With at least the top 100 players and ties after four rounds advancing to Stage II — set for Oct. 15-18 in Venice, Fla. — Paige Crawford of Colorado Springs leads the local contingent. She made six birdies on Friday and shot a 2-under-par 70 at the Dinah Shore Course, giving her a 1-under 143 total, good for a share of 35th place.

Other locals in the top 100 with two rounds remaining are Ashley Tait of Littleton (145, 61st place), former Coloradan Elizabeth Wang (also at 145), University of Colorado golfer Robyn Choi (146, 78th place) and former Buff Brittany Fan (147, 100th place).

Celina Yuan of Australia holds the 36-hole lead at 9-under 135.

The field will be cut after 54 holes to a minimum of the low 125 players and ties.

This year in the LPGA qualifying process, a Q-Series replaces the third and final stage. There, a maximum of 108 players will compete in two 72-hole stroke-play tournaments held on consecutive weeks Oct. 22-Nov. 3 at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. Scores will be cumulative over the two weeks.

Amateurs who earn their cards can defer their acceptance of LPGA membership until July 1, 2019.

Here are the round-by-round scores for the players with strong Colorado connections:

35. Paige Crawford of Colorado Springs 73-70–143
61. Ashley Tait of Littleton 71-74–145
61. Amateur Elizabeth Wang, who grew up in Colorado 76-69–145

Making Inroads https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/18/making-inroads-4/ Tue, 18 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/18/making-inroads-4/ Jaylee Tait of Raccoon Creek Golf Course, Maddie Kern of Hyland Hills, Mary Weinstein of CommonGround Golf Course and former University of Houston golfer Emily Gilbreth won two matches each on Tuesday to advance to the championship flight semifinals of the 102nd CWGA Match Play at Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City.

Tait (pictured), a Montana State golfer who lost in the finals of last year’s CWGA Match Play to Jennifer Kupcho, scored a 4-and-3 victory in Tuesday afternoon’s quarterfinals over University of Wyoming golfer Megan Knadler. Earlier in the day, Knadler rallied from being 2 down after five holes to defeat qualifying medalist Katrina Prendergast, a Colorado State University golfer, 2 and 1.

Weinstein, the 2016 Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s 2016 Girls Player of the Year and a University of Denver golfer, defeated CSU women’s head coach Annie Young in 19 holes in the quarterfinals. Young, the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links champ, was 2 up through 10, but had to birdie the 18th hole to square the match. Then Weinstein parred the first extra hole to advance.

Tait will meet Kern and Weinstein will face Gilbreth in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Meanwhile, three former champions advanced on Tuesday to the final four in the senior championship flight.

Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Christie Austin and Kim Eaton easily won quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, and will be joined in Wednesday’s semifinals by 2014 winner Deb Hughes from Green Valley Ranch Golf Club and second-seeded Tiffany Maurycy of Cherry Creek Country Club. In the semis, Austin will face Hughes and Eaton will meet Maurycy.

Austin, the qualifying medalist and 2007 champion, defeated Katty Rothberg of Cherry Creek CC 6 and 5 on Tuesday. Eaton, a three-time senior winner of the Match Play and a four-time quarterfinalist in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, scored a 7-and-6 win over Jennifer Hocking of Colorado Springs Country Club on Tuesday.

Hughes edged Meghan Christensen of The Club at Cordillera in 19 holes, winning the last two holes with pars to advance. Maurycy beat Nancy Ziereis of Valley Country Club, 5 and 4.

The semifinals for all seven flights, including championship and senior championship, will be held on Wednesday, with the finals set for Thursday. The championship flight title match will be a 36-hole affair, with each other finale being 18 holes.

Trips to San Diego on the Line https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/05/trips-to-san-diego-on-the-line/ Wed, 05 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/05/trips-to-san-diego-on-the-line/ When U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifying was held in Colorado last year, no in-state residents met the standard to earn a spot in the national championship.

This year, the field for the Women’s Am qualifier is about a third smaller than last year — but so are the number of national berths at stake.

CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora is scheduled to host the qualifying tournament on Monday (July 10), when 42 competitors are scheduled to compete for four spots in the national championship, set for Aug. 7-13 at San Diego Country Club. That course is where Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Jill McGill won her U.S. Women’s Amateur in 1993.

