Mark Hubbard – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf Tue, 24 May 2022 17:55:27 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/cga-favicon-150x150.png Mark Hubbard – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf 32 32 Tour Roundup https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/08/19/tour-roundup-3/ Sun, 19 Aug 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/08/19/tour-roundup-3/ Guys who grew up in Colorado earning PGA Tour cards isn’t an everyday occurrence.

It isn’t even an every-year occurrence.

It’s fair to say it happens rarely, especially since Q-school is no longer is a direct route to the PGA Tour.

Prior to this year, the last Colorado golfer to land a PGA Tour card for the first time was Denver native Mark Hubbard, who made the grade in 2014 and played on the world’s top tour for three seasons before losing his card.

But on Sunday, another Denver native formally joined the elite group. Wyndham Clark, who grew up south of the Denver metro area and graduated from Valor Christian High School, landed his PGA Tour card by finishing in the top 25 on the Web.com Tour’s regular-season money list in 2018.

Clark — winner of the 2010 CGA Amateur and the 2017 Pac-12 individual title, both at Boulder Country Club — certainly didn’t finish the Web.com Tour season the way he wanted as he missed cuts in four of his last five events, including this weekend’s WinCo Foods Portland Open.

But the 24-year-old did the necessary work in the first six months (and one day) of the year. In his first 15 Web events of the season, Clark recorded four top-five finishes with a second, a third, a fourth and a fifth. With $187,817 for the year, he finished 16th on the Web’s regular-season money list.

“It was a tough week but an awesome year and I’m so happy to be getting my card,” Clark said to ColoradoGolf.org via text this weekend.

Clark, the 2017 Pac-12 Player of the Year at Oregon and the 2014 Big 12 Player of the Year at Oklahoma State before transferring, turned pro just 14 months ago. In addition to his Web.com Tour starts, he’s played in eight PGA Tour events in 2017 and early ’18, making two cuts and finishing as high as 17th.

“I knew and believed I could do it (earn a PGA Tour card) in one short season,” Clark texted. “I just had to stay focused and play my game and let the results take care of themselves — and they did. It’s an awesome feeling and I can’t wait to be on the Tour.”

But Clark’s Web.com Tour season isn’t quite over — just his regular season. The Web.com Tour Finals begin on Thursday in Columbus, Ohio, and Clark is in the field there. He’ll try to improve his 2018-19 PGA Tour status with his performances throughout the four-event Finals, which culminate with the Web.com Tour Championship Sept. 20-23 in Atlantic Beach, Fla.

The 2018-19 wraparound season for the PGA Tour begins with the Safeway Open in Napa, Calif., Oct. 4-7.

Joining Clark in the Web.com Tour Finals — thanks to finishing in the top 75 on the regular-season money list — will be Jim Knous of Littleton and Hubbard. That will also guarantee Knous and Hubbard full Web.com Tour status in 2019 if they don’t get PGA Tour cards through the Web Finals.

Knous, a former Colorado School of Mines golfer, finished a Web-career-best-tying fourth on Sunday at the Portland Open and 52nd on the Web regular-season money list. He shot rounds of 70-67-68-67 for a 12-under-par 272 total, which left him six strokes behind winner Sunjae Im.

It was Knous second top-four finish on the Web.com Tour since July 1.

Meanwhile, Hubbard placed 40th on Sunday in Portland, leaving him in the 72nd position on the final Web regular-season money list. Hubbard went 66-70-70-73 for a 5-under 279 total.

A local player who like Clark missed the cut at the Portland Open was at the center of an unfortunate incident during Friday’s round. ESPN reported that part-time Denver resident Kevin Stadler accidentally injured a fan when he slammed an iron on the ground and against his foot and the head came loose and hit a spectator in the head. ESPN indicated that Web.com Tour rules official Orlando Pope said the fan required six stitches, being treated on site then at a hospital before being released.

“It was a very freakish accident,” Pope told ESPN. “Kevin is devastated. He had trouble trying to finish the round. He was quite worried and felt so bad.”

