The Broadmoor Golf Club overcame a finish in near darkness, some “crazy” pin placements and a major challenge from Rifle Creek Golf Course to win the CGA Team Interclub title for the second time in five years on Saturday.

The Broadmoor, competing in the finals of the season-long Team Interclub for a record fourth time, defeated Rifle Creek at the CGA-owned CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora 13-11 in Saturday’s championship match.

Coincidentally, The Broadmoor beat Rifle Creek in the finals the other time it won the Interclub title, in 2014.

The only other club that has captured the CGA Team Interclub championship twice is Lone Tree Golf Club, which prevailed in 2011 and ’12.

The eight Broadmoor players all wore black on Saturday in honor of prominent club member Char Berglund, who unexpectedly passed away on Oct. 10. Berglund was the wife of Art Berglund, a longtime hockey executive and former general manager of the U.S. hockey team who is a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame.

“We won today for Char,” said team captain Mike Allred. “(Her death) was a shock to the golf club at The Broadmoor. We all wore black because the funeral was today.”

Four players won both their singles and concurrent four-ball matches on Saturday, two from each side: Allred — who scored crucial 1-up singles and four-ball victories by sinking a tough 5-foot par putt on No. 18 — and Tom Haggard from The Broadmoor, and Tod Smith and Mark Sours from Rifle Creek.

Joining Allred and Haggard on the championship-winning team from The Broadmoor were Curtis Olson, Ron Crowder, Luke Travins, Joe Diver, Roger Perry and Scott Meagher. Allred, Crowder, Perry and Meagher have been on both Broadmoor teams that have won Team Interclub titles. (This year’s champions are pictured above.)

In fact, in every year The Broadmoor has competed in the CGA Team Interclub since 2013, it’s made the finals. The club didn’t entered the competition last year.

“It feels pretty good, right boys?” Allred said, speaking to his teammates. “Every year we’ve played (in the last five) we’ve made it to the finals. We’ve won two and lost two. Not bad.” (Allred, left, and four-ball partner Curtis Olson are pictured.)

As noted, Rifle Creek has been on the losing end both years The Broadmoor has prevailed, and it also fell to Lone Tree in the 2012 title match.

“The Broadmoor is a good team and they came out on top,” acting Rifle Creek captain Jeb Savage said. “But we’ll be back next year. We love playing in this. It’s a fun format. It’s good to play other teams — guys you don’t know. It’s good to play other competition and at other courses. We enjoy it a lot and like traveling. It was an all-around good season.”

A frost delay at CommonGround caused tee times to be pushed back for the Interclub finals on Saturday afternoon, and for the second straight year many of the matches finished in near darkness. This time around, the final group concluded its round at 6:45 p.m., a half-hour past sunset.

In addition, a “Heaven and Hell” tournament held earlier in the day led to some wicked pin placements for the Interclub finals at CommonGround.

“It was a funky golf course today,” said Savage (pictured in green with four-ball partner Manuppella). “We all played the (same pin placements) but it was tough.”

In one case, on No. 10, the cup was located on such a slope that offline putts in the 5-7-foot range were making 180s and ending up in nearly the same place where they were initially stroked.

“On hole 10, I honestly felt in the spirit of competition, we’d just say ‘Good, good, good, good’ (conceding all four players’ putts) and get out of there. Just pick ’em up,” Allred said.

But despite the darkness and hole locations and some solid play from Rifle Creek, The Broadmoor kept its perfect record for 2018 intact, finishing the season 7-0. Rifle Creek, which was making its third finals appearance, ended up 5-1-1.

“We’re all super competitive,” Allred said of the players from The Broadmoor. “The weird thing is we all play against each other all year. I hate losing to all these guys. But they’re all really fun, good golfers.”

The CGA Team Interclub stands apart among CGA championships. Every other championship on the schedule is contested over the course of one to four days. The Team Interclub, on the other hand, typically lasts five months or more, with a regular-season round-robin of geographically-linked groups of teams going from May through July, then a 16-team single-elimination playoff from August to October.ӬӬ

Both in the regular season and the playoffs, teams of eight golfers each — of widely varying abilities — square off, with net singles and net four-ball matches held concurrently. Each individual match is worth two points — two for a win and one for a tie. Rosters can vary throughout the season.

