And one of those eight, David Delich of The Broadmoor, has won the title three times over that period.

Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City will host this year’s Senior Match Play Monday through next Thursday (June 11-14). The event, limited to players 52 and older, will feature the round of 64 on Monday and two rounds each on Tuesday and Wednesday for those who advance. The 18-hole championship match is set for next Thursday morning.

Pat Bucci of West Woods Golf Club returns to defend the title he won last year, when he defeated Delich, the champion in 2007, ’11 and ’15.

Other former champions in the field are Jeff Oneth of Colorado Golf Club (2016), Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course (2013), Ray Makloski if Pueblo Country Club (2012), Guy Mertz of The Fox Hill Club (2010), Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club (2009) and Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club (2006).

Three of those former champs have already won CGA titles in 2018: Johnson in the Super-Senior Match Play, Polk with partner Bill Fowler in the Senior Four-Ball, and Mertz with son Nick in the Parent/Child.

Also scheduled to compete in the Senior Match Play are 2017 CGA Senior Amateur winner Steve Ivan of Patty Jewett Golf Course, 2016 Senior Amateur champ Kevin Ott of The Club at Rolling Hills, 2016 U.S. Senior Open qualifier John Hornbeck of Wyoming and 2017 CGA Senior Player of the Year Keith Atkins.

Early Showdown https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/28/early-showdown/ Wed, 28 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/28/early-showdown/ Defending champion Jeff Oneth of Colorado Golf Club and David Delich of The Broadmoor Golf Club won their opening matches on Wednesday in the 48th CGA Senior Match Play, setting up a meeting of the event’s two most recent champions in Thursday’s round of 16 at Blackstone Country Club in southeast Aurora.

Oneth (pictured) posted a 3-and-1 victory Wednesday over Steve Kass of Aurora Hills Golf Course, while three-time winner Delich scored a 6-and-5 win over Chris Patton of Red Rocks Country Club.

Another former champion who won in the round of 32 on Wednesday was 2013 winner Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course. Also advancing were 2015 CGA Senior Amateur champion Bill Fowler of The Club at Rolling Hills and 2016 CGA Senior Player of the Year Robin Bradbury of Walnut Creek Golf Preserve.

Three former champions were ousted in the round of 32: Colorado Golf Hall of Famer and four-time champ John Olive of The Broadmoor (5 and 4 by Bob Chandler of Foothills Golf Course), three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club ( 3 and 2 by Bradley Becker of Plum Creek Golf Club, and 2005 winner Kelly Crone of Highlands Ranch Golf Club (4 and 3 by Thomas McGeary of Highlands Ranch GC). Both the round of 16 and the quarterfinals are scheduled for Thursday, while the semifinals and the final are set for Friday.

Squaring Off https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/27/squaring-off-2/ Tue, 27 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/27/squaring-off-2/ Bob Schuler of Inverness Golf Club shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday to earn medalist honors and Jeff Oneth of Colorado Golf Club will be the No. 1 seed as the defending champion at the 48th CGA Senior Match Play.

The top 31 finishers in Tuesday’s stroke-play qualifying at Blackstone Country Club in Aurora, plus Oneth, will begin match play on Wednesday. A score of 80 or better was required to advance.

Schuler made three birdies and four bogeys to lead the way for a field that originally numbered 84.

Kelly Crone of Highlands Ranch Golf Club, the 2005 champion, was next best at 74 after a two-birdie round. Another former champ, 2009 winner Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club, posted a 75 along with 2016 CGA Senior Player of the Year Robin Bradbury of Walnut Creek Golf Preserve and John Hornbeck of Collindale Golf Course.

Also among those making match play were 2013 champ Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course (76), four-time winner John Olive of The Broadmoor Golf Club (78), three-time champion David Delich of The Broadmoor (78), and 2015 CGA Senior Amateur winner Bill Fowler of The Club at Rolling Hills (79).

Back for More https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/26/back-for-more-10/ Mon, 26 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/26/back-for-more-10/ Seven former champions are scheduled to be in the field when the 48th CGA Senior Match Play Championship begins on Tuesday (June 27) at Blackstone Country Club in southeast Aurora.

A total of 82 competitors are entered in the event, which will begin with a stroke-play round on Tuesday, with 32 players advancing to match play beginning on Wednesday.

Starting with the round of 16, two rounds of matches will be held both Thursday and Friday, with the 18-hole final scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The former CGA Match Play champs entered include Jeff Oneth (winner in 2016, who will be the No. 1 seed in this year’s bracket), David Delich (2015, ’11 and ’07), Tom Musselman (2014), Harry Johnson (2013), three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk (2009), Kelly Crone (2005) and Colorado Golf Hall of Famer John Olive (2003, ’02, ’01 and 1997).

