Fifty-five players will be in the field, with the top three finishers earning spots in the Senior Am, which will be contested Aug. 25-30 at Eugene Country Club in Oregon.

Of those 55, almost one-fifth have competed in the U.S. Senior Am just in the last five years.

The list includes Wyoming resident John Hornbeck, the 2018 CGA Senior Match Play champion who has played in three U.S. Senior Amateurs, going to the quarterfinals in 2016. Also, there’s three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk (round of 64 in 2017), Guy Mertz (2017), Robin Bradbury (round of 64 in 2016), Gary Albrecht (2016), Jim Reynolds (2016), Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore (2015), Thomas Roos (2015), and David Delich and Harry Johnson (both 2013 and ’14).

Also competing on Tuesday are Steve Ivan, winner of the 2017 CGA Senior Amateur and runner-up in the 2018 CGA Senior Match Play; Charlie Post, who played in the 2017 U.S. Senior Open; 2015 CGA Senior Amateur winner Bill Fowler; 2014 CGA Senior Match Play champ Tom Musselman and Sean Forey.

Out for More https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/09/08/out-for-more/ Fri, 08 Sep 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/09/08/out-for-more/ Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood Country Club, aiming to become the third player to win the CGA Mid-Amateur at least three consecutive years, grabbed the first-round lead on Friday after shooting a 3-under-par 69 at Keystone Ranch Golf Course.

Lindstrom, who’s won the Mid-Am in 2008, ’15 and ’16, birdied his final two holes and finished with five birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Should the Broomfield resident win on Sunday, he’d join Keith Humerickhouse (2010-13) and Rick DeWitt (1999-2002) as a winner of this event at least three straight years.

Five players share second second place at 70, including 2014 champion Chris Thayer of Walnut Creek Golf Preserve, the 2015 and ’16 CGA Mid-Amateur Player of the Year who carded three birdies on Friday. Also at 70 at Pete Mangold of Columbine Country Club, who recently qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur (as did Lindstrom), 2016 CGA Senior Player of the Year Robin Bradbury of Walnut Creek, Michael Slutzky of Cherry Hills Country Club and Shawn Sutton of Elmwood Golf Course. Slutzky eagled the 527-yard first hole on Friday and played the par-5s in 4 under par.

Among those at 71 are Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club, the 2007 Mid-Am champion.

The 84-man field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after Saturday’s second round. Among those who will have to rally to stick around for Sunday’s final round is Humerickhouse, who needed to birdie his final two holes on Friday to shoot 80.

The Mid-Amateur is limited to players 25 and older.

2016’s Best https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/10/18/2016s-best/ Tue, 18 Oct 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/10/18/2016s-best/

They say that golf is a sport for all ages, and the 2016 CGA amateur players of the year certainly prove as much. The award winners range in age from a brand-new twentysomething to a player in his early 60s.

Kyler Dunkle of the Club at Pradera, who turned 20 just last month, has been named one of the youngest recipients of the CGA Les Fowler Player of the Year Award. Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club earned the Mid-Amateur POY honor for the second consecutive year. And Robin Bradbury, 60, of Heritage at Westmoor landed the Senior player award.

Also being honored by the CGA is rules official Mike Bureman, who receives the Jim Topliff Award as on-course official of the year for the third time since 2005. Bureman has been a mainstay as a volunteer rules official in Colorado since 1998.

Dunkle (pictured above), a former 5A state high school champion who transferred in the offseason from Colorado State to the University of Utah, took his game to another level in 2016.

“For me, it’s really cool to be the player of the year for Colorado,” the Denver native said recently. “This summer, I was able to relax and enjoy the game a little, whereas in the past I stressed myself.”

