Apparently, Glenn herself is nowhere near satisfied with that.

The Valor Christian senior and University of Colorado women’s golf recruit not only advanced to state and is on the leaderboard, but she’s the outright leader after Monday’s first round of the meet at Broken Tee Golf Course.

Glenn shot a 2-over-par 74 in the rain and wind on Monday and grabbed a one-stroke advantage heading into Tuesday’s final round. She hit 17 greens in regulation and closed with a 1-under-par 35 on the back nine.

A former high-level gymnast, Glenn is one shot ahead of Taylor Dorans of Broomfield (pictured) and Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy heading into the final 18.

Glenn started playing golf as a sophomore, but just a year later she placed ninth at state. And now this year’s tournament is the future CU golfer’s to lose.

“You just keep on cutting strokes back and improving,” she said of her rapid progress in golf. “That’s all you can ask for in this game.”

It wasn’t long ago that Glenn had her sights set on a gymnastics scholarship at the University of Denver. But that was before she broke her right leg during her sophomore year at Valor Christian.

Just a few months after suffering the injury, she competed in golf at the junior varisty level — while wearing a cast on her leg.

“I was on one leg, hobbling around and hitting away,” she said. “When you love something it doesn’t matter what obstacle is in front of you. You’ll go for success no matter what.”

Glenn said she won “about” five high school tournaments this season and averaged 75. But after her 74 Monday, she thinks she’s capable of going even lower in Tuesday’s final round.

“I’m hoping I can go under tomorrow,” Glenn said. “I had three three-putts today; my distance control was off a lot. Tomorrow will be better. I’m excited.”

Likewise for the other contenders.

Dorans, a University of Wyoming golf signee, has finished fourth once and sixth twice in her previous trips to state. Kupcho, who placed third last year at state, had the lowest state-qualifying round this season — in either Class 4A or 5A — in firing a 67 at Fox Hollow in the 4A Metro-West Regional.

Dorans missed two putts inside of 4 feet in her first 10 holes, but finished strong, going 1 under in her last seven despite closing with a bogey.

“I feel really good,” she said. “I’m coming out here just playing for myself — having fun, enjoying it, because it’s my last high school tournament. I’m kind of just embracing it and doing what I can. I can’t control what the other girls are going to do, but as long as I play for myself, I’ll be happy.”

Meanwhile, Kupcho thinks if she gets her putting homed in, she’ll be in good shape on the final day.

“I hit everything good (on Monday), but I just couldn’t putt,” she said. “The first four holes I had 5-footers on every one and only made one.”

Cheyenne Mountain leads the 4A team competition by five strokes after Valor Christian’s Laura Cohan forgot a penalty stroke and signed for an incorrect score. Therefore, the team couldn’t use her total of 86 among its three best individual scores. Instead, it counted a 95. That dropped Valor from first to second place as it has a 253 total, compared to Cheyenne Mountain’s 248.

Cohan will be able to compete in Tuesday’s final round and her score can be used for VC’s second-day team total.

Cherry Creek’s Ringsby Leads 5A By Two in Grand Junction: Cherry Creek junior Calli Ringsby took a two-stroke lead at the halfway point of the 5A girls state tournament at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.

Ringsby, who swept the CWGA Junior Stroke Play and Junior Match Play championships last year, fired a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. The junior, who made three birdies and four bogeys in the opening round, is seeking her first state high school title after placing second in 2011 and fourth last year.

Three players share second place at 75 heading into Tuesday’s final round. University of Colorado signee Claudia Davis of Arapahoe is tied for that spot with Jenni Chun of Highlands Ranch and Michelle Romero of Rock Canyon.

Defending champion Mackenzie Cohen of Cherry Creek opened with an 82 and shares 20th place.

Two-time defending 5A state champion Cherry Creek shot a 236 and leads the team competition by three over Arapahoe.

Ringsby, Wood Eye Elusive 5A Girls State Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/05/16/ringsby-wood-eye-elusive-5a-girls-state-title/ Thu, 16 May 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/05/16/ringsby-wood-eye-elusive-5a-girls-state-title/ Cherry Creek owns more state high school girls golf titles than any other program in Colorado, having won nine since girls golf was first officially sanctioned in the state in 1990.

The Bruins have also captured seven individual state championships over that period, including the first (by Jill McGill, who went on to win two USGA championships) and the last (Mackenzie Cohen).

Arapahoe, meanwhile, has claimed one state team title in girls golf (2010) and has never won the individual crown.

