That might be the collective feeling of every player who feels they might have a legitimate chance to win the CGA Women’s Stroke Play Championship … if Jennifer Kupcho isn’t in the field.

After all, the standout from Westminster won the 2015 CWGA Stroke Play (the former name for the CGA Women’s Stroke Play) by a whopping 21 shots, the 2016 championship by 19 shots, and last year’s tournament by “just” 13.

Do the math, and the average margin of victory for Kupcho in this event over the past three years was 17.7 strokes.

But Kupcho won’t be going for her fourth straight CGA Women’s Stroke Play title this week. Coming off winning the women’s NCAA Division I individual title and competing for the U.S. in its rout of Great Britain & Ireland in the Curtis Cup, Kupcho isn’t entered this year. Besides needing a break, she has jury duty this week.

So the list of players with a good chance to win goes from one to quite a few.

Black Bear Golf Club (pictured) in Parker will host the 71st annual CGA Women’s Stroke Play, with the 54-hole event running from Wednesday through Friday (June 20-22).

The championship flight for the event will feature the players with the top 12 scores after two rounds. Additional flights will include a dozen or more competitors each.

Among the college golfers entered who figure to be in the mix for the title are Texan Kennedy Swann (Clemson University), who finished 10th at the ACC Championship in April; Mary Weinstein (University of Denver), who placed second in this event in 2015 and fourth last year; 2016 runner-up Gillian Vance (University of Colorado); teammates Erin Sargent and Megan Knadler (Wyoming), who tied for second last year; Delaney Elliott (Montana State), who’s recorded two top-five finishes in the Stroke Play in the last three years; and Anna Kennedy (Brigham Young University), who’s posted top-10s each of the last two years.

Also among the 57 entrants is Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore, a five-time winner of this event in the 1990s. Moore recently qualified for the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open. Also in the field is Susan Hartwell, who advanced to the round of 32 at last year’s U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.

Bobcats Rule https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/06/06/bobcats-rule/ Wed, 06 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/06/06/bobcats-rule/

The 103 teams that competed in this week’s CGA Mashie Championship included many friends and some blood relatives that paired up.

The championship flight title match on Wednesday featured that and more.

Besides the aforementioned, the finalists included two sets of college teammates, as well as roommates, sisters and even twins.

At the end of the day at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, Colorado resident Delaney Elliott and Montana State teammate and roommate Kelly Hooper defeated Wyoming teammates, sisters and twins Kaylee and Megan Knadler, 2 and 1 to earn the title after three days of competition. (The champions are pictured, with Hooper at left.)

“It’s awesome. We had such a fun time out there,” said Hooper, who lives in Spokane, Wash., and was playing in the Mashie for the first time. “I just came down for a visit. We thought this would be a fun tournament to play in together. I came down last year and played in the (CWGA Stroke Play), but this is more like a team event.”

Elliott and Hooper birdied three of the first five holes — with the putts ranging from 15 to 30 feet — to take an early 3-up lead in the finals of the four-ball match play event.

“We had to make quite a few birdies at the beginning and they were making some birdies too,” said Elliott (left), a Monarch High School graduate who lives in Superior. “Every time we made one, we both had an opportunity. It was just whoever made the putt first.”

The MSU teammates, the top seeds this week, eventually led by as much as 4 up after Hooper two-putted for birdie on the par-5 11th hole.

“It was nice to get off to a good start,” Hooper said. “It was nice to be comfortable and have the lead.”

But the Knadlers, who are Phoenix residents, rallied, with Kaylee making a 7-foot birdie on 12 and Megan a 2-foot birdie on the tough 14th hole to cut the deficit to 2 down. But the teams halved the next three holes, with the long-hitting Hooper clinching the victory by making a 4-foot par putt on No. 17.

The Knadlers (below), who are living in Laramie over the summer, came to play in the Mashie in part because they love the weather in the area and they have friends and family living in Colorado.

“We also came out here to win,” Kaylee Knadler said. “And we took a salty second.

“We just didn’t make the putts where they needed to be made. We weren’t very clutch on the putts.”

Elliott and Hooper were a better-ball 4 under par for 17 holes on Wednesday, finishing with five birdies and a bogey. The Knadlers were 3 under.

