The players from Eisenhower Golf Club at the Air Force Academy, who had never competed together as a two-person team, rallied from a four-stroke deficit going into Sunday’s final round to win the 12th annual CGA Women’s Dunham Chapman Championship at the River Course at Keystone.
“It’s amazing,” Young said. “I’ve won a few smaller things, but not a state event. … I’m ready to pass out.”
Added Lyle: “It’s surprising really, but it feels great. I think we were both very surprised to win.
“I haven’t played in tournaments with Sandra before, but we’re on the same golf team for our club. This was the first one that I said, ‘Hey, do you want to play?’ We weren’t even sure we could play together. It worked out pretty well.”
In fact, Lyle and Young had overtaken first-round leaders Denise Cohen of Kissing Camels and Ron Irons of Eisenhower after just nine holes on Sunday, though the title hung in the balance until the end.
Lyle and Young finished with a 4-over-par 75 in round 2 in the Chapman stroke play format in which each golfer hits a tee shot, then plays her partner’s ball for the second shot. After that, a scoring ball is chosen, and that ball is played alternately into the hole. (The champions are pictured, with Young at left and Lyle at right, flanking Marty Hall, partner of tournament namesake Jo Ann Dunham.)
They finished with a two-day total of 11-over-par 153, one stroke better than Cohen and Irons, whose downfall was a triple bogey on the 16th hole en route to an 80 on Sunday.
Ending up third was Colorado Golf Hall of Famer and two-time Dunham Chapman champion Christie Austin of Cherry Hills and partner Kathy West of Castle Pines, who checked in at 157.
Cohen and Irons had regained the lead on the back nine Sunday, but a 40-foot birdie by Lyle on the par-3 15th evened things up. “That made a big difference. It was pivotal,” Young said of Lyle’s long birdie. And the two went up for good on No. 16 when they made bogey and Cohen and Irons their triple.
“I had never played this event before, but we thought we might be a good fit,” said Young, 58. “(Lyle) hits a very long ball and the short game is my area. It’s great when your partner can put you 100 yards out so maybe I can score. It was a good combination.”
Lyle, a 52-year-old who retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after 20 years in the Air Force, credits Young for draining not-so-simple par putts throughout the round that kept their rally going.
“I’ve played in a few (CGA/CWGA championships), but normally I don’t do very well,” Lyle said. “I play much better with a partner who can keep my head in the game. Sandy did a great job of doing that because I’m a little bit crazy.
“This is my first state-level (title) in my life. This was basically my last golfing of the season and so it’s a pretty good way to go out.”
Lyle has been competing seriously in golf for just the last few years, and Young didn’t take up the game at all until she was 38.
“I had thought golf was a stupid sport,” Young said. “One of my husband’s friends wanted his wife to take lessons, so just to get her to quit bugging me, I said, ‘OK, I’ll take lessons with you.’ I fell in love immediately.”
She’s gone on to win a worldwide tournament for military spouses and dependents in 2010, and she’s qualified for at least four USGA championships — a Women’s Publinks, Mid-Am and a couple of Senior Ams.
The championship flight was one of eight flights of competition at the Dunham Chapman. Among the other winners on Sunday was CGA co-president Juliet Miner of Bear Dance, who teamed with Peggy Puckett of Wellshire to prevail in the second flight.
The Dunham Chapman was renamed prior to the 2017 championship as a tribute to Jo Ann Dunham, a longtime CWGA volunteer whose brainchild was the Chapman, which was first contested in 2007. Dunham passed away on Sept. 28, 2016, just shy of her 77th birthday.

Sixty-four two-person teams are entered in the 12th annual event, with competition in eight different flights.
Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club and Laurie Steenrod of Saddle Rock Golf Course won the title in this event twice together (2013 and ’15), and while they’re both entered this weekend, it’s with different partners.
Austin will compete with Kathy West of Castle Pines Golf Club, and Steenrod with Bev Hoffenberg of Columbine Country Club. Also in the seven-team championship flight are Mary Doyen of Foothills Golf Course — winner of the 2011 CGA Women’s Senior Stroke Play and the 2012 senior division of the CGA Women’s Match Play — and partner Jill Kirkpatrick of Broken Tee Englewood.