This year’s original CGA Team Interclub field featured 32 teams, six more than last year. Rifle Creek and The Broadmoor came from the two round-robin groups that were the furthest from Denver.”¨”¨

As part of the Team Interclub, the CGA will donate $500 to each of the junior golf programs at the clubs which qualified for the finals.ӬӬ

Back for More https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/10/12/back-for-more-25/ Fri, 12 Oct 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/10/12/back-for-more-25/ The season-long CGA Team Interclub Championship will conclude its ninth year next weekend when the CGA-owned CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora hosts the finals.

Over the years, 10 different clubs have advanced to the finals of the Team Interclub. And half of those have made at least two finals appearances. But the two clubs that have qualified for the finals most of all are The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado Springs and Rifle Creek Golf Course in Rifle.

And guess who the two 2018 finalists are who will square off on Oct. 20 at CommonGround?

That’s right — The Broadmoor and Rifle Creek.

The Broadmoor will be making its fourth appreance in the finals and Rifle Creek its third. But the only time either club has actually won the title was in the one previous year that they squared off in the finals, 2014. The Broadmoor earned the trophy that year with a 23-13 victory. This year will mark the first time two teams have met twice or more in the Interclub finals.

(For the record, the other three clubs that have made the Team Interclub finals more than once are Lone Tree, Todd Creek and Battlement Mesa. And Lone Tree remains the only two-time champion of the event, having won in 2011 and ’12, though The Broadmoor would give LT company should it beat Rifle Creek next weekend.)

The CGA Team Interclub stands apart among CGA championships. Every other championship on the schedule is contested over the course of one to four days. The Team Interclub, on the other hand, typically lasts five months or more, with a regular-season round-robin of geographically-linked groups of teams going from May through July, then a 16-team single-elimination playoff from August to October.

Both in the regular season and the playoffs, teams of eight golfers each — of widely varying abilities — square off, with net singles and net four-ball matches held concurrently. Each individual match is worth two points — two for a win and one for a tie. Rosters can vary throughout the season.

This year’s original CGA Team Interclub field featured 32 teams, up six from last year. The record number of team entrants for the event was 64 in 2013. Notably, both Rifle Creek and The Broadmoor come from the two round-robin groups that are the furthest from Denver.

Two changes took effect for this year’s Team Interclub — going from teams of 12 to teams of eight, and teams are now comprised of four “A” players of low handicap indexes of 9.9 and under and four “B” players of low handicaps between 10 and 20.

Both clubs in this fall’s Team Interclub finals are undefeated going into the last match of the year, with The Broadmoor being 6-0 and Rifle Creek 5-0-1, with the tie coming against Battlement Mesa during the regular season.

The Broadmoor is the top seed in the playoff bracket, having scored more points in the regular season (57) than any other club, but it was tested in getting to the finals. Representatives of the Colorado Springs-based resort course edged Lone Tree and Elmwood by 14-10 margins in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals, respectively, before beating The Meadows 16-8 in the semifinals. The Broadmoor’s previous finals appearances came in 2014, ’15 and ’16.

Seventh-seeded Rifle Creek, a public course that also made it to the finals in 2012 and ’14, defeated Broken Tee Englewood 17-7 in the round of 16 and Mariana Butte 16-8 in the quarterfinals. Then in the semis, RC ousted defending Team Interclub champion Saddle Creek/Murphy Creek, 16-8.

When The Broadmoor and Rifle Creek met in 2014 for the title, it was the first of three straight final appearances for the Colorado Springs club. The 23-13 win gave The Broadmoor a 7-0 record that 2014 season. In fact, it won all seven of its matches by double-digit margins.

Four Broadmoor players on that winning team in 2014 will compete again in the finals on Oct. 20: Mike Allred, Ron Crowder, Roger Perry and Scott Meagher. And five Rifle Creek competitors from that 2014 runner-up team are back: Jeb Savage, Tod Smith, Mark Sours, Michael Higginbotham and Pat Hays.

The Team Interclub finals will conclude the 2018 CGA championship season.

50 Years and Counting https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/06/12/50-years-and-counting/ Tue, 12 Jun 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/06/12/50-years-and-counting/ Nondis Lowther can remember the first time she played in what is now known as the Cowgirl Shootout golf tournament in Rifle.

