Colorado girls state high school golf – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf Tue, 24 May 2022 17:36:56 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/cga-favicon-150x150.png Colorado girls state high school golf – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf 32 32 Girls State High School Roundup https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/05/22/girls-state-high-school-roundup/ Tue, 22 May 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/05/22/girls-state-high-school-roundup/

They called it the “Bryant Slam” when Davis Bryant and younger sister Emma jointly won all four Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado majors in 2017. So do you call it the “Sibling Sweep” when the pair wins both the boys and girls 5A state high school titles in the same school year?

Almost eight months after Davis Bryant claimed the 5A boys crown as a senior at Eaglecrest, Emma held up her end by capturing the 5A girls title as an Eaglecrest freshman on Tuesday at Boulder Country Club. It’s the first time two players with the same surname have won the boys and girls state individual prep championships in one school year.

“After he won state we were like, ‘Oh that would be so cool if Emma won state too. That’s never happened before.'” Emma Bryant recalled the family thinking. “I was like, ‘It could happen. I don’t know. I guess you’ve got to see where the cards fall.’ Getting the Bryant Slam was so cool, but us both winning state … He got an excellence medal at school. I probably will too. And thinking who won state this season, it’ll be, ‘Oh, Emma and Davis Bryant, they both won state.’ That’s so cool. I’m not exactly walking in his footsteps; I’m kind of building my own path a little bit. But I’m going back to his path a tad bit.”

(Emma and Davis Bryant are pictured above, while Emma celebrates with Eaglecrest teammates below.)

In helping keep the 5A high school titles all in the family, Emma Bryant became just the second freshman since 2002 to win an individual state high school title in Colorado girls golf. Holy Family’s Hailey Schalk did the honors as a freshman last season and repeated as 3A champion on Tuesday (see below, along with the 4A tournament details).

Bryant came into Tuesday’s final round three strokes out of the lead. But the 2017 Colorado Junior Match Play champion used a stellar front nine of 5-under-par 31 to shoot the first subpar round of her life on Tuesday — a 2-under 70. That led to a seven-stroke victory margin with a 1-under 143 total.

“I honestly didn’t feel like she could pull it off for two days and play as well as she did,” said Davis Bryant, the JGAC Boys Player of the Year in 2017 who followed his sister throughout Tuesday’s round. “She proved me wrong, and I’m happy she did.

“It’s like the Bryant Slam again. It’s so cool because we have a golfing family. Everybody in our family is involved with the game of golf and in the golfing community (dad Matt is PGA general manager at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club and mom Julie is the executive director of The First Tee at GVR). Everyone around us supports golf and wants the best for us. For what I was able to do last season, then Emma winning the Colorado Junior Match Play and really proving herself these last two days and taking it to another level, I’m so excited and proud. It feels awesome.”

In winning on Tuesday, Emma Bryant overcame home-club favorite Kelsey Webster of Fairview, a senior who will play her college golf at the University of Colorado beginning in the fall. Webster was 1 under par for the tournament through eight holes on Tuesday, but the par-4 ninth at her home club potentially ruined a fairytale ending to her high school career.

Webster (left) hit her second shot thin and over the green on the ninth, which features a putting surface that slopes heavily from back to front. The senior putted from the back fringe and off the front of the green and ended up taking five putts (two from off the green) to get down from 70 feet behind the hole, giving her a triple-bogey 7. And when Bryant birdied No. 9 with a big-breaking 25-footer, there was a four-stroke swing on the hole and the freshman went to the back nine with a six-stroke lead.

“Obviously it was a super disappointing day. I let my emotions get the best of me I think,” said Webster, the 5A Central Regional champion. “I couldn’t get the ball in the hole (on No. 9). I kind of played hockey. I was super duper bummed after that hole. Everybody has those holes; it’s just unfortunate that I had that hole at that time.

“I didn’t feel a ton of pressure (from playing on her home course in her final state tournament). I just wanted it really badly. That’s where my disappointment comes from. I know that I’m loved either way. It was just pressure on myself because I wanted it so bad.”