Considering how the Bruins and Warriors have dominated girls golf in the state recently, one or both schools figure to add to their trophy cases this year.

Cherry Creek and Arapahoe have monopolized the top two spots in the girls 5A state golf championships each of the last three years, with Creek winning the last two titles. And no one would be surprised if this year produced more of the same when the 5A meet is held Monday and Tuesday (May 20-21) at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.

Meanwhile, the 4A state tournament will be played those same days at Broken Tee Golf Course in Englewood.

Appropriately, the teams were separated by just one stroke at their state qualifying tournament, the Metro-East Regional at South Suburban Golf Course last week. And arguably the two favorites to win the 5A individual title, juniors Calli Ringsby of Cherry Creek and Hannah Wood of Arapahoe, placed 1-2 at that regional, with scores of 72 and 73, respectively. (Ringsby is pictured swinging above, while Wood is at left.)

Both golfers are in the Hale Irwin Elite Player Program at CommonGround Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the CGA and CWGA.

Ringsby won both the CWGA Junior Stroke and Junior Match Play Championships last year, and she was one of four girls who represented the U.S. in the USA-China Youth Golf Match last August. She’s finished second and fourth in her previous two 5A state tournaments.

Wood made an impression on the national stage in March when she won the prestigious Kathy Whitworth Invitational in Texas. In Colorado, she captured the CJGA Tournament of Champions last fall. At the 5A state meet, she’s placed 10th as a freshman and third last year.

Also a good bet to be in contention this year is University of Colorado signee Claudia Davis of Arapahoe, who’s had three top-11 finishes at state. Meanwhile, Cherry Creek’s Cohen, who pulled off a big surprise in winning the 5A individual championship last year, will defend her title.

At the 4A state meet at Broken Tee, Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy and Taylor Dorans of Broomfield figure to be the favorites for the individual title.

Kupcho, the 2012 CWGA Junior Player of the Year, won the CJGA 14-18 Junior Series Championship as a 15-year-old last year. She shot the lowest score at any regional — 4A or 5A — when she carded a 5-under-par 67 at Fox Hollow in the 4A Metro-West.

Dorans, who has signed to play college golf at the University of Wyoming, won the 4A Northern Regional title for the third time. She’s finished in the top six in each of her previous three trips to state.

Regis Jesuit, the 4A team champion a year ago, is now competing on the 5A level.

Here is a rundown of all the 2013 regional champions, and of the known college golf signees in the 5A and 4A fields.

Junior Champs May Battle the Elements Again https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/10/04/junior-champs-may-battle-the-elements-again/ Thu, 04 Oct 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/10/04/junior-champs-may-battle-the-elements-again/

The CJGA Tournament of Champions draws one of the best junior golf fields of the year in Colorado, both for boys and girls. But in recent golf seasons, it’s probably more remembered for crummy weather than stellar play.

Three years ago, the invitation-only event was canceled altogether due to inclement conditions. In 2010, a full 36 holes were played, but it was cold, drizzly and windy. And last year, the tournament was shortened to 18 holes because of the weather.

And — surprise, surprise — it looks like more of the same is in store this weekend as the 2012 edition of the Tournament of Champions is scheduled for the Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs.

“It’s unbelievable; it really is,” CJGA director of junior competitions Eric Wilkinson noted regarding the Tournament of Champions’ bad luck in the weather department.

The event is scheduled to include two rounds — one Saturday at the West Course and one Sunday at the East — weather-permitting. With cold and rain or snow forecast for Saturday, it’s possible the tournament could be reduced to 18 holes like last year. A determination will be made on Friday. (Friday update: Saturday’s round has been canceled, but tournament organizers are planning for play on Sunday.)

Assuming the event can be played, many of the state’s top junior golfers are scheduled to be on hand. Both of the 2011 champions — Jimmy Makloski (pictured above) of Pueblo Country Club and Claudia Davis (pictured at left) of Glenmoor Country Club — are set to defend their titles.

This year, Makloski has won the CGA Junior Stroke Play, the CJGA Junior Series Championship and the AJGA Junior at Fox Hill. And Davis teamed with Allie Johnston to claim the CWGA Mashie Championship earlier this year.

But that’s just the start.

Also in the boys field are 5A state high school champion Kyler Dunkle of The Club at Pradera, 3A winner Ben Moore, 2010 and ’11 3A champ Ethan Freeman, 2012 CGA Junior Match Play winner Andrew Romano of Colorado Golf Club and U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier Josh Seiple of Castle Pines Golf Club.

