Korte, who just graduated from the University of Denver, was one of two former champions to win two matches on Wednesday and earn quarterfinal berths in the CGA’s oldest championship. Likewise advancing was 2012 champion Brian Dorfman of Cherry Creek Country Club.

Korte (left) defeated 2016 CGA Amateur champion Colin Prater of The Broadmoor Golf Club 3 and 1 in the round of 16. The former DU golfer made an eagle, seven birdies and nine pars in the 17 holes of a match in which he never trailed.

Meanwhile, Dorfman was 2 down to former University of Colorado golfer Brennan Dolan of Walnut Creek Golf Preserve through 15 holes, but won three of the last four to prevail in 19 holes in the round of 16. Earlier in the day, Dolan had beaten another former champion, 2015 winner Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course, 2 up.

Joining Korte and Dorfman in the quarterfinals will be Colorado State University teammates AJ Ott of Ptarmigan Country Club and Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club; stroke-play medalist Jackson Solem of The Fox Hill Club, a DU teammate of Korte last season; University of Colorado golfer Ross Macdonald of the Country Club at Castle Pines; former CSU-Pueblo golfer Jake Ice of Walking Stick Golf Course; and Josh Hill of Guilford College and the Omni Interlocken Resort.

In Thursday’s quarterfinals, Korte will face Macdonald, Staiano will play Hill, Solem will take on Dorfman, and Ott will meet Ice. Then the semifinals await on Thursday afternoon, setting the stage for Friday’s 36-hole final.

Bracket Set https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/06/18/bracket-set/ Mon, 18 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/06/18/bracket-set/ Three golfers who grew up in Colorado and who now compete for Colorado-based NCAA Division I golf programs led the way in Monday’s stroke-play qualifying round for the 118th CGA Match Play Championship at The Club at Ravenna in Littleton.

Jackson Solem of The Fox Hill Club, a University of Denver golfer, earned medalist honors with a 7-under-par 64 after an eight-birdie, one-bogey day. Solem, who made the match play round of 32 at last year’s U.S. Junior Amateur, will be the No. 2 seed in the match-play bracket, behind defending champion Chris Korte, who recently graduate from DU. Korte shot a 74 on Monday.

Colorado State University golfer AJ Ott of Ptarmigan Country Club finished second in Monday’s qualifying, shooting a 65. Another CSU Ram, 2017 CGA Player of the Year Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club, carded a 67 for third place in stroke play.

Among the five players who posted a 68 was 2015 CGA Match Play champion Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course. Another former champion, 2012 winner Brian Dorfman of Cherry Creek Country Club, also broke 70, with a 69.

In all, 64 players will advance to match play, which begins on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will each feature two rounds of matches, setting the stage for Friday’s 36-hole final.

The golfers who shot 79 on Monday played off for the final spot in the match-play bracket, with Blake Schneiter earning the final berth.

Ravenna is hosting the CGA Match Play — the CGA’s oldest championship — for the second straight year, marking the first time the championship has been held at the same site in consecutive years since 2000-01.

Close Call https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/05/01/close-call-11/ Tue, 01 May 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/05/01/close-call-11/ The University of Denver men’s golf team came ever so close to earning a team title in a major college tournament for the first time in four years — and to landing the automatic NCAA Regional berth that would have come with it.

Alas, it wasn’t to be.

After sharing the lead going into Tuesday’s final round of the Summit League Championship in Newton, Kan., the Pioneers finished two strokes out of the top spot in the eight-team field.

North Dakota State posted a three-round total of 29-over-par 893. DU shot a 1-under-par 287 — the second-best daily team score in the tournament — but NDSU was two better on Tuesday.

Denver’s last major team title came in this tournament in 2014.

The Pioneers put three players in the top seven individually, including two seniors who have been teammates all through high school (at Regis Jesuit) and college. Jake Kelley tied for fourth individually at 5-over-par 221 after closing with a 4-under 68. Fellow senior Chris Korte shared seventh place at 224 with freshman teammate Jackson Solem, with Korte shooting a 70 and Solem a 74 on Tuesday.