The Chapman Stroke Play format calls for two-person teams, with each golfer hitting tee shots, then playing her partner’s ball for the second shot. After that, a scoring ball is chosen, and that ball is played alternately into the hole.
The Lakewood resident served on the CWGA’s volunteer board of directors from 2004 through ’09, chairing the tournament committee during that period and serving on that same committee for years before joining the board. Besides the Chapman, she was instrumental in the creation of the CWGA Niblick Tournament, another team event.

]]>Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kim Eaton, a four-time quarterfinalist in the national Senior Women’s Am, earned medalist honors in qualifying in Scottsdale, Ariz., by shooting a 72 on Tuesday. And Kathy West of Castle Pines Golf Club also landed a spot at that site, posting a 79.
The Country Club of Colorado in Colorado Springs will host the Colorado-based qualifier for the event on Monday after the tournament was moved from the nearby Broadmoor because of hail damage. In Colorado Springs, 29 golfers will be vying for the seven spots in the U.S. Senior Women’s Am, which is set for Oct. 6-11 at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club in Vero Beach, Fla. That will mark the final USGA championship of 2018.
Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore of Centennial, who has qualfiied for every U.S. Senior Women’s Am for which she’s been eligible, will be in the field at the Country Club of Colorado. This year, she’s already competed in the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open, and she’s also qualified for the upcoming U.S. Women’s Mid-Am, which will be her 27th USGA championship.
Also scheduled to play on Monday are fellow 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s Am competitors Kristine Franklin of Broomfield, Susan Hartwell of Arvada, Marilyn Hardy of Gunnison, Kathy Malpass of Evergreen, Sandra Bickel of La Porte and Lisa Lee of Longmont.
Hartwell, Eaton and Franklin made match play at last year’s national championship, with Eaton and Hartwell advancing to the round of 32. So far in 2018, Franklin has won the CGA Women’s Senior Stroke Play and fellow Monday competitor Tiffany Maurycy of Denver claimed the title in the CGA Women’s Senior Match Play.

]]>The college golfers — Benson plays for Creighton and More for Colorado Mesa — shot a better-ball score of 7-under-par 65 on Monday, while Eaton and Moore carded a 72 at The Club at Flying Horse in Colorado Springs.
That gives Benson and More a seven-stroke lead in the championship flight going into Tuesday’s final round of the four-ball stroke-play event. They made eight better-ball birdies and one bogey on Monday and posted a 6-under-par 30 on the back nine.
Eaton, who now lives in Arizona, and Moore, from Cherry Hills Country Club, own 44 CGA women’s championship titles between them, including 10 Brassies, though they haven’t won the Brassie together.
On Monday, the Hall of Famers recorded two birdies and two bogeys in their even-par round.
Kathy West of Castle Pines, who won last year’s Brassie title with Christie Austin, and new partner Sue O’Connor of Wellshire Golf Course sit in third place at 75.
Sixty-four teams are competing in seven flights at the Women’s Brassie in gross and net divisions. Eight of those are in championship flight.
The Brassie is the first CGA women’s championship of 2018.
For scores from the Brassie, CLICK HERE.
The CGA Women’s Brassie Championship is set for Monday and Tuesday (May 21-22) at The Club at Flying Horse, the Tom Weiskopf-designed course (pictured in a club photo) in Colorado Springs.
The four-ball stroke play event features 64 two-person teams in seven flights — championship through sixth.
The championship flight includes one team with two Colorado Golf Hall of Famers: Kim Eaton and Janet Moore. Between them, they have won 10 Brassie titles, though never together. Eaton captured six between 1994 and 2011, while Moore earned four between 1994 and 2015. (There were two Brassie tournaments held in 1994, with Eaton and Nina Whalen winning one and Moore and Christie Austin the other.)
Eaton, an eight-time CWGA Senior Player of the Year and four-time U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur quarterfinalist, owns 24 CWGA/CGA women’s championships in her career. That leaves her one shy of the record, set by another Colorado Golf Hall of Famer, Carol Flenniken. So if Eaton and Moore should prevail next week, Eaton would pull even with Flenniken. And Moore isn’t far behind, with 20 CGA/CWGA women’s titles.
