About 220 people attended Sunday’s 2013 Colorado Golf Awards Brunch at Pinehurst Country Club, where the CGA and CWGA honored many of their best.

Among those recognized were former University of Colorado golfer Derek Fribbs of Colorado National Golf Club, and Colorado State golfer Christina Spinzig of Hiwan Golf Club, the players of the year for the CGA and CWGA, respectively.

Fribbs won the final CGA Public Links Championship and advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur Public Links.

Spinzig claimed the CWGA Match Play title after one of the most lopsided finals in the 98-year history of the championship.

Several of the honorees were no strangers to earning player-of-the-year awards at the annual brunch. Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kim Eaton was recognized as CWGA Senior Player of the Year for the fifth consecutive time, and two of those years she was also overall CWGA Player of the Year. All told, this was Eaton’s ninth time being honored as CWGA Player of the Year or Senior Player of the Year.

During her acceptance speech on Sunday, Eaton announced that she’s retiring from CWGA championship competition, though she’ll continue to play tournament golf nationally and in her new home state of Arizona.

Keith Humerickhouse of Glenwood Springs Golf Club was the CGA Mid-Amateur Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and for the third time in the last four.

At age 16, Jennifer Kupcho of CommonGround Golf Course earned the CWGA Junior Player of the Year award for the second straight season.

And Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course, who recently turned 64, was the CGA Senior Player of the Year for the second time in the last three years.

Here’s a rundown of the 2013 honorees that were recognized on Sunday:

— CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year: Derek Fribbs (left) of Colorado National Golf Club. This marks the eighth time since 2000 that a CU golfer — or former Buff golfer — has earned the CGA Player of the Year honor, which is named for former CU coach Les Fowler. On that list, Fribbs joins Matt Call, Ben Portie, Kane Webber, Steve Irwin, Derek Tolan and Pat Grady (twice).

Fribbs put on quite a show in winning the final CGA Public Links Championship, shooting rounds of 65-66-62 for a 17-under-par 193 total, good for a six-stroke victory. He was also medalist in U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifying, going on to the round of 32 at that national championship.

Fribbs finished third in the CGA Stroke Play and went to the semifinals of the CGA Match Play, losing in 21 holes to former CU teammate David Oraee, the eventual champion.

— CWGA Player of the Year: Christina Spinzig (left) of Hiwan Golf Club. Spinzig, now a senior on the CSU golf team, left no doubt in winning the CWGA Match Play title this year, beating Michaela Breit 10 and 9 in the 36-hole final. The margin of victory was the largest in a CWGA Match Play final since at least 2005, before which record-keeping is incomplete.

Spinzig also had a strong showing in the CWGA Stroke Play, placing fourth.

— CGA Senior Player of the Year: Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course. Johnson also claimed this honor in 2011. This year, he became just the fifth person to win the CGA Senior Stroke Play and Senior Match Play titles in the same calendar year. And in both cases, he’s one of the oldest champions in the history of the events. Johnson also won the Colorado-based qualifying tournament for the USGA Senior Amateur. And he made it to the round of 32 at the CGA Match Play.

— CWGA Senior Player of the Year: Kim Eaton of Riverdale Golf Courses. In claiming this honor for the fifth consecutive year, Eaton swept the CWGA Senior Match Play and Senior Stroke Play titles. In both cases, she won going away — 6 and 5 in the Match final, and by 10 shots in the Stroke Play.

The two wins give Eaton 21 CWGA championship titles in her career.

But Eaton, now a full-time resident of Arizona, also had plenty of success outside of Colorado. In all, she won six state championships in 2013 — two state senior titles each in Colorado and Arizona, plus one in California. She also captured the open-division Arizona State Amateur Stroke Play championship.

In addition, Eaton advanced to the round of 64 of the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur.

— CGA Mid-Amateur Player of the Year: Keith Humerickhouse of Glenwood Springs Golf Club. Humerickhouse accomplished quite a feat in 2013, tying an all-time CGA championship record by winning a specific title for four consecutive years — in his case, the CGA Mid-Amateur.

Beyond that, Humerickhouse advanced to the round of 16 at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, beating two-time national Mid-Am champion Tim Jackson in the process.

— CGA Junior Player of the Year: Spencer Painton of Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. Painton had a stellar fall, winning three significant titles — the 5A state high school championship, the CJGA Tournament of Champions and the CJGA Collegiate High School Invitational.

Beyond that, Painton made it to the round of 64 at the U.S. Junior Amateur, where he fell to the eventual national champion, Scottie Scheffler of Dallas. This fall, Painton signed a national letter of intent with the University of Kansas.

— CWGA Junior Player of the Year: Jennifer Kupcho of CommonGround Golf Course. Kupcho, who had never played in a USGA championship before this year, competed in four USGA national tournaments in 2013: the U.S. Women’s Amateur, U.S. Girls’ Junior, U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links and the USGA Women’s State Team. Individually, she advanced to the round of 32 at the Girls’ Junior. And, along with Hannah Wood and Melissa Martin, she helped Colorado finish sixth in the USGA Women’s State Team Championship, tying the state’s best showing ever in the event.