It was 1968, and Lowther was in her mid-20s and teaching school in Glenwood Springs. She competed in the second flight.

This weekend, 50 years later, Lowther, now in her mid-70s, will be back at Rifle Creek Golf Course on the Western Slope, playing in yet another Cowgirl Shootout. And why not? Over the last half-century, she’s competed in the tournament more often than not.

“I’ve probably played in more of them than anyone,” she said in a recent phone interview. “I lived in Broomfield with my late husband and I’d come over with people from Boulder and Broomfield. Then we moved over there; I only live a mile and a half from the course.”

The Cowgirl Shootout, which debuted June 22-23 in 1968 as the Ladies Western Slope Amateur at the then-nine hole Rifle Creek Course, will celebrate its 50th anniversary this weekend, when it’s played for the 51st consecutive year.

Local resident Bonnie Smeltzer won the championship flight that first year. Lowther claimed the second flight title. The entry fee for the 36-hole event was $10 that first summer, including a free practice round on the Friday preceding the event.

The entry fee now is up to $150 for the two-day tournament — including cart, two continental breakfasts and special awards buffet on Sunday — and it’s as popular as ever, with 120 women expected to play.

This year, given the tournament milestone, a 50th anniversary celebration reception will be held after Saturday’s round, complete with live music. At that event, a handful of people who were either involved that first year or during the first few years of the tournament will be honored, along with others who have played over the years. Some of the guests will come from as far away as Denver and Grand Junction.

Lowther estimates that she personally has competed in the Cowgirl Shootout 30 times. One of the most notable came in 1969.

“I came over from graduate school and I won the championship flight and I have a little trophy. That’s cool,” she said. “It’s a typical golf trophy and it has Second Annual Rifle Ladies Invitational 1969 on it.”

Lowther moved to Rifle — which sits along I-70 about 185 miles west of Denver — from Broomfield in 1996.

She became chairperson of the tournament for probably 11 years. Running the event for many years before that was Marge Oberholtzer, who who has since passed away.

“She was very creative and would come up with a different theme every year,” Lowther said of Oberholtzer. “She was also was the one that started using the eclectic format (where a player’s best score on each given hole over the two days is counted). She was very instrumental in the tournament.”

Coming up with different themes each year was dropped shortly after Oberholtzer stepped away from her tournament role. And early this century the event took on its current name.

In recent years, a committee has run the event. Candy Hammerich serves as the president of the Wednesday Ladies Club at Rifle Creek and has played a key role as a Cowgirl Shootout committee member.

In preparing for this anniversary, Lowther and Hammerich “went through the newspaper (archives) downtown in the library,” Lowther said. “We’ve been planning it all year. In January and February, we spent hours finding really fun articles about women that played and how they organized it. We’re going to have a video showing some of that, and we’re going to have an album.”

So what makes the Cowgirl Shootout special as it approaches its 50th anniversary?

“We draw women from all over the state — Denver, Colorado Springs, Grand Junction, Montrose and Delta; it’s not just local,” Lowther said. “The other special thing is everyone has fun because it’s an (individual) eclectic tournament. If you get an 8 on one hole the first day and you get a 5 the next day, you get to keep the 5. People like that format. And our course is a tough course. I remember one time a lady had a 13 on (hole) 13 and the next day she had a 10. The pro when he was setting up the course said, ‘That’s an improvement. She got a 10.'”

Rifle Creek has long since been expanded to an 18-hole layout, and as part of the 50th anniversary, the flags on all 18 greens during the tournament will feature a logo with “50th Cowgirl Shootout. 1968-2018” on them. Some replica flags will be presented to the key guests at the reception.

All in all, it figures to be a rip-roaring good time — as it always is — with a little extra celebrating to boot.

Teaming Up for Victory https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/08/06/teaming-up-for-victory/ Sun, 06 Aug 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/08/06/teaming-up-for-victory/ Winning never gets old, whether you’ve claimed 18 CWGA titles or just one.

Just ask Christie Austin of Cherry Hills Country Club, owner of the 18 victories, or teammate Kathy West of Castle Pines Golf Club, who earned her first CWGA championship on Sunday.

