Kyler Dunkle, a junior at the University of Utah, and Chris Korte, a senior at the University of Denver, placed fourth and fifth, respectively, out of an 84-man field in Bandon.

Dunkle, a former state high school champion who captured his first college title earlier this season at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in Erie, posted rounds of 65-69-70 for a 9-under-par 204 total in Oregon. That left him four strokes behind champion Chun An Yu of Arizona State. Dunkle (pictured) made five birdies and two double bogeys on Tuesday.

It marked the third top-10 finish of the season for Dunkle, the 2016 CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year.

Korte had a stellar final two rounds in Bandon, going 66-66 after opening with a 74 to card a 7-under 206 total. Korte went bogey free on Tuesday and made 13 birdies over the final 36 holes.

Tuesday marked Korte’s first top-10 of the season, though he’s finished 11th twice. Korte’s DU squad placed 12th out of 14 school in the team standings. (March 15 Update: For his performance at Bandon, Korte was named the Summit League’s Men’s Golfer of the Week.)

On the women’s side, also placing in the top five on Tuesday was Coloradan Erin Sargent, a sophomore at the University of Wyoming, who finished a college career-best fourth in the BYU Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah. After recording scores of 69-74-72, Sargent’s 1-under-par 215 total left her seven strokes behind winner Pimnipa Panthong of Kent State.

Likewise recording a top-10 individual finish on Tuesday was Jack Ainscough of Colorado State, who placed a career-best ninth — one spot better than 2017 NCAA individual champion Braden Thornberry of Mississippi — while competing only as an individual at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic. Ainscough, a freshman from England, was competing in just his third college tournament. He went 73-71-67 for a 5-under-par 211 total and ended up 10 strokes behind tournament winner Fredrik Nilehn of Texas Tech.

The University of Colorado finished eighth out of 16 teams in San Diego, while CSU was 12th.

Springing Forward https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/02/13/springing-forward-3/ Tue, 13 Feb 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/02/13/springing-forward-3/ Two sophomores from Colorado-based schools started the spring portion of the college season in strong fashion by posting top-three individual finishes on Tuesday.

Ellen Secor from Colorado State University recorded a college-career-best runner-up showing at The Gold Rush in Long Beach, Calif. And Robyn Choi from the University of Colorado notched her fifth top-10 showing of the season by tying for third in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.

Secor (pictured), who led by three strokes going into the final round in Long Beach, posted the fourth top-10 individual showing of her college career. She carded rounds of 71-70-74 for a 1-under-par 215 total, ending up three behind Sophie Hausmann of Idaho, who won the tournament for the second straight year, this time closing with a 68.

Secor was trying to give CSU individual victories in its last two tournaments as teammate Katrina Prendergast won the UC Irvine Invitational in the Rams’ fall finale.

With Secor’s runner-up performance, CSU finished third out of the 14-team field in Long Beach.

(Updated on Feb. 15: Secor was subsequently named the Mountain West Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week.)

As for Choi, the 28th-ranked women’s college player in the country, she went 75-72-73 for a 7-over-par 220 total in Puerto Rico. She ended up four strokes behind winner Maria Fassi of Arkansas, the fifth-ranked women’s college player in the nation.

So far this season, Choi has recorded individual college finishes that include a second, two thirds, a fifth and a seventh. The Australian played in the U.S. Women’s Open last year.

Choi helped CU place fifth in the 11-team field.

Meanwhile, another U.S. Women’s Open competitor from last year, Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster and Wake Forest, opened the spring season by finishing 11th individually in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Kupcho recorded rounds of 72-74-73 for a 6-over-par 219 total.

In addition, two Coloradans notched top-10 finishes Tuesday in the Battle at Boulder Creek in Boulder City, Nev.

Kiselya Plewe of Cortez, who plays for Weber State in Utah, finished second as rounds of 72-74-79 left her at 9-over-par 225 and five strokes behind champion Pinyada Kuvanun of Toledo.

And Morgan Sahm of Centennial, a sophomore at Northern Colorado, tied for ninth individually. She recorded scores of 81-72-79 for a 232 total. UNC placed fourth out of nine teams.

Agonizingly Close https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/04/23/agonizingly-close/ Sun, 23 Apr 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/04/23/agonizingly-close/ The Men’s Mountain West Conference Championship turned out to be a good old-fashioned shootout, but Colorado State wasn’t the last team standing, though it came very close.

Seeking their first league title since 2010 — and the automatic NCAA Regional berth that would have gone with it — the Rams fell just short of the mark Sunday in Tucson, Ariz.

After going into the final round with a two-stroke lead — and still being ahead with nine holes left — CSU was edged on the final hole and had to settle for a runner-up finish, one stroke behind UNLV, which successfully defended its title. Five teams in the 11-school field finished the 54-hole event at least 14 under par, with UNLV posting an 18-under-par total and Colorado State checking in at 17 under.