With first-round leader Katie Berrian of Regis Jesuit faltering early in the round — she was 4 over par through five holes Tuesday — Webster turned out to be the last challenger for Bryant. But the ninth hole turned things sour, and she ended up shooting a 9-over 81 and tying for third place at 8-over 152 overall. Also at that figure were Berrian, Leigha Devine of Fossil Ridge, Payton Canon of Cherry Creek and Meghan Vogt of Broomfield.

Morgan Ryan of Grandview finished second on Tuesday as a 73 put her at 6-over 150. Defending champion Amy Chitkoksoong of Grandview placed eighth at 153.

After making birdie on her first three holes on Tuesday and converting five overall on her front nine, Bryant suffered a couple of double bogeys on the back side before closing with a 10-foot birdie.

“After nine I was like, ‘I’m 5 under with nine holes to play. I can’t screw up that much, right?,'” Bryant said.

Whatever the case, the fact that her first sub-par round came in the final day at state en route to victory, it was a pretty special outcome.

“It feels so good to shoot under par,” said the 15-year-old, who picked up her fifth individual victory of the season on Tuesday. “I love it so much. I really wanted to shoot in the 60s today. Some of those holes really screwed me up (on the back nine) but I’m so happy to shoot under par.”

With some golf-related guidance over the years from her parents and Davis — with her brother particularly helping her out with the mental side of the game — the work paid dividends on Tuesday.

“Everything I’ve tried to help her with, it feels so good,” Davis said. “Days like today, everything we talked about and practiced, all the long nights of putting and chipping and a bunch of different competitions, it feels so good. It’s a great way to start a high school career, and hopefully she can continue to play as well as she did here.”

Meanwhile, Cherry Creek (left) claimed the 5A team title on Tuesday, notching victory No. 11 to the Bruins’ record total. But this was Creek’s first championship since 2013.

Cherry Creek finished with a two-day total of 46-over-par 478, two better than Grandview.

Schalk (3A) Still Undefeated in High School Ranks: Holy Family sophomore Hailey Schalk remained unbeaten in her two seasons of high school tournaments and kept alive her chances for an unprecented four Colorado girls state high school golf titles by repeating as 3A individual champion at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo.

Schalk, the 2017 GJAC Girls Player of the Year, came from behind on Tuesday to capture the crown. She shot a bogey-free 4-under-par 67 on Tuesday and finished at 6-under 136. She played the last 24 holes of the tournament in 8 under par.

Schalk became the eighth player to win at least two Colorado girls state high school titles, joining Lynn Ann Moretto (3), Ashley Tait (3), Jennifer Kupcho (2), Becca Huffer (2), Kelly Jacques (2), Jennifer McCormick (2) and Emily Wood (2).

First-round leader Caroline Jordaan, a junior from Colorado Academy, finished second, six strokes back of Schalk, after a second-round 74. It was Jordaan’s third straight top-three finish at state (second in 4A, third in 3A and second in 3A.

Last year’s runner-up, sophomore Charlotte Hillary of Kent Denver, placed third on Tuesday after a second-round 72 left her at 147.

Colorado Academy (62-over-par 488) claimed the 3A team title by seven over Kent Denver. It was CA’s fifth girls golf state title since 2007, and third straight.

18th Hole Pivotal in Choi’s 4A Victory: The 4A state tournament at the Country Club of Colorado proved to be a battle of attrition, with local player Maxine Choi of Cheyenne Mountain winning by one stroke at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

Choi posted rounds of 78-80 for a 16-over-par 158 total and finished a stroke ahead of defending champion Lauren Lehigh of Loveland. Choi’s 8-foot birdie on the final hole on Tuesday — combined with Lehigh’s bogey there — proved the difference. Lehigh struggled down the stretch, playing her final six holes in 7 over par in shooting 81.

Jessica Zapf of Windsor and Lauren Murphy of Glenwood Springs tied for third at 164.

Windsor captured the 4A team title by six over Glenwood Springs, while Loveland was another two back in third place. It was the Wizards’ first girls golf state team title in school history.

Girls State High School Golf https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/05/21/girls-state-high-school-golf-2/ Mon, 21 May 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/05/21/girls-state-high-school-golf-2/

Kelsey Webster graduated from Fairview High School on Sunday, then shot a 1-under-par 71 in front of many friends and family members on her home course Monday in the first day of the 5A girls state high school tournament. And on Tuesday she hopes to add another great memory to put an exclamation mark on her high school golf career.