Also team-wise, Kupcho joined with Calli Ringsby, Wood and Sydney Merchant in leading the CWGA team to a third-place finish in the Girls Junior America’s Cup, tying the state’s second-best performance ever in that event.

Kupcho won titles in the Colorado Junior PGA and the Big I Junior Classic state tournament, and she was runner-up in the 4A state high school meet and in the girls division of the CJGA Tournament of Champions.

— CGA Jim Topliff On-Course Rules Official of the Year: Tim Daniel of Eaton Country Club.

— CWGA Volunteer Award: Jan Fincher of Lake Valley Golf Club.

— CGA Master Rules Official: Jon Burnett of River Valley Ranch Golf Club.

— CWGA Most Improved Junior of the Year: Kellsey Sample of King’s Deer Golf Club, who lowered her handicap index from 36.8 to 19.1 in 2013.

— CGA/CWGA Development Program Partner of the Year: Aurora Academy.

— Solich Caddie & Leadership Academy Caddie of the Year: Melyzjah Smith.

Spinzig, Eaton Cruise to CWGA Match Titles https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/07/17/spinzig-eaton-cruise-to-cwga-match-titles/ Wed, 17 Jul 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/07/17/spinzig-eaton-cruise-to-cwga-match-titles/ Christina Spinzig of Hiwan Golf Club won her first CWGA championship on Wednesday, while Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kim Eaton claimed her 20th.

But they have this much in common: Neither left any doubt in their title matches at the 98th CWGA Match Play Championship at the Club at Rolling Hills in Golden.

Spinzig (pictured at left), a senior-to-be on the Colorado State University golf team, defeated CSU-Pueblo golfer Michaela Breit, 10 and 9 in the open-division championship match that was scheduled for 36 holes. And Eaton (pictured below), who like Breit grew up in Greeley, beat defending champion Mary Doyen of Foothills Golf Course 6 and 5 in the senior championship flight final. It was Eaton’s second senior title in this event following her 2010 win.

In both the open and senior championship flights, the margins of victory were the largest in the CWGA Match Play finals dating back through at least 2005, before which record-keeping is incomplete.

Winning a state amateur “is a big deal,” Spinzig said. “I came into this week feeling pretty good about my game, but actually winning is a whole different story. I’ve never won anything like this before, so I’m pretty excited.

“It makes me more excited for this coming year in college. It gives me a little more confidence that I can play with people who are better than me at this level.”

In a matchup of 21-year-olds, Spinzig birdied three of the first five holes Wednesday and was 1 under par at the turn of the first round. She struggled some on the back nine, but was 8 up on Breit through 13 holes.

Breit, who plays out of Highland Hills Golf Course, won two straight holes on the front nine of the afternoon round to narrow the gap to 7 down, but Spinzig’s even-par 36 on that side was enough to end the match after 27 holes.

“She threw three birdies at me in the first five holes; she played very well today,” Breit (pictured at left) said of Spinzig. “I didn’t play my best. The first two days I was rolling my putts in all the time. Today I rolled in a couple of (long ones) but the 7-footers that were dropping no matter where I was Tuesday and Monday just didn’t go in today. It happens. She put up one heck of a good score today.

“But just the fact that I can say I got second place (in a state amateur), I’m really happy with how I did this week.”

At Rolling Hills, where being above the hole can sometimes result in putting off the green — even for championship players — Spinzig probably had an advantage on the greens. That’s because she grew up playing Hiwan, which features similarly devilish putting surfaces.

“Usually putting is a pretty big strength,” said Spinzig (pictured at left with her trophy). “My home course is Hiwan, so I felt pretty comfortable out here. But when you’re above the hole putting downhill, it’s really hard to stop the putt anywhere. I think we all had a few of those putts this week.”

In the senior championship flight final, Eaton made a statement on the first nine by winning five straight holes (Nos. 3-7) with pars. Doyen cut the deficit with pars that won holes 8 and 9, where Eaton three-putted.

But Eaton birdied two of the first three holes on the back nine, then closed it out by halving No. 13 with a bogey.

“I didn’t play like I did the last two days,” said Eaton, who will turn 54 next month. “Before today my last four rounds had been under par. For me to play four or five (straight) days under par is usually unheard of.”

Doyen was seeking her second straight senior championship flight title, but she likewise wasn’t at her best on Wednesday.

“I knew I would really have to bring my ‘A’ game to have a chance,” the 61-year-old said. “Unfortunately, I didn’t. Kim is a great player. I did the best I could, but it wasn’t nearly enough today.”

This week, Eaton prevailed in her three matches by margins of 10 and 8 — winning every hole in the quarterfinals — 4 and 3, and 6 and 5.