The final hole proved very costly for DU on Tuesday as Eric Hagen made a triple bogey and Korte and John Sand double bogeys.

Zach Schroeder of Fort Wayne claimed the individual title at 2-under-par 214.

In Contention Again https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/27/in-contention-again-2/ Thu, 27 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/27/in-contention-again-2/

Colorado has been sending teams to the Junior America’s Cup since 1975, and two of the state’s best six performances in the event have come in the last three years, with Davis Bryant of Aurora and Jackson Solem of Longmont playing on both of those teams.

On Thursday in Dupont, Wash., Bryant and Solem led the squad from the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado to a fourth-place showing in the tournament that features 18 teams from the western U.S., Canada and Mexico. Two years ago, the Coloradans were third, which matched the 2011 team for best finish by the Coloradans. This year’s fourth-place performance was the same as the golfers from the Centennial State posted in 1984, ’85 and 2012.

With the top three individual scores each day counting toward the team total, Colorado shot a 4-over-par 220 in Thursday’s final round at The Home Course. That left the Coloradans with a three-day total of 5-over 653, behind only champion British Columbia (645), runner-up Southern California (648) and third-place Utah (650).

It marked the fifth top-six finish at the JAC in the last seven years for Colorado.

Individually, Davis (left), winner of the first two JGAC majors of 2017, tied for ninth place in the 72-player field. He was even par for the tournament through 50 holes, but the future Colorado State University golfer bogeyed two of the last four for a 2-over-par 74 and a 2-over 218 total.

Solem, a former 4A state high school champion who has signed to play for the University of Denver, tied for 11th place after shooting the low round for any of the Coloradans at the JAC, a 1-under-par 71 on Thursday. After playing the last seven holes in 2 under, he carded a 3-over 219 total.

Dillon Stewart of Fort Collins also placed in the top 15, at 13th, despite going 2 par in his last six holes. He shot a 3-over 75 on Thursday, leaving him at 220.

Cal McCoy of Highlands Ranch rounded out the Colorado team, finishing 31st at 225 after closing with a 78.

Nolan Thoroughgood of British Columbia claimed the individual title on Thursday. He carded an 8-under-par 208 total after rounds of 71-67-70.

(The Colorado representatives are pictured, from left: Ashley Barnhart, Bryant, McCoy, captain Dustin Jensen, Solem, Stewart and Holly Champion. Jensen has served as a captain for all three of the Colorado teams that have placed in the top four since 2011.)

9. Davis Bryant, Aurora 72-72-74–218
11. Jackson Solem, Longmont 76-72-71–219

6 Out of Lead https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/26/6-out-of-lead/ Wed, 26 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/26/6-out-of-lead/ The Colorado team led for a while on Wednesday before losing some ground at the 45th Junior America’s Cup in Dupont, Wash. But the representatives of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado are still well within striking distance of their goal — to become the first Colorado squad to win the team title at the JAC.

Through Wednesday’s second round of the 54-hole event at The Home Course, the Coloradans share fourth place out of the 18 teams from the western U.S., Canada and Mexico. With the best three scores each day counting toward the team total, Colorado carded a 1-over-par 217 total in round 2, leaving the squad at 1-over 433 overall.

British Columbia leads at 427, while Southern California and Utah are tied for second at 429.

On Wednesday, Colorado counted the even-par 72s by U.S. Junior Amateur match play qualifiers Davis Bryant (pictured) of Aurora and Jackson Solem of Longmont, and the 73 by Dillon Stewart of Fort Collins. Each of the three made four birdies in round 2. Rounding out the foursome, Cal McCoy of Highlands Ranch carded a 75.

The Colorado contingent has recorded four top-six finishes at the JAC in the last six years, including matching the state’s best showing by placing third in 2015, when Bryant and Solem first competed.

Bryant, winner of the first two JGAC majors of 2017, is leading the way individually for the Coloradans as he shares seventh place in the 72-person field. He’s at even-par 144.

Stewart, who finished 52nd earlier this month at the IMG Academy Junior World Championships, is also in the top 10, at 145.

McCoy (147) shares 21st place, and Solem (148) is 25th.