Elliott and Hooper not only didn’t trail in Wednesday’s final, but that was true in all three of their matches at the Mashie, which was played at both Coal Creek Golf Course in Louisville and Legacy Ridge.

The title was the first in a CGA/CWGA women’s championship for both Elliott and Hooper. Both competed in the CWGA Stroke Play last year, tying for fifth place. Megan Knadler shared second in that event.

Among those on hand to watch some of Wednesday’s action at Legacy Ridge were CGA co-president Joe McCleary and executive director Ed Mate.

Here are the winners of the Wednesday finals in all 13 flights — for both championship and consolation brackets in each case:

Finals Set https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/06/05/finals-set/ Tue, 05 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/06/05/finals-set/ On a day recognized as Women’s Golf Day, college teammates Delaney Elliott and Kelly Hooper of Montana State, and Megan and Kaylee Knadler of Wyoming, celebrated by making the finals of the most popular CGA women’s championship on the schedule.

Both of Tuesday’s semifinal matches in the CGA Women’s Mashie at Coal Creek Golf Course in Louisville were very close.

The Knadlers, the second seeds from Phoenix, outlasted Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Janet Moore and Christie Austin, who have won the Mashie six times together, in 23 holes.

And Elliott and Hooper — the top seeds from Superior and Spokane, Wash., respectively — edged Tiffany Maurycy of Cherry Creek Country Club and Holly Schaefer of Columbine Country Club, 1 up.

The two teams made up of college players will square off on Wednesday in the championship flight finals of the four-ball match play tournament. The two-course event will conclude at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

The Women’s Mashie featured a starting field of 103 two-person teams and 13 different divisions of competition.

Back for More https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/06/04/back-for-more-15/ Mon, 04 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/06/04/back-for-more-15/ The top two seeded teams, plus Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Janet Moore and Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club, won championship flight quarterfinal matches Monday in the CGA Women’s Mashie Championship at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

Moore and Austin, who have teamed up to win the Mashie title six times (Moore has captured two additional championships with different partners), scored a 3 and 2 victory over Delaney Benson of CommonGround Golf Course and Hannah More of Pinehurst Country Club in the four-ball match play event. (Moore and Austin are pictured, with Moore at left.)

Also advancing to the championship flight semifinals — which will be contested on Tuesday at Coal Creek Golf Course in Louisville — will be top-seeded Delaney Elliott and Kelly Hooper, two Montana State University teammates; Tiffany Maurycy and Holly Schaefer; and second-seeded Megan and Kaylee Knadler. Moore and Austin will face the Knadlers in the semis, while Elliott and Hooper will take on Maurycy and Schaefer.

Elliott and Hooper defeated Kathy Malpass and Katherine Moore-Lilly 6 and 5. Maurycy and Schaefer beat Deb Hughes and Kelly Rahn 3 and 2. And the Knadlers prevailed over Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Lynn Zmistowski and daughter Kim Sorkness, 4 and 3.

The winners of Tuesday’s semifinals will square off for the title Wednesday back at Legacy Ridge.

In all, 206 players in 13 flights are competing in the Mashie, alternating courses Monday and Tuesday and wrapping up on Wednesday at Legacy Ridge should they advance.

One More Time? https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/20/one-more-time/ Tue, 20 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/20/one-more-time/ Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster put herself in good position to three-peat in the CWGA Stroke Play Championship, but after Tuesday’s second round, a few players are within striking distance should the unexpected happen on Wednesday.

The three-time CWGA Player of the Year shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday, leaving her with a five-shot lead heading into the final round at Lone Tree Golf Club. The Wake Forest golfer, who finished second last month in the Women’s NCAA Division I Championships, stands at 1-under-par 143 overall.

Kupcho (pictured), who’s set to compete in the U.S. Women’s Open next month, made two birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday. She’s won the last two Stroke Plays by 21 and 19 shots, respectively, and is hoping to become the first player in 20 years to capture the tournament title three straight times.

Two other college golfers “” Erin Sargent of the University of Wyoming (and Longmont) and Delaney Elliott of Montana State (and Superior) are Kupcho’s closest pursuers with 18 holes remaining. They’re tied for second place with 148 totals as both have gone 74-74.

Sargent posted four birdies on Tuesday, but a double bogey on her final hole was a setback. Elliott went 2 under par for her last four holes.