“I graduated Sunday and had graduation parties on Saturday,” Webster said. “I haven’t been able to respond to text messages it’s been so busy, but it’s been fun. On Wednesday I’ll kick my feet back and watch some movies for sure.”

Possibly as a state champion.

But Regis Jesuit sophomore Katie Berrian has her own hopes for a magical end to the season — in her case in the form of her first high school victory coming in the state tournament. And she’ll take a one-stroke lead over Webster into the final round at Boulder Country Club.

And, of course, there are many others who have dreams of their own going into the final day of the season.

Berrian, who hadn’t shot better than 75 in high school competition this year, fired a 2-under-par 70 on Monday to hold the solo lead at the halfway point of the 5A state meet in Boulder. After a water ball resulted in a bogey on No. 17, she made a 7-foot downhill birdie putt on the treacherous 18th green to cap her round.

Berrian (left) finished with four birdies and two bogeys on the day.

“I was on top of my game,” said Berrian, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s 11-13 Junior Series champion in 2015. “It was fun. I would have been happy with (a season-best score) in a league tournament, but at state it makes me feel even better. I love the course and I knew I would play well. I had a good feeling about it.”

Webster, who estimates she’s played the Boulder Country Club course 150 times in her lifetime, birdied the final hole Monday after three-putting No. 17 for bogey. The 5A Central Regional champion carded four birdies and three bogeys on the day, but wasn’t thrilled with the outcome.

“I’m actually a little bummed,” said Webster, who will play golf at the University of Colorado starting in the fall. “My game feels really good and everything, but things were a little sloppy today. I just made some silly mistakes (including a couple of three-putts on the back nine). It felt like a 5 or 6 under round, but silly mistakes cost me some shots.

“Nothing really felt good today. I’m always happy shooting under par, but it sucks to know (there was a lower score) out there.

“Obviously I wanted to be in the lead going into tomorrow, but being one shot back I think it will give me an edge. I usually play better from behind. It’ll be good if I can clean some things up.”

Webster (left) birdied the first hole from 30 feet, but that wasn’t a sign of things to come with the putter.

“I think on this course my mind is very much in attack mode and that birdies are possible on every single hole here,” she said. “That’s why I’m so bummed because I have made birdies on every single hole of this course.”

Eaglecrest’s Emma Bryant, attempting to become just the second freshman since 2002 to win a Colorado girls state high school title, stands in third place at 73 despite a double-bogey 7 on the final hole. On the previous hole, the 2017 Colorado Junior Match Play champion had drained a 30-foot putt to save par after going in the water.

Defending 5A champion Amy Chitkoksoong of Grandview is among those in a tie for fourth place at 75.

In the team competition, Regis Jesuit (24-over-par 240) holds a one-stroke lead over Grandview and is three ahead of Cherry Creek.

Jordaan 1 Up on Schalk in 3A: Caroline Jordaan of Colorado Academy, who posted the lowest score of any Colorado player in regional state-qualifying tournaments, grabbed the lead in the 3A state meet by shooting a 3-under-par 68 at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo.

Jordaan’s bogey on the final hole was her only one of the day as she carded four birdies.

Jordaan, who placed third last year at state, will take a one-stroke lead over defending champion Hailey Schalk of Holy Family into the final round. Schalk, who last year became the first freshman since 2002 to win a Colorado girls state high school title, has won every high school tournament in which she’s played over the course of two seasons.

Schalk, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s Girls Player of the Year in 2017, played her last six holes in 4 under par en route to a 69 on Monday. That stretch included an eagle on the 451-yard, par-5 16th hole and a birdie on 18.

Charlotte Hillary of Kent Denver, the 3A runner-up last year, holds third place at 75.

Kent Denver, at 30-over-par 243, holds a six-stroke lead over Colorado Academy in the team standings.

2017 Champ Lehigh Shares Lead in 4A: Three players, including defending champion Lauren Lehigh of Loveland, share the lead after Monday’s opening round of the 4A tournament at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

Lehigh, a junior who has committed to play her college golf at the University of New Mexico, shot a 7-over-par 78 along with Jessica Zapf of Windsor and Maxine Choi of Cheyenne Mountain.

