Sean Forey (left) of The Club at Rolling Hills, who twice has been low amateur at the Colorado Senior Open, grabbed the lead in the 62-and-older division, shooting a 1-over-par 73.

And Roger Gunderson of CommonGround Golf Course, who won both the CGA Senior Amateur and CGA Senior Match Play during the 1990s, opened with a 74 to take a two-shot advantage in the 72-plus “masters” division.

The final round of the 36-hole championship will be held on Thursday.

Forey made two birdies and three bogey on Wednesday to earn a one-shot lead.

Rick George of Castle Pines Golf Club sits in second place at 74, while Fred Brown of The Club at Carlton Woods near Houston carded a 75. Kary Kaltenbacher of Glenmoor Country Club, the 2014 champion, shares fourth place at 76 with Frank Hernandez of Highland Meadows Golf Course.

Defending champion Gary Albrecht of CommonGround started with a 78.

In the older age division, Gunderson recorded two birdies and four bogeys for his 74.

Shaun Donnellan of Maroon Creek Club was next best at 76, while Bob Sims of Clubcorp Colorado posted a 77.

Don Alley of Antler Creek Golf Course, winner of the older division the last two years, shot a 78 on Wednesday.

Matching Up https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/05/19/matching-up-4/ Fri, 19 May 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/05/19/matching-up-4/ Less than four years after a flood closed Coal Creek Golf Course for more than 21 months, the reconstructed and renovated Louisville-based facility will host the CGA Super-Senior Match Play Championship Monday through Thursday (May 22-25).

Thirty-two players — all at least 61 years old — will compete in the event. (Starting in 2017, the age requirement for each CGA super-senior championship will go up by one year each year through 2021, when no one younger than 65 will be allowed to play.)

One round of matches will be held each day, with the exception of Wednesday, when both the quarterfinals and semifinals are on top.

Jeff English of CommonGround Golf Course, who sank a 35-foot birdie putt on the 19th hole of last year’s final against Steve Scheffel, will defend his Super-Senior Match Play title. Scheffel is also in the field.

Likewise scheduled to compete are Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore, Robert Polk and Kary Kaltenbacher, winners of the last three CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play titles. Moore and Polk have won both the CGA Senior Amateur and Senior Match Play — as has fellow Super-Senior Match Play contestant Roger Gunderson, who has triumphed in this event twice.

This will mark the second year that the CGA Super-Senior Match Play and the Senior Match Play have been held at different sites.

CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/08/23/cga-super-senior-stroke-play/ Tue, 23 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/08/23/cga-super-senior-stroke-play/

Kent Moore wasted no time in checking off the next item on his CGA “to-do list.”

The Colorado Golf Hall of Famer, who has won virtually every CGA championship for which he’s been eligible, added the CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play title in his “rookie” season.

The 60-year-old from Cherry Hills Country Club overcame a two-stroke deficit Tuesday at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club in Aurora to prevail by one in the 60-and-over division. Former professional Don Alley of Antler Creek Golf Course in Falcon earned an eight-shot victory in the 70-and-over tournament.

Moore’s win gives him roughly 15 CGA titles, including ones in seven different individual championships — the Junior Match Play, Amateur, Match Play, Mid-Amateur, Senior Amateur, Senior Match Play and now the Super-Senior Stroke Play — an unprecedented feat in CGA competition. Moreover, he’s won CGA championships in five consecutive decades, starting with the 1973 CGA Junior Match Play at Flatirons Golf Course.

“I’ve always tried to be persistent,” Moore said. “There’s a lot better players in every tournament, but I was just persistent, and I really enjoy golf. And I somehow learned how to get it into the clubhouse reasonably well.”

Besides winning state championships individually, Moore (left and above) has teamed up with his son Steven (in the Father/Son) and with his wife Janet, a fellow Colorado Golf Hall of Famer (in the old CGA/CWGA Mixed Team) to prevail in two-person events.

In individual CGA competition, “It’s one of those things where I’ve finished second many times, but I’ve barely won each one of them once,” Moore said modestly.

