight strokes of the lead, and all share second place at 205: Colorado State University golfer Zahkai Brown, the first-round leader (66 Saturday); Brian Dorfman of Cherry Creek Country Club, who plays for Georgetown University (67); and Riskam, from Columbine Country Club (70).

Brown, the 2009 CGA Public Links champion, used an eagle on No. 11 and birdies on his last two holes to post the low round Saturday at CommonGround, which is owned and operated by the CGA and the CWGA.

Schroeder used a 15-yard chip-in for eagle on No. 3 to start a stretch in which he played six holes in 6 under par. When he added a 12-foot birdie on No. 10, he was on pace to threaten the course record of 62. But he parred the par-5 11th after being just over the green in two, three-putted for bogey on No. 12, then bogeyed his final two holes.

Schroeder, Riskam and Buecking received a warning about slow play after the 13th hole, and hustled enough on the remaining holes to avoid a penalty.

“That definitely threw off my tempo a little bit,” Schroeder said. “We had to start playing ‘ready golf’ and play really quickly, but I don’t think that’s a good excuse for making two bogeys coming in.”

After posting consecutive nine-hole scores of 32-32-30, it’s a good thing for his opponents that Schroeder let up on the gas a little Saturday afternoon, or the lead could have ended up in double digits.

Schroeder’s closest challengers believe he can be caught on Sunday, but it won’t be easy.

“If he goes out and shoots 30 (on the front nine) like he did this time, we’re all playing for second,” said the 33-year-old Riskam (pictured at left). “But I never say it’s over. I’ve played enough tournament golf where I’ve seen a lot of crazy things happen, especially on the last day of tournaments. We’ll fire at some flags tomorrow and hopefully a few more putts go in than did today.

“If I’m going to catch David tomorrow I’ve probably got to shoot 32 on the front and I need a little help. But there’s no reason to hang back. There’s no reason to shoot at the middle of the green. I really didn’t come here to finish second. If that’s what happens, great, but I’m going to give it my best.”

Despite the big lead, one need look no further back than last year’s CGA Stroke Play to see why nothing has been settled yet. In the final round last summer, Jim Knous shot a course-record 60 at Boulder Country Club to force a playoff before losing to Wyndham Clark.

Schroeder, who is considering turning pro after he completes his final semester of college, has never won anything as big as the CGA Stroke Play.

Asked what it would mean to him if he prevails on Sunday, he said, “It would be huge — real exciting.”

Helping Schroeder’s cause this week has been having his dad, also named David, caddie for him.

“That’s been really great,” Schroeder said. “He’s been giving me a lot of good advice. He’s a really good player and he knows my game better than anyone. I play with him all the time. We talk over every shot and he’s been a huge help to me so far.”

Clark, who won last year’s Stroke Play at age 16, came into the third round of this year’s tournament in 10th place, but he was disqualified Saturday after having a distance-measuring device that didn’t conform to local rules.

Schroeder, Brown and Dorfman will tee off for Sunday’s final round at 9:12 a.m.

64 Gives Schroeder Halfway Lead https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2011/08/12/64-gives-schroeder-halfway-lead/ Fri, 12 Aug 2011 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2011/08/12/64-gives-schroeder-halfway-lead/ David Schroeder of the Broadmoor Golf Club vaulted into the lead of the 75th CGA Stroke Play Championship by shooting a 7-under-par 64 on Friday at CommonGround Golf Course.

The former Fort Lewis College golfer made eight birdies and one bogey Friday to reach the halfway point of the tournament at 10-under-par 132, which is good for a two-stroke lead. Schroeder has made 13 birdies in two days at CommonGround, which is owned and operated by the CGA and the CWGA.

Former professional Alex Buecking of Columbine Country Club fired a bogey-free 67 Friday to gain sole possession of second place at 134. Another former pro who plays out of Columbine, Danny Riskam, shares third place at 135 with Jim Knous of Ironbridge Golf Club. Knous, who earlier this week set the course record at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club in U.S. Amateur qualifying, posted a 66 Friday, while Riskam had a 68.

First-round leader Zahkai Brown of Indian Tree Golf Course and defending champion Wyndham Clark of Cherry Hills Country Club, fell back in the second round. They share 10th place at 139 as Brown carded a 73 and Clark a 72 on Friday.

The 41 players who stand at 147 or better survived the cut and advanced to the weekend. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.

Schroeder, Buecking and Riskam will tee off for Saturday’s third round at 9:23 a.m.

Brown Fires 66 to Grab Top Spot https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2011/08/11/brown-fires-66-to-grab-top-spot/ Thu, 11 Aug 2011 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2011/08/11/brown-fires-66-to-grab-top-spot/ Colorado State University golfer Zahkai Brown shot a 5-under-par 66 and 21 other players broke par Thursday in the first round of the 75th annual CGA Stroke Play Championship.

Brown (pictured), who earlier this month qualified for the U.S. Amateur for the second time, made six birdies and one bogey to take a one-stroke lead at CommonGround Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the CGA and the CWGA.

Wyndham Clark of Cherry Hills Country Club, who won the 2010 CGA Stroke Play at age 16, is one of six players tied for second place. The Valor Christian senior-to-be was 5 under par through 11 holes before dropping a stroke down the stretch.

Also at 67 are former professionals Alex Buecking and Danny Riskam, both of Columbine Country Club, along with University of Colorado golfer Derek Fribbs, Steve Connell of Riverdale Golf Courses and Brandon Bingaman of Black Canyon Golf Club.

Fribbs, who was 6 under par through 11, shot 67 despite back-to-back double bogeys on the second nine. Bingaman was also 6 under through 11, thanks in part to an eagle on No. 11.

The 84-man field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after 36 holes. The 72-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday.