Those three are five strokes ahead of the next-best player.

In the team competition, Glenwood Springs leads at 47-over-par 260, while Loveland and Windsor are at 264.

Girls State High School Golf https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/18/girls-state-high-school-golf/ Wed, 18 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/18/girls-state-high-school-golf/ This year’s girls state high school golf tournaments will definitely have a different feel to them.

After all, it’s been a full decade since there’s been no former individual state champions in the field for either the 5A or 4A girls tourneys — until now. This year, for the first time since 2006, it’s a guarantee going into state that no one will repeat as an individual champion in either classification. Last year’s winners, Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy (4A) and Gillian Vance of Dakota Ridge (5A) are now both college players, Kupcho at Wake Forest and Vance at the University of Colorado. And all the earlier state champs have also graduated.

In other words, both of this year’s tournaments will be far more wide-open affairs than usual.

CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora will host the 5A tournament May 23-24, just after the women’s NCAA Division II finals conclude at the facility. And Pueblo Country Club will be the site for the 4A tournament on the same days.

At CommonGround, the favorites will include Mary Weinstein and Jaclyn Murray of Regis Jesuit, Morgan Sahm and Amy Chitkoksoong of Grandview, Delaney Elliott of Monarch, Jennifer Hankins of Legacy, Madison McCambridge of Fairview, Alexis Chan of Rock Canyon, and Joanna Kempton and Delaney Benson of Heritage. Weinstein (pictured), who placed seventh last year, was the 2015 CWGA Junior Player of the Year after winning the CWGA Junior Stroke Play and finishing second at the open-division CWGA Stroke Play. Sahm, a top-10 finisher each of her first three state tournaments, and Chan tied for third in last year’s weather-shortened 5A meet.

Team-wise, Regis will be seeking its third consecutive state title and its fifth in the last seven years.

In the 4A meet at Pueblo CC, among the top players are Erin Sargent of Silver Creek, Kiselya Plewe of Montezuma-Cortez (playing for Dolores), Caroline Jordaan and Kacey Godwin of Colorado Academy, Hannah More of Mullen and Lauren Murphy of Glenwood Springs. Sargent, the highest returning player after placing third last year, qualified for the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur and will play college golf at the University of Wyoming.

Cheyenne Mountain will be attempting to win its fourth straight 4A state team championship.

Here are the team and individual champions from the 5A and 4A regional state-qualifying tournaments:

5A Northern at Ptarmigan CC — Team: Monarch 243; Individual: Joanna Kempton, Heritage, 71.

5A Central at South Suburban GC — Team: Regis Jesuit 237; Individual: Sarah Hunt, Denver East, 72.

5A Western at Tiara Rado GC — Team: Rock Canyon 220; Individual: Brandy McClain, Rock Canyon, 71.

5A Southern at Colorado Springs CC — Team: Ralston Valley 239; Individual: Jordan Remley, Ralston Valley, 73.

4A Western at Yampa Valley GC — Team: Rifle 358; Individual: Elly Walters, Rifle, 73.

4A Metro-West at Fox Hollow GC — Team: Colorado Academy 229; Individual: Caroline Jordaan, Colorado Academy, 72.

4A Northern at Saddleback GC — Team: (tie) Windsor and Northridge 279; Individual: Erin Sargent, Silver Creek, 74.

4A Colorado Springs at CC of Colorado — Team: Cheyenne Mountain 243; Individual: (tie) Regina Dillon, Cheyenne Mountain, and Kelsey McKenna, Air Academy, 78.

4A Southern at Steamboat Springs GC — Team: (tie) Pueblo County and Pueblo South 277; Individual: Sophia Montoya, Pueblo South, 78.

Heating Up in the Cold https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/05/18/heating-up-in-the-cold/ Mon, 18 May 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/05/18/heating-up-in-the-cold/ Very Different Outcomes https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/05/20/very-different-outcomes/ Tue, 20 May 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/05/20/very-different-outcomes/

It’s hard to imagine the two girls state high school tournaments turning out much differently.

In the 4A meet at the Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs, Jefferson Academy junior Jennifer Kupcho posted one of the biggest — if not the biggest — victory margins in the history of the girls state tournaments: 14 strokes.

