Sixty-four two-person teams are entered in the 12th annual event, with competition in eight different flights.
Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club and Laurie Steenrod of Saddle Rock Golf Course won the title in this event twice together (2013 and ’15), and while they’re both entered this weekend, it’s with different partners.
Austin will compete with Kathy West of Castle Pines Golf Club, and Steenrod with Bev Hoffenberg of Columbine Country Club. Also in the seven-team championship flight are Mary Doyen of Foothills Golf Course — winner of the 2011 CGA Women’s Senior Stroke Play and the 2012 senior division of the CGA Women’s Match Play — and partner Jill Kirkpatrick of Broken Tee Englewood.
The Chapman Stroke Play format calls for two-person teams, with each golfer hitting tee shots, then playing her partner’s ball for the second shot. After that, a scoring ball is chosen, and that ball is played alternately into the hole.
The Dunham Chapman was renamed prior to the 2017 championship as a tribute to Jo Ann Dunham, a longtime CWGA volunteer whose brainchild was the Chapman, which was first contested in 2007. Dunham passed away on Sept. 28, 2016, just shy of her 77th birthday.
The Lakewood resident served on the CWGA’s volunteer board of directors from 2004 through ’09, chairing the tournament committee during that period and serving on that same committee for years before joining the board. Besides the Chapman, she was instrumental in the creation of the CWGA Niblick Tournament, another team event.

]]>The CWGA Club Team Championship will be held for the 14th time on Monday (Sept. 25), with The Ranch Country Club in Westminster hosting the tournament this time around.
The event features an ABCD stroke play format in which the scores of four players of significantly varying abilities are added up for a gross aggregate team total.
A team from Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs will be back to defend its title. Lita Van Cleave will return after playing on the Patty Jewett foursome that won the title by nine strokes last year.
Other former champions in the field including South Suburban (2014 and ’15), Blackstone/Black Bear (2013), Saddle Rock (2011), Glenmoor (2010), The Meadows (2009), The Ranch (2008) and Heather Ridge, winner of the inaugural championship in 2004.
Among the individuals scheduled to compete who have won individual CWGA championships are Laurie Steenrod (Saddle Rock) and Mary Doyen (Foothills). Kelly Martin from Fox Hollow recently teamed up with Deb Hughes to win the CWGA Dunham Chapman title. And Sue Hartwell from West Woods earlier this month made it to the round of 32 at the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur.
For Monday’s pairings at The Ranch, CLICK HERE.
]]>The three “” Kim Eaton, Christie Austin and Lynn Zmistowski “” have combined to win this championship eight times since 2006, with Eaton capturing the title four times, and Austin and Zmistowski twice each.
The 36-hole tournament will feature 116 players competing in a variety of flights, with handicap indexes ranging from plus-1 for Eaton to 32.
Last year’s champion, Deb Hughes, isn’t entered as she’s competing in the Senior Women’s North & South Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, N.C. But the winners of every CWGA Senior Stroke Play from 2006 through ’14 are scheduled to tee it up. In addition to Eaton (winner in 2009, ’10, ’12 and ’13), Zmistowski (2006 and ’08) and Austin (2007 and ’14), 2011 champion Mary Doyen is entered. Only six-time champion Lynn Larson has won the CWGA Senior Stroke Play more than Eaton.
Eaton will be seeking her 24th CWGA championship overall as she’s pursuing the record of 25, set by Carol Flenniken. Eaton won the CWGA Senior Match Play title last month at Buffalo Run Golf Course in Commerce City.

]]>A team from outside the Denver metro area had won the CWGA Club Team Championship just once — and never when the event was contested in the metro area — but a squad from Patty Jewett Golf Course in Colorado Springs broke new ground in an emphatic way on Monday.
With many competitors getting into the spirit of the event by wearing color-coordinated outfits at Valley Country Club, the team in pink from Colorado Springs ruled the day.
Though none of its four team members had played in the event before, Patty Jewett caught on quickly in posting a nine-shot victory in the ABCD stroke play format in which the scores of four players of significantly varying abilities are added up for a gross aggregate team total. Patty Jewett’s final tally of 363 was just four strokes off the tournament record, set last year by South Suburban.
Patty Jewett’s winning foursome — out of a 32-team field — consisted of Louise Lyle, who shot a 10-over-par 82; Hilary Dussing (86); Lita Van Cleave (91) and Beth Lindquist (104). (Pictured above are the champions, from left: Lindquist, Dussing, Lyle and Van Cleave. At left are Van Cleave and Lyle holding the trophy.)