On the girls side, Calli Ringsby of Denver Country Club is coming off a sterling summer. She won both the CWGA Junior Stroke Play and Junior Match Play and she competed for America in the USA-China Youth Golf Match in California. Also scheduled to play is Jennifer Kupcho, the CJGA Junior Series Championship winner.

In addition this weekend, the CJGA will hold its Junior Ryder Cup for 11-13 year-olds at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora.

Twenty-four boys and girls — 12 each representing Team USA and Team Europe — will compete in nine-hole foursomes and four-ball matches on Saturday, then 18 holes of singles on Sunday. Among those playing is Coby Welch, the CJGA 11-13 Junior Series Champion. (Friday update: Like at the Tournament of Champions, Saturday’s action at the Junior Ryder Cup has been canceled. The plan on Sunday is to play three nine-hole matches: four-ball on the Kids’ Course, and foursomes and singles on the regulation course.)

Davis/Johnston Win CWGA Mashie Marathon https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/06/13/davis-johnston-win-cwga-mashie-marathon/ Wed, 13 Jun 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/06/13/davis-johnston-win-cwga-mashie-marathon/

It took 6 1/2 hours and 25 holes, but Allie Johnston and Claudia Davis gained their first lead in the title match of the CWGA Mashie Championship at about 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club in Aurora.

That coincided exactly with the time when the teenagers became champions of the four-ball match play competition, the CWGA’s first championship of the year.

Davis, a senior-to-be at Arapahoe High School, made a 3-foot birdie — draining her third consecutive pivotal putt — to give herself and Johnston a marathon 25-hole victory in their final against two other teenagers, Kathleen Kershisnik of Columbine Country Club and Patricia Lee of Lone Tree Golf Club.

“I still kind of feel like we should be playing,” said Johnston, a Rock Canyon High School graduate who plays out of Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course. “It was really fun. Mostly I think we were all just wanting to finish and eat.”

Davis (pictured above at left with Johnston), winner of the 2011 CJGA Tournament of Champions, waited until the end to make her major contributions. She made a 10-foot par putt on the 23rd hole to extend the match, holed a 35-foot birdie from behind the green on the 24th hole that Kershisnik matched with a 20-foot birdie of her own, then stuck her tee shot on the decisive 164-yard par-3 seventh hole 3 feet from the flag and won it with another birdie.

“I kind of lost my tempo and my swing for a few holes, but when it really counted, I felt like I stepped up and contributed and helped my teammate,” said the 17-year-old Davis. “It was just exhilarating to make the putt that you know counted to push it to the next hole.”

Kershisnik and Lee (pictured at left), who will play college golf at Wyoming and Georgetown, respectively, could have ended it on the 18th hole, but Lee left a 3-foot par putt short and the match was extended. It was one of several short putts that cost the team as Kershisnik missed a 2-footer on No. 9 and a 4 1/2-footer on No. 14.

But on the extra holes, both teams flourished on the greens. On No. 2, Johnston made a 15-foot birdie and Lee put a 7-footer right on top of her. On No. 4, Lee kept the match going with a 5-foot par. On 5, Davis drained her crucial 10-footer for par. And on 6, both Davis and Kershisnik made bombs. Then Davis closed it out with her 3-foot birdie on No. 7.

“I’m a little frustrated because it was kind of all for nothing in the end,” said Lee, a graduate of Highlands Ranch High School. “We both made crucial putts. We didn’t give any shots away so that’s a bonus, but we lost so that sucks.

“It could have been over a long time ago, but we didn’t give up, so that was good. (Davis) hit a really good shot on 7.”

While a 25-hole match is unusual, Kershisnik played one almost as long last year in the CWGA Junior Match Play, falling in 24 holes to Mikayla Tatman in the quarterfinals.

“All four of us played really well (on Wednesday), but obviously it’s not nice to be on our end,” said Kershisnik, who finished second in a playoff last month at the 4A state high school meet as a Regis Jesuit senior. “We got a few putts rolling (at the end), but it was a little frustrating because we had them around the hole a lot , but we couldn’t get them to fall” earlier in the match.

It was the second CWGA championship for Johnston, who earned CWGA Junior Player of the Year honors in 2011 after dominating the CWGA Junior Stroke Play, winning an AJGA event and qualifying for two USGA championships. The 18-year-old, runner-up in the 2012 5A state tournament, will be playing her college golf at Texas-San Antonio.