The highlight of the year for Dunkle was not only qualifying for the U.S. Amateur for the second consecutive year — he was medalist by four shots at Fort Collins Country Club — but advancing to the round of 16 at a national championship which features a starting field of 312. A year after rounds of 86-85 at the event left him in 311th place in the stroke-play portion of the tournament, Dunkle finished 41st in stroke play in August at Oakland Hills in Michigan. Then he won two matches before falling in the round of 16 of arguably the world’s top amateur championship. It marks the second straight year a Coloradan has made it to the Sweet 16 in the U.S. Am, after the University of Colorado’s David Oraee did likewise in 2015.

In CGA championships this year, Dunkle made it to the quarterfinals of the CGA Match Play and finished 11th in the CGA Amateur. He won the CGA Western Chapter title and placed second with his dad, Jason, in their title defense at the CGA Parent/Child.

In the college ranks, Dunkle has posted three top-10 individual finishes so far this calendar year — one with CSU and two in Utah’s first three tournaments of this season.

Dunkle is the ninth college-age golfer in the last 10 years to be named the CGA’s Player of the Year, with the exception being Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs in 2014.

Thayer, meanwhile, becomes the second golfer to be honored in back-to-back years as the CGA’s Mid-Amateur Player of the Year, joining Keith Humerickhouse (2012 and ’13).

Also for the second straight year, Thayer (left) finished runner-up to Jon Lindstrom in the CGA Mid-Amateur after Thayer prevailed in 2014. And in open-age-division CGA championships, Thayer placed 11th in the CGA Amateur and made it to the round of 32 of the CGA Match Play.

At his first U.S. Mid-Amateur, Thayer finished 45th in the stroke-play portion of the event, earning a spot in match play, where he lost in the round of 64. Thayer also advanced to the second stage of the two-stage U.S. Open qualifying process.

He earned an invitation to represent Colorado in the USGA Men’s State Team Championship, but couldn’t participate this year.

Bradbury (left) went the first six decades of his life without qualifying for a USGA championship, but broke the ice at the age of 60 when he shared medalist honors as Fox Hollow Golf Course hosted a qualifier for the U.S. Senior Amateur. And Bradbury took it a step beyond that as he finished 48th in the stroke-play portion of the national tournament and landed a spot in match play, where he exited in the round of 64.

Bradbury also secured low senior amateur honors at the Rocky Mountain Open, finished 16th in the CGA Senior Amateur and advanced to the round of 16 at the CGA Senior Match Play. He placed eighth in the CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play.

Polk (pictured), a three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, eagled the par-5 14th hole and added four birdies to go along with two bogeys on Monday. He shot a 5-under-par 31 on the back nine.

Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club shares second place in the 60-plus age division — at 70 — with Robin Bradbury of Heritage at Westmoor. Moore, a two-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, carded four birdies and two bogeys on Monday. Bradbury, who in recent days has both qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur and been the low senior amateur at the Rocky Mountain Open, also had four birdies and two bogeys in the opening round.

The group at 72 includes Colorado Golf Hall of Famer John Olive of The Broadmoor Golf Club, David Merritt of Meridian Golf Club and Robert Bulthaup of Valley Country Club.

In the 70-plus tournament, Don Alley of Antler Creek Golf Course and David Farabaugh of Broadlands Golf Course share the lead at 3-under-par 69. Alley recorded six birdies and overcame two 6s on his card. Farabaugh eagled the second hole (his 11th) and added two birdies.

Two back of the co-leaders, in third place, is Roger Gunderson of CommonGround Golf Course, the 2014 winner in this division.

Strong Field https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/08/19/strong-field/ Fri, 19 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/08/19/strong-field/ The CGA conducts — or helps conduct — golf championships for competitors of virtually all ages.

Just this month, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s Junior Series Championship for players 10 and under was held, and it wasn’t uncommon to see 7-year-olds competing.

Next week, the CGA will go to the other end of the spectrum, holding a championship for players potentially 10 times that old.

The fifth annual CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play, with separate age divisions for golfers 60 and older and 70 and older, will be contested Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 22-23) at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club (pictured) in Aurora.