The two paired up at Rifle Creek Golf Course for an eight-stroke win in the Brassie Championship, a best-ball stroke-play event. It was Austin’s sixth Brassie title, with West being her fourth partner in victory, following Liz Ivancie (1990), Janet Moore (1994, 2001 and 2010) and Tori Glenn (2014). (The 2017 champions are pictured, with Austin at left.)

“It’s always such a fun format,” said Austin, who was inducted into the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame in 2015. “I’ve enjoyed four-ball, both stroke and match, for close to 30 years playing in these events. I love playing partner events.”

Indeed, of Austin’s 18 CWGA titles, 15 have come in two-person team events: six each in the Brassie and Mashie, two in the Chapman and one in a Mixed event. (Individually, Austin has been victorious twice in the CWGA Senior Stroke Play and once in the Senior Match Play.)

In this case, Austin met West in Scottsdale, Ariz., at a club where both are members. And since West and her husband, who are primarily Tulsa residents, are spending more time in Castle Pines these days, Austin and West joined forces for the Brassie.

“This is my first time to play in a CWGA championship,” West said. “It’s a really friendly group of people here, and that’s part of the fun of it.”

Another part was West making a hole-in-one during Saturday’s first round “” with a gap wedge on the 112-yard 15th hole. It was the third ace of West’s life, and second in competition.

“But it’s been a long time, so that felt like the first one actually,” she noted.

After Saturday’s 1-under-par 71 “” which included a two-stroke penalty for hitting from the wrong tee box on No. 13 “” Sunday’s final round was less eventful. Their even-par 72 in round 2 left them at 1-under 143 overall. They made three birdies and three bogeys in the second round.

“We hung in there today,” Austin said. “We had a few holes where one or the other of us wasn’t in the hole. And each of us had a couple of times where we did some really great things.

“What (fellow competitor) Kathy Malpass told us was, “˜You guys really paired well this week.’ She was right. When one of us hit it out of play, the other one hit it right down the middle. We managed our risk well. We made a couple of silly bogeys today, but all in all I’m really pleased with the way we paired as a team. It was very comfortable. We laughed and we joked. We kept it very light and easy, and we came out a winner.”

Malpass, from Hiwan Golf Club, and partner Katherine Moore-Lilly from Cordillera finished second in the championship flight at 151 after closing with a 77. Lynn Larson and Laurie Steenrod, who have twice won the Brassie as teammates, shared third place at 160 with Lynne Batchelder and Nancy Ziereis, who shot a second-round 81.

The gross-division winners of the other flights were Donna Edelen and Becky Finger (170 in first flight), Karla Hutchinson and Kathleen Mikoloyck (175 in second flight), and Sue Means and Nondis Lowther from Rifle Creek (172 in third flight).

With the exception of the first flight, the same teams won the net division titles. Penny Sykes and Candy Hammerich prevailed in the net competition in the first flight.

Redemption https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/08/05/redemption/ Sat, 05 Aug 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/08/05/redemption/ Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Christie Austin, winner of the CWGA Brassie Championship five times, has put herself in position for title No. 6, with the help of teammate Kathy West.

With West’s hole-in-one at the 112-yard 15th hole, she and Austin combined to shoot a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday and take a three-stroke lead at the midway point at Rifle Creek Golf Course in Rifle.

Ironically, West’s ace came two holes after she, and then Austin, hit from the wrong tee on the par-5 13th, where a two-stroke penalty left them with a double-bogey 7.

“(West’s) comment after the ball drifted into the hole (on 15 was) ‘I redeemed myself,'” Austin noted in a text. “It was hysterical and great, all at once.”

Austin and West carded an eagle, three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on Saturday in the best-ball stroke-play event.

Their closest pursuers in the championship flight going into Sunday’s final round are Kathy Malpass and Katherine Moore-Lilly, whose 74 included three birdies.

Sitting in third place are Lynn Larson and Laurie Steenrod, who won the Brassie in 2000 and ’08. They posted a 77 on Saturday.

The gross-score leaders in the other flights after round 1 are Judy Maillis and Lyn Bullen (80 in first flight), Karla Hutchinson and Kathleen Mikoloyck (87 in second flight), and Nondis Lowther and Sue Means (84 in third flight).