2 in a Row? https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/04/2-in-a-row/ Sun, 04 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/04/2-in-a-row/ Though members of The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden make up less than 10 percent of the 84-man field, it probably wouldn’t be wise to bet against one of them winning the 45th CGA Senior Amateur this coming week.

After all, with the venue’s very challenging greens, course knowledge could play a large role in determining who is handed the trophy come Thursday. And considering two members who are CGA Senior Amateur champions are entered, the Rolling Hills contingent definitely should not be overlooked at the 54-hole championship, which will start on Tuesday.

Former CGA president Bill Fowler (pictured), who’s part of that contingent, will be looking to parlay his home-course advantage into a second straight Senior Amateur title after having prevailed at Colorado Golf Club last year. Among the other entrants from Rolling Hills are Scott Radcliffe, winner of the 2010 CGA Senior Amateur and the 2004 CGA Senior Match Play; and Sean Forey, the 2010 CGA Senior Player of the Year and recent runner-up in the CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play.

Joining Fowler and Radcliffe among the past champions entered are Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore (2014), winner of the 2016 CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play; Harry Johnson (2013); David Delich (2012); and Robert Polk (2005, ’07 and ’09). Other winners of CGA senior individual titles who will compete at Rolling Hills include Tom Musselman, Ray Makloski, Guy Mertz and Jeff Oneth, who won the 2016 CGA Senior Match Play. Robin Bradbury, who last month qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur and was low senior amateur in the Rocky Mountain Open, is also entered.

The field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after two rounds.

Worth noting: Until this year, the CGA Senior Amateur was known as the CGA Senior Stroke Play.

116 and Counting https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/06/17/116-and-counting/ Fri, 17 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/06/17/116-and-counting/ The CGA Match Play — the association’s oldest championship, dating back to 1901 — will have a slightly different feel this time around.

One reason is because, after being a fixture in the first half of July for all of the 21st century to this point, will begin on June 20 (Monday) this year and continue through the 36-hole final on June 24.

Secondly, the championship will be held at Lone Tree Golf Club for the first time.

Eighty-four players are scheduled to tee it up on Monday for the 18-hole stroke-play qualifier that will set the 64-man match-play bracket for the 116th Match Play.

Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course will be the No. 1 seed as the defending champion. Last year, the then-31-year-old Nosewicz became the oldest winner of the CGA Match Play since 1994.

University of Denver golfer Chris Korte, who won the 2015 CGA Stroke Play (now known as the CGA Amateur), is also entered, as are the winners of the 2015 CGA Mid-Amateur (Jon Lindstrom), the 2015 CGA Junior Stroke Play (Isaac Petersilie) and the 2016 CGA Senior Match Play (Jeff Oneth).

Connor Klein, who will be playing at his home course next week, was the 2015 CGA Match Play runner-up, falling 4 and 3 to Nosewicz in the finals. Also entered is Nathaniel Goddard, runner-up in the 2015 CGA Stroke Play and a semifinalist in last year’s Match Play.

Hard-Earned Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/26/hard-earned-title/ Thu, 26 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/26/hard-earned-title/

With all due respect to Jeff Oneth of Colorado Golf Club — who put on a nice display of golf in winning the CGA Senior Match Play, particularly down the stretch — his performance wasn’t the most impressive happening Thursday at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont.

And it also wasn’t the afternoon hailstorm that left much of the course looking like it had just been subjected to a mid-winter snowfall.

No, the most impressive site was the lightning that hit a tree (below) near the 14th green, within an hour after the senior finalists had stopped play on that hole due to dangerous conditions. Not only did the lightning strike leave a big mark on the tree, but large shreds of the torn-off bark were spread across the fairway as far as 40 yards away from the base of the tree.

Oneth and his opponent in the final of the CGA Senior Match Play, Robert West of Cherry Creek Country Club, marveled at the lightning damage when they returned to the hole, 90 minutes after exiting, to determine who would be crowned champion.

That turned out to be Oneth, who made a 6-foot birdie at the formidable 18th hole to score a 2-up victory at Fox Hill.

“I’m thrilled,” the Greenwood Village resident said. “I turned 50 in August. I played in the (2015) Senior Stroke Play at Colorado Golf Club and finished third in that, then finished second in the Senior Four-Ball (this month). This is my third CGA event and I’ve gone third, second, first.