For Eaton, who now lives in Arizona most of the year but is spending part of this summer in Colorado, Wednesday marked a victory milestone. It was her 20th CWGA title — or “the big 2-0” as she put it. She’s won four Stroke Plays, one Match Play, one Junior Match Play, three Senior Stroke Plays, two Senior Match Plays, and nine team events: six Brassies, one Mashie, one Chapman and one Mixed.

“Anytime you can keep winning state championships they’re always special,” Eaton said.

And her success is by no means limited to Colorado. Between Colorado, Arizona and California, she’s won 11 state senior individual championships since turning 50. Just this year, she’s claimed senior titles in California, Arizona and Colorado.

Thrice as Nice https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/06/28/thrice-as-nice/ Fri, 28 Jun 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/06/28/thrice-as-nice/ There were times in the last few years when Melissa Martin entertained thoughts of throwing in the towel regarding high-level competitive golf.

But after rebuilding her swing, then struggling to get back to peak form, a big payoff came on Friday.

The former University of Denver golfer joined an elite group of players who have won the CWGA Stroke Play Championship three times. For Martin, victory No. 3 came Friday at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster, where she pulled away on the back nine of the final round to prevail by an impressive eight shots.

“Three years ago I decided to rebuild my swing when I came to DU (from Colorado State), and it’s been like an uphill battle for three years,” Martin said. “I’ve been so sick and I’ve wanted to quit so many times, but I didn’t. It’s finally all paying off.”

The CWGA Stroke Play has now been contested 66 times and only six other golfers have won the title on at least three occasions: Carol Flenniken (eight), Janet Moore (five), Kim Eaton (four), and Sally Hardwick, Joan Birkland and Nicki Cutler (three each).

At 23 years old, Martin (pictured above and at left) became part of that group on Friday, having previously won the CWGA Stroke Play in 2009 and ’10.

After being tied with 2013 CWGA Junior Stroke Play champ Kelly Moran of Boulder Country Club after 10 holes of Friday’s final round, Martin put the pedal to the metal to pull away. The golfer from Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction made three straight birdies — all from inside of 10 feet — starting on No. 11 en route to shooting a 1-over-par 72. That gave Martin a 7-over-par 220 total at The Ranch, where the greens put even the best golfers to the test.

Moran, who will play college golf at William & Mary in Virginia beginning in the fall, closed with a 78 to share second place at 228. Also at that figure was 2012 champion Somin Lee of CommonGround Golf Course, who carded a 74 on Friday.

Colorado State University golfer Christina Spinzig of Hiwan Golf Club posted a final-round 77 for a 229 total, good for fourth place.

As for Martin, she coincidentally won at The Ranch, where her DU coach, Lindsay Hulwick, claimed the 2005 CWGA Stroke Play championship. Hulwick and DU assistant coach Erik Billinger were among those following Martin on Friday. Also on hand were several of Melissa’s family members who made long trips early Friday morning to watch: her mom and dad came in from Grand Junction and her aunt and uncle from Fort Morgan.

“That was really special,” said Martin, who graduated from DU earlier this month.

With Martin tentatively planning to turn pro later this year — possibly in time for the HealthOne Colorado Women’s Open in September — and compete in LPGA Tour qualifying, this state amateur stroke play may be her last.

Winning “is really special because I don’t know if I’ll get to play in this tournament next year,” she said.

For a while on Friday, it didn’t look like any sure thing that Martin would emerge victorious. Though none of her opponents ever took the outright lead, Moran (pictured at left) did tie it up in the middle of the final round.

The 17-year-old parred every hole on the front nine Friday to catch Martin, who started the day two ahead of Moran. And the two remained tied after matching bogeys on No. 10.

But Moran ended up shooting a 6-over-par 42 on the back nine and she made two double bogeys along the way. Her crisp iron shots from earlier in the round often fell short of the green on the back nine.

“Toward the end my irons really let me down a lot and I had some shorter putts that I missed that really hurt,” Moran said. “It was kind of snowballing a little bit.”

Holes 11, 12 and 13 basically decided the tournament as Martin holed birdie putts of 8, 4 and 6 feet while Moran went par-bogey-double bogey. That added up to a six-stroke swing in three holes.

“She’s an incredible player,” Moran said of Martin. “She’s really solid. If she makes a mistake, she fixes it right away. She’s one of the most solid players I’ve ever played with. It was definitely an honor to play with her given her credentials. She played a really great round and it was hard to compete with.”

But Martin (pictured at left) was frustrated in the middle of her round, especially with going 3 over par in four holes starting on No. 7.

“There were a series of bad shots or bad decisions and that bummed me out,” she said. “And Kelly was playing super solid. She was scrambling really well. I had to kind of ride (that out) and get back on the wave, and the approach shot on 11 is where I got back on it.

“I just really wanted to make good shots and make good putts because … I haven’t done it for so long. And once it finally comes together, you just want to keep doing it. Obviously I wanted to win, but I didn’t really think about that. I just thought about trying to get the ball into the hole.”

While Martin won the championship flight on Friday, four-time champ Eaton claimed the title in the first flight as a final-round 74 gave her a 231 total.