Nolan Thoroughgood of British Columbia leads individually at 138 after rounds of 71-67.

The tournament will conclude on Thursday.

Strong Start https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/25/strong-start-4/ Tue, 25 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/25/strong-start-4/ Three Coloradans shot even-par rounds of 72 on Tuesday, leaving the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado squad in a tie for third place out of 18 teams after the opening round of the 45th Junior America’s Cup at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.

Davis Bryant of Aurora, who advanced to the round of 64 at last week’s U.S. Junior Amateur, was joined at 72 by Dillon Stewart of Fort Collins and Cal McCoy of Highlands Ranch, who birdied three of his last four holes. The fourth Coloradan, Jackson Solem of Longmont, who made it to the U.S. Junior Am round of 32, rounded out the scoring with a 4-over-par 76. (The Coloradans are pictured, from left: Solem, McCoy, Bryant and Stewart.)

With the top three scores from each four-person team counting toward the team total each day, Colorado stands at even-par 216 with two rounds remaining. That puts the Coloradans three strokes behind leader Utah, one shot back of second-place British Columbia and tied for third with Southern California.

The Junior America’s Cup features 18 teams and many of the best junior players from the western U.S., Canada and Mexico. The Colorado team has been very competitive at the event in recent years, having posted four top-six finishes in the last six years. The 2015 squad, featuring Bryant and Solem for the first of three consecutive appearances, finished third, matching the best showing ever by a Colorado team in the event.

Individually this year, McCoy, Bryant and Stewart share 12th place in the 72-player field, while Solem is 42nd. Bryant, winner of the first two JGAC majors of the 2017 season, and Stewart each made two birdies and two bogeys on the day. McCoy was 3 over through 14 holes, but birdied his 15th, 16th and 18th holes. Davis and Stewart, meanwhile, each played his back nine in 1-under 35. Solem, a former 4A state high school champion, carded one birdie, one bogey and two double bogeys on Tuesday.

Austin Carnese of Oregon and Ty Griggs of Northern California are tied for the individual lead at 4-under-par 68.

Play will continue through Thursday in the 54-hole event.

Up and Down Finale for Coloradan https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/20/up-and-down-finale-for-coloradan/ Thu, 20 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/20/up-and-down-finale-for-coloradan/ Jackson Solem of Longmont was in a heady position. The former 4A state high school champion had advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Junior Amateur and had taken a big step toward the Sweet 16.

The University of Denver signee made an eagle and two birdies in his first five holes and was 2 up in his round of 32 match on Thursday morning at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan. And he was still 2 up through eight holes on 12th-seeded Aman Gupta of Charlotte, N.C.

But that’s when things went awry for Solem (pictured) in a match that Gupta eventually won 2 and 1, ending the Coloradan’s run in arguably the most prestigious junior championship in the world.

Gupta won four straight holes (9-12) with pars as Solem went double bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey. Solem rebounded a bit with a birdie at No. 13, leaving him 1 down, but Gupta won No. 15 with a par then halved 16 and 17 with pars to end the match. In fact, Gupta parred the last 10 holes against Solem. (July 21 Update: Gupta ended up going to the quarterfinals before losing.)

Despite the defeat, Solem ended up advancing further in match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur than any Coloradan had since Wyndham Clark made the round of 16 in 2009.

And with Davis Bryant of Aurora making the round of 64, this year was the first time since 2013 that two Coloradans earned spots in the match-play bracket at this championship.

Here are the stroke-play scores for all the Coloradans who competed this week:ӬӬ

Breakthrough https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/19/breakthrough-5/ Wed, 19 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/19/breakthrough-5/ Jackson Solem of Longmont ended a drought for Coloradans competing in the U.S. Junior Amateur.

The former 4A state high school champion, playing in his first USGA championship, on Wednesday became the first Coloradan to win a match at the U.S. Junior Am since Wyndham Clark went to the round of 16 in 2009. Clark, the 2017 Pac-12 Conference champion, has competed in three PGA Tour events since turning pro last month.

