Jim Knous of Littleton and Tom Whitney of Fort Collins, both of whom competed in a PGA Tour event last weekend, fell short of returning to the Final Stage of Web.com Q-school.

Despite failing to advance out of Second Stage tournaments, Knous and Whitney still will have some status on the 2018 Web circuit by virtue of finishing between 76-100 on the 2017 money list, but that’s relatively low on the tournament eligibility categories.

Knous had been inside the top 20 and ties at a Second Stage tournament in Plantation, Fla. — which was what was needed to advance to the Final Stage — after each of the first three rounds. But a 1-over-par 72 on Friday dropped him to 28th place at 5-under-par 279, which was two shy of what was necessary to advance. Knous played his final eight holes in 3 over par.

Also in 28th place in Plantation was A.J. Morris of Aspen, who shot 67-69-69 the last three rounds but was done in by a first-round 74.

Meanwhile, Whitney played in Stage 2 in McKinney, Texas, where the top 20 and ties landed spots in the Final Stage. The former Air Force Academy golfer gave himself a chance to advance with a third-round 65, but a 2-over-par 74 on Friday dropped him to a 47th-place finish at 1-over-par 289.

Last week, Wyndham Clark of Highlands Ranch punched his ticket to the Final Stage by winning a Second Stage tournament in Murrieta, Calif.

The Final Stage of Web qualifying is scheduled for Dec. 7-10 in Chandler, Ariz. There, all the finishers will be guaranteed some Web.com Tour status in 2018, but the top 45 and ties there will earn exempt status of varying degrees, while the rest will have conditional status.

Here are the scores for all the Coloradans who competed this week:

McKinney, Texas (Top 20 Finishers and Ties Advance to Final Stage)
FAILED TO ADVANCE TO FINAL STAGE

47. Tom Whitney, Fort Collins 74-76-65-74–289

Plantation, Fla. (Top 20 Finishers and Ties Advance to Final Stage)
FAILED TO ADVANCE TO FINAL STAGE

28. Jim Knous, Littleton 67-70-70-72–279
28. A.J. Morris, Aspen 74-67-69-69–279
55. Former CU golfer Justin Bardgett 71-74-73-68–286

Finishing With a Flurry https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/11/09/finishing-with-a-flurry-2/ Thu, 09 Nov 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/11/09/finishing-with-a-flurry-2/ Though he’s broken par in all three rounds, Jim Knous of Littleton finds himself on the bubble in his bid to return to the Final Stage of Web.com Tour Q-school.

With the top 20 finishers and ties after Friday’s last round advancing to the Final Stage, Knous shares 19th place through Thursday’s third round of a Second Stage tournament in Plantation, Fla.

Fresh off making a cut in a PGA Tour event for the first time, Knous stands at 6-under-par 207 through 54 holes after a 1-under 70 on Thursday.

The former Colorado School of Mines golfer, who finished 94th on the season-long Web.com Tour money list in 2017, had a wild back nine on Thursday in which he didn’t make a par. After going birdie-bogey-double bogey-bogey on holes 10-13, Knous birdied his last five to shoot the 70. He trails co-leaders Rick Cochran of Paducah, Ky., and Steven Ihm of Peosta, Iowa, by six strokes.

A.J. Morris of Aspen also is in the running to advance to the Final Stage. After following up a first-round 74 with scores of 67-69 he shares 32nd place at 3-under-par 210.

At another Second Stage tournament in McKinney, Texas, Tom Whitney of Fort Collins shot himself back into the running for a Final Stage position with a bogey-free 7-under-par 65 on Thursday. Following rounds of 74-76 on Tuesday and Wednesday, the former Air Force Academy golfer stands in 31st place at 1-under 215. The top 20 finishers and ties on Friday will advance to the Final Stage, and Whitney is now four strokes out of the 20th spot.

The former Colorado School of Mines golfer shot a 1-under-par 70 on Wednesday in a Second Stage tournament in Plantation, Fla., leaving him tied for 13th place with two rounds remaining.

Knous (left) birdied three straight holes — his seventh through ninth of the day — to go along with two bogeys on Wednesday. He trails leader Steve Ihm of Peosta, Iowa by three strokes.

Knous was a regular on the Web.com Tour in 2017 and placed 94th on the season-long money list.

The top 20 finishers and ties after Friday’s fourth round advance to the Final Stage of Web qualifying, set for Dec. 7-10 in Chandler, Ariz. In Arizona, all the finishers will be guaranteed some Web.com Tour status in 2018, but the top 45 and ties there will earn exempt status of varying degrees, while the rest will have conditional status.