The tournament will conclude on Sunday.

Perfection for Broadmoor https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/10/26/perfection-for-broadmoor/ Sun, 26 Oct 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/10/26/perfection-for-broadmoor/

The sun shined brightly and warmly on all the participants in Sunday’s finals of the CGA Team Interclub Championship, but particularly so on players from the Broadmoor Golf Club — not only this weekend but all season.

On a day when the temperature approached the 80-degree mark, the Broadmoor completed a dominant, undefeated year by beating Rifle Creek Golf Course for the Team Interclub title at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora.

The Broadmoor defeated Rifle Creek 23-13, giving the Colorado Springs-based club a 7-0 record in 2014. To add to the accomplishment, the Broadmoor won all seven of its matches by double-digit margins. Overall, the club outscored its opponents 188-64. (The Broadmoor’s title-winning team is pictured above.)

“At least for a year, we’re the best. It’s fun,” said Mike Allred, one of five Broadmoor competitors to win both their singles and four-ball matches on Sunday. “We’ve been doing it and doing it and doing it (in the Team Interclub over the last five years). Last year we came close (losing by two points in the first round of the playoffs). This year, everybody just turned it on when it needed to be turned on.”

That included on Sunday, when the Broadmoor beat a Rifle Creek team that has made the final four at each of the last three CGA Team Interclubs. The Broadmoor prevailed 14-10 in the singles on Sunday, and 9-3 in the four-ball matches, which were held concurrently.

Teammates joining Allred in winning both singles and four-ball matches on Sunday were Ron Crowder, Scott Meagher, Josh Waymire and Jerry Petersen.

“This is some good fun at the club and gives us some bragging rights, I guess,” said Crowder (pictured at left in the red cap with Allred). “It’s really fun for me (because) I lived (at Lowry, where CommonGround is located) as a kid 60 years ago. The golf course didn’t even exist then.

“But I think we have a big advantage because of the greens at the Broadmoor. You’ve got to putt at the Broadmoor, and these things always boil down to putting. I saw a women’s tournament on TV recently, and a commentator was talking about So Yeon Ryu, who won the (2011) U.S. Women’s Open at the Broadmoor. And he said, ‘She can putt. She won it at the Broadmoor. Those are some of the toughest greens in America.’ And I think they’re right.

“You really have to know how to putt to score there.”

Allred seconds the notion.

“I think what it is is, the Broadmoor trains you to be an excellent golfer,” the 2.3-handicapper said. “It just makes you a better golfer. I think all these guys, if they didn’t play golf there, we wouldn’t be here. It’s world-class training to play golf at that golf course. It just fine-tunes everything.”

While five players went 2-0 for the Broadmoor on Sunday, Jim Grabe was the lone competitor from Rifle Creek to do likewise. Rifle Creek lost in the finals for the second time in three years, and it went to the semifinals last fall. Seven competitors from the 2012 finals played again on Sunday.

The Western Slope-based course finished the season 5-1, not including an opponent’s forfeit. (Pictured at left are Rifle Creek players Michael Smith and Jeb Savage.)

“We’ve got to find a way to get a win on some neutral territory,” said Kyle Daniell, the head professional at Rifle Creek. “Being our second time in the championship match, we wanted to get a win this year. Last time we were in it (2012), we were just happy to be there and it was a good experience. This was a great experience too, but we came with intention to win this year and that’s what we’ll continue to do.

“Definitely (the Team Interclub) is a big deal for us. We talk about it all the time. We get over 30 guys interested in playing. We have no problem filling the team. Maybe some clubs don’t take it as serious, but we take it serious. It’s good competition for our members and it’s good to see them out there competing.”

Sunday marked the conclusion of a season-long net match play championship that began on May 3 and which originally featured 61 teams from across the state. The finals were the 83rd match of the 2014 competition, not counting walkovers.

The “regular season” lasted from May through early August, with geographically-linked groups of four teams playing round-robins against one another. The team from each group with the highest point total advanced to the 16-team playoffs, which ran August through October.

Both in the regular season and the playoffs, teams of a dozen men each — of widely varying abilities — square off, with singles and four-ball matches held concurrently. Each individual match is worth two points — two for a win and one for a tie.