Among the other championship flight competitors next week is Kathy West, who won the 2017 Brassie title with Austin, who isn’t entered this year. This year West is teaming with Sue O’Connor. And there are two Brassie players who have won both the CWGA/CGA Women’s Senior Stroke Play and Senior Match Play: Mary Doyen and Deb Hughes. At the Brassie, Doyen will pair up with Nina Dulacki and Hughes with Bev Hoffenberg.

Kim Eaton now has an even handful of titles when it comes to the CWGA Senior Stroke Play.
The Colorado Golf Hall of Famer dominated the 35th playing of the tournament this week at Mariana Butte Golf Course in Loveland, winning the event for the fifth time “” but the first since 2013.
On Tuesday, the margin of victory was 13 shots, giving her three wins by double digits in the tournament. She prevailed by 16 shots in 2012 and by 10 in 2013.
Tuesday’s victory gave the Mesa, Ariz., resident her third season sweep of the CWGA Senior Stroke Play and Senior Match Play. She also managed to pull off that feat in 2010 and ’13.
“It’s a big deal to win both (in the same year),” said the 58-year-old (pictured). “There’s some good players here and when you can win both, that kind of tells you really who the best senior is in Colorado.”
Overall, Tuesday’s CWGA title was the 24th of Eaton’s career, leaving her just one shy of Carol Flenniken’s record of 25.
“It means I’m a step closer,” said Eaton, who tentatively plans to compete in the Senior Match Play, Senior Stroke Play and Brassie in Colorado in 2018. “It means next year I could do it.”
Eaton followed up her 5-under-par 67 on Monday with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday, leaving her with a 2-under 142 total. The four-time U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur quarterfinalist made three birdies on Tuesday, including an impressive one from 8 feet on the final hole after hitting her approach with her feet in a fairway bunker and her ball in the rough. “That was probably the longest putt I made all week,” said Eaton, whose one major blemish of the final round was a triple-bogey 8 on the fifth hole. (Eaton is pictured at top receiving a high-five from playing partner Tiffany Maurycy on No. 18 on Tuesday.)
“I started out birdie-par-birdie and thought, “˜Maybe I can do as good as I did yesterday,'” said Eaton, a former police officer who won two gold medals and two silvers in golf last week in the World Police and Fire Games in Los Angeles. “But that 8 kind of derailed me.”
Kathy West of Castle Pines, who recently won the CWGA Brassie title with Christie Austin, finished runner-up on Tuesday in just her second CWGA championship. West carded the best score of the final round, a 74, to check in at 11-over-par 155.
It was a welcome result for West, who has undergone a fusion of vertebrae in her neck and two shoulder surgeries in recent years, and endured a very rough airplane landing in 2016 that set back her recovery.
“I’m really thankful that I’m even able to play golf,” said West, who splits her time between Tulsa, Okla., Castle Pines and Scottsdale, Ariz. “I’m not sure I was going to be able to play (following the surgeries). Today I had it going. It was so much fun. This was probably was one of the best (ball)-striking rounds I’ve had since I had my surgeries. And it was in a tournament, which makes it better.
“It was a really good tournament for me. (The airplane situation) screwed up my neck again and so I had to start all over again getting healthy. This is only the second individual event for me since over a year ago. That’s one reason I’m kind of proud of (the result).”
Mary Doyen of Denver, the 2011 champion, came in third at 156 after a closing 76. (Pictured, from left, are Doyen, Eaton and West.) And two-time winner and Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Lynn Zmistowski of Boulder was fourth at 157 after an 80 on Tuesday.
Maurycy, who had been in second place after Monday, self-reported signing an incorrect scorecard in the first round and was disqualified.
The gross score champions in the other flights were: Linda Raunig (First Flight, 74 82″“156); Patricia Sato (Second Flight, 83-79″“162); Peggy Puckett (Third Flight, 86-80″“166); Claudia Gallegos (Fourth Flight, 85 87″“172); Ann Scarry (Fifth Flight, 91-85″“176); Insook Bhushan (Sixth Flight, 87-97″“184); and Lucille Carroll (Seventh Flight, 93-96″“189).
The net flight winners were Doyen (Championship Flight, 73-69″“142); Linda Raunig (First Flight, 64-72″“136); Donna Edelen (Second Flight, 69-69″“138); Peggy Puckett (Third Flight, 70-64″“134); Claudia Gallegos (Fourth Flight, 68-70″“138); Ann Scarry (Fifth Flight, 70-64″“134); Insook Bhushan (Sixth Flight, 64-74″“138); Lucille Carroll (Seventh Flight, 64-67″“131).