“I felt someone would be up there with me, but that didn’t happen,” said Kupcho, the 2013 CWGA Junior Player of the Year who has already committed to Wake Forest.

In the 5A meet at Raccoon Creek Golf Course in Littleton, Rock Canyon senior Michelle Romano (pictured above getting hugged) prevailed in a playoff at an event in which four other players finished within a shot of the winning total, including runner-up Hannah Wood of Arapahoe.

While Kupcho (pictured at left), who competed in four USGA championships last year, was certainly the pre-tournament favorite in 4A, Romano received far less attention competing against the likes of Wood, defending champion Calli Ringsby of Cherry Creek and Sydney Merchant of Dakota Ridge.

“I would definitely call myself an underdog,” Romano said after the biggest win of her career. “… I already know where I’m going to school (and playing golf, the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs). I didn’t have much relying on this except it really is just a self-accomplishment. I started playing golf my freshman year of high school. I never would have thought I would have been here today. It hasn’t exactly sunk in. Winning this tournament means I put in as much effort as I could and it paid off.”

Romano, sister of 2012 CGA Junior Match Play champion Andrew Romano, won the 5A Northern Regional tournament leading up to state, and also captured two or three other titles during the high school season.

But she had to overcome a bogey-bogey-bogey finish to post the victory. Wood, the University of Oklahoma-bound senior, birdied the final hole of regulation from 4 feet to tie Romano. And when Jaylee Tait of Columbine, playing at her home course, also struggled down the stretch, going 5 over par in the last four holes, Romano and Wood were headed to a playoff.

Tait (pictured at left in pink) could have won the tournament outright with a par on No. 18, or joined the playoff with a bogey. But she closed with a double bogey — hitting into a greenside bunker and three-putting — to share third place with Merchant and Anna Kennedy of Legend.

“I’m just disappointed because it feels like someone didn’t beat me; I beat myself, I guess,” said Tait, whose sister Ashley won three 4A state titles.

In the playoff, both golfers hit the green in regulation on the par-4 first hole. But Wood left her 25-foot birdie putt 4 feet short. And after Romano’s 15-foot birdie attempt finished 2 feet from the cup, Wood lipped out her par try (pictured at left). Then Romano converted her par putt for the victory.

“It’s disappointing,” said Wood, winner of the last two CJGA Tournament of Champions. “I had been three-putting all day. I considered the greens to be faster than they were and I knew the hail (from during a weather delay) had some effects on the greens.

“It’s pretty disappointing because I really wanted to do this for Arapahoe considering what we went through as a school” with the December shooting and killing of Claire Davis by a fellow student.

Wood finished her high school career with four top-10 finishes at state, going 10th, third, third and second.

Romano closed with a 3-over-par 75 on Tuesday to post a 9-over 153 total. But after making a 15-foot birdie on No. 15 and being tied for the lead with Tait, she missed a 6-foot par putt on 16. Then after putting her tee shot 30 feet from the pin on No. 17, play was delayed for more than an hour by lightning and large marble-sized hail (pictured below).

When play resumed, Romano three-putted for bogey and then popped up a drive about 100 yards on No. 18 en route to another bogey.

“I didn’t know I was tied for first (at the time of the weather delay) — and I didn’t want to know either,” Romano said. “I think the weather delay definitely affected my mojo and how I was handling myself. Then I three-putted that hole, and all the nerves set in. Then I skied a drive (on 18) and thought I was completely done.”

But Romano gathered herself to prevail in the playoff with that 2-foot par.

“That last putt, I was shaking,” she admitted. “I’ve never been so nervous in my life to make a 2-footer. It was definitely a very good feeling to get that one in.”

Wood, who was paired with Romano on Tuesday, matched her final-round 75. Those two finished one stroke better than Kennedy (final-round 74), Tait (79) and Merchant (77).

In the 5A team competition, Regis Jesuit won by three over Rock Canyon, ending Cherry Creek’s run of three straight titles. Regis swept the boys and girls 5A state championships during the 2013-14 school year. Creek, led by Ringsby’s seventh-place individual showing, finished fifth on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, at the 4A tournament in Colorado Springs, there was very little drama in the individual competition after Kupcho opened up a nine-stroke lead after round 1.