“It’s nice (to prevail) because the Denver clubs seem to win everything,” Lyle said. “It’s nice to be like the little club that could. Our club itself is going to be so ridiculously happy. That’s what makes me so excited about it.”
Added Van Cleave: “They’ll be screaming. It’ll be so much fun. I’m excited about it because we’re a public course down in Colorado Springs and we want to make our club proud. It’s just a joy to be allowed to be part of this team.”
Patty Jewett, which hosted the first CWGA championship 100 years ago last month, joined the 2012 squad from the Country Club of Colorado as the only Colorado Springs teams to have won this event. The Country Club of Colorado prevailed at its home club four years ago.
Hyland Hills, The Club at Rolling Hills and the team from Blackstone/Blake Bear shared second place Monday at 372, while host Valley CC was fifth at 373.
South Suburban, winner of this event the last two years, placed ninth at 380 in the last CWGA championship of 2016.
In tying for second place individually, Lyle chalked up a birdie and eight pars in very windy conditions, while Dussing made a birdie and six pars, Van Cleave six pars, and Lindquist two.
“Everybody had bad shots (and) everybody had a bad hole or two,” Van Cleave said. “But we all had some good holes too. On a few of the holes, we all had good holes together. The D player (Lindquist) was getting some pars. That helped everyone involved.”
When asked after the round what they had shot individually, neither Lyle nor Van Cleave knew right away.
“We were just trying to play as a team,” Lyle said. “Somebody would have a bad hole, but someone else would have a par, and it’s like, ‘OK, we’re good.’ We weren’t trying to keep track of numbers. We were just thinking middle of the pack is great. We really didn’t have any expectations coming in. We just wanted to have a good time, and it just ended up that we pulled it out.
“Hilary had a couple of crazy chips that went about 6 inches from the cup. We all had some really good shots. It wasn’t like one person.”
Van Cleave wasn’t even originally scheduled to be on the squad competing at the Club Team Championship, but when another competitor’s handicap went down too much to be a C player, Van Cleave received a call.
“They said, ‘Can you fill in for us?’ I said, ‘You bet, because I’ve wanted to do this for many years,'” Van Cleave recalled. “You have to be asked at our club. I felt very honored to have this opportunity to play.”
Individually on Monday, Nina Dulacki of Broken Tee shot the best score of the day overall, an 8-over-par 80. Lyle and former CWGA Senior Stroke Play and Senior Match Play champion Mary Doyen from Foothills tied for second place in the individual competition at 82.

But to hear her tell it, that was about the furthest thing from the truth.
“I haven’t won this before — I’ve come in second once — but that’s a lot of pressure,” the player from Green Valley Ranch Golf Club said. “I was so distracted by how I stood and what I wanted to do — and then I’ve got to hit a shot. It’s very, very stressful.”
However it came about, Tuesday’s performance resulted in a lopsided victory. And not only that, but a career “senior slam” for Hughes in CWGA championships.
Two years after claiming the CWGA Senior Match Play title, Hughes posted her double-digit victory in the Senior Stroke Play. She shot a 5-over-par 79 on Tuesday, leaving her at 7-over 155 overall.
Hughes, who will turn 59 next week, becomes the sixth player to have won both the CWGA Senior Stroke Play and the Senior Match Play over their careers. She joins Lynn Larson, Mary Doyen and Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Christie Austin, Kim Eaton and Lynn Zmistowski.
“When I won the (Senior) Match Play, I wanted this so bad — too much, to be honest,” Hughes said. “I wanted to win both. My wife (Alex) and I, we’re not Buddhists, but in Buddhism you’re supposed to (let go) of expectations. That kind of helped me. But now that I have (the CWGA senior slam), my golf career is pretty awesomely set. It’s the source of immense pride for me.”
Colorado Golf Hall of Fame inductee Janet Moore trailed Hughes by three after the first round, but withdrew before round 2 due to back problems. So tying for second place in the championship flight on Tuesday, at 166, were Bev Hoffenberg of Columbine Country Club and Kathleen Johnson of The Ranch Country Club.
Though Hughes made two double bogeys on Tuesday, including three-putting from 1 foot on one hole, the rest of the round she was rock solid, posting a birdie, 13 pars and two bogeys. And she almost aced the 128-yard par-3 11th hole, where she made birdie, hitting an 8-iron to 6 inches.