]]>Just ask Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club, owner of the 18 victories, or teammate Kathy West of Castle Pines Golf Club, who earned her first CWGA championship on Sunday.
The two paired up at Rifle Creek Golf Course for an eight-stroke win in the Brassie Championship, a best-ball stroke-play event. It was Austin’s sixth Brassie title, with West being her fourth partner in victory, following Liz Ivancie (1990), Janet Moore (1994, 2001 and 2010) and Tori Glenn (2014). (The 2017 champions are pictured, with Austin at left.)
“It’s always such a fun format,” said Austin, who was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 2015. “I’ve enjoyed four-ball, both stroke and match, for close to 30 years playing in these events. I love playing partner events.”
Indeed, of Austin’s 18 CWGA titles, 15 have come in two-person team events: six each in the Brassie and Mashie, two in the Chapman and one in a Mixed event. (Individually, Austin has been victorious twice in the CWGA Senior Stroke Play and once in the Senior Match Play.)
In this case, Austin met West in Scottsdale, Ariz., at a club where both are members. And since West and her husband, who are primarily Tulsa residents, are spending more time in Castle Pines these days, Austin and West joined forces for the Brassie.
“This is my first time to play in a CWGA championship,” West said. “It’s a really friendly group of people here, and that’s part of the fun of it.”
Another part was West making a hole-in-one during Saturday’s first round “” with a gap wedge on the 112-yard 15th hole. It was the third ace of West’s life, and second in competition.
“But it’s been a long time, so that felt like the first one actually,” she noted.
After Saturday’s 1-under-par 71 “” which included a two-stroke penalty for hitting from the wrong tee box on No. 13 “” Sunday’s final round was less eventful. Their even-par 72 in round 2 left them at 1-under 143 overall. They made three birdies and three bogeys in the second round.
“We hung in there today,” Austin said. “We had a few holes where one or the other of us wasn’t in the hole. And each of us had a couple of times where we did some really great things.
“What (fellow competitor) Kathy Malpass told us was, “˜You guys really paired well this week.’ She was right. When one of us hit it out of play, the other one hit it right down the middle. We managed our risk well. We made a couple of silly bogeys today, but all in all I’m really pleased with the way we paired as a team. It was very comfortable. We laughed and we joked. We kept it very light and easy, and we came out a winner.”
Malpass, from Hiwan Golf Club, and partner Katherine Moore-Lilly from Cordillera finished second in the championship flight at 151 after closing with a 77. Lynn Larson and Laurie Steenrod, who have twice won the Brassie as teammates, shared third place at 160 with Lynne Batchelder and Nancy Ziereis, who shot a second-round 81.
The gross-division winners of the other flights were Donna Edelen and Becky Finger (170 in first flight), Karla Hutchinson and Kathleen Mikoloyck (175 in second flight), and Sue Means and Nondis Lowther from Rifle Creek (172 in third flight).
With the exception of the first flight, the same teams won the net division titles. Penny Sykes and Candy Hammerich prevailed in the net competition in the first flight.

]]>With West’s hole-in-one at the 112-yard 15th hole, she and Austin combined to shoot a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday and take a three-stroke lead at the midway point at Rifle Creek Golf Course in Rifle.
Ironically, West’s ace came two holes after she, and then Austin, hit from the wrong tee on the par-5 13th, where a two-stroke penalty left them with a double-bogey 7.
“(West’s) comment after the ball drifted into the hole (on 15 was) ‘I redeemed myself,'” Austin noted in a text. “It was hysterical and great, all at once.”
Austin and West carded an eagle, three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on Saturday in the best-ball stroke-play event.
Their closest pursuers in the championship flight going into Sunday’s final round are Kathy Malpass and Katherine Moore-Lilly, whose 74 included three birdies.
Sitting in third place are Lynn Larson and Laurie Steenrod, who won the Brassie in 2000 and ’08. They posted a 77 on Saturday.
The gross-score leaders in the other flights after round 1 are Judy Maillis and Lyn Bullen (80 in first flight), Karla Hutchinson and Kathleen Mikoloyck (87 in second flight), and Nondis Lowther and Sue Means (84 in third flight).
The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