Tuesday turned out to be little more than an extended coronation for Kupcho, who like Wood is a member of the Hale Irwin Elite Player Program at CommonGround Golf Course.

Kupcho backed up her even-par 72 on Monday with a 74 on Tuesday at the Country Club of Colorado for her 14-stroke victory over Andrea Ballou of Valor Christian. Kupcho earned the top spot after finishing third at state as a freshman and second last year.

“It’s really amazing,” she said. “I’m pretty excited. I’m excited I represented my school like that. I get to go back and all my friends will be excited and proud and everything.”

On Tuesday, with little challenge being mounted from opponents, the 17-year-old Kupcho carded a birdie and three bogeys in her round of 74. The bottom line was, she wasn’t to be denied again at the state tournament.

“I wanted to do it,” she said. “Obviously, I’ve lost the last couple of years so I’ve always really wanted to win — and I finally did it.”

Cheyenne Mountain, playing in its hometown, easily defended its 4A team title, rallying on Tuesday to beat runner-up Montrose by 15 shots for the tournament.

Relative Newcomer to Golf Leads 4A State Meet https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/05/20/relative-newcomer-to-golf-leads-4a-state-meet/ Mon, 20 May 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/05/20/relative-newcomer-to-golf-leads-4a-state-meet/ Considering Tori Glenn first picked up a golf club a little more than two years ago, some might consider it quite an accomplishment that she even qualified for the 4A girls state high school tournament.

Apparently, Glenn herself is nowhere near satisfied with that.

The Valor Christian senior and University of Colorado women’s golf recruit not only advanced to state and is on the leaderboard, but she’s the outright leader after Monday’s first round of the meet at Broken Tee Golf Course.

Glenn shot a 2-over-par 74 in the rain and wind on Monday and grabbed a one-stroke advantage heading into Tuesday’s final round. She hit 17 greens in regulation and closed with a 1-under-par 35 on the back nine.

A former high-level gymnast, Glenn is one shot ahead of Taylor Dorans of Broomfield (pictured) and Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy heading into the final 18.

Glenn started playing golf as a sophomore, but just a year later she placed ninth at state. And now this year’s tournament is the future CU golfer’s to lose.

“You just keep on cutting strokes back and improving,” she said of her rapid progress in golf. “That’s all you can ask for in this game.”

It wasn’t long ago that Glenn had her sights set on a gymnastics scholarship at the University of Denver. But that was before she broke her right leg during her sophomore year at Valor Christian.

Just a few months after suffering the injury, she competed in golf at the junior varisty level — while wearing a cast on her leg.

“I was on one leg, hobbling around and hitting away,” she said. “When you love something it doesn’t matter what obstacle is in front of you. You’ll go for success no matter what.”

Glenn said she won “about” five high school tournaments this season and averaged 75. But after her 74 Monday, she thinks she’s capable of going even lower in Tuesday’s final round.

“I’m hoping I can go under tomorrow,” Glenn said. “I had three three-putts today; my distance control was off a lot. Tomorrow will be better. I’m excited.”

Likewise for the other contenders.

Dorans, a University of Wyoming golf signee, has finished fourth once and sixth twice in her previous trips to state. Kupcho, who placed third last year at state, had the lowest state-qualifying round this season — in either Class 4A or 5A — in firing a 67 at Fox Hollow in the 4A Metro-West Regional.

Dorans missed two putts inside of 4 feet in her first 10 holes, but finished strong, going 1 under in her last seven despite closing with a bogey.

“I feel really good,” she said. “I’m coming out here just playing for myself — having fun, enjoying it, because it’s my last high school tournament. I’m kind of just embracing it and doing what I can. I can’t control what the other girls are going to do, but as long as I play for myself, I’ll be happy.”

Meanwhile, Kupcho thinks if she gets her putting homed in, she’ll be in good shape on the final day.

“I hit everything good (on Monday), but I just couldn’t putt,” she said. “The first four holes I had 5-footers on every one and only made one.”

Cheyenne Mountain leads the 4A team competition by five strokes after Valor Christian’s Laura Cohan forgot a penalty stroke and signed for an incorrect score. Therefore, the team couldn’t use her total of 86 among its three best individual scores. Instead, it counted a 95. That dropped Valor from first to second place as it has a 253 total, compared to Cheyenne Mountain’s 248.