Several players who have qualified for the U.S. Women’s Am in recent years are in the field, including Colorado State University golfer Katrina Prendergast (2016 qualifier), Erin Sargent of Longmont (2015) and Jaylee Tait of Littleton (2014).

Also scheduled to compete are 2016 Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado girls player of the year Mary Weinstein, 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior qualifiers Jaclyn Murray and Shelby Poynter, 5A state high school champion Amy Chitkoksoong, University of Colorado teammates Gillian Vance and Brittany Fan, and Stanford golfer Calli Ringsby.

Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster is exempt from qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Am based on her spot in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings (now 11th).

Ellen Secor, a CSU teammate of Prendergast, qualified earlier this week for the U.S. Women’s Am. The Portland resident made the grade by shooting an even-par 72 and tying for fifth place in a qualifying tournament in Cameron Park, Calif.

Kupcho Seeks CWGA Stroke Play Three-Peat https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/16/kupcho-seeks-cwga-stroke-play-three-peat/ Fri, 16 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/16/kupcho-seeks-cwga-stroke-play-three-peat/ Perhaps it’s time to wonder, “What will Jennifer do next?”

Especially regarding how Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster fares at the CWGA Stroke Play, that’s a particularly relevant question to ponder at this point.

When the 70th Stroke Play is held Monday through Wednesday (June 19-21) at Lone Tree Golf Club, the 20-year-old will be attempting to accomplish a couple of things not done for many a moon.

If Kupcho (pictured) wins next week, she’ll become the first player to three-peat “” win the title three consecutive years “” since Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore won four in a row from 1994 to ’97. And a victory would make Kupcho the first golfer since Wendy Werley in 1988 and ’89 to claim the title in fourth straight CWGA majors (the Stroke Play and the Match Play).

Beyond that, it’ll be interesting to see if Kupcho can surpass the very high standard she’s set for herself in her last two CWGA Stroke Play victories. It may be difficult to fathom, but her average winning margin in those events was 20 shots, as she prevailed by 21 in 2015 and by 19 last year.

And, by the way, Kupcho won the first of her four CWGA majors at Lone Tree, the 2014 Match Play.

The Stroke Play will serve as a bit of a warm-up leading up to the U.S. Women’s Open for Kupcho, who’s currently No. 11 in the women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings. Just two days after the disappointment of finishing second at the Women’s NCAA Division I Championships after leading by two going into her penultimate hole, Kupcho earned medalist honors for the second straight year in Colorado-based Women’s Open qualifying. Arguably the most prestigious tournament in women’s golf will be contested July 13-16 at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

In all, 59 players will compete in the CWGA Stroke Play, with flighting taking place after the completion of 36 holes in the 54-hole event.

Among the other entrants are University of Colorado golfer Gillian Vance, a former 5A state high school champion who finished second to Kupcho in the 2016 Stroke Play; Jaylee Tait, runner-up to Kupcho in the 2016 CWGA Match Play; and Mary Weinstein, the 2016 Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado girls Player of the Year who placed second to Kupcho in the 2015 Stroke Play.

Is Eight Enough? https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/08/is-eight-enough/ Thu, 08 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/08/is-eight-enough/

Janet Moore of Centennial won her record eighth CWGA Mashie Championship and Susie Roh of Denver her first, but they both have an impressive rate of success in the four-ball match play event.

Moore, a Colorado Golf Hall of Famer, has captured the title eight of the 23 times the tournament has been held. And Roh, her teammate, is now one-for-one after claiming the championship in her first time competing.

In Thursday’s championship flight final at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, Moore and Roh scored a 3-and-2 victory over two college golfers who reside in Colorado, 2016 champion Gillian Vance from the University of Colorado and partner Jaylee Tait from Montana State University.

Moore put her team over the top with a 6-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, while Vance missed a 5-footer that would have prolonged the match.

Moore has now won Mashie titles with three different partners “” six times with fellow Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Christie Austin, once with Moore competing with her daughter Sarah, and once with Roh. (The 2017 champs are pictured together at top and below, with Moore at left.) But Moore’s last Mashie title with any partner had been 2011.

“The strength of my game in Mashies is picking great partners,” Moore said with a laugh. “And I did that really well this time. Susie is a great player and held us in there the whole time. And she played great yesterday (at Saddleback Golf Club in the semifinals); she shot 68. I didn’t contribute on any hole until the very last hole.”