“It’s fantastic. I just love playing the game. I played in college, then didn’t play a whole lot after that. I spent most of my time working and didn’t play in any CGA events. But when my son decided he was getting into golf — he’s playing a little college golf now — I promised him if he’d start playing in the events then I would too. I’m really enjoying it.”

Though Oneth built a 4-up lead through eight holes Thursday afternoon, West’s rally that spanned both sides of the lightning delay cut Oneth’s lead to 1 up after 15 holes. But both players missed short birdie putts on 16 — Oneth from 7 feet and West from 5 — and Oneth almost holed a pitch on 17 and also halved that hole with a par. Then Oneth clinched his first CGA championship by trickling in his 6-footer for birdie on the 448-yard closing hole.

“I thought that I had (West) for a while, but all of a sudden he played very, very, very strong. It was a great match and he’s a great competitor, but I hit a lot of good shots coming in,” said Oneth (left).

“I was kind of proud of the fact that I did battle back,” said West (below), a 58-year-old Denver resident. “I think that putt on 16 just got away from me. If I got it to even then I might have … (But) I was happy coming out of the rain delay and parring all the holes. I parred all the holes on the back. I just struggled to make birdie (he didn’t convert any in the final), which I needed to make. I just couldn’t get the putter hot for birdie. That was the difference.

“But I won four matches to get to this point, and I feel pretty good about that.”

As for Oneth, in his last three matches, he took down two former Senior Match Play winners — Ray Makloski of Pueblo Country Club in 20 holes in the quarterfinals and Fox Hills’ own Guy Mertz in 19 in Thursday morning’s semifinals, before going the distance to prevail in the finals. Mertz won the first two holes of the semifinal match, but Oneth prevailed with a 19th-hole par while Mertz couldn’t get up and down from the bunker.

“I had to beat two Fox Hills guys (Mertz and Greg Thiesen) — they were ganging up on me,” Oneth said with a smile. “It felt good. I didn’t really have any easy matches. Everybody is a big competitor. Everybody wants to win and plays hard.”

Down to the Nitty Gritty https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/25/down-to-the-nitty-gritty/ Wed, 25 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/25/down-to-the-nitty-gritty/ In a showdown of former champions, Guy Mertz of The Fox Hill Club in Longmont defeated Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club 3 and 2 on Mertz’s home course Wednesday to advance to the semifinals of the CGA Senior Match Play Championship.

Mertz, the 2010 winner of the Senior Match Play, won two of the first three holes and led throughout against Polk, a three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year.

Joining Mertz (pictured) in winning two matches on Wednesday to make the semis were Kary Kaltenbacher of Glenmoor Country Club, Robert West of Cherry Creek Country Club and Jeff Oneth of Colorado Golf Club, who beat 2012 champion Ray Makloski of Pueblo Country in 20 holes in the quarterfinals. Oneth prevailed with a bogey on the 20th hole, where Makloski carded a double bogey. Makloski had been 3 up through 13 holes.

In Thursday’s semis, Kaltenbacher will face West and Mertz will take on Oneth. The winners will meet for the title on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, in the CGA Super-Senior Match Play at West Woods Golf Club in Arvada, Steve Scheffel of Ptarmigan Country Club and Jeffrey English of CommonGround Golf Course won two matches each on Wednesday and will meet in Thursday morning’s championship match. Each player has defeated a two-time Super-Senior Match Play champ along the way, English taking down Roger Gunderson of CommonGround in Tuesday’s round of 16, and Scheffel dominating Patrick Mooney of Colorado Golf Club in Wednesday’s quarterfinals, 8 and 7.

In Wednesday afternoon’s semifinals, Scheffel edged Don Alley of Antler Creek Golf Course, 1 up, as the players halved the last five holes with pars. And English topped Doug Jones of Tiara Rado Golf Course, 2 and 1.

Fowler Back in the Winner’s Circle https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/10/01/fowler-back-in-the-winners-circle/ Thu, 01 Oct 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/10/01/fowler-back-in-the-winners-circle/

Back in the mid-1980s, Bill Fowler received a rough initiation to the highest level of amateur competition in Colorado. Brandt Jobe was a contemporary of his, and given that Jobe has gone on to a PGA Tour career in which he’s won more than $9 million, that’s pretty stout company.

In 1985, Fowler finished second and third, respectively, in the CGA Match Play and Stroke Play — behind Jobe on each occasion. In that year’s 36-hole Match Play final, Fowler ran into the buzzsaw that was Jobe, who won 12 and 11. Fowler remembers Jobe being 13 under par for the 25 holes that they played.