Cohan will be able to compete in Tuesday’s final round and her score can be used for VC’s second-day team total.

Cherry Creek’s Ringsby Leads 5A By Two in Grand Junction: Cherry Creek junior Calli Ringsby took a two-stroke lead at the halfway point of the 5A girls state tournament at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.

Ringsby, who swept the CWGA Junior Stroke Play and Junior Match Play championships last year, fired a 1-over-par 73 on Monday. The junior, who made three birdies and four bogeys in the opening round, is seeking her first state high school title after placing second in 2011 and fourth last year.

Three players share second place at 75 heading into Tuesday’s final round. University of Colorado signee Claudia Davis of Arapahoe is tied for that spot with Jenni Chun of Highlands Ranch and Michelle Romero of Rock Canyon.

Defending champion Mackenzie Cohen of Cherry Creek opened with an 82 and shares 20th place.

Two-time defending 5A state champion Cherry Creek shot a 236 and leads the team competition by three over Arapahoe.

Ringsby, Wood Eye Elusive 5A Girls State Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/05/16/ringsby-wood-eye-elusive-5a-girls-state-title/ Thu, 16 May 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/05/16/ringsby-wood-eye-elusive-5a-girls-state-title/ Cherry Creek owns more state high school girls golf titles than any other program in Colorado, having won nine since girls golf was first officially sanctioned in the state in 1990.

The Bruins have also captured seven individual state championships over that period, including the first (by Jill McGill, who went on to win two USGA championships) and the last (Mackenzie Cohen).

Arapahoe, meanwhile, has claimed one state team title in girls golf (2010) and has never won the individual crown.

Considering how the Bruins and Warriors have dominated girls golf in the state recently, one or both schools figure to add to their trophy cases this year.

Cherry Creek and Arapahoe have monopolized the top two spots in the girls 5A state golf championships each of the last three years, with Creek winning the last two titles. And no one would be surprised if this year produced more of the same when the 5A meet is held Monday and Tuesday (May 20-21) at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction.

Meanwhile, the 4A state tournament will be played those same days at Broken Tee Golf Course in Englewood.

Appropriately, the teams were separated by just one stroke at their state qualifying tournament, the Metro-East Regional at South Suburban Golf Course last week. And arguably the two favorites to win the 5A individual title, juniors Calli Ringsby of Cherry Creek and Hannah Wood of Arapahoe, placed 1-2 at that regional, with scores of 72 and 73, respectively. (Ringsby is pictured swinging above, while Wood is at left.)

Both golfers are in the Hale Irwin Elite Player Program at CommonGround Golf Course, which is owned and operated by the CGA and CWGA.

Ringsby won both the CWGA Junior Stroke and Junior Match Play Championships last year, and she was one of four girls who represented the U.S. in the USA-China Youth Golf Match last August. She’s finished second and fourth in her previous two 5A state tournaments.

Wood made an impression on the national stage in March when she won the prestigious Kathy Whitworth Invitational in Texas. In Colorado, she captured the CJGA Tournament of Champions last fall. At the 5A state meet, she’s placed 10th as a freshman and third last year.

Also a good bet to be in contention this year is University of Colorado signee Claudia Davis of Arapahoe, who’s had three top-11 finishes at state. Meanwhile, Cherry Creek’s Cohen, who pulled off a big surprise in winning the 5A individual championship last year, will defend her title.

At the 4A state meet at Broken Tee, Jennifer Kupcho of Jefferson Academy and Taylor Dorans of Broomfield figure to be the favorites for the individual title.

Kupcho, the 2012 CWGA Junior Player of the Year, won the CJGA 14-18 Junior Series Championship as a 15-year-old last year. She shot the lowest score at any regional — 4A or 5A — when she carded a 5-under-par 67 at Fox Hollow in the 4A Metro-West.

Dorans, who has signed to play college golf at the University of Wyoming, won the 4A Northern Regional title for the third time. She’s finished in the top six in each of her previous three trips to state.

Regis Jesuit, the 4A team champion a year ago, is now competing on the 5A level.

Here is a rundown of all the 2013 regional champions, and of the known college golf signees in the 5A and 4A fields.