Solem (pictured), a University of Denver signee, scored a 5 and 3 victory over another Jackson, Jackson Suber of Tampa, Fla., in the round of 64 Wednesday at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan. The other Coloradan who made match play, Davis Bryant of Aurora, went 21 holes Tuesday, but lost to South Korean Won Jun Lee, who’s competing in his fourth U.S. Junior Am.

Solem was 1 down after five holes, but never trailed after winning No. 6 with a par. Starting on No. 9, Solem won five of seven holes to close out the match. Overall on Wednesday, he finished 1 under par for 15 holes, making three birdies and a double bogey.

In Thursday morning’s round of 32, Solem will face 12th-seeded Aman Gupta of Charlotte, N.C., a 2 and 1 winner over Canadian James Song on Wednesday.

Should Solem advance to the round of 16 on Thursday afternoon, FS1 will be televising some of those matches beginning at 1:30 p.m. (MT).

Solem had qualified for the CoBank Colorado Open, which starts on Thursday, but had to withdraw with the conflict.

In Bryant’s case, as the USGA noted in its pre-tournament biographies, the Coloradan has been a scrapper since birth. After all, he was born 14 weeks premature, weighed 26 ounces at birth and didn’t go home from the hospital until he was 105 days old.

On Wednesday in the round of 64, that scrappiness came to the forefront again as Bryant had a tough draw for his opening match at the Junior Am. Competing against Lee, who has made match play in four U.S. Junior Amateurs and has advanced to the semifinals (2015) and quarterfinals (2016), Bryant rallied from being 2 down and took Lee to 21 holes. The Korean birdied that third extra hole for the victory.

Bryant, winner of the first two majors of the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado season, never led on Wednesday. He was 2 down after Lee birdied two of the first three holes and 2 down again after 13 holes. But the future Colorado State University golfer squared the match with a par on the ninth hole and a par on the 18th hole.

In extra holes in his second U.S. Junior appearance, Bryant went par-bogey-par, while Lee went par-bogey-birdie.

For the match, Bryant was 2 over par, having made one birdie and three bogeys.

Here are the stroke-play scores for all the Coloradans competing this week:

The Next Step https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/18/the-next-step/ Tue, 18 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/18/the-next-step/ A Coloradan made match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur for the first time in three years on Tuesday, but representatives of the state didn’t stop there.

Two junior golfers from Colorado ended up advancing to the 64-golfer match play bracket, marking the first time that’s happened since Josh Seiple and Spencer Painton pulled it off in 2013.

Moving on Tuesday at Flint Hills National Golf Club in Andover, Kan., were Jackson Solem of Longmont and Davis Bryant of Aurora, who next week will be Colorado teammates for the third consecutive year at the Junior America’s Cup tournament. (The two are pictured, with Bryant at left.)

Solem, a former 4A state high school champion who will play his college golf at the University of Denver beginning this fall, came back from a first-round 75 to shoot a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday, finishing 39th in stroke play in his first U.S. Junior Am. Solem made seven birdies and five bogeys in round 2. He recorded just one par in his final 10 holes on Tuesday.

Two years after making his U.S. Junior Amateur debut by shooting 81-80 as a 15-year-old, Bryant proved a much different player this time around, finishing 47th out of 156 players in the 36-hole stroke-play portion of the championship. The winner of both Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado majors held so far this year, Bryant shot rounds of 71-74 for a 3-over-par 145 total. The future Colorado State University golfer, who made three birdies and three double bogeys on Tuesday, ended up 13 strokes behind medalist Austin Eckroat of Edmond, Okla.

Match play will begin on Wednesday, and if either Solem or Bryant wins in the round of 64, it would be the first time since Wyndham Clark went to the round of 16 in 2009 that a Coloradan has won a match in the U.S. Junior Amateur.

The third Colorado competing in the U.S. Junior Am, TJ Shehee of Mead, didn’t advance to match play after posting rounds of 78-80 for a 158 total.

Here are the scores for all the Coloradans competing this week:

Advance to Match Play
39. Jackson Solem, Longmont 75-69–144
47. Davis Bryant, Aurora 71-74–145
Failed to Advance to Match Play
127. TJ Shehee, Mead 78-80–158
