Derek Tolan – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf Fri, 05 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/cga-favicon-150x150.png Derek Tolan – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf 32 32 Not This Year https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/10/05/not-this-year-2/ Fri, 05 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/10/05/not-this-year-2/ A four-round total of 4-over-par 288 was necessary to advance to the Second Stage of Web.com Tour Q-school on Friday in Nebraska City, but Coloradans Derek Tolan and Chris Korte fell five strokes shy of the mark, so their quest for a 2019 Web card is over.

The top 21 finishers and ties from this First Stage site — where 74 golfers competed — will advance.

Tolan, a two-time CoBank Colorado Open champion from Highlands Ranch who played his college golf at the University of Colorado, and Korte, a former University of Denver golfer who lives in Littleton, both tied for 34th place at 9-over-par 293.

Tolan closed with a 2-over 73 on Friday, making three birdies, three bogeys and a final-hole double bogey.

Korte fired a 74 on Friday. He was 1 under for the day through 13 holes, but went 4 over the rest of the way.

Last week, four players with strong Colorado connections advanced from a First Stage Q-school tournament to Second Stage — Zahkai Brown of Golden, fellow former Colorado State University golfer Blake Cannon, and former CU players Yannik and Jeremy Paul.

Seven other First Stage tournaments are scheduled for next week. Then there will be five Second Stage tourneys from Oct. 30-Nov. 9. The Final Stage is Dec. 6-9 in Chandler, Ariz., where 2018 Web.com Tour cards will be distributed.

Here are this week’s First-Stage scores for all the players with strong Colorado ties:

Oct. 2-5, 2018 (final) in Nebraska City
(Top 21 finishers and ties after 72 holes advance to Second Stage)

Pivotal Round Awaits https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/10/04/pivotal-round-awaits/ Thu, 04 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/10/04/pivotal-round-awaits/ The bad news is, if the Q-school First Stage tournament in Nebraska City had ended on Thursday, Colorado residents Chris Korte and Derek Tolan would have seen their hopes for earning a 2019 Web.com Tour card end.

The good news is, the tournament didn’t conclude on Thursday, and Korte and Tolan are well within striking distance of advancing to the Second Stage.

The top 21 finishers and ties after four rounds will move on, and after Thursday’s third round, Korte is in 30th place and Tolan in 33rd. Korte, a former University of Denver player who lives in Littleton, is two strokes out of 21st place, while Tolan, a former University of Colorado golfer who resides in Highlands Ranch, is three out of 21st.

Korte double bogeyed the 18th hole on Thursday to shoot a 2-over-par 73, leaving him at 6-over 219 overall. Tolan carded a third-round 72, putting him at 220.

Halfway Point https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/10/03/halfway-point-6/ Wed, 03 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/10/03/halfway-point-6/ Coloradans Chris Korte and Derek Tolan didn’t do themselves any big favors with the scores they posted on Wednesday in a Web.com Q-school First Stage tournament in Nebraska City, but considering that no one shot lower than 70 on a windy day, no major damage was done.

In fact, despite shooting a 4-over-par 75 in round 2, Korte actually moved three spots up the scoreboard. And Tolan is still well within striking distance of advancing in the Q-school process despite a 78 on Wednesday.

The top 21 finishers and ties after four rounds will advance to the Second Stage of Q-school. At the halfway point, Korte is in 30th place and Tolan in 40th.

Korte, a Littleton resident and former University of Denver golfer, sits at 4-over-par 146, two strokes from the player currently in 21st place. And Tolan, a University of Colorado golfer who lives in Highlands Ranch, checked in at 148, four out of the 21st spot.

Two-time CoBank Colorado Open champion Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch opened with a 1-under-par 70 that left him in 24th place in the 72-hole event. And Chris Korte of Littleton posted a 71 that put him in 33rd place in the 74-man field.

The top 21 finishers and ties after four rounds will advance to the Second Stage of Q-school.

Colorado Fixture Since 1939 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/08/16/colorado-fixture-since-1939/ Thu, 16 Aug 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/08/16/colorado-fixture-since-1939/ The oldest continuously-held open golf championship in Colorado will be conducted for the 80th time this weekend.

Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction will host the Rocky Mountain Open Friday through Sunday (Aug. 17-19).

As usual, a strong field will be on hand.

Two-time CoBank Colorado Open champion Derek Tolan will be one of the bigger names competing. The former University of Colorado golfer won the Navajo Trail Open in Durango in June.

Also entered are three-time champion Monte Montgomery, a former Grand Junction resident; Doug Rohrbaugh, who has played in two PGA Tour Champions majors this year; 2017 champion Justin Keiley, a former BYU golfer; 2017 CGA Amateur champion Glenn Workman, the low amateur at the RMO last year before turning pro; former University of Colorado golfer Derek Fribbs, the 2015 RMO runner-up; Dillon Stewart, the reigning Junior America’s Cup individual champion; three-time Wyoming State Open winner Kane Webber; and University of Denver men’s coach Erik Billinger.