For Roh, a former professional who once won a mini-tour event and now is a very good mid-amateur player, it was her first CWGA championship of any sort. Meanwhile, it’s believed to be Moore’s 20th, with 15 two-person team titles complementing her five CWGA Stroke Play championships in the 1990s.

“I was really nervous the first day and Janet carried us (in the quarterfinals). Then we kind of flip-flopped (in the semifinals),” Roh said. “But every match we had was a grind.”

In the final, Vance and Tait won the first hole with Tait’s birdie, but they fell behind when Roh carded back-to-back birdies on holes 7 and 8. Roh gave her team a 3-up lead with a two-putt birdie on No. 14. Then after Vance and Tait won the 15th hole with a par, Moore ended things with her birdie on 16.

“We were both very consistent “” too consistent,” said Tait, the 2016 CWGA Match Play runner-up who was competing in the Mashie for the first time. “We birdied the first hole, then nothing after that. You can’t really win this with pars.” (Tait and Vance are pictured together, with Tait at left.)

Added Vance: “It was a long drought. But it was just fun to play with these women. We played with Janet last year (in the final), and it’s just always fun to play with them. I know they’re super good. It’s just a blast to be out here, honestly.”

In both the semifinals and the final, Moore, 52, and Roh, 43, defeated opponents made up of college players. But on Thursday, Roh often out-drove Vance, a former 5A state high school champion, and Tait, a former U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier.

“Susie here can bomb it, so that was fun,” Moore said. “Her length is definitely a huge plus “” and she’s just a competitor, so she’s fun to play with.

“But (college opponents) come out and they get a little nervous that they’re going to get beat by an old lady. We have that advantage that we’re older and maybe can sneak up on them a little bit.”

But no matter the opponent, and no matter how many CWGA championships she has under her built, adding another puts a smile on Moore’s face.

“It’s very satisfying,” she said. “It’s fun to still be able to compete.”

The Mashie marked the first CWGA championship of 2017.

Red Hot https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/06/16/red-hot/ Thu, 16 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/06/16/red-hot/ Jennifer Kupcho has accomplished more in the last two months than many elite-level amateur golfers do in a lifetime.

To finish up her freshman season of college golf at Wake Forest, the Westminster resident finished second at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, seventh in the NCAA Stanford Regional, and sixth in the Women’s NCAA Finals.

And back in Colorado, she qualified for her first U.S. Women’s Open and won two CWGA championships in the course of eight days.

The second of those victories came on Thursday when the 19-year-old dominated in the final to win her second CWGA Match Play, this one the 101st version of the tourament, at Aurora Hills Golf Course.

“Jennifer is just such a special player,” noted Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Christie Austin, who watched her compete in the Women’s NCAA Finals and will be on hand next month at the U.S. Women’s Open.

In Thursday’s scheduled 36-hole title match that ended before noon, Kupcho (left and above) warmed up for her U.S. Women’s Open appearance with a 12-and-10 victory over Jaylee Tait of Littleton.

The margin was the largest in a CWGA Match Play final in at least the last decade, before which records aren’t complete.

Kupcho last week won the CWGA Mashie team event with University of Colorado golfer Gillian Vance, who Kupcho defeated in the Match Play semifinals. Overall, Kupcho has captured six CWGA championships, including the 2014 and ’16 Match Plays and the 2015 Stroke Play. She was the CWGA Player of the Year in both 2014 and ’15.

“It’s definitely awesome,” she said of her latest win. “The field was full of college players so that was exciting. And I love match play, so to win this for the second time was neat.”

On Thursday, Kupcho was 9 under par through the 26 holes and didn’t make a bogey. By her round-by-round recollection, she was 31 under par for 89 holes this week at Aurora Hills, including the 18-hole stroke-play qualifier.

“I like going under par,” Kupcho said with a smile. “In college it’s definitely harder to go under par. To come here and be able to do that is a lot of fun.

“I’ve definitely seen my game improve since I’ve gone to college. (Recent accomplishments) are just a continuation of everything.”

Against Tait (left), a Montana State golfer who qualified for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur, Kupcho was 8 up through 18 holes and closed things out with a two-putt birdie on the eighth hole of the second round.

“I just didn’t make enough birdies (one),” said the 20-year-old Tait, who placed third in the Big Sky Conference tournament this spring. “She played really well and she’s hitting it really well.