Saunders, Laird Advance to PGA Tour Playoffs: A year after narrowly missing qualifying for the PGA Tour’s FedExCup Playoffs, former Fort Collins resident Sam Saunders made the “postseason” for the first time on Sunday.

Saunders, a grandson of Arnold Palmer. finished 45th at the regular-season-ending Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., which left him at 120th in the FedExCup standings. The top 125 are fully exempt on the PGA Tour next season and advance to the playoffs.

Also tying for 45th place at the Wyndham and making the playoffs was former Colorado State University golfer Martin Laird. He’s 113th in the FedExCup standings.

The opening playoff event is The Northern Trust in Paramus, N.J., starting Thursday. The top 100 in the FedExCup standings after that will advance to the Dell Technologies Championship.

Notable on Tour This Week: Three players with strong Colorado connections finished in the top 11 Sunday in the PGA Tour Canada’s Players Cup in Winnipeg. James Love of Denver tied for fifth, while fellow Coloradan Michael Schoolcraft and former Louisville resident George Cunningham shared 11th place. For Love, it was his best PGA Tour Canada showing in more than two years. He went 66-67-70-69 for a 16-under-par 272 total, which left him six behind champion Tyler McCumber. Schoolcraft, with his second top-11 showing of the month, and Cunningham checked in at 274. … Former University of Colorado golfer Steve Jones, who has been sidelined by knee surgery, according to the USGA, played in his first PGA Tour Champions event since mid-April, finishing 70th at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open (68-80-76). Jones is best known for winning the 1996 U.S. Open.

That Time of Year https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/08/06/that-time-of-year/ Mon, 06 Aug 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/08/06/that-time-of-year/

It’s gut-check time for players on the bubble on many of the world’s top golf tours.

That comes with the territory this time of year as tours wind down their season schedules. And plenty of those doing some figurative nail-biting are golfers with strong Colorado connections.

Some of those players are looking to get “promotions” to higher-profile tours next season. Others are mainly aiming to keep similar tour cards for next year, given their current situation.

We’ll take a look at some of the local players on the bubble, but first we’ll mention one who is virtually guaranteed to earn a promotion. That would be Wyndham Clark, a Denver native and former Highlands Ranch resident, who, barring some wild happenings in the final two tournaments of the Web.com Tour season should secure a PGA Tour card for the 2018-19 wraparound season.

“It’s pretty awesome, a dream come true,” the current Las Vegas resident recently told the Portland Tribune. “I’ve always wanted to be on the PGA Tour. It is amazing it has only taken one year (playing as a pro) to do it. It’s surreal.”

Clark (pictured), the 2010 CGA Amateur champion, hasn’t played his best golf in the last month, but his strong play in the first six months of the season has put him in 13th place on the 2018 regular-season Web money list with $187,817. The top 25 at the end of the regular season — on Aug. 19 — will earn PGA Tour cards.

Clark, the 2017 Pac-12 Conference individual champion, has posted four top-five finishes this Web.com season, with a best showing of second place at the United Leasing & Finance Championship in April. He’s a Web.com rookie in 2018.

Clark is no stranger to PGA Tour events, having competed in eight of them since June 2017, many via sponsor exemptions. His best PGA Tour finish was 17th place at the Sanderson Farms Championship in October 2017. All told, he’s made two cuts in those eight PGA Tour starts.

Speaking of the PGA Tour, the top 125 finishers in the FedExCup point standings after the PGA Championship (Thursday through Sunday) and the Wyndham Championship (Aug. 16-19) will keep their fully-exempt status for next season. And two “local” players who are not in the PGA Championship field are currently sitting in the 110-125 range.

Former Colorado State University golfer Martin Laird is 113th in the standings and former Fort Collins resident Sam Saunders is 120th. Should either fall out of the top 125 — and if they didn’t place highly enough in the Web.com Tour Finals — they would still have conditional status on the PGA Tour, but that would mean far fewer starts next season.