This time around, the Centennial resident shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to post a 2-under 142 total. He made three birdies on the front nine — posting a 3-under 33 on that side — and three bogeys on the back in the final round. In the four-hole stretch from Nos. 4 through 7), Moore sank three putts of at least 15 feet.

Moore’s good start, combined with a rocky early patch by the other players in the lead group (Robert Polk and Robin Bradbury were both 4 over after five holes for the round), left Moore with the lead throughout the back nine.

“All of a sudden (after the opening holes) it was like, ‘Wow,'” Moore said of the turn of events.

Sean Forey of the Club at Rolling Hills matched the best score of the day — a 69 — to finish second, a stroke back of Moore. Forey hit 17 greens in regulation on Tuesday.

Colorado Golf Hall of Famer John Olive from The Broadmoor Golf Club (73 Tuesday) and 2015 champion and first-round leader Polk of Colorado Golf Club (77) tied for third place at 145.

“I thought if I shot 67 I’d have a shot,” said Forey after missing the target score by two. “John Olive and I talked about it and we laughed because we didn’t know if we had 67 in us. As it turns out, that would have been the number. It was fun. I thought I might get lucky, but between the three of those guys (in the lead group: Moore, Polk and Bradbury) they’re good players. But I came a lot closer than I thought. (Having been six back going into the final round), I’m happy.”

Indeed, Moore was worried about someone like Forey coming from outside of the lead group and rallying in a big way to claim the title.

“I’m thinking all along, ‘Somebody in (the clubhouse) shot 67 or something, and Robert and I were playing each other and we’re both going to get drilled.'” Moore said with a relieved smile afterward.

Among those who finished at 146 was Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Club, who made a hole-in-one to go with six birdies in Tuesday’s round of 69. Johnson aced the 177-yard 15th hole with a 7-iron for his 19th hole-in-one.

In the 70-plus division, Alley (left and below) carded two straight sub-par rounds — 69-71 — to run away with the title in his first time competing in the event. The Colorado Springs resident and former PGA professional made four birdies and three bogeys on Tuesday after having nine 3s on his card on Monday.

David Farabaugh of Broadlands Golf Course finished a distant second as a 79 on Tuesday left him at 148. Roger Gunderson, the 2014 winner in this division, came in third at 150, also after a 79.

It was the first statewide victory for the 71-year-old Alley since being reinstated as an amateur about 15 years ago. Alley was a club professional at a variety of Colorado courses over the years, including South Suburban, Sunset, Valley Hi, The Broadmoor and Gleneagle, serving as head professional at Sunset, Valley Hi and Gleneagle.

But he left the golf business in 1992 and “I almost totally quit playing for more than 10 years,” Alley said. “My wife and I bought a couple of jet skis (and boated) in Lake Powell and I got to know my family all over again. It was probably one of the best things I ever did. I started playing again 12-13 years ago, and I’m playing more now than I did then — and enjoying it more.

“I didn’t miss playing golf, but I missed the competition, I missed the guys, and I missed this (referring to tournaments like the Super-Senior Stroke Play). To me, this is what golf is all about.”

And winning on Tuesday was just gravy.

“I love it. I’m proud,” Alley said. “I haven’t got too many more years I’m going to be competitive in these things.”

Halfway Point https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/08/22/halfway-point/ Mon, 22 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/08/22/halfway-point/ Defending champion Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club shot a 4-under-par 68 and took a two-shot lead after Monday’s opening round of the CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play Championship at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club in Aurora.

Polk (pictured), a three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, eagled the par-5 14th hole and added four birdies to go along with two bogeys on Monday. He shot a 5-under-par 31 on the back nine.

Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore of Cherry Hills Country Club shares second place in the 60-plus age division — at 70 — with Robin Bradbury of Heritage at Westmoor. Moore, a two-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, carded four birdies and two bogeys on Monday. Bradbury, who in recent days has both qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur and been the low senior amateur at the Rocky Mountain Open, also had four birdies and two bogeys in the opening round.

The group at 72 includes Colorado Golf Hall of Famer John Olive of The Broadmoor Golf Club, David Merritt of Meridian Golf Club and Robert Bulthaup of Valley Country Club.