Arizonan Megan Knadler, a Wyoming teammate of Sargent’s, holds fourth place at 149 after a second-round 77 that included a triple bogey on the 14th hole.

The leaders will tee off for Wednesday’s final round at 10:30 a.m.

Solid Start https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/19/solid-start-3/ Mon, 19 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/19/solid-start-3/ Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster, who’s seeking her third consecutive title in the CWGA Stroke Play Championship, shot a 1-under-par 71 to go ahead by two after Monday’s opening round of the 54-hole tournament at Lone Tree Golf Club.

Kupcho (pictured), a U.S. Women’s Open qualifier and the No. 11 player in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings, made four birdies and three bogeys in round 1 of the 70th annual tourney.

The women’s NCAA Finals runner-up is attempting to become the first player to win four consecutive CWGA majors (Stroke Play and Match Play) since Wendy Werley in 1988-89. And the Wake Forest golfer is aiming to be the first player to three-peat in the CWGA Stroke Play since Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore won four in a row culminating in 1997.

Kupcho’s margin of victory in this event has been 21 and 19 shots, respectively, in the last two years.

Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch, runner-up to Kupcho in this event in 2015, is her closest pursuer after the first round as she posted a 1-over-par 73. Weinstein, a Regis University golfer and the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s 2016 girls Player of the Year, carded three birdies and four bogeys on Monday while paired with Kupcho.

Sharing third place after 74s in round 1 were Erin Sargent of Longmont and Delaney Elliott of Superior. Sargent plays golf for the University of Wyoming and Elliott for Montana State. Each made two birdies on Monday.

Former 5A state high school champion “” and 2016 Stroke Play runner-up “” Gillian Vance, the University of Colorado golfer who competed with Kupcho in the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball, shares fifth place at 75 with Danielle Price.

Play will continue through Wednesday, with players being flighted after the completion of 36 holes.

On a Roll https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/15/on-a-roll-2/ Fri, 15 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/15/on-a-roll-2/

After nearly a decade of playing junior golf tournaments in Colorado, Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch in all likelihood came to the end of the line on Friday.

But while there may be some mixed feelings about leaving the junior ranks, she certainly went out on a high note.

Weinstein, who almost always has found her way to the top of the leaderboard in major Colorado girls tournaments over the last 13 months, did it again at Indian Tree Golf Club.

The 18-year-old Regis Jesuit High School graduate clawed her way back from an opening-round 77 to win the girls title Friday in the Colorado Junior PGA Championship, the second major in the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado.

“I think this is my last Colorado junior tournament,” Weinstein said. “That’s really crazy because I’ve been playing in them for nine years — NINE YEARS. So it’s really special to end up champion, to go out with a bang. That’s super cool.”

Friday’s result means that Weinstein’s victories since June of last year have included the 2015 CWGA Junior Stroke Play and CJGA Junior Series Championship, and the 2016 5A state high school tournament, the Colorado Junior Amateur and now the Colorado Junior PGA Championship. She also placed 15th in the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships last year, marking the best finish ever by a Coloradan in the girls 15-17 age group there.

Weinstein (left and above) has won both of the girls JGAC major titles in 2016, though it’s unlikely the Regis University signee will play in the last two junior majors of the year.

“I’m just glad that all my hard work has finally paid off because I had a really rough time before (the state high school tournament) last year,” she said. “I worked really hard and got through it. Now I’m here. To have that year of success makes me really happy and really proud of how I worked hard.”

On Friday, Weinstein rallied from a two-stroke deficit by shooting a 4-under-par 31 on the front nine. And despite a double bogey on the final hole, she posted a 1-under-par 69 for the day, giving her an 8-over-par 218 total.

“My putting was on point today,” said Weinstein, who noted she put in several hours on the practice green during tournament week. “I didn’t miss a putt except for the last hole (a three-putt). Everything was just working for me.”

The victory Friday earned Weinstein an automatic berth in the national PGA Junior Championship, scheduled for Aug. 9-12 in Rumford, R.I.

Delaney Elliott (left) of Superior, a Montana State signee, played her final six holes in 1 under par on Friday to make a run at the title. The Monarch High School graduate closed with a 71 to check in at 219, one back of Weinstein.