For the 36-hole tournament, Hughes finished with six birdies.
All in all, it was a very satisfying end to a golf season in which she has played in an abundance of tournaments, including the recent U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur in Wellesley, Mass.
“I had a really (busy) year” on the golf course, Hughes said. “I was tired. To be honest when I came into the tournament, I was saying to a friend, ‘I just want this to be over. I want to rest, I want to sleep.’ So I get to rest now. And I feel so great about the win.”
Gross-score champions in the other flights of the Senior Stroke Play on Tuesday were: Pam Cortez of Coal Creek (165, first flight), Carol Key of the Country Club of Colorado (173, second flight), Marie Schriefer of South Suburban (177, third flight) and Connie Garcia of Fox Hollow (192, fourth flight).

The 40 players who are scheduled to vie for 10 spots in the U.S. Senior Women’s Am include seven golfers who have qualified at least twice in Colorado for this national championship:
Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Janet Moore, who was medalist at Cordillera in last year’s qualifier; part-time Gunnison resident Marilyn Hardy; Deb Hughes of Denver; Kathy Malpass of Evergreen; Mary Doyen of Denver; Bev Hoffenberg of Greenwood Village; and Jennifer Hocking of Colorado Springs. And several others in the field have qualified in Colorado for the Senior Women’s Am once.
Hardy may be the most accomplished player in the field in USGA championships. She was a quarterfinalist in the 2013 U.S. Senior Women’s Am and has made it to the semifinals and the quarterfinals (in separate years) of the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. Twice in the past three years at the Senior Women’s Am, she lost to the golfer who would go on to win the national title.
The 10 players who earn national championship berths this year in Colorado will compete Sept. 17-22 at Wellesley Country Club (pictured) in Massachusetts.

After Mary Doyen birdied her first hole in Tuesday’s final round of the CWGA Senior Stroke Play Championship, a thought occurred to her: “If I can do that every hole, maybe I’d have a chance” to win.
Yes, that’s how lopsided the tournament was at Greeley Country Club.
Doyen, the defending champion, only exaggerated slightly in inferring it would have taken near perfection for her — or just about anyone else in the field — to overtake Kim Eaton on the final day of the Senior Stroke Play.
Eaton, a Colorado Golf Hall of Famer who was competing on a course she estimates she’s played more than 1,000 times, took a six-stroke lead into Tuesday’s final round, and she was nine shots ahead of the third-place golfer.
And that was just the beginning. Eaton extended that lead considerably on Tuesday, to the point that her victory margin was one of the largest — if not the largest — in CWGA championship history.
The records are far from comprehensive, but it’s hard to imagine many wins bigger than 16 strokes. That’s how much separated Eaton from runner-up Doyen.
Eaton won her third Senior Stroke Play — she missed last year’s tournament — and her 19th CWGA championship overall, but this one was extra special, and it wasn’t because of the margin of victory.
“It’s not so much (claiming the title) the third time that I’m happy about; it’s winning on my home course that I grew up on,” said the 53-year-old former golf professional, a graduate of University High School in Greeley. “I’ve never been able to win a (state) tournament in Greeley until today.”
Eaton shot a 3-over-par 74 on Tuesday and finished at 5-over 147 for two rounds. Doyen, the player from Foothills Golf Course who won the senior division of the CWGA Match Play earlier this summer, closed with a 79 to earn second place at 163. Laurie Steenrod of Saddle Rock and Jessi McVay of CommonGround tied for third at 165.
Eaton was a member at Greeley Country Club — or the daughter of members — most of his life, though she now resides in Tempe, Ariz. So while most of the competitors struggled at the course, Eaton was right in her element. She even had some fans on hand, including her uncle, Larry Eaton, a fellow Colorado Golf Hall of Famer.
“It’s just nice winning in your hometown and having my aunt and uncle out watching me and telling me I played well,” said Kim Eaton, who was coming off a runner-up finish last weekend in the Senior Women’s North and South Championship in Pinehurst, N.C.
Eaton made two birdies in her final five holes Tuesday — including a chip-in on No. 17 (pictured at left) — to make her margin of victory all the more impressive.
“The golf course is set up for me; it’s long, and I hit it long,” she said.
Doyen said Eaton, a quarterfinalist two of the last three years in the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur, is tough to beat anywhere, much less on a course with which she’s so familiar.