CSU and UNLV were tied for the team lead with just the final group of the day left on the course. Unfortunately for the Rams, senior Blake Cannon bogeyed the 470-yard, par-4 18th, leaving CSU one back of UNLV.

Cannon and teammate Colton Yates led the way for the Rams, tying for eighth place at 5-under 211. Colorado resident Jake Staiano was 11th at 212. (April 27 Update: Staiano was subsequently named to the All-Mountain West Conference team.)

Meanwhile, Sunwoo Choi of the Air Force Academy placed sixth individually at 210 as the Falcons were seventh in the team standings.

At the Women’s Summit League Championship in Nebraska City, where the University of Denver is seeking its 14th straight conference title, DU grabbed a one-stroke lead over South Dakota State following the first round.

The Pioneers opened with an 8-over-par 296. Senior Jessica Carty, the defending champion, posted an even-par 72 which left her in second place, three strokes behind Megan Mingo of South Dakota State.

At the Women’s Big Sky Championship in Boulder City, Nev., Northern Colorado wrapped up its season with a fifth-place finish out of the 12-team field. UNC posted a 58-over-par 922 total. Sacramento State won at 900. Baile Winslow led the way for UNC individually, tying for 11th place.

Stretch Run https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/04/11/stretch-run/ Tue, 11 Apr 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/04/11/stretch-run/ Jake Staiano of Cherry Hills Village is winding up his sophomore season at Colorado State, and he seems to be saving his best for last.

On Tuesday, Staiano notched a top-11 individual finish for the third time in his last four tournaments by placing fifth out of 111 players at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Ariz.

Staiano (pictured) was one of four players with major Colorado connections to record top-10 finishes on Tuesday. Brenden Bone of the Air Force Academy tied for sixth at the Cowboy Classic, while University of Colorado teammates Brittany Fan and Kirsty Hodgkins shared fourth place in the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif.

Staiano, the 2013 CGA Junior Match Play champion who advanced to match play at the 2015 U.S. Amateur, broke par all three rounds of the Cowboy Classic, closing with a bogey-free 3-under-par 69 for a 7-under 209 total. He ended up three strokes behind champion Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara.

Staiano has now posted five top-11 individual finishes this college season.

As a team, CSU placed sixth in the 18-team field in the Rams’ final tournament before the Mountain West Conference Championships April 21-23 in Tucson, Ariz.

Meanwhile, Air Force’s Bone, a senior from Phoenix, came in a stroke behind Staiano after carding a final-round 71.

At the Silverado Showdown, Hodgkins, a CU freshman from Australia, and Fan, a junior who was runner-up in the 2015 CWGA Match Play, finished three strokes behind co-champions Lilia Vu of UCLA and Hannah Kim of Northwestern. The Buffs carded 5-under-par 211 totals, with Fan closing with a 68 and Hodgkins a 70.

Tuesday tied Hodgkin’s best college showing and was her fourth top-10 of the season. Fan, the 2013 low amateur at the Colorado Women’s Open, notched her best finish as a CU junior.

Team-wise, the Buffs ended up third out of 18 schools, behind only nationally third-ranked Stanford and No. 6 UCLA.

In Contention Again https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/04/02/in-contention-again/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/04/02/in-contention-again/ Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster collected her fifth top-four finish of her sophomore season at Wake Forest on Sunday by tying for third at the Bryan National Collegiate in Browns Summit, N.C.

Kupcho (pictured), winner of the last three CWGA Player of the Year awards, led for a time during the final round, but had to settle for ending up two shots behind champion Kristen Gillman of Alabama. Kupcho closed with a 1-under-par 71, giving her a 6-under 210 total. She made five birdies on Sunday, but paid the price for a double-bogey 7 on her 10th hole of the day.

Ranked in the top 10 nationally in women’s college golf, Kupcho will go into the stretch run of the season on a strong note. In her last two tournaments, she’s placed second and third. Overall for the season, she’s notched two wins, a second-place showing, a third, a fourth and an eighth. Her only hiccups came after suffering a concussion in one event, having to withdraw there, and placing 47th in her next tourney.

Next up for Kupcho is the ACC Championships in mid-April. She was runner-up in that event last year and went on to tie for sixth in the NCAA Finals.

Colorado State, the only local team competing in the Bryan National Collegiate, ended up 16th in the 18-team field, with sophomore Katrina Prendergast leading the way with an 14th place individual showing. In finishing at 217, she recorded her fourth consecutive top-16 performance.

Coming out of the week, Cannon has two victories. Easy as that.

Four days after winning CSU’s own Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club, Cannon prevailed at the prestigious William H. Tucker in Albuquerque, N.M.

Cannon (pictured), a transfer from Arizona State, shot rounds of 71-69-70 for a 6-under-par 210 total. That was good for a two-stroke victory over San Diego State’s PJ Samiere. The University of Colorado’s Morten Toft Hansen placed sixth at 215, while CSU’s Jake Staiano was 10th at 217.

Team-wise, CSU finished second in the 16-school field, 10 strokes behind champion San Diego State. CU was fifth and Denver ninth.