Back on the Web.com Tour, the top 75 threshold on the regular-season money list is an important one as those who make that grade guarantee themselves at least full Web exemptions in 2019, along with spots in the Web.com Finals, where another 25 PGA Tour cards will be up for grabs.

With two Web events left, former Denver resident Mark Hubbard is 63rd on the season-long money list, while Englewood resident Jim Knous is 69th.

On the Symetra Tour, the top 10 players on the money list after the final eight events of the 2018 season will land LPGA Tour cards for 2019.

Three golfers with strong local ties have outside shots at making the top 10.

Former University of Colorado golfer Jenny Coleman (left), who held an LPGA card in 2017, sits in 23rd place on the Symetra money list. Becca Huffer of Denver is 28th, and former CU golfer Esther Lee is 33rd.

Meanwhile, the top five finishers on the PGA Tour Canada money list will earn Web.com Tour cards for 2019. And with four tournaments left in the season, former Louisville resident George Cunningham sits in third place with $66,167.

Cunningham — grandson of the late Chuck Melvin, who played in six Colorado Cup matches — won the GolfBC Championship in June and finished 29th in the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open last month.

Rarity https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/06/04/rarity-2/ Mon, 04 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/06/04/rarity-2/ It’s been very rare in recent decades that a U.S. Open golf championship is held without anyone in the field with strong Colorado connections.

It happened two years ago at Oakmont, but beyond that you have to look back more than a half-century to find a U.S. Open field without any Colorado “locals”.

But, barring a minor miracle, no one with major Colorado ties will be competing in next week’s U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, N.Y.

No local players are exempt, and on Monday, the 22 players with major Colorado connections who were competing in 36-hole U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying all came up short of advancing to the national championship.

But that’s not to say that no one came close.

Denver native Wyndham Clark, who was based in the state until graduating from the University of Oregon a year ago, finished one stroke out of a playoff for the final qualifying position in Summit, N.J.

And former Coloradan Mark Hubbard made a run in Richmond, Texas before falling three shots short.

In New Jersey, Clark started off relatively slowly with a 2-over-par 72, but the Web.com Tour regular gave himself a chance with a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 in round 2. But with the top five finishers qualifying, Clark ended up one stroke out of a two-man playoff for the final U.S. Open berth.

Hubbard, another Web.com Tour player who competed for three years on the PGA Tour, opened with a 7-under-par 65 that included an 18th-hole eagle in Texas. But he couldn’t sustain the momentum in the afternoon in posting an even-par 72. That left him at 7-under 137 and three strokes out of a playoff. Glenn Workman of Pueblo West, the 2017 CGA Amateur champion, recorded two straight rounds of 2-under 70 but also couldn’t get over the hump.

Monday marked the second of a two-stage qualifying process for the U.S. Open. A dozen 36-hole Sectional Qualifiers were held, including 11 on Monday and 10 in the U.S.

The U.S. Open itself will run June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills.

Here are the scores for all the players with strong Colorado connections who competed in Sectional Qualifying on Monday:

Local Tour Roundup https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/04/22/local-tour-roundup-7/ Sun, 22 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/04/22/local-tour-roundup-7/ Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Brandt Jobe paired up with his former UCLA teammate Scott McCarron to post his best finish on PGA Tour Champions since August.

Jobe and McCarron (pictured) ended up ninth out of 36 teams on Sunday in the Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf in Ridgedale, Mo. They recorded a 19-under-par 199 total, finishing five strokes behind winners Kirk Triplett and Paul Broadhurst, who beat Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman in a playoff.

The last three days of the event were played on a par-3 layout at Top of the Rock.

Laird 11th at Valero Texas Open; ex-Buff Creel Makes Cut in First PGA Tour Event: Former Colorado State University golfer Martin Laird recorded his third top-11 finish of the PGA Tour season by placing 11th on Sunday in the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

Laird, the 2013 winner of the Texas Open, went 73-65-69-72 for a 9-under-par 279, leaving him eight strokes behind winner Andrew Landry.

