The 2013 USGA championship season wrapped up last week, and it certainly included its share of highlights for golfers with strong Colorado connections.

The USGA conducted 14 national championships for which Coloradans tried to qualify. And while there were no victories — or extremely close calls — for players from the Centennial State, there were plenty of notable moments.

Here are a smattering:

— Just a couple of weeks after becoming only the third player ever to win a specific CGA championship four consecutive years — in his case, the CGA Mid-Amateur — Keith Humerickhouse (pictured above) of Eagle made some noise in the U.S. Mid-Amateur.

The left-handed former pro defeated two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., in the round of 32 by a 1-up margin.

“To beat him, it’s pretty special for sure,” Humerickhouse said of Jackson, the 1994 and 2001 U.S. Mid-Am champion. “He’s so steady. I knew he was going to hit fairways all day long.”

Unfortunately for Humerickhouse, he didn’t have long to savor the win as he played a round-of-16 match that same afternoon, and his run ended there.

— Part-time Gunnison-area resident Marilyn Hardy advanced to match play in both the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, but in each case she lost to players who would go on to win the national championship. Ellen Port, the 2012 champ, beat Hardy in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Senior Am, and Julia Potter ousted Hardy in the round of 32 at the Mid-Am.

— The team representing Colorado (pictured at left) tied its best showing ever in the USGA Women’s State Team Championship by placing sixth in the 52-team field.

High school golfers Hannah Wood and Jennifer Kupcho were joined by former University of Denver player Melissa Martin in forming the Colorado contingent. Wood and Kupcho tied for 11th place individually.

Colorado also placed sixth in the 2009 USGA Women’s State Team.

— Speaking of Wood, she made it to the round of 64 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links after getting into the field at the last minute as an alternate, driving to Oklahoma and competing without the benefit of a practice round.

— As for Kupcho, the 16-year-old qualified for four USGA championships in 2013 (Women’s Publinks, Girls’ Junior, Women’s Amateur and Women’s State Team). She advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Girls’ Junior and also had her strong showing in the Women’s State Team.

— Spencer Painton of Aurora, who later would go on to win the Class 5A state high school individual title, made it to match play at the U.S. Junior Amateur, but lost in the round of 64 to Scottie Scheffler of Dallas, who would go on to win the national title.

With Painton and Josh Seiple of Castle Rock advancing to match play, it marked the first time since 2009 (Wyndham Clark and Brendan Connolly) that two Coloradans accomplished that feat in the same U.S. Junior Am. And Seiple was the first Coloradan since Clark (2009 and ’10) to qualify for two consecutive U.S. Junior Ams. Clark went to the round of 16 in 2009 and to the round of 64 in 2010.

A third 2013 qualifier for the Junior Amateur, Jake Kelley, was a high school teammate of Painton at Regis Jesuit, which recently won its fourth consecutive 5A state team title.

— Speaking of Clark, this year he qualified for his third U.S. Amateur, this time making it to the round of 64 out of the original field of 312.

— In all, players with major Colorado connections made the cut 19 times in USGA championships this year. And that doesn’t include the Colorado squad that placed sixth in the USGA Women’s State Team.

Here’s a quick rundown of which players with strong Colorado ties survived the cuts (36 holes in all-stroke-play events, or to match play in all-amateur championships):

U.S. Open June 13-16 in Ardmore, Pa. — Players with strong Colorado ties who made the 36-hole cut: former Colorado State golfer Martin Laird (finished 21st).

LPGA, Web.com Q-School Set to Start https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/08/22/lpga-web-com-q-school-set-to-start/ Thu, 22 Aug 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/08/22/lpga-web-com-q-school-set-to-start/ We’re already in late August, but for players with tour aspirations, the pivotal part of the golf season still awaits.

Though, starting this year, there’s no such thing as earning a PGA Tour card directly through qualifying school anymore, the quest for spots on the LPGA Tour and the Web.com Tour begins within the next week. And that quest includes plenty of golfers with strong Colorado connections.

Due to changes announced last year, instead of 25 PGA Tour cards being available through Q-school and another 25 through the Web.com Tour, all 50 available PGA Tour spots will be awarded through Web.com Tour performance.

That leaves the Web.com Tour as the top status that can be attained through Q-school, starting this year.

But on the women’s side, LPGA Tour berths are still directly at stake through Q-school. The number of 2014 LPGA spots that will be up for grabs hasn’t been specified, but last year the top 20 finishers at the final qualifying tournament earned fully-exempt status and another 25 and ties received conditional status.

In both the cases of the LPGA and Web.com Tours, the qualifying process begins next week.

The first of three stages of LPGA Tour Q-school will be contested over 72 holes on Aug. 27-30 in Rancho Mirage, Calif. As of Thursday, 247 players were entered in the event. Among them are three-time CWGA Stroke Play champion Melissa Martin (pictured), a former University of Denver golfer from Grand Junction; two-time state high school champion and 2012 U.S. Women’s Open qualifier Becca Huffer of Denver; former DU golfer Kimberly Kim, the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur champion and former LPGA Tour card-holder; former Big Sky Conference champion — and University of Northern Colorado golfer — Carleigh Silvers; and former University of Colorado golfer Emily Childs.

The top 100 players will advance to stage 2 — Oct. 8-11 in Venice, Fla. — with the top 80 finishers and ties there going to the final stage, set for Dec. 4-8 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

As for the men, there are four qualifying stages for the Web.com Tour. First up are the six pre-qualifiers, 54-hole tournaments that will be held between Aug. 28 and Sept. 13, with the first being next week’s events in Nebraska City and Hollister, Calif.