“I didn’t birdie any of the (seven) par-5s through 26 holes — and they’re not playing very long. That was my weakness. I think (Kupcho) birdied almost all of them (five of the seven), so I gave up a lot there. And she was making putts when she was outside of me.”

Tait’s older sister, Ashley, who won the 2008 CWGA Stroke Play, also lost in a CWGA Match Play final, falling to Chelsey Collins in 2009.

101st CWGA Match Play https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/06/15/101st-cwga-match-play/ Wed, 15 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/06/15/101st-cwga-match-play/ Jennifer Kupcho earned a spot in the finals of the CWGA Match Play for the second time in three years, and she’ll face Jaylee Tait for the title after both players posted 6-and-5 semifinal victories Wednesday at Aurora Hills Golf Course.

Meanwhile, two Colorado Golf Hall of Famers will square off for the senior championship flight crown as Kim Eaton and Christie Austin prevailed in Wednesday’s semifinals. Eaton, a two-time Senior Match Play champ, defeated 2014 senior winner Deb Hughes 6 and 5, while Austin overcame defending champ Lynn Zmistowski 3 and 2.

In a matchup of champion teammates from last week’s CWGA Mashie, Kupcho (pictured) beat University of Colorado golfer Gillian Vance on Wednesday in the open division, while Tait advanced with a victory over Brigham Young University golfer Anna Kennedy.

Kupcho, the 2014 and ’15 CWGA Player of the Year, in the last month and a half has qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open and finished sixth in the Women’s NCAA Finals as a Wake Forest freshman. Kupcho won the CWGA Match Play title in 2014.

Tait, younger sister of 2008 CWGA Stroke Play champion Ashley Tait, qualified for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur and currently plays golf for Montana State.

In the senior final, two multiple winners of the CWGA Senior Player of the Year honor will meet. Eaton, a three-time quarterfinalist in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, has earned the Senior POY award five times and Austin twice. Eaton was also CWGA Player of the Year four times.

The title matches in the championship flight, the senior championship flight and the three handicap flights are all scheduled for Thursday. To see all the championship and consolation brackets, CLICK HERE.

Two other college golfers from Colorado, Anna Kennedy (Brigham Young University) and Jaylee Tait (Montana State) will meet in the other semi after two victories each on Tuesday. Kennedy was the 15th seed out of the 16 players who made the championship flight.

Kupcho, the U.S. Women’s Open qualifier from Wake Forest who shot 65 to earn medalist honors on Monday, scored 3-and-2 wins over both Taylor Dorans and Calli Ringsby on Tuesday. Vance, a former state high school champion who now plays for the University of Colorado, prevailed in a 19-hole quarterfinal over Kylee Sullivan to advance. Tait prevailed 1 up in the quarters over former 5A state champ Mackenzie Cohen, while Kennedy posted a 7-and-5 win over Calli Gallacher.

In the quarterfinals of the senior championship flight, each of the top three seeds — all Colorado Golf Hall of Famers — won on Tuesday, including defending champion Lynn Zmistowski. Also advancing to Wednesday’s senior semifinals were top-seeded Kim Eaton, a two-time senior champ; 2007 senior winner Christie Austin, and 2014 senior champ Deb Hughes, the fifth seed.

Lucky 13 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/04/20/lucky-13/ Wed, 20 Apr 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/04/20/lucky-13/ Make it a baker’s dozen for the University of Denver women’s golf team.

Not that there was much suspense after each of the first two rounds, but the Pioneers extended their remarkable streak of conference championships to 13 on Wednesday by winning the Summit League title in Nebraska City.

The run includes three Summit League championships, nine in the Sun Belt Conference and one in the WAC.

A year after prevailing by 18 shots for the Summit title, the Pios steamrolled the nine-team field in winning by 52 strokes. Denver finished with a 14-over-par 878 total for three days.

It was DU’s second team victory of the season, and this one assured the Pioneers another berth in the NCAA regionals.

Meanwhile, Jessica Carty (pictured), a junior from Northern Ireland, claimed her first individual college title after leading wire-to-wire. With a 1-over-par 217 total, she prevailed by four strokes over teammate Mariell Bruun. In fact, all five DU players finished in the top eight individually.