In the 70-plus tournament, Don Alley of Antler Creek Golf Course and David Farabaugh of Broadlands Golf Course share the lead at 3-under-par 69. Alley recorded six birdies and overcame two 6s on his card. Farabaugh eagled the second hole (his 11th) and added two birdies.

Two back of the co-leaders, in third place, is Roger Gunderson of CommonGround Golf Course, the 2014 winner in this division.

The tournament will conclude for both age divisions on Tuesday.

Strong Field https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/08/19/strong-field/ Fri, 19 Aug 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/08/19/strong-field/ The CGA conducts — or helps conduct — golf championships for competitors of virtually all ages.

Just this month, the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s Junior Series Championship for players 10 and under was held, and it wasn’t uncommon to see 7-year-olds competing.

Next week, the CGA will go to the other end of the spectrum, holding a championship for players potentially 10 times that old.

The fifth annual CGA Super-Senior Stroke Play, with separate age divisions for golfers 60 and older and 70 and older, will be contested Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 22-23) at Heritage Eagle Bend Golf Club (pictured) in Aurora.

Seventy-seven competitors are signed up for the event, including seven of the eight former champions in the 60+ and 70+ divisions. Those past champs include, in the 60+ competition, Robert Polk (2015), Kary Kaltenbacher (2014) and Bob Cloud (2013). And in the 70+ age group, every past winner is back: Kirk Miller (2015), Roger Gunderson (2014), Joe Morrill (2013) and Jim Collins (2012).

Add into the mix entrants Colorado Golf Hall of Famers Kent Moore and John Olive, 2016 U.S. Senior Amateur qualifier Robin Bradbury and recent CGA senior champion Harry Edwards, and the fields are formidable.

Each division will play 36 holes over the two days.

No Back-to-Backs https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/24/no-back-to-backs/ Tue, 24 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/24/no-back-to-backs/ The defending champions in both the CGA Senior Match Play and the CGA Super-Senior Match Play saw their hopes for repeats end on Tuesday.

Jay Gomer of Indian Peaks Golf Course defeated 2015 champion David Delich of The Broadmoor Golf Club, 1 up, in the round of 32 at the Senior Match Play at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont. Gomer led from after the first hole through the 18th.

And in a battle of former champs at the Super-Senior Match Play at West Woods Golf Club in Arvada, two-time winner Patrick Mooney of Colorado Golf Club defeated defending champ John Olive of The Broadmoor 1 up in the round of 16. Mooney birdied the par-3 18th hole for the victory.

Joining Delich (pictured) in exiting in the first round of matches at Fox Hill was 2013 champion Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Club, who dropped a 1-up match to John Ingram of Hiwan Golf Club. Former champs who advanced to the round of 16 were Ray Makloski of Pueblo Country Club, Guy Mertz of The Fox Hill Club and Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club.

Roger Gunderson of CommonGround Golf Course, a two-time Super-Senior champ who was runner-up each of the last two years, fell in the round of 16 at West Woods to fellow CommonGround player Jeffrey English, 3 and 1. That means that the only former champion who made it to the Super-Senior quarterfinals was Mooney.

Both the Seniors and the Super-Seniors will feature two rounds of match play on Wednesday.

The championship matches for both the Senior Match Play and the Super-Senior Match Play are scheduled for Thursday.

Meanwhile, at the CGA Senior Match Play, which is taking place simultaneously but at The Fox Hill Club in Longmont, Guy Mertz posted the low round — an even-par 70 — at his home course in the stroke-play qualifying round for the event.

Mertz, the 2010 CGA Senior Match Play champ, made two birdies and two bogeys on the day and earned the No. 2 seed in the match play portion of the championship, which starts on Tuesday. David Delich of The Broadmoor, a three-time winner of the event, will be the top seed in the 32-man bracket as the defending champion.

The only player besides Mertz to shoot under 76 Monday at Fox Hill was 2012 Senior Match Play winner Ray Makloski of Pueblo Country Club, who carded a 72.