The RMO has a rich history in western Colorado. Among the winners of the tournament is Orville Moody, who captured the 1975 title six years after claiming victory at the U.S. Open. Babe Didrikson Zaharias, named the top female athlete of the first half of the 20th century, finished third in the 1946 RMO as an amateur and competed in 1950 as a pro. Nate Lashley, a rookie on the PGA Tour this season, won the RMO in 2014.

Tour Roundup https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/02/02/tour-roundup-2/ Fri, 02 Feb 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/02/02/tour-roundup-2/ Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch earned conditional status on PGA Tour Lationoamerica on Friday by finishing 19th in the fourth and final Q-school tournament, in Pilar, Argentina.

The former University of Colorado golfer, a two-time winner of the CoBank Colorado Open, posted rounds of 71-72-68-74 for a 3-under-par 285 total. Tolan played the two par-5s on the back nine in 3 over par, costing him a shot at exempt status for 2018.

The winner of the tournament (Cristobal Del Solar) will be exempt for the entire Latinoamerica season, while the next 10 finishers are exempt for the first half of the year. The rest of the players placing in the top 35 and ties will have conditional status.

Tolan (pictured) played in 11 PGA Tour Latinoamerica tournaments in 2015 and ’16 combined, recording a best finish of fifth place in 2015. The Denver native has also played in five PGA Tour events — including the 2002 U.S. Open as a 16-year-old — and 10 Web.com tournaments.

The PGA Tour Latinoamerica season begins March 15 with the Guatemala Open. Earlier this year, three other players with major Colorado ties also earned conditional status on PGA Tour Latinoamerica through other Q-school tournaments: former Buff golfer Jeremy Paul, Cole Nygren of Longmont and former University of Denver golfer Chris Gilman.

No Weekend Play at Phoenix Open for Clark, but Laird in 8th Place: Denver native Wyndham Clark missed the cut on Friday in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the eighth PGA Tour start of his pro career.

Clark, who made it into the field via a sponsor exemption, shot rounds of 74-73 for a 5-over-par 147 total at TPC Scottsdale.

It was an up-and-down two days for Clark, who has a Web.com Tour card this year. The winner of the 2017 Pac-12 title and the 2010 CGA Amateur made two birdies and five bogeys on Thursday. In round 2, he carded an eagle, three birdies, five bogeys and a double bogey.

Clark has made two cuts in his eight PGA Tour starts.

Meanwhile, former Colorado State University golfer Martin Laird, a Scottsdale resident, backed up his first-round 68 with a 67 on Friday afternoon and moved into a share of eighth place at 7-under 135. After a five-birdie, one-bogey day, he trails co-leaders Rickie Fowler and Bryson DeChambeau by three shots.

Former DU Golfer Arvidsson Leads in China: Former University of Denver golfer Oskar Arvidsson leads at the halfway point of an international PGA Tour China Q-school event in Haikou in southern China.

Arvidsson, who played in the 2016 British Open, fired a 5-under-par 67 on Friday, leaving him at 10-under 134 and with a two-stroke lead.

Former CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year Steven Kupcho shares 72nd place out of the 120-player field after rounds of 78-74.

The top 15 finishers after 72 holes will be fully exempt on PGA Tour China, with the next 25 conditionally exempt. This is the first of two international qualifiers for PGA Tour China.

Top 10s in California for Gilman, Nygren: Former University of Denver golfer Chris Gilman and Longmont resident Cole Nygren recorded top-10 finishes Friday in a Golden State Tour tournament in Bakersfield, Calif.

Gilman placed fourth with a three-day total of 12-under-par 204, ending up four behind winner Manav Shah of Bakersfield. Gilman went 66-70-68.

Nygren, who like Gilman will have conditional status on PGA Tour Latinoamerica in 2018, finished 10th on Friday. He posted scores of 71-69-71 for a 5-under 211 total.

No. 4 Proves Elusive https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/12/17/no-4-proves-elusive/ Sun, 17 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/12/17/no-4-proves-elusive/ Nick Mason of Denver is no stranger to being in contention at the Hawaii State Open, having won the tournament three times in the last decade.

This year was no exception as he led after rounds 1 and 2 on the Kohala Coast. But on Sunday, Mason was edged at the wire by another former Hawaii State Open champion, third-round playing partner Tadd Fujikawa.

Fujikawa birdied the par-3 17th hole Sunday to break a tie with Mason and went on to win the title by one stroke, marking the first pro victory in seven years for the former phenom.