Here are the local players scheduled to compete in Web.com pre-qualifying next week:

Nebraska City Aug. 28-30 — Austin Dean of Centennial, Chris Good of Denver, Alex Gutesha of Greenwood Village, Kory Harrell of Colorado Springs, former University of Denver golfer Klinton Krieger, Bryan Kruse of Westminster, former CSU golfer Ryan Peterson Beau Schoolcraft of Denver, former Coloradan Justin Spray.

The top finishers at the pre-qualifying sites will advance to the dozen 72-hole first-stage tournaments (Oct. 8-25). The six 72-hole stage 2 events are set for Nov. 12-22, and the 108-hole final stage is scheduled for Dec. 12-17 in La Quinta, Calif.

The top 45 finishers and ties at the final stage will receive priority status on the 2014 Web.com Tour, with the other finalists being conditionally exempt.

As for the Champions Tour, regional qualifying is set for mid-fall, with the final stage scheduled for Nov. 19-22 in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The European Tour Q-school gears up with stage 1 starting Sept. 10 and concludes with the finals Nov. 10-15 in Girona, Spain.

Thrice as Nice https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/06/28/thrice-as-nice/ Fri, 28 Jun 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/06/28/thrice-as-nice/ There were times in the last few years when Melissa Martin entertained thoughts of throwing in the towel regarding high-level competitive golf.

But after rebuilding her swing, then struggling to get back to peak form, a big payoff came on Friday.

The former University of Denver golfer joined an elite group of players who have won the CWGA Stroke Play Championship three times. For Martin, victory No. 3 came Friday at The Ranch Country Club in Westminster, where she pulled away on the back nine of the final round to prevail by an impressive eight shots.

“Three years ago I decided to rebuild my swing when I came to DU (from Colorado State), and it’s been like an uphill battle for three years,” Martin said. “I’ve been so sick and I’ve wanted to quit so many times, but I didn’t. It’s finally all paying off.”

The CWGA Stroke Play has now been contested 66 times and only six other golfers have won the title on at least three occasions: Carol Flenniken (eight), Janet Moore (five), Kim Eaton (four), and Sally Hardwick, Joan Birkland and Nicki Cutler (three each).

At 23 years old, Martin (pictured above and at left) became part of that group on Friday, having previously won the CWGA Stroke Play in 2009 and ’10.

After being tied with 2013 CWGA Junior Stroke Play champ Kelly Moran of Boulder Country Club after 10 holes of Friday’s final round, Martin put the pedal to the metal to pull away. The golfer from Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction made three straight birdies — all from inside of 10 feet — starting on No. 11 en route to shooting a 1-over-par 72. That gave Martin a 7-over-par 220 total at The Ranch, where the greens put even the best golfers to the test.

Moran, who will play college golf at William & Mary in Virginia beginning in the fall, closed with a 78 to share second place at 228. Also at that figure was 2012 champion Somin Lee of CommonGround Golf Course, who carded a 74 on Friday.

Colorado State University golfer Christina Spinzig of Hiwan Golf Club posted a final-round 77 for a 229 total, good for fourth place.

As for Martin, she coincidentally won at The Ranch, where her DU coach, Lindsay Hulwick, claimed the 2005 CWGA Stroke Play championship. Hulwick and DU assistant coach Erik Billinger were among those following Martin on Friday. Also on hand were several of Melissa’s family members who made long trips early Friday morning to watch: her mom and dad came in from Grand Junction and her aunt and uncle from Fort Morgan.

“That was really special,” said Martin, who graduated from DU earlier this month.

With Martin tentatively planning to turn pro later this year — possibly in time for the HealthOne Colorado Women’s Open in September — and compete in LPGA Tour qualifying, this state amateur stroke play may be her last.

Winning “is really special because I don’t know if I’ll get to play in this tournament next year,” she said.

For a while on Friday, it didn’t look like any sure thing that Martin would emerge victorious. Though none of her opponents ever took the outright lead, Moran (pictured at left) did tie it up in the middle of the final round.

The 17-year-old parred every hole on the front nine Friday to catch Martin, who started the day two ahead of Moran. And the two remained tied after matching bogeys on No. 10.

But Moran ended up shooting a 6-over-par 42 on the back nine and she made two double bogeys along the way. Her crisp iron shots from earlier in the round often fell short of the green on the back nine.

“Toward the end my irons really let me down a lot and I had some shorter putts that I missed that really hurt,” Moran said. “It was kind of snowballing a little bit.”

Holes 11, 12 and 13 basically decided the tournament as Martin holed birdie putts of 8, 4 and 6 feet while Moran went par-bogey-double bogey. That added up to a six-stroke swing in three holes.

“She’s an incredible player,” Moran said of Martin. “She’s really solid. If she makes a mistake, she fixes it right away. She’s one of the most solid players I’ve ever played with. It was definitely an honor to play with her given her credentials. She played a really great round and it was hard to compete with.”

But Martin (pictured at left) was frustrated in the middle of her round, especially with going 3 over par in four holes starting on No. 7.

“There were a series of bad shots or bad decisions and that bummed me out,” she said. “And Kelly was playing super solid. She was scrambling really well. I had to kind of ride (that out) and get back on the wave, and the approach shot on 11 is where I got back on it.

“I just really wanted to make good shots and make good putts because … I haven’t done it for so long. And once it finally comes together, you just want to keep doing it. Obviously I wanted to win, but I didn’t really think about that. I just thought about trying to get the ball into the hole.”

While Martin won the championship flight on Friday, four-time champ Eaton claimed the title in the first flight as a final-round 74 gave her a 231 total.