At the Super-Senior Match Play at West Woods, Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Olive (pictured) defeated 32nd seed Howard Hankey of Foothills Golf Course 6 and 5 in the round of 32. Gunderson, a two-time Super-Senior champion and the runner-up the last two years, beat Cliff Damato of Meridian Golf Club 3 and 2. Another two-time champ, Patrick Mooney of Colorado Golf Club, advanced with a 6 and 4 victory over Robert Walker of Boulder Country Club.

Olive, Gunderson and Mooney will be compete in round-of-16 matches on Tuesday.

Chalk Up Another One https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/06/11/chalk-up-another-one/ Thu, 11 Jun 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/06/11/chalk-up-another-one/ John Olive has won club championships in five different decades at the Broadmoor Golf Club, starting in the 1970s. On a statewide basis, he first captured a title 38 years ago in the CGA Stroke Play, and he’s still going strong.

The Colorado Golf Hall of Famer proved that again on Thursday.

Just a couple of months shy of his 70th birthday, Olive defeated Roger Gunderson of CommonGround Golf Course, another winner of multiple CGA titles, 1 up in Thursday’s final of the CGA Super-Senior Match Play at the Club at Ravenna in Littleton.

Asked what another state title means to him, Olive said, “It means that it might be the last one. I don’t know how many more I’ll have to play in. Roger and I are very fortunate that we’re not only still upright but that we still do pretty well (golf-wise).”

Indeed, this Super-Senior Match Play reflected well on the older competitors. Even though anyone age 60 and up who meets the playing standard can compete, the final featured one guy 69 (Olive) and another 71 (Gunderson).

Olive two-putted for par from long range at No. 18, then watched as Gunderson missed a 10-foot birdie putt that would have forced extra holes.

“I breathed a sigh of relief,” Olive said. “We both played some very nice golf at times.”

In a match that was all square after 10, Olive had a 2-up advantage through 16 — after the players halved No. 15 with birdies. But Olive three-putted No. 17 for par — as Gunderson birdied — to force the match to the 18th hole.

The end result was a reverse of last year’s Super-Senior semifinals, when Gunderson defeated Olive. Gunderson has finished second in the last two Super-Senior Match Plays.

For Olive, it was his 11th individual CGA championship, but his first in the Super-Senior Match Play. He’s also won five Senior Stroke Plays, four Senior Match Plays and the 1977 Stroke Play. Olive also has the distinction of being the only amateur to prevail in the Colorado Senior Open (in 1999), and he’s won state senior amateur titles in California and Arizona.

Though Thursday’s final — which was played a day earlier than scheduled because of the threat of bad weather on Friday — went down to the wire, that was the exception for Olive this week. He won his previous matches by large margins: 5 and 4, 7 and 6, 4 and 3, and 7 and 6. The Air Force Academy graduate was 4 under par in his 7-and-6 semifinal victory Thursday morning over top-seeded Jim Reynolds of Bear Creek Golf Club.

“I had to focus,” said Olive, a seven-time CGA Senior Player of the Year. “I slipped back into tournament mode and was very pleased with how played. It was very nice.

“It feels very good to win again.”

Meanwhile, in the CGA Senior Match Play for competitors 50 and older, two former champions won two matches on Thursday to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

That includes 2014 winner Tom Musselman of Telluride Ski & Golf Club, who posted 3 and 2, and 6 and 5 victories on Thursday. And David Delich of the Broadmoor, who’s captured Senior Match Play titles in 2007 and ’11, prevailed 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals after his round-of-16 opponent withdrew.

In Friday morning’s semifinals, Musselman will face Brian Woody of the Ridge at Castle Pines North, and Delich will take on Robin Bradbury of Heritage at Westmoor, who defeated former champion Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club 2 up in the quarterfinals. Bradbury won the last three holes of that match, going par-birdie-birdie.

The winners of the semifinals will square off for the Senior Match Play title beginning late in the morning on Friday.

Friday was a long time coming for Tom Musselman.

Three-hundred and sixty-four days, to be exact.

But on Friday the 13th, the 54-year-old golfer from Telluride Ski & Golf Club finally earned the trophy that barely eluded him a year ago.