Coincidentally, a CGA banner featuring a likeness of Jobe was flying next to the 18th green Thursday at Colorado Golf Club in Parker. Only this time, that was where Fowler was winning another CGA championship of his own, the Senior Stroke Play.

Fowler (left and above), a former CGA president who plays out of the Club at Rolling Hills, made the Senior Stroke Play his third CGA championship title, coming 26 years after his first (the 1989 Mid-Amateur) and 10 after his second (the 2005 Western Chapter).

“It means a lot to me,” the 52-year-old said of Thursday’s victory. “I won the Mid-Am in 1989. That was a long time ago. It’s hard to stay competitive for a long time, as you know, but I’ve tried. I love to play in competition because that tells you how good you are.”

Fowler broke a tie and pulled away in the middle of the back nine Thursday, then held on for a two-stroke victory.

He shot a 6-over-par 78 in the final round at Colorado Golf Club, which proved one of the most difficult venues ever to host the Senior Stroke Play. Indeed, Fowler’s winning total of 8-over-par 224 was the highest at the Senior Stroke Play since Larry Eaton claimed the title with a 226 total in 1991 at Gleneagle Golf Club.

The fact that the course played so hard this week suited Fowler just fine. Not coincidentally, he also qualified for the 2015 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball — with Robert Polk — at Colorado Golf Club.

“I play very hard golf courses very well,” Fowler said. “I tend to focus more when the course is difficult. I do like hard golf courses.”

“I’ve played this golf course a lot and I feel very comfortable here. I love the course; it suits my eye. I’ve played very well here over the years.”

Another thing that played into Fowler’s hands were the very challenging green complexes at Colorado Golf Club, which has hosted the 2013 Solheim Cup and the 2010 Senior PGA Championship. In some respects, his home club of Rolling Hills trained him very well for the situation. Interestingly, Fowler will be defending his Senior Stroke Play title next year at Rolling Hills.

“You have to visualize things here (at Colorado Golf Club) that you probably don’t at other clubs,” he said. “Playing at Rolling Hills my whole life, that has given me a way to see things that other people don’t see. So I love the greens (at Colorado Golf Club) and can read them generally.”

Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore (left, and above with Fowler) of Cherry Hills Country Club placed second at 226 after closing with a 75 on Thursday. Moore has finished second, first and second in the last three CGA Senior Stroke Plays.

Jeff Oneth (below) , playing his home course, came in third at 228 after a final-round 76. Robin Bradbury (bottom) of Heritage at Westmoor, the leader after the first two rounds, struggled to an 88 on Thursday, which left him at 233. That fourth-place showing gave him top-four finishes at both the CGA Senior Match Play and Senior Stroke Play in 2015. David Delich of The Broadmoor Golf Club, winner of this year’s CGA Senior Match Play, came in fifth at 234.

Moore, who was 1 under par for the day through 12 holes, shared the lead at that point with Fowler. But his approach shot on No. 13 landed in a bunker right of the green, which left him with a brutally fast downhill shot to the pin, and his ball trickled into the bunker below the hole. Eventually, he posted a double bogey, while Fowler parred to gain a two-stroke lead.

“I hit the bunker shot as good as I could hit it and didn’t even think (his ball going into the opposite bunker) could happen,” Moore said. “I couldn’t hit it much softer and it still went in.”

Fowler birdied the next two holes — from 12 and 4 feet, respectively — accounting for a five-stroke swing in three-hole stretch. From there, even a bogey-bogey-double bogey finish left him with a little cushion to spare. On No. 18, a second shot that finished left of the bushes bordering the green complex resulted in an unplayable lie, but a good recovery shot kept things from getting real interesting on the final hole.

As for Moore, he pointed to the sometimes-confounding par-5 16th as his downfall. There, he went 4 over par in three days — bogey, double bogey, bogey — while going into the water twice.

“I should have played another practice round,” said Moore, fresh off the U.S. Senior Amateur in New Jersey. “I made 6-7-6 on No. 16 and I played it three different ways — and I really only hit one bad shot. (After today’s bogey it was like) ‘I just cannot play this hole.’

“I lost it not thinking well enough and not knowing the course. It was my mistake.”

But Moore was quick to credit Fowler’s solid play on a very demanding layout.

“Bill played great,” he said. “He hit nothing but solid shots until the last one, which really didn’t matter. He really played well.”

Fowler, a member — or the son of members — at Rolling Hills since age 12, has been competing in CGA (or CJGA) tournaments for the last 40 years. He estimates he’s played in between 50 and 80 all told, which makes victories like Thursday’s all the more sweet.

“Even when I had little kids, that was my hall pass to go play a CGA championship,” he said.