“I’d rather be first,” Elliott said of her performance, one of the last of her junior career. “I played pretty well today, but I missed a few putts (including two 4-footers), which kind of hurts, knowing I had a couple of short ones I could have made.

“But I thought I gave it a good run. I played well down the stretch (getting up and down for pars on 15 and 18 and making a 4-foot birdie on 16). And (Mary and I) have been friends for a long time. We’ve been playing together since we were about 10.”

Fourteen-year-old Charlotte Hillary of Englewood finished third at 224 after carding a 75 on Friday.

Colorado Junior PGA Championship https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/14/colorado-junior-pga-championship/ Thu, 14 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/14/colorado-junior-pga-championship/ AJ Ott of Fort Collins, who has finished runner-up in two major junior tournaments in the last five weeks, used a spectacular finish Thursday to put himself in ideal position to notch a victory this time around.

The Colorado State University signee holed out from 138 yards for eagle on his final shot of the day and tied a course record at Indian Tree Golf Club with a 7-under-par 63 Thursday during the second round of the Colorado Junior PGA Championship.

That stellar performance gave Ott (pictured) a nine-stroke lead heading into the final round of the second major in the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado.

Meanwhile, in a tightly packed girls tournament, Jaclyn Murray of Grand Junction, a member of the CWGA’s 2016 Junior Americas Cup team, grabbed a one-stroke lead heading into the final round. The 17-year-old from Regis Jesuit High School, who finished second in last year’s CWGA Junior Match Play, made two birdies Thursday and shot a 4-over-par 74, leaving her at 7-over 147 overall.

Ott, who recently finished second in both the AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior and the national PGA Junior Series event at the Air Force Academy, closed his bogey-free round with a 138-yard eagle on the 452-yard par-4 18th hole. That gave him five birdies and an eagle on the day.

Overall, Ott will go into Friday’s final round with an 11-under-par 129 total. That’s nine shots better than 2015 CGA Junior Player of the Year Coby Welch of Highlands Ranch (67 Thursday) and 2015 4A state high school champion Jackson Solem of Longmont (71). Three players share fourth place at 139: Andrew McCormick of Denver (66 Thursday), David Leede of Greenwood Village (70) and Tyler Zhang of Lone Tree (70).

The girls tournament is a far different affair, with six players trailing Murray by five strokes or fewer. Delaney Elliott of Superior, who has signed to play college golf at Montana State, is one out of the lead after a second-round 75. Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch, winner of both the 5A state high school tournament and the Colorado Junior Amateur this year, shares third place at 149 with Charlotte Hillary of Englewood. Weinstein carded a 72, while Hillary’s 71 was the best girls score on Friday.

Also within a handful of the lead are Sarah Hwang of Monument (151), Hannah More of Littleton (152) and 2015 CWGA Junior Match Play winner Amy Chitkoksoong of Aurora (152).

After 36 holes, the girls’ field was cut down to 15 players and the boys’ to 31.

And They’re Off https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/13/and-theyre-off-2/ Wed, 13 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/13/and-theyre-off-2/ AJ Ott (left) of Fort Collins, a fixture on the leaderboards of major Colorado junior golf tournaments over the last two years, is back at it.

The 18-year-old, who will play college golf for Colorado State beginning this fall, shot a 4-under-par 66 Wednesday at Indian Tree Golf Club in Arvada to grab a one-stroke lead in the boys division of the Colorado Junior PGA Championship, the second major of the inaugural season of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado.

In the girls tournament, which is being held simultaneously at the same site, three players share the first-round lead: 2015 CWGA Junior Match Play winner Amy Chitkoksoong of Aurora and runner-up Jaclyn Murray of Grand Junction, and Delaney Elliott of Superior, who will play college golf at Montana State starting this fall. Chitkoksoong and Murray will be Colorado teammates later this month at the Girls Junior Americas Cup in Modesto, Calif. The three co-leaders shot 3-over-par 73s on Wednesday.

Both the boys and girls championships will be 54-hole affairs.

Ott, runner-up earlier this season in both the AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior and the national PGA Junior Series event at the Air Force Academy, made five birdies and one bogey in Wednesday’s opening round.