A Breakthrough? https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/19/a-breakthrough/ Mon, 19 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/19/a-breakthrough/ The Air Force Academy men’s golf squad, which last won a team title 2 1/2 years ago, put itself in position to end that victory drought as it shares the lead after two rounds of the Ram Masters Invitational at Fort Collins Country Club.

The Falcons posted rounds of 281 and 282 on Monday to finish 36 holes at 3-over-par 563. That leaves them atop the 18-team field along with Wichita State.

Sunwoo Choi was a big reason for AFA’s strong play on Monday as the senior backed up a first-round 65 with a 70 to lead the individual competition by two over five players who share second place. Among those five are teammate Brenden Bone (69-68) and Colorado State’s Colton Yates (68-69).

Host CSU, the two-time defending team champion, holds fourth place at 567, four strokes behind the co-leaders. Northern Colorado (578) is eighth, and Denver (595) 15th.

College Golf Tourneys Galore https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/05/college-golf-tourneys-galore/ Mon, 05 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/05/college-golf-tourneys-galore/ Colorado-based fans of college golf should get their fill this season.

To give you some indication of how many NCAA Division I tournaments will be held in the Centennial State, the University of Northern Colorado men’s entire fall schedule will be conducted without having to cross a state border.

The Colorado-based fall college slate was already pretty packed, but an additional tournament will make its debut this year. The men’s Paintbrush Invitational, hosted by the University of Denver, is set for Oct. 10-11 at Colorado Golf Club in Parker, site of a Solheim Cup and a Senior PGA Championship.

And not only will all five D-I men’s programs in Colorado — DU, the University of Colorado, Colorado State, UNC and Air Force — compete in the event, but so will 2016 national champion Oregon and perennial national power Oklahoma State. Coincidentally, Coloradan Wyndham Clark, who recently advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Amateur, will play his final college season at Oregon after spending his previous college years at Oklahoma State.

The other out-of-the-ordinary tournament coming to Colorado this season will be the men’s Pac-12 Conference Championship, which will be hosted by CU and Boulder Country Club April 28-30. The Pac-12 is one of the top conferences in men’s golf, having accounted for four national team champions since 2004.

It will be the first time CU has hosted a men’s golf conference championship since 1972, when the Big Eight came to Boulder CC.

“The opportunity to host the Pac-12 Championship at home is unique and exciting,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said earlier this year. “It will be fun, not only for our team, but to showcase the entire Pac-12 in our own backyard.”

Locally speaking, the college season will begin Tuesday (Sept. 6) with the Ballyneal Challenge, a three-team event which CU will host at Ballyneal in Holyoke. UNC and Wyoming will fill out the field.

The Ballyneal Challenge starts a five-week stretch in which an amazing eight D-I tournaments will be played in Colorado. That includes five men’s events and three women’s.

Here’s the rundown of all the D-I events scheduled for the state this season, with the Colorado teams that are competing in each:

— Men’s Ballyneal Challenge Sept. 6 at Ballyneal in Holyoke (Colorado teams competing: CU, UNC)

— Men’s Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational Sept. 10-11 at Eisenhower GC at the Air Force Academy (Colorado teams competing: AFA, CU, CSU, UNC)

— Men’s Ram Masters Invitational Sept. 19-20 at Fort Collins CC (Colorado teams coming: CSU, DU, UNC, AFA)

— Men’s Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational Sept. 26-27 at Colorado National GC in Erie (Colorado teams competing: CU, UNC, AFA)

Fab Freshman https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/05/fab-freshman/ Thu, 05 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/05/fab-freshman/ Colorado State golfer Katrina Prendergast is a freshman, but she certainly didn’t look the part Thursday in her first round of women’s NCAA regional tournament play.

Competing against a field that includes Pac-12 champion Southern California and defending NCAA champ Stanford, all Prendergast did was grab the individual lead after round 1 of the 54-hole event in Stanford, Calif.

Prendergast (pictured), who comes from Sparks, Nev., recorded a 3-under-par 68 despite starting and finishing with a bogey. She posted seven birdies and four bogeys overall at the Stanford Golf Course. That left her with a one-stroke lead over Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford and Jakeishya Le of Cal-Riverside.

Prendergast has been on a roll of late. Her runner-up showing at the recent Mountain West Conference Championships gave her six consecutive top-15 finishes.

Meanwhile, in the team competition at Standford, the University of Colorado is in good shape after Thursday’s round, sharing sixth place with a Wake Forest team that includes Coloradan Jennifer Kupcho. Both squads posted 11-over-par 295s, leaving them eight behind leader USC.

The top six team finishers and three individuals not on those teams from each regional will land spots in the NCAA championship finals, set for May 20-25 in Eugene, Ore.

Individually, Kupcho and CU’s Brittany Fan fired even-par 71s, good for seventh place, three shots behind Prendergast.

Meanwhile, the University of Denver, competing in the Baton Rouge, La., Regional, struggled on Thursday and sits in 16th place in the 18-team field.