“It’s a tough course,” Doyen said. “I understand a little bit better about why Kim Eaton is such a good player, having grown up here, because you get every shot here.”
Tuesday’s victory gives Eaton 10 individual CWGA championships: three Senior Stroke Plays, four Stroke Plays, one Match Play, one Senior Match Play and a Junior Match Play. She’s also captured nine team titles: six Brassies, a Chapman, a Mashie and a Mixed.
Meanwhile, while Doyen was no match for Eaton this week, she rightfully took stock in what she’s accomplished in the last year in the Colorado women’s senior ranks. Doyen held the Senior Match Play and Senior Stroke Play trophies at the same time, and she placed second on Tuesday.

It was a successful week for teenagers and sixty-somethings alike at the CWGA Match Play Championship at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont.
While 18-year-old Allie Johnston of Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course became one of the youngest winners in the 97-year history of the tournament, 60-year-old Mary Doyen of Foothills Golf Course proved age and experience can be assets in golf as she claimed the senior division championship title.
Johnston, the 2011 CWGA Junior Player of the Year, rallied down the stretch on Wednesday to post a 1-up win in 36 holes over defending champion Somin Lee of Denver. And Doyen earned her second consecutive CWGA senior title by notching a 5-and-4 title match victory over Deb Hughes of Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. (Johnston and Doyen are pictured above with their trophies.)
“Turning 60 ain’t so bad,” Doyen said after backing up her CWGA Senior Stroke Play win in 2011 with Wednesday’s victory. And, just for good measure, she also recorded a hole-in-one this week, acing the 130-yard 11th hole on Monday with an 8-iron.
“I’ve got good karma,” she said. “It was just a good week.”
Likewise for Johnston (pictured at left), who will play golf for the University of Texas-San Antonio beginning in the fall. She not only won her third CWGA championship — following the 2011 Junior Stroke Play and the 2012 Mashie team title — but she showed considerable resiliency in the process.
Johnston, who was 3 up after the morning round, faltered in the afternoon and was 2 down after 31 holes. But she took advantage of back-to-back three-putts by Lee to win the 32nd and 33rd holes, the second of those with a two-putt birdie.
Then Johnston won a third straight hole with an approach shot that finished a foot from the cup for a birdie at No 16. She kept her 1-up lead on the 35th hole despite a tough, long bunker shot from an uphill lie. She blasted the 25-yard shot to 5 feet and made the par putt.
Then, after Lee lipped out a 6-foot birdie attempt on the 36th hole, Johnston closed out the match by draining a 4-foot par putt.
“I was just extremely angry at myself for losing five holes to her (earlier in the afternoon round),” Johnston said. “I was trying to swing good and I just didn’t want to lose. That was my only thought: I don’t want to lose.”
In playing her last four holes in 2 under par, Johnston denied Lee from becoming the first back-to-back CWGA Match Play champion since Wendy Werley in 1988 and ’89.
“I’m not going to lie: I think I put too much pressure on myself to defend the title,” said Lee (pictured at left), a Pepperdine University golfer who has won four individual CWGA state championships. “I left many shots out there. But I shouldn’t regret anything. (Johnston) played really good. I guess I just didn’t play good enough to win this thing again.”
After lipping out the birdie putt that would have forced extra holes, Lee couldn’t bring herself to watch as Johnston holed the match winner.
Perhaps not coincidentally, Johnston played her best golf when she was fatigued after walking and carrying her clubs for 36 holes on Wednesday.
“I was so tired (at the end) I couldn’t think, so it really helped,” she said with a chuckle. “That was my theory going into this round walking was maybe I won’t think once I get tired.
“But I’m so happy,” added Johnston, who ranks this title as one of her best, along with an AJGA championship she won last year in Texas. “This has just really, really made my week. That was so much fun. I’m still stuck on it.”
In the senior final, Doyen (pictured at left) never trailed and built a 5-up lead after 10 holes en route to her 5-and-4 victory. Doyen’s prowess on the greens proved too much for Hughes, a qualifier for the last two USGA Senior Women’s Amateurs.
“When I grow up, I want to putt like Mary Doyen,” Hughes said with a smile. “That’s all I have to say. It was uncanny. She had her distance correct, she had her pace, her line, everything. Everything was just dead-on. I didn’t stand a chance with her putting.”
Doyen carded three birdies on the day in ending the match at No. 14.