Davis, meanwhile, won an CWGA title for the first time. And it was a championship match she won’t soon forget — one in which the biggest lead for either team was 1-up.

“That was crazy,” the golfer from Glenmoor Country Club said. “It was a lot of fun. We really fought. I feel like it was equal. Both teams were trying really hard to just make that one extra shot count.

“I honestly didn’t know when it was going to end. (The scene on the 25th hole is pictured at left.) I thought we might play another 18 out there.”

In the end, Johnston and Davis prevailed in the championship flight of an event that featured 200 players and 13 flights overall. The championship flight included three players who are in the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame — Kim Eaton, Janet Moore and Lynn Zmistowski.

“I felt like there’s a lot of great players here, and to have two (teams) of juniors fighting for first place is really special,” Davis said. “I’m proud of myself and my teammate.”

Davis, Makloski Rule Among Champs https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2011/10/09/davis-makloski-rule-among-champs/ Sun, 09 Oct 2011 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2011/10/09/davis-makloski-rule-among-champs/

Jimmy Makloski had never played Cherry Hills Country Club before Sunday, so he was reveling in perhaps the best round of golf in his life.

Claudia Davis, meanwhile, was eager to leave the premises. After all, she had tickets to the Foo Fighters concert at the Pepsi Center Sunday night.

In both cases, though, the 16-year-olds did what they set out to do at Cherry Hills, which is to say win. Makloski and Davis recorded arguably the biggest victories of their young golf careers Sunday in winning the CJGA Tournament of Champions, which brings together many of this year’s top junior performers in the state.

Makloski, from Pueblo Country Club, shot a 5-under-par 67 in his first round ever at the storied course to take the boys division by four strokes.

Davis (pictured above), from Glenmoor Country Club, claimed the girls title by winning a two-hole playoff against Shinwoo Lee of Kennedy Golf Course.

The invitation-only tournament was originally scheduled for 36 holes, but it was shortened to one round due to poor weather on Saturday. But that didn’t put a damper on the season-ending event, especially not for the champions.

“This (victory) means a lot,” said Makloski, a junior at Pueblo South High School. “It’s a big honor, and to shoot a score like that at a hard course like this, it’s really good for me.”

Makloski (pictured at left) made six birdies and one bogey as he cruised to a relatively easy victory over CGA Junior Stroke Play champion and University of Northern Colorado golfer Steven Kupcho and Cole Nygren, runner-up in the 3A state high school tournament earlier this month.

Ethan Freeman, who outdueled Nygren to win his second consecutive 3A state high school title, and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs golfer Zach Tripp tied for fourth place at 73.

Makloski has shot one lower round in a tournament, but Sunday’s score ranks at the top of his personal list because it came at Cherry Hills, which will host the 2012 U.S. Amateur and the 2014 BMW Championship on the PGA Tour.

“This is not an easy course so it was definitely a really good round,” said Makloski, who qualified for the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur and played on Colorado’s successful Junior America’s Cup team this summer.

And the fact that he shot the 67 despite having not played the course before was especially impressive.

“It sort of seems to help me when I don’t see the course (beforehand),” he said. “I play smarter, think more and don’t do dumb stuff. Today, I got a bunch of good up-and-downs, and mostly it was that I putted better than I have all year. That’s been holding me back.”

As for Davis, she was worried about missing her Foo Fighters concert, particularly after early-morning frost caused all the day’s tee times to be delayed. Davis didn’t finish her round until evening, and then it turned out that she was in a playoff for the girls title.

Davis (pictured at left) and Lee matched 76s, then squared off in a sudden-death matchup that lasted until sunset. After both golfers saved pars with 6-foot putts on the first extra hole (No. 10), Davis two-putted for par and the victory on the par-5 11th as Lee carded a double bogey after blading her fourth shot out of a greenside bunker.

“I was thinking about (the concert during the playoff), but it kind of took some of the pressure off so it was a good thing,” said Davis, a junior at Arapahoe High School. “I was nervous, but I just persevered, I guess.”

Davis has been on a roll in recent months, having won four consecutive junior tournaments around the state. And the Tournament of Champions might very well have been the best of the bunch.

“I’d rank it pretty high,” the Greenwood Village resident said. “It had a good field, so I’m proud of my accomplishment today.”

Three players joined Davis and Lee in breaking 80 on Sunday: Calli Ringsby of Castle Pines Golf Club (78), Allie Johnston of Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course (79) and Katy Dyachkova of South Suburban Golf Course (79).