As part of the Team Interclub, the CGA will donate $500 to each of the junior golf programs at the clubs which qualified for the finals.

The Team Interclub concludes the 2014 CGA championship season.

CGA Team Interclub Set to Crown Champs https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/10/23/cga-team-interclub-set-to-crown-champs/ Thu, 23 Oct 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/10/23/cga-team-interclub-set-to-crown-champs/ It started on May 3 when two Eastern Plains clubs squared off, with Quail Dunes Golf Course defeating Coyote Creek Golf Course 24-12. It will end on Sunday — 176 days later — when a stalwart of southern Colorado, the Broadmoor Golf Club, faces Western Slope-based Rifle Creek Golf Course at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora.

Suffice it to say that the fifth annual CGA Team Interclub Championship has had all parts of the state covered.

And, after almost six months of competition, the 2014 champion will be crowned on Sunday at CommonGround, where the Broadmoor and Rifle Creek will meet in the finals of a competition which originally featured 61 teams, the second-most in the history of the event.

The CGA Team Interclub is a season-long net match play competition that involves golf clubs from throughout the state. This year’s championship included teams from as far west as Adobe Creek National Golf Course in Fruita, as far east as Bunker Hill Country Club in Brush, as far south as Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo, and as far north as Fort Collins Country Club.

The “regular season” lasted from May through early August, with geographically-linked groups of four teams playing round-robins against one another. The team from each group with the highest point total advanced to the playoffs, which run August through October. This year, the finals will mark the 83rd match of the year, not counting walkovers.

Both in the regular season and the playoffs, teams of a dozen men each — of widely varying abilities — square off, with singles and four-ball matches held concurrently. Each individual match is worth two points — two for a win and one for a tie.

Rifle Creek, a public course located just north of I-70 in Rifle, about 185 miles west of Denver, becomes just the second club to qualify for two CGA Team Interclub finals. Rifle Creek also made it in 2012, when it lost 28-8 to two-time champion Lone Tree Golf Club. (Pictured above are two players from that 2012 Rifle Creek team, Jeb Savage and Cole Manuppella. Savage is one of seven Rifle Creek competitors returning from that 2012 finals team.)

In this year’s Team Interclub, Rifle Creek has gone 5-0, not counting one walkover match. It has outscored its opponents by a combined 115-65, with its closest match being a 19-17 victory over Glenwood Springs Golf Club.

The other finalist, the Broadmoor, has been even more dominant. The resort club, seeded No. 1 in the playoffs, has gone 6-0, collectively outscoring opponents 165-51. Every one of the Broadmoor’s six victories has come by a double-digit margin, with the closest a 23-13 win over Hiwan Golf Club.

Both teams came up with strong semifinal performances to make it to the final two, with the Broadmoor routing Sunset Golf Course 30-6 and Rifle Creek defeating Lincoln Park/Tiara Rado 26-10.

Overall in the playoffs, the Broadmoor has beaten the Pinery 25-11, Hiwan 23-13 and Sunset 30-6. Rifle Creek defeated Riverdale 21-15, 2013 runner-up Todd Creek 23-13, and Lincoln Park/Tiara Rado 26-10.

The Team Interclub concludes the 2014 CGA championship season.

Lone Tree Sets Itself Apart https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/10/20/lone-tree-sets-itself-apart/ Sat, 20 Oct 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/10/20/lone-tree-sets-itself-apart/

At this point, the CGA Team Interclub Championship must seem like child’s play to Mike Morong and Andrew Pimental.

In the last two years, their golf club, Lone Tree, has captured consecutive championships in an event which draws more than 50 teams.

And beyond that, Morong and Pimental have won both of their matches each year in the finals of the season-long net match-play competition.

Of course, that kind of team and individual success isn’t so simple to come by, but Morong, Pimental and to some extent everyone associated with Lone Tree’s team seem to have struck upon the right formula.

The club from the southern part of the Denver metro area became the first repeat winner in the short history of the Team Interclub by defeating Rifle Creek Golf Course 28-8 in Saturday’s finals at CommonGround Golf Course.

“We’re all excited about it,” said Randy Gaddis, who won both his singles and four-ball matches on Saturday while shooting a 4-under-par 67 on his own ball. “We were excited last year, and I think we’re more excited this year in winning it again. I don’t know what will happen next year, but we’re going to try again.”