Meanwhile, Cheyenne native Josh Creel, who started his college career at the University of Colorado before finishing up at Central Oklahoma, Monday qualified to earn a spot in the Texas Open, the first PGA Tour event of his career.

Creel not only made the field, but earned a check by making the cut. He finished 64th after rounds of 69-72-73-76 for a 290 total.

Clark, Hubbard, Knous in Top 25 at Web.com’s North Mississippi Classic: Three players who grew up in Colorado — Wyndham Clark, Mark Hubbard and Jim Knous — notched top-25 finishes Sunday in the rain-shortened North Mississippi Classic on the Web.com Tour.

Clark (71-70-71) was 17th at 4-under-par 212 while Hubbard (69-72-72) and Knous (72-66-75) shared 22nd place at 213.

Local Tour Roundup https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/03/11/local-tour-roundup-6/ Sun, 11 Mar 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/03/11/local-tour-roundup-6/ Colorado Sports Hall of Famer Steve Jones showed very little indication of rustiness in his first PGA Tour Champions start in 28 months as he posted his best showing ever on the circuit on Sunday.

The former University of Colorado golfer finished strong to tie for sixth place in the Toshiba Classic in Newport Beach, Calif.

The 59-year-old had dropped back with a 1-over-par total on the front nine Sunday, but shot a 3-under-par 33 on the back nine to card a 2-under 69 in the final round. With three consecutive sub-par rounds (68-69-69), Jones finished at 7-under 206, four strokes behind winner Vijay Singh.

Jones, who counts the 1996 U.S. Open among his eight PGA Tour victories, hadn’t finished better than ninth in his 61 PGA Tour Champions starts prior to this week. But after last competing in an official tour event in November 2015, Jones (pictured) established a new personal Champions best. The showing on Sunday was worth $61,200.

Elsewhere in tour golf this weekend:

— Hubbard Sixth in Web.com Event: Denver native Mark Hubbard, who like Jones grew up in Colorado, scored his second top-10 finish of the season on the Web.com Tour by tying for sixth Sunday in the El Bosque Mexico Championship.

The former CJGA Player of the Year, who is back on the Web circuit in 2018 after three seasons on the PGA Tour, went 73-65-70-71 for a 9-under 279 total. He made five birdies on Sunday, including one on the 18th hole.

Martin Trainer won the tourament at 274.

Hubbard’s other top-10 this season came at The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic in January, where he placed 10th.

— Gilman Runner-up on Golden State Tour: Former University of Denver golfer Chris Gilman recorded his fourth top-10 finish in the last five Golden State Tour events by tying for second Friday in the Q-School Shootout in Santee, Calif.

Gilman posted scores of 70-69 for a 5-under-par 139 total, which left him three strokes behind champion Cody Blick of Alamo, Calif.

Gilman, a regular on the Web.com Tour in 2015, won the Moorpark Classic on the Golden State Tour last month.

Big Day for Locals https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/01/24/big-day-for-locals-2/ Wed, 24 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/01/24/big-day-for-locals-2/ Denver native Wyndham Clark recorded his best showing as a pro on a major U.S. tour on Wednesday by tying for fourth in The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic on the Web.com Tour.

Also placing in the top 10 on Wednesday was another Denver native, Mark Hubbard, who shared 10th place, giving him his eighth career top-10 showing on the Web.com circuit.

Clark, a former CGA Amateur champion and two-time state high school tournament winner, led after each of the first two rounds but cooled off a bit the final two days.

Clark (pictured) posted scores of 66-68-72-69 for a 13-under-par 275 total, leaving him four strokes behind champion Adam Svensson of Canada. Clark was 4 under par for the day through 13 holes, but bogeyed No. 15 and couldn’t capitalize on either of the par-5s down the stretch. His tie for fourth earned him $21,750.

The Great Abaco Classic was just Clark’s third start on the Web.com Tour since turning pro following his senior season at the University of Oregon, which included a victory at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Boulder.

Clark has also played in seven PGA Tour events, with a best showing of 17th at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Meanwhile, Hubbard, a regular on the PGA Tour the past three seasons, checked in two strokes behind Clark on Wednesday. The 10th-place showing was his best finish on the Web.com Tour — or the PGA Tour — since September 2015.