Jackson Solem of Longmont, the reigning 4A state high school champion, sits in second place at 67 after a five-birdie day. The other three players who posted sub-par rounds on Wednesday were Tyler Zhang of Lone Tree, David Leede of Greenwood Village and Reese Leiker of Littleton, all of whom carded 69s.

In the girls event, a group four back of the co-leaders includes Mary Weinstein of Highlands Ranch, winner of the Colorado Junior Amateur and the 5A state high school meet earlier this year; 4A state champion Erin Sargent of Longmont; Sarah Hunt of Parker; and Amelia Lee of Castle Rock.

The action will continue through Friday for both the boys and girls.

Girls State Golf Roundup https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/23/girls-state-golf-roundup/ Mon, 23 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/23/girls-state-golf-roundup/

The wind blew so hard during one squall Monday afternoon at CommonGround Golf Course that multiple golf bags were toppled and several players and spectators alike were sent running for cover.

Later in the day, when the weather improved somewhat, it was Regis Jesuit senior Mary Weinstein who was blowing away the competition at the girls 5A state high school tournament.

Just hours before she was scheduled to graduate from high school, Weinstein played her last eight holes in 3 under par and birdied her last two in opening up a four-stroke lead at the halfway point of the state meet.

“The beginning of my round wasn’t the best, but I got it back at the end, so I was pretty happy with that,” said Weinstein (pictured), a member of the Hale Irwin Elite Player Program based at CommonGround.

Weinstein, the 2015 CWGA Junior Player of the Year, shot a 1-under-par 71 and is 18 holes away from finishing her high school career with a state title.

“Every day is a new day (and) anyone can shoot whatever they want, but if I can keep this up …” said the Regis University golf signee.

Though Weinstein hasn’t won a state high school title before, last year she certainly established herself as a premier junior player in the state. She won the CWGA Junior Stroke Play and the CJGA Junior Series Championship. She placed a distant second to CWGA Player of the Year Jennifer Kupcho at the CWGA Stroke Play, and ended up 15th in the prestigious IMG Academy Junior World Golf Championships.

On a day when the conditions went from sunny, cool and breezy to strong winds (left), cold and light rain to sunny, cool and relatively calm, Weinstein was the only player to break 75 at CommonGround. Sharing second place, at 3-over 75, are fellow seniors Morgan Sahm of Grandview and Delaney Elliott of Monarch, and junior Jordan Remley of Ralston Valley. At 76 are 2015 CWGA Junior Match Play champ Amy Chitkoksoong of Grandview and Jaclyn Murray of Regis.

Remley is on the leaderboard despite a triple bogey and a double bogey, and Chitkoksoong despite a quadruple bogey.

“There were a couple holes where I blew up,” said Remley, who only has been playing golf for 2 1/2 years. “I just had to come back from those. I came back and fought from there.”

Sahm, the 2015 CJGA Tournament of Champions girls winner, has placed in the top 10 in each of her first three trips to state. But on Monday, the worst of the weather came up when she was finishing, and she three-putted her 16th and 18th holes and missed a short birdie putt on her 17th.

“I just want to finish strong and I know we have a strong team this year, so it would be really cool to win (a state title),” said Sahm, a University of Northern Colorado signee. “I’m really excited. It would be a cool way to end golf at Grandview.”

Another NCAA Division I signee who hopes to finish her high school career with a bang is Elliott, who has signed with Montana State.

“I’m really looking forward to tomorrow,” she said. “I just want to stay patient and be committed.”

In the 5A team competition, Weinstein’s Regis Jesuit squad (14-over-par 230) leads by eight strokes in its quest for a third consecutive state title. Sahm’s Grandview team is in second at 238.

Sargent Grabs Top Spot in 4A Meet at Pueblo CC: Senior Erin Sargent from Silver Creek, who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur last year, shot a 3-over-par 75 Monday at Pueblo Country Club and holds a one-stroke lead heading into Tuesday’s final round of the girls 4A state tournament.

Sargent, a University of Wyoming signee who finished third at state last year, made two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey in the first round.

Caroline Jordaan of Colorado Academy holds second place at 76, while Kelsey McKenna of Air Academy is third at 77 despite two double bogeys.

Colorado Academy appears destined to end Cheyenne Mountain’s team-title win streak at three as CA stands at 28-over-par 244 and with a 21-stroke advantage over Cheyenne Mountain.