Gaddis, who chipped in for an eagle on the par-5 third hole Saturday, was one of five players who competed in last year’s finals for Lone Tree and returned to win a second championship on Saturday. Joining him are Morong (pictured at left hitting an awkward shot on No. 11), Pimental, Doug Moore and William McDermott.

Probably not coincidentally, four of those finals veterans won both their singles and four-ball matches on Saturday: Gaddis, Moore, Morong and Pimental. And three finals newcomers joined them in going 2-0: Garrett Farnsworth, Peter Garvin and Denny Schroeder.

In shooting 69 on Saturday, Morong joined Gaddis in breaking 70. What’s been the key to Morong’s two-year run of success in this event?

“I love match play,” he said. “I love the competition. And I think what I really love is CommonGround. It’s a great golf course and it fits my eye. I always seem to play well here. But match play is unique; you get zoned in. It’s a real fun format.”

In its domination of Saturday’s all-public course finals, Lone Tree only lost two of 12 singles matches (two were halved) and one of six four-ball matches.

“It was really fun, but we just got beat,” said Rifle Creek captain Pat Hayes, who won a four-ball match with Steve Stanek and halved his singles match against McDermott. “This is our first year in this (event) and we were undefeated (in the 16-team playoffs) until today.” (Pictured at left are Rifle Creek’s Jeb Savage and Cole Manuppella.)

Saturday’s match was the 92nd of the year in the 5 1/2-month-long Team Interclub, which this season featured 59 golf clubs from around the state. Each of the finalists played seven matches — three in the regular season and four in the 16-team playoffs — with Lone Tree and Rifle Creek both finishing with 5-2 records.

In each dual, teams of 12 players of varying abilities compete against one another, with singles and four-ball matches held concurrently. Each match within the team match is worth two points — two for a win and one for a tie.

Unlike last year, when Lone Tree went 6-0 in the Team Interclub, it lost two of its first three matches this season and advanced to the playoffs out of its four-team group by a single point, 62-61.

“We got our butts kicked legitimately two of the three (with losses coming against the combined Saddle Rock/Murphy Creek team and The Meadows in pool play),” said non-playing Lone Tree team captain Jim Eliassen. “We handed (the pool title) to them on a silver platter and they couldn’t do it.”

Once again this year, Eliassen played a major role in Lone Tree’s winning the title, though it wasn’t with his clubs. Eliassen spends many hours analyzing handicaps, trends and each player’s game in order to field the strongest possible team for a given course. At various points in the season, a total of 45 players from Lone Tree competed in the Team Interclub. (Pimental is pictured at left with his daughter, Elin, who took a shine to sitting in the Team Interclub trophy.)

“We’ve got a good captain who puts the teams together,” Gaddis said. “He studies the handicaps and talks to guys about how they’re playing — if they’re trending down or trending up. He puts together the best team and no one questions who he picks. And we have 200 guys in our men’s club so there’s a big pool for him to choose from.”

Added Morong: “Every single time our captain put a team together, our B and C guys (the middle and higher handicaps in the range up to 18) came through. When we needed it, they were the ones that came in and did it.”

Still, despite all of Lone Tree’s talent, experience and analytical know-how, Eliassen didn’t foresee a 20-point margin of victory over Rifle Creek.

“I figured they’d be right on our heels,” he said.

The CGA, in rewarding the Team Interclub finalists, contributed $500 each to Lone Tree and Rifle Creek’s junior golf programs.

The Team Interclub finals conclude the CGA’s 2012 championship season.

Lone Tree Coming Back for Seconds https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/10/18/lone-tree-coming-back-for-seconds/ Thu, 18 Oct 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/10/18/lone-tree-coming-back-for-seconds/ After 5 1/2 months of competition and 91 matches played so far this year, the CGA Team Interclub Championship will crown its third winner this weekend.

And champion No. 3 could bear a remarkable resemblance to champion No. 2.

When the season-long net match play interclub competition concludes on Saturday with the finals at CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Lone Tree Golf Club will seek its second straight title. Trying to unseat the champs will be a men’s club at another public facility — albeit one more than 200 miles away — Rifle Creek Golf Course.