Mason (pictured), who birdied the first three holes on Sunday, posted a 3-under-par 69 and finished at 11-under 205 (67-69-69). The former University of Hawaii-Hilo golfer, who has won the Hawaii State Open title in 2008, ’13 and ’15, carded five birdies and two bogeys on Sunday.

Fujikawa made eight birdies en route to a final-round 67.

Joining Mason in the top 10 from Colorado was two-time CoBank Colorado Open champion Derek Tolan, who placed eighth at 212 after closing with a 71.

In the senior open division, former Cherry Creek High School golfer Mike Reid finished third, behind champion David Ishii and 1987 U.S. Open champ Scott Simpson. Reid shot rounds of 68-72-73 for a 3-under-par 213 total, which left him six behind Ishii.

Some Cushion https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/11/02/some-cushion/ Thu, 02 Nov 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/11/02/some-cushion/ Wyndham Clark of Highlands Ranch, who has led since day 1, continues to set the pace at the Second Stage of Web.com Tour Q-school in Murrieta, Calif.

In fact, he’s pulling away from the next-best player in the 76-man field.

Clark (left), who placed 17th in the PGA Tour’s Sanderson Farms Championship on Sunday, increased his lead to six strokes after Thursday’s third round. He shot a 3-under-par 69, leaving him at 15-under 201 for 54 holes.

The 2017 Pac-12 Player of the Year has made two eagles, 15 birdies and four bogeys over three days.

The top 20 finishers and ties after Friday’s last round will advance to the Final Stage of Web qualifying, set for Dec. 7-10 in Chandler, Ariz. In Arizona, all the finishers will be guaranteed some Web.com Tour status in 2018, but the top 45 and ties there will earn some exempt status, while the rest will have conditional status. And it’s not unusual for some players with conditional status to get very few starts on the Web.com Tour.

Clark is the only Coloradan in the top 20 after Thursday in Murietta, but two other residents are close. Riley Arp of Fort Collins is in 21st place at 3-under-par 213 after firing a 73 on Thursday. And fellow former Colorado State University golfer Parker Edens, from Greeley, is tied for 31st after a third-round 75 left him at 215.

Three more Second Stage tournaments are scheduled for next week, with four other players with strong Colorado ties scheduled to tee it up.

Here are the scores for all the Coloradans competing this week:

Murrieta, Calif. (Top 20 Finishers and Ties Advance to Final Stage)
1. Wyndham Clark, Highlands Ranch 66-66-69–201
21. Riley Arp, Fort Collins 68-72-73–213
31. Parker Edens, Greeley 69-71-75–215
69. Jimmy Makloski, Pueblo 76-74-75–225

Dothan, Ala. (Top 19 Finishers and Ties Advance to Final Stage)
42. Derek Tolan, Highlands Ranch 73-76-70–219

Four of the eight players with strong Colorado ties who were competing in the Cornhusker State punched their tickets to the Second Stage of the three-stage qualifying process.

Those who advanced on Friday in Nebraska City by finishing in the top 24 and ties out of a field of 77 were Wyndham Clark (second place), former University of Colorado golfers Justin Bardgett (third) and Derek Tolan (20th), and Parker Edens of Greeley (23rd).

Clark, who won the Pac-12 Conference title in Boulder in April and then played in five PGA Tour events after going pro, finished with a 15-under-par 269 total. Only amateur Nick Voke of Ames, Iowa (268) was better.

Bardgett checked in at 271, while two-time CoBank Colorado Open champion Tolan (pictured) posted a 281 total. Edens, a former Colorado State University golfer, advanced on the number at 282.

Meanwhile, former CU golfer Jeremy Paul missed by one stroke in the San Diego First Stage tournament by closing with a 73 to tie for 26th place.

Seven more First Stage tournaments are scheduled for next week.

Wyndham Clark, who won the Pac-12 Championship in his home state of Colorado in the spring, grabbed the outright lead in a First Stage event in Nebraska City, where the top 24 finishers and ties after four rounds will advance to the Second Stage of Q-school.

Clark (pictured) backed up his first-round 66 with a 4-under-par 67 and stands at 9-under 133, two better than second-place Matt Jennings of Prairie City, Iowa. Through two rounds, Clark has made 10 birdies and one bogey.

Also in the top 24 in Nebraka City are Derek Tolan of Highlands Ranch (10th place, 139), fellow former University of Colorado golfer Justin Bardgett (10th, 139), former University of Northern Colorado player Conner Barr (18th, 141), and Parker Edens of Greeley (24th, 142).

And in San Diego, where the top 23 finishers will advance, former CU golfer Jeremy Paul is in sixth place at 5-under-par 135 and former Durango resident Tom Kalinowski is 13th at 137.

All of this week’s Q-school tourneys are 72-hole events.