The former Colorado School of Mines golfer (pictured) made six birdies and two bogeys in round 1 and trails leader Ben Polland of Jacksonville, Fla., by three strokes.

Knous was a regular on the Web.com Tour in 2017 and placed 94th on the season-long money list.

The top 20 finishers and ties after Friday’s fourth round advance to the Final Stage of Web qualifying, set for Dec. 7-10 in Chandler, Ariz. Steppingstone https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/10/07/steppingstone/ Fri, 07 Oct 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/10/07/steppingstone/ It’s been a big week for local golfers in Web.com Q-school, and it could get even bigger.

On Friday, seven players with significant Colorado connections finished well enough in Web.com first-stage tournaments to earn spots into the second stage of the three-stage process.

Advancing from a tournament in Nebraska City by placing in the top 25 and ties were several current or former University of Colorado golfers, plus former Colorado State Ram Parker Edens. CU senior Jeremy Paul finished fourth at 10-under-par 278. As for the ex-Buffs, Justin Bardgett was fifth (279), David Oraee was ninth (280) and Josh Creel was 16th (282). (Creel finished his college career at Central Oklahoma after starting at CU).

Also in 16th place at 282 was Edens. And completing the local contingent who advanced was Miller Capps of Denver (283, 25th place).

Also advancing to stage 2, from a first-stage tournament in Maricopa, Ariz., was Nick Hodge of Littleton. Hodge made two eagles in three holes — one on a par-4 and one-on a par-5 — to go along with three birdies and three bogeys in a 4-under-par 68 in Friday’s final round. With a 10-under 278 total, he finished in 15th place.

Meanwhile, in Lantana, Texas, where Coloradans Jim Knous, Zahkai Brown and Derek Tolan are all in the top 25 through 54 holes, the final round was postponed until Saturday because the course was deemed unplayable on Friday.

Coloradans Gunner Wiebe and Nick Mason advanced to the second stage of Q-school at first-stage tournaments last week.

Five more first-stage tourneys will be held next week.

Here are the results of players with strong Colorado connections at Q-school tournaments that started on Tuesday:

Paul (left) shot a 4-under-par 68 on Wednesday, leaving him at 9-under 135 with two rounds left. After Friday’s final round, the top 25 finishers and ties will advance to the second stage of a three-stage qualifying process.

Paul, who has made 13 birdies through two rounds, shares the top spot in Nebraska City with T.J. Mitchell of St. Simons Island, Ga.

Also in the top 25 at the site after two rounds are three former CU golfers: Justin Bardgett (67-70–137, sixth place), David Oraee of Greeley (69-69–138, 11th place) and Josh Creel (66-72–138, 11th place).

Meanwhile, at another first-stage tournament, in Lantana, Texas, Jim Knous of Englewood and Zahkai Brown of Arvada are on pace to advance in qualifying.

Knous holds seventh place after rounds of 67-69 left him at 8-under-par 136. Brown, meanwhile, shares 14th place at 139 after going 70-69.

And in Maricopa, Ariz., Nick Hodge of Littleton (72-69–141) shares 23rd place.

Close Call https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/01/29/close-call/ Fri, 29 Jan 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/01/29/close-call/ Two-time CoBank Colorado Open champion Derek Tolan earned PGA Tour Latinoamerica status for 2016 on Friday by the narrowest of margins.

With the top 25 finishers and ties at a qualifying tournament in Bogota, Colombia landing spots on the Latinoamerica Tour this year, Tolan (left) tied for 23rd place. One shot higher and he would have missed out.

The Highlands Ranch resident double bogeyed his final hole and shot a 4-over-par 40 on the back nine Friday. But it was good enough for him to gain conditional status in 2016. Tolan went 74-71-73-76 on a formidable course to check in at 10-over-par 294.

The medalist — American Seth Fair — earned a full exemption for the entire season, while the next 10 finishers will be exempt for the first half of the year. The remaining 14 players and ties earned conditional status.

Tolan joins fellow former University of Colorado golfer Justin Bardgett and Fort Collins’ Tom Whitney in successfully negotiating one of the four Latinoamerica Q-school tournaments. Tolan and Bardgett have conditional status.

Tolan was also conditional on PGA Tour Latinoamerica in 2015, playing in eight events and finishing 71st on the money list with $13,440.

Elsewhere this week, three Coloradans — Jim Knous of Englewood, Parker Edens of Greeley and Cameron Harrell of Colorado Springs tied for ninth place in an OnCore Gateway Tour event in Gilbert, Ariz.

With 2-under-par 211 totals, they finished 15 strokes behind champion Jake Younan and won $1,400 each.