Seventy-seven competitors are signed up for the event, including seven of the eight former champions in the 60+ and 70+ divisions. Those past champs include, in the 60+ competition, Robert Polk (2015), Kary Kaltenbacher (2014) and Bob Cloud (2013). And in the 70+ age group, every past winner is back: Kirk Miller (2015), Roger Gunderson (2014), Joe Morrill (2013) and Jim Collins (2012).

Add into the mix entrants Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Kent Moore and John Olive, 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur qualifier Robin Bradbury and recent CGA senior champion Harry Edwards, and the fields are formidable.

Each division will play 36 holes over the two days.

A Couple of Firsts https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/08/18/a-couple-of-firsts/ Thu, 18 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/08/18/a-couple-of-firsts/

It took a while — six decades to be precise — but Gary Albrecht of Denver and Robin Bradbury of Superior scored USGA breakthroughs on Thursday.

The two Coloradans, both now 60 years old, had never had the good fortune of qualifying for a USGA championship before. But they crossed that off their bucket lists at Fox Hollow Golf Course by punching their tickets to the U.S. Senior Amateur.

“One of my goals has been to get to a USGA event, so it’s a big deal for me,” Bradbury said. “It took 60 years to get here … but better late than never. I’m very excited about it.”

Said Albrecht: “It’s amazing, awesome. I’ve never qualified for an event like this.”

In fact, both went so far as to call what they did Thursday the top golf accomplishment of their lifetimes.

“Without question,” said Albrecht, who competed in a national long-drive competition at the 1982 PGA Championship.

“Clearly,” added Bradbury (left), who posted top-four finishes in both the CGA Senior Match Play and Senior Amateur in 2015.

Albrecht and Bradbury joined John Hornbeck of Saratoga, Wyo., in earning the three available U.S. Senior Amateur spots from Thursday’s qualifying tournament. (The qualifiers are pictured above, from left: Hornbeck, Albrecht and Bradbury.)

On a day when no one in the starting field of 55 matched or broke par, Albrecht, Bradbury and Hornbeck shared medalist honors at 1-over-par 72 with Jim Reynolds of Denver.

Then after Bradbury and Hornbeck secured the first two national berths with pars on the second hole of a playoff, Albrecht rebounded from a double bogey on extra hole No. 2 to earn the final Senior Am spot with a routine par. Reynolds, who survived a double bogey on the second playoff hole after losing his tee shot in a hazard, three-putted for bogey from 70 feet on the third extra hole to end up the odd man out in the four-person playoff. His 8-foot par putt just slipped by the right edge of the cup.

“I thought he made his putt.” said Albrecht. “I was fortunate.”

That means Albrecht, Bradbury and Hornbeck, 58, will be headed in mid-September to Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, where the U.S. Senior Am will be played Sept. 17-22.

This marks the second time this summer that Hornbeck has qualified in Colorado — via a playoff — for a USGA championship. He played in the U.S. Senior Open last week, missing the cut. Thanks to bouncing back from a bogey-bogey start on Thursday, this year will mark his second U.S. Senior Amateur and his eighth USGA championship overall.

“I’m getting tired of having to keep playing in them,” Hornbeck (left) said of playoffs in Colorado-based qualifiers. “But this is really special” to advance to two USGA championships in the same year. “The Senior Open was fantastic. I wasn’t even nervous or anything playing around with those (PGA Tour Champions) guys.”

Albrecht, who serves on the CGA board of governors and plays much of his golf at Ballyneal and CGA-owned CommonGround, went 2 under par for his last 10 holes of regulation on Thursday.

Bradbury, meanwhile, needed just 22 putts in regulation, then one-putted the second playoff hole for par after a poor drive.

“All that really means is I missed a lot of greens,” he said of his 22-putt round. “Like (on the second extra hole), a one-putt. That’s what I was doing all day today. Twenty-two putts is pretty crazy, but whatever it takes.”

The U.S. Senior Amateur is limited to players 55 and older.