“Today it was there,” she said. “I was listening to a meditation tape by (sports psychologist) Bob Rotella on the way up (driving to Fox Hill),” Doyen said. “I missed the Longmont exit because I was meditating. I was just in a zone. It was one of those days where things were just good.”
The result was Doyen’s second CWGA title in less than 11 months.
“Winning any state championship is just marvelous,” she said. “I’m just elated. I’m just as pleased as I can be that I won a second one. I’m not sure I ever thought I’d win a first one.”

]]>Mary Doyen didn’t want to rain on anyone’s parade, but before the start of a scheduled playoff that was supposed to decide the CWGA Senior Stroke Play champion, she had something important to say to a tournament official Tuesday afternoon.
And though she certainly didn’t phrase it this way, the basic implication was straightforward: Why are three fellow competitors going to play off when I’ve already won?
The point was well-taken, and after all the scores were confirmed, the playoff was nixed and Doyen was declared the champion by one stroke.
“I’m still kind of in shock,” the 59-year-old from Denver said minutes later.
Indeed, after Doyen shot an 84 in Monday’s first round at Colorado Springs Country Club, the last thing on her mind was winning the title. With 18 holes left, she was in eighth place and trailed leader Cindy Pallatino by seven strokes.
“I didn’t have any thought that I would win,” Doyen said.
But a nifty 1-over-par 74 on Tuesday — the best final-round score by four shots — combined with the leaders faltering a bit changed the complexion of the tournament. Still, the lead threesome — Pallatino (pictured at left), Sue Davis and 2011 CWGA Senior Match Play champion Laurie Steenrod — had no idea about Doyen’s comeback. And when all three tied at 13-over-par 159, a playoff was organized and they were set to go — until Doyen pointed out the problem.
“I’m not sure the three of us could have taken another hole anyway,” Davis said. “We threw a lot of shots away.”
With Doyen posting a 158 total, Pallatino, Davis and Steenrod had to settle for a second-place tie, one behind the champion. Steenrod (pictured at left) closed with a 78, while Davis had an 80 and Pallatino an 82.
“First off, congrats to Mary,” Pallatino said. “A 74 is a great round on the final day.”
And it resulted in the biggest victory ever for Doyen, who placed second to Kim Eaton in the Senior Stroke Play last year.
“I’m absolutely elated,” she said. “This is probably the biggest golf thrill I’ve had in my life. This is the pinnacle. And I’m 59 so it gets harder every year.”
Playing two groups ahead of the leaders, Doyen went even par over her last 16 holes Tuesday and finished her second round with three birdies. “I just played pretty darn well — about as good as I could play,” she said.
“I think it might have helped” not playing with the first-day leaders, Doyen added. “I was only playing against myself. I wasn’t thinking about anything else. I was just trying to shoot a good score. The pressure of being in there and knowing what was going on (with the leaders) might have been more than I wanted.”
Not only was Doyen not thinking about winning the tournament, she said wasn’t even keeping track of her score.
“I never thought of anything but one hole at a time,” said Doyen, who plays out of both Foothills and Broken Tee Englewood. Even afterward, the possibility of victory didn’t enter her mind. “I was just so proud of myself for shooting 74 that I didn’t think about anything else. “
It was quite a different mindset than she had after carding an 84 on Monday.
“I was playing so bad I was ready to pack my bags and go back home,” she said.
While Doyen had a very good final round, Pallatino, Davis (pictured at left) and Steenrod each could point to key letdowns in the stretch run that may have cost them the title. Pallatino dropped six shots to par in the last five holes, Davis went 3 over in the last three and missed a two-foot par putt on No. 16, and all three players bogeyed No. 18.
“What typically happens on the last day when you have three people who think they’re the ones who are competing (for the title), you get a goofy kind of karma going on,” observed Pallatino, a former member at Colorado Springs Country Club. “Unfortunately, ours wasn’t very positive.”
Pallatino, who held a four-stroke lead with five holes remaining, was left with a second-place showing for the umpteenth time in her career.
“I like being a bridesmaid, I guess,” said Pallatino, who did win the senior division of the 2008 CWGA Match Play. “It’s so bad that when I moved into my house in Scottsdale (Ariz.), my little neighbor friend next door said, ‘Why do you have so many runners-up (trophies)?'”
Three of the top four finishers Tuesday — Doyen, Steenrod and Davis — all recently qualified for the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur that will be played Sept. 10-15 in Oolteewah, Tenn.