Saturday’s matchup, which will feature singles and four-ball matches held concurrently, culminates a championship which began on May 5. A total of 59 clubs from around the state entered teams, up from 52 last year and 40 in 2010.

Competing teams battled it out through round-robin matches in pool play, with the top clubs advancing to the 16-team playoffs. Both in the regular season and the playoffs, teams of 12 men of widely varying abilities square off; Saturday’s finals will feature players with handicap indexes ranging from 17.8 to a plus-2.4. Each individual match is worth two points — two for a win and one for a tie.

After going 6-0 in its matches last year — including a 24-12 victory over Battlement Mesa Golf Club for the title — Lone Tree hasn’t had an easy road back to the finals. In fact, the defending champs won one and lost two in their group, but edged The Meadows Golf Club 62-61 in points — over the course of three pool-play matches for each team — to earn an automatic spot in the playoffs.

Then in the single-elimination playoffs, Lone Tree advanced by narrow margins — 20-16 over the Broadmoor and 20-16 over The Meadows in the round of 16 and the quarterfinals, respectively — before defeating Broadlands 23-13 in the semis.

Not only has Lone Tree returned to the finals, but nearly half of the team members are the same as last year. The five scheduled returnees are Randal Gaddis, Doug Moore, Mike Morong, Andrew Pimental and William McDermott.

As for Rifle Creek, it will take a 5-1 record into the finals, having only lost to a combined team from Tiara Rado and Lincoln Park. In each of its five victories, Rifle Creek has won by at least eight points, including a 22-14 semifinal victory over Eagle Vail. Rifle Creek is the second straight finalist from the Western Slope, joining Battlement Mesa.

The CGA Team Interclub finals conclude the association’s 2012 championship season.

Eaton, Holt Team Up for Another CWGA Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2012/07/29/eaton-holt-team-up-for-another-cwga-title/ Sun, 29 Jul 2012 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2012/07/29/eaton-holt-team-up-for-another-cwga-title/ Kim Eaton keeps checking things off her victory “to do” list.

The latest tournament to get marked off came Sunday when the Colorado Golf Hall of Famer teamed up with Tami Holt to win the CWGA Chapman Championship at Holt’s home club of Rifle Creek Golf Course in Rifle.

Actually, this one was more of a runaway than a contest as Eaton and Holt shot an impressive 2-under-par 69 Sunday for a two-day total of 3-over 145. That was good for a 14-stroke victory over Sally Lawrence of Broken Tee Englewood and Liz Kennedy of Tiara Rado, who closed with a 77. Mary Doyen of Foothills and Vicki Porter of CommonGround took third at 161.

For Eaton, it was her 18th CWGA championship, but her first win in the Chapman. (She’s pictured above at right with Holt.)

“It feels great,” said Eaton, who plays statewide tournament golf in both Colorado and Arizona. “This one I hadn’t won yet — it was only the second time I had played — so it was nice to get this one.”

For the record, Eaton has won four CWGA Stroke Plays, one Match Play, one Junior Match Play, two Senior Stroke Plays, one Senior Match Play, one Chapman, one Mashie, one Mixed and six Brassies.

Speaking of the Brassie, Eaton and Holt teamed up last year to claim that title, which was Holt’s first in CWGA championships. For CWGA title No. 2, Holt had the pleasure of playing at her home course of Rifle Creek.

“That makes it very special, and to play with Kim is a treat,” the Glenwood Springs resident said. “But this is a tough format. It took some time to get used to it the first day (Saturday).”

The Chapman features a two-person team format in which both players tee off, they hit one another’s balls for the second shot, then they pick one ball to play — alternately — into the hole.

In other words, both players contribute significantly to how the team fares.

“You put more pressure on yourself to hit good shots,” Eaton said. “You don’t want to put your partner in a bad position.”

Said Holt: “You feel bad if you don’t hit a (good) shot. That makes it tougher mentally. But we threw out 69 today, which is pretty amazing. Kim is just sturdy, but I pulled out some shots today too.”

Indeed, after a first-round gross score of 76, the two seemed to have the hang of it on Sunday with their 69, which included four birdies.

For Eaton, it was her second statewide win of the year following shoulder surgery over the winter. She won the Arizona Women’s Golf Association Senior Match Play earlier.