Elsewhere in women’s league championships on Wednesday:

— Colorado State freshman Katrina Prendergast finished runner-up individually at the Mountain West Conference tournament in Rancho Mirago, Calif. By going 71-73-73 for a 1-over-par 217 total, Prendergast ended up five strokes behind champion Alexandra Kaui of UNLV. As a team, CSU placed sixth in the nine-team field.

— University of Colorado senior Alexis Keating held the outright lead at the Pac-12 tournament halfway through Wednesday’s final round in Pleasanton, Calif., but four bogeys over the final eight holes forced her to settle for fifth place overall.

It was Keating’s second top-five finish in the last two years at the Pac-12s, which is saying something considering it’s one of the powerhouse conferences in women’s golf.

Keating, who was also fifth at the Pac-12 meet at Boulder Country Club last year, posted a 2-over-par 74 total on Wednesday, leaving her at 6-under-par 210 overall, five strokes back of champion Linnea Strom of Arizona State.

CU finished fifth in the team race, matching its best showing in the Pac-12 Championships.

After the tournament, CU junior Esther Lee was named to the All-Pac-12 first team for the second consecutive year. She leads the Buffs with a 72.48 scoring average.

— Coloradan Jaylee Tait, a sophomore from Montana State, placed third individually Wednesday at the Big Sky Championship after taking the lead into the final round in Boulder City, Nev. Tait closed with a 3-over-par 75, giving her an even-par 216 total, four behind the top players. Northern Colorado tied for eighth place in the team competition.

CU’s Keating Fires 66 in Pac-12s https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/04/19/cus-keating-fires-66-in-pac-12s/ Tue, 19 Apr 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/04/19/cus-keating-fires-66-in-pac-12s/ The Metropolitan State University of Denver women’s golf team won its second consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title on Tuesday, while the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs claimed the men’s championship.

Meanwhile, University of Colorado senior Alexis Keating (pictured) shot a 6-under-par 66 and moved within a stroke of the individual lead at the formidable Pac-12 Conference tournament, and Jessica Carty continued to hold the top spot at the Summit League Championship as her University of Denver team all but assured itself its 13th consecutive conference title. Another local setting the pace in league championships is Coloradan Jaylee Tait of Montana State (Big Sky).

— The Metro State women defeated Colorado-Colorado Springs 4-0-1 in Tuesday’s title match of the RMAC Championship in Avondale, Ariz. Winning individual matches for MSU on Tuesday were Allie Johnston, Valerie Cruz, Dani Look and Lindsey Gullikson. On Monday, Taylor Walters of Colorado Mesa earned the individual title after rounds of 72-71.

— In the men’s RMAC title match in Goodyear, Ariz., CU-Colorado Springs defeated the Colorado School of Mines 3-1-1. Winning their matches for UCCS on Tuesday were Colin Prater, Zach Berhost and Chris Reina. CU-Colorado Springs won the regular-season RMAC title before also prevailing in the medal-match format at the RMAC tournament. Tuesday’s victory gives UCCS an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II West/South Central Region Championships. Meanwhile, claiming the individual RMAC title on Tuesday was Western New Mexico’s Calum Hill (69-67–136).

— At the women’s Pac-12 meet in Pleasanton, Calif., Keating made a big move with a seven-birdie 66, which left her a shot behind Southern California’s Gabriella Then going into Wednesday’s final round. Keating placed fifth at the 2015 Pac-12 meeting, shooting a final-round 66 at Boulder Country Club. On Tuesday, CU carded a sub-par team score for the second straight day — in this case a 4-under-par 284, which gives the Buffs a 6-under 570 total, leaving them in fifth place.

— At the women’s Summit League tournament in Nebraska City, Denver opened up a 40-stroke lead in its quest for consecutive conference title No. 13. DU shot a 5-under-par 283 as a team on Tuesday. The Pioneers’ five players are all within the top six individually, with Carty (69-72–141) leading the way by four strokes.

— At the women’s Big Sky tournament in Boulder City, Nev., Tait kept the top individual spot as an even-par 72 left her with a 3-under 141 total and a one-stroke advantage going into the final round.

— And at the women’s MWC championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif., freshman Katrina Prendergast of Colorado State sits in second place, one stroke back of UNLV’s Alexandra Kaui. Prendergast fired a 1-over-par 73, leaving her at even-par 144.