After being forced to settle for second place at the CGA Senior Match Play in 2013, Musselman made a very satisfying move up to the champion’s spot this week.

The former Kentucky state amateur champion won two matches Friday at the Pinery Country Club in Parker, claiming the Senior Match Play title with a 2-and-1 victory over Steve Bell of Denver Country Club.

“This means a lot just because I really focused and practiced over the winter to get ready for this campaign in early June,” Musselman said. “The whole goal was to try to get my game in shape for this event. I was aiming for this one.”

Another Tom, Tom Warren of Fossil Trace Golf Club, earned the CGA Senior-Senior Match Play championship for players 60 and older by defeating Roger Gunderson of Aurora Hills Golf Course, 2 and 1 in Friday’s final.

Musselman, who lost a 2-up final match to Harry Johnson of Eagle Ranch Golf Course on June 14, 2013, avenged that defeat in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

“I had so much confidence going into that final (last year), then all of a sudden I was 4 or 5 over par and get beat. It was disturbing,” said Musselman, a hotel developer from Kentucky who purchased a home in Telluride in 2000. “I knew where Harry was on the board this entire week, and I told him that. He is a competitor. We went at it. I was 3 under par just to beat him. That was my best-played match. I was psyched. I had everything dialed in — and I had to play well. I was watching all week and hoping we’d get to play.”

Then after ousting Larry Netherton of Highlands Ranch Golf Club 4 and 3 in Friday morning’s semifinals, Musselman never trailed in the title match.

Bell looked likely to square the match on the par-4 seventh after Musselman’s tee shot ended up against the trunk of a tree and he was in the front greenside bunker in three. But with Bell having a 5-foot par putt, Musselman holed out a 30-foot sand shot (left) for par, leading to a halve of the hole.

“All of a sudden I hole that damn thing out,” he said. “I know that kind of shook Steve up a little bit.”

Then Musselman won the eighth with a 6-foot birdie and the ninth with a par to go 3 up.

Bell cut the deficit to 1 down when Musselman made bogeys on 10 and 12. But Musselman birdied No. 13 with an up-and-down from the sand, made a 45-foot birdie putt on No. 16, and two-putted from 50 feet for par on No. 17 to claim the victory. Bell (left) lost despite birdies at Nos. 15 and 16, and a lipped-out birdie putt on 17.

“I felt good about most of the way I played, but I had a couple of shaggy-dog holes in the middle of the round that put me down a little bit,” Bell said. “I got a little adrenaline at the end and birdied 15 and 16 and I hit a really good putt on 17 that I thought was going to go. It feels a little bit better when you birdie two of the last three holes.”

In the Senior-Seniors, Warren (below) held the lead for most of the day against Gunderson, the 1998 CGA Senior Match Play champ who had knocked off Colorado Golf Hall of Famer John Olive in the semis. The 61-year-old Warren never trailed after making three consecutive birdies on Nos. 4-6. Still, things were all square after 14, but Warren won Nos. 15 and 17 with pars, the latter after Gunderson hit a shot out of bounds.

The win was especially satisfying considering Warren just got back into tournament golf three years ago after not playing competitively for about a decade.

“I used to play a lot of competitive golf and I took 10 years off and I forgot how much fun it was,” he said.

In his younger years, Warren qualified for two U.S. Junior Amateurs, losing to a young Texan named Ben Crenshaw in one match.

“He was a year older than me and he had a caddie and a coach and a little gallery,” Warren recalled. “I thought, ‘I better find myself another career.’ I just remember watching him hit it 50 yards past me and making 30 footers when I’m shaking on 3 footers.”

On Friday, the 70-year-old Gunderson was in decent shape until his tee shots suddenly went awry coming down the stretch.

“I hit a lot of good shots but I put myself into too many bad positions off the tee coming in,” he said. “I drove the ball really well all week until the last six or seven holes, then I couldn’t keep it on the planet.”

While Gunderson obviously would have like to have won another state title, making it to the super-senior final was an accomplishment by itself.

“I had no expectations coming in,” he said. “I have not been playing well. To get this far, I feel pretty fortunate.”