Hubbard eagled the par-5 eighth hole but played the back nine in 1 over en route to a 1-under-par 71 in the final round, leaving him at 11-under 277 overall. His showing was worth $13,300.

Elsewhere in professional golf on Wednesday, former University of Colorado golfer Jeremy Paul posted his first professional victory, winning the Pro Golf Tour’s Red Sea Ain Sokhna Classic in Egypt.

The Pro Golf Tour is a satellite circuit that feeds the European Challenge Tour.

Paul, who owns the best career scoring average in CU golf history (71.7) when he turned pro last April, recorded scores of 65-70-68 for a 13-under-par 203 total. A 23-foot birdie on the final hole gave the German a one-stroke victory and the first prize of 5,000 euros.

Paul, who competed in a dozen Web.com Tour events in 2017, recently earned conditional status on PGA Tour Latinoamerica by finishing 23rd in a Q-school tournament in Florida.

In the Hunt https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/01/23/in-the-hunt-3/ Tue, 23 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/01/23/in-the-hunt-3/ The bounce-back statistic in golf generally refers to a player rebounding from a bad hole (over par) with a good one (under par). But in a bigger perspective, Wyndham Clark scored very highly in the bounce-back stat.

The Denver native missed the cut in the season-opening tournament on the Web.com Tour just over a week ago, posting a very uncharacteristic 80 in the second round of The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic.

But Clark (pictured in a PGATour.com photo) has been a completely different player in his next tournament start and led after each of the first two days of The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic. And despite losing ground with a even-under-par 72 on Tuesday — after bogeying the par-5 18th — the former CGA Amateur champion trails by just four going into Wednesday’s final round of the event.

Clark, winner of the Pac-12 Conference Championship last April in Boulder, has gone 66-68-72 for a 10-under-par 206 total, leaving him in 10th place, four back of leader Willy Wilcox.

Clark is one of two former CGA champions to be in contention with one round left in the Bahamas. Fellow Denver native Mark Hubbard, who’s spent the past three seasons on the PGA Tour, also shares 10th place at 206.

Hubbard, winner of both major CGA junior titles in 2007, has gone 69-70-67 this week. He made seven birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday.

A Fresh Slate https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/01/11/a-fresh-slate/ Thu, 11 Jan 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/01/11/a-fresh-slate/ Colorado’s tour golfer community has undergone quite a few changes over the last few years. You could say it was a matter of people coming and going, but it was mainly going.

— Sam Saunders, grandson of Arnold Palmer, moved from Fort Collins to Atlantic Beach, Fla., in 2016. Saunders grew up in Florida.

— David Duval moved last year from Cherry Hills Village, also to Atlantic Beach. Duval has lived most of his life in northeast Florida.

— And Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Mark Wiebe departed Aurora in 2017 to become the director of instruction at San Jose Country Club. Wiebe played college golf at San Jose State.

— Meanwhile, 1997 British Open champion Justin Leonard moved in, to Aspen from Dallas, in 2015. Leonard, winner of a dozen PGA Tour titles, played in just one PGA Tour event in 2017. He serves on the broadcast team for the Golf Channel.

As the first full-field events of 2018 are held this week on the world’s top golf tours, we’ll continue with that theme and explore what’s new and different with the major tour players who have significant Colorado ties.

On the Mend: Two Colorado golfers who have had plenty of starts on the PGA Tour are on major medical extensions from the Tour.

Kevin Stadler, a part-time Denver resident, hasn’t competed on the world’s top golf circuit since the summer of 2015 due to a stress fracture in his left hand that he suffered late in 2014. Stadler, who withdrew after one round of a Web.com Tour event in July, has 26 starts remaining on his PGA Tour medical extension to earn $717,890, the amount he’ll need to keep his PGA Tour card.

In November, Stadler was among 18 new inductees into the University of Southern California Hall of Fame. Stadler, who counts a Colorado Open and two CGA Match Plays among his victories, won the 2014 Waste Management Phoenix Open on the PGA Tour.

Shane Bertsch of Parker, meanwhile, has two events left to earn $597,069 on his PGA Tour medical extension, which was due to a now-healed shoulder injury. The Denver native made two cuts in nine PGA Tour starts in 2017, and four cuts in 10 Web.com tournaments last year. He’s entered in the Web.com Tour’s Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, which begins on Saturday.

New on the Web.com Tour: Wyndham Clark, who lived in Colorado for all of his pre-college years, played in one Web.com Tour event in his first year as a pro in 2017 (along with seven tournaments on the PGA Tour). But in 2018 — starting Saturday in the Bahamas — Clark will be an official Web.com Tour member after finishing 23rd in the final stage of Q-school. After wrapping up his amateur career with three individual college wins in 2017 — including the Pac-12 Conference Championship in Boulder — the former University of Oregon golfer turned pro last June. Since then, he finished as high as 17th on the PGA Tour and 23rd on the Web.com Tour.

Meanwhile, Denver native Mark Hubbard is no stranger to the Web.com Tour, though he’s spent most of the last three seasons on the PGA Tour. But the former Colorado junior player of the year lost his PGA Tour card last year and failed to regain it through Q-school, so he’s back to the Web circuit in 2017, starting this weekend in the Bahamas. Hubbard has played in 34 Web events, posting seven top-10 finishes.

Also in the Bahamas field this week is Jim Knous of Englewood, who is back for his second year on the Web circuit, along with Bertsch and former Golden resident Andrew Svoboda.

U.S. Senior Open in Colorado Awaits: The 2018 PGA Tour Champions season begins Jan. 18 with the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii. That’s the first official event of a 2018 schedule that is highlighted by the U.S. Senior Open that The Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs will host June 28-July 1.

World Golf Hall of Famer Hale Irwin, the Boulder High School and University of Colorado graduate who has won a record 45 times on PGA Tour Champions, is among a half-dozen PGA Tour Champions players with major Colorado ties. But the one who figures to make the most noise at The Broadmoor, based on recent seasons, is Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Brandt Jobe. Jobe (pictured) won on PGA Tour Champions for the first time in 2017 and finished third in the U.S. Senior Open after a third-round 62. He ended up seventh on the 2017 PGA Tour Champions money list with almost $1.4 million.

Players with significant Colorado ties entered in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship include Irwin, Jobe, Craig Stadler, Esteban Toledo and Wiebe.

LPGA Tour Absence: No Colorado locals will compete regularly on the LPGA Tour this season as former CU golfer Jenny Coleman lost her card in 2017 after making just one cut in 10 events. Coleman and her twin sister, Kristin, will likely play mainly on the Symetra Tour in 2018.

In Europe: On the European Tour, former CU golfer Sebastian Heisele has returned for his second straight season after improving his status by finishing 18th in the final stage of Q-school. He posted third- and fourth-place finishes last season on the top European circuit. And former University of Denver golfer Espen Kofstad has returned to action after missing 10 months following wrist surgery. He’s missed his first two cuts this wraparound season.

On the Ladies European Tour, returning are former DU golfers Eleanor Givens and Tonje Daffinrud, who finished 70th and 73rd, respectively, on the 2017 LET money list.

Coloradans Shine in Q-school https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/12/10/coloradans-shine-in-q-school/ Sun, 10 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/12/10/coloradans-shine-in-q-school/ Two former Colorado Junior Amateur champions, Denver native Mark Hubbard and Wyndham Clark of Highlands Ranch, both finished among the top 25 on Sunday out of a field of 144 at the final stage of Web.com Tour Q-school in Chandler, Ariz.

Clark used a hole-in-one at the 180-yard sixth hole on Sunday to help him earn his Web.com Tour card for 2018, while Hubbard continued his torrid play for the third straight day.

Hubbard (pictured), who already had Web.com Tour status for 2018 after being on the PGA Tour the last three seasons, tied for seventh place on Sunday after a stellar final three rounds. Over the last 54 holes, Hubbard went 66-64-67, carding 20 birdies and one bogey. He went bogey-free both Saturday and Sunday to finish at 19-under-par 269 overall.

By placing in the 2-10 range, Hubbard earned $15,000. Over the last three years on the PGA Tour, Hubbard has won more than $1.2 million, but he lost his card in the late summer.

Meanwhile, Clark landed Web.com Tour status as a rookie competing in his first Web Q-school. Clark went through three stages of Q-school, finishing second in the first stage, winning the second stage, and placing 23rd on Sunday in the final stage.

By finishing in the 11-45 range in the final stage, Clark will be exempt at least until the second “reorder” of the Web.com Tour season.

“Officially have a job!” Clark said on Twitter.

After going 66-69-65 the first three rounds, Clark closed with an even-par 72 on Sunday to post a 16-under 272 total. He backed up his hole-in-one at No. 6 with a double-bogey 7 at No. 7 and finished the day with an eagle, two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. His showing this week was worth $10,000.

All in all, it’s been quite a year for Clark, who now lives in Las Vegas. In 2017, he:

— Won three individual college titles in his final semester at the University of Oregon, including claiming the Pac-12 Conference Championship at Boulder Country Club.

— Was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year and was one of three finalists for the male college golfer of the year honor.

— Helped Oregon finish second as a team in the NCAA Championship Finals.

— Earned his PGA Tour Canada card, though he didn’t end up competing in any events on that circuit.

— Turned pro in June and played in seven PGA Tour events, finishing 17th in the Sanderson Farms Championship.

— And then he capped things off with his stellar play in the three stages of Q-school to earn his Web.com Tour card.

Former University of Georgia golfer Lee McCoy claimed medalist honors in the final stage of Q-school with a 28-under-par 260 total.

All told, nearly 1,000 golfers entered Web.com Tour Q-school this year.

Here are the scores for all the players with strong Colorado connections who competed this week in Chandler:

(Top 45 Finishers Earn Web.com Tour Status for 2018)
7. Denver native Mark Hubbard 72-66-64-67–269
23. Wyndham Clark of Highlands Ranch 66-69-65-72–272
131. Former Golden resident Andrew Svoboda 70-74-71-72–287

Big Day for Coloradans https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/12/09/big-day-for-coloradans/ Sat, 09 Dec 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/12/09/big-day-for-coloradans/ The boys from Colorado had one sensational Saturday at Web.com Tour Q-school in Chandler, Ariz.

Wyndham Clark of Highlands Ranch shot a 7-under-par 65 to move into a share of seventh place at 16-under 200 with one round left in the final stage of the qualifying process.

Meanwhile, Denver native Mark Hubbard did one better on Saturday, firing a bogey-free 64 for a three-round total of 202, leaving him tied for 14th place.

Clark (pictured), the 2017 Pac-12 Player of the Year, posted his 65 despite a bogey on his final hole Saturday. The Coloradan, who has played in seven PGA Tour events this year, made an eagle, seven birdies and two bogeys in round 3.

Hubbard, a regular on the PGA Tour the past three years until losing his card in late summer, carded eight birdies and shot a 6-under 30 on the front nine on Saturday. Over the last two rounds, Hubbard has made 15 birdies and one bogey and posted rounds of 66-64.

Players finishing in the top 45 and ties after four rounds will receive some exempt status on the Web.com Tour in 2018, with the medalist earning a guaranteed spot for the entire season and others in the top 10 being exempt for a longer period than the remaining players in the top 45. Finishers after the 45 and ties will have conditional Web status next year.

Besides Web.com Tour status, there’s money at stake this week. The medalist on Sunday will earn $25,000. Finishers 2-10 and ties will receive $15,000 apiece, and 11-45 and ties $10,000 each.

American Lee McCoy and South Korean Sung-jae Im share the lead after three rounds at 21-under-par 195.

Here are the scores for all the players with strong Colorado connections who are competing this week in Chandler:
