Lanting (left) shot the only round in the 60s on Tuesday — a 3-under-par 69 — to post a 4-under 140 total for two days, good for a two-stroke victory. He finished round 2 with five birdies and two bogeys.

First-round leader and three-time champion Caine Fitzgerald of Meadow Hills Golf Course bogeyed two of his last three holes and finished second at 142 after closing with a 74.

Taking third place was University of Colorado men’s assistant coach and 2016 champion Pat Grady, who carded back-to-back 72s.

The top four finishers — Lanting, Fitzgerald, Grady and Jordan Gibbs of Denver — qualified for the National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship, set for Nov. 15-18 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Kent Denver Wins Record 9th CHSAA Golf Title https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/27/kent-denver-wins-record-9th-chsaa-golf-title/ Tue, 27 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/27/kent-denver-wins-record-9th-chsaa-golf-title/

Bob Austin helped put the Cherry Creek boys golf team in the record books, and he had a hand in removing the Bruins as well.

Austin played on two of Creek’s state title-winning teams — in 1970 and ’71 — as the Bruins went on to set the record for the most boys golf state team titles in Colorado, with eight.

But on Tuesday in the 3A state meet at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora, with Austin serving as the head coach of the host Kent Denver squad, the Sun Devils took sole possession of the aforementioned record, moving out of a tie with Cherry Creek.

Kent Denver (pictured celebrating) has now won state crowns nine times since 1999, and Austin has been the coach for eight of those nine — two in Class 4A and six in 3A. (With its sixth win in the last seven years in 5A on Tuesday, Regis Jesuit joined Creek with eight state championships.)

And to double the fun for Kent on Tuesday, Sun Devils junior Oliver Jack (left) won a playoff to claim the 3A individual championship.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Austin said. “I’m really choked up. I really wanted this for these kids. We finished second the last two years. I wanted to get over that hump. The kids, I couldn’t be prouder of them. They played awesome. It was really fun. This might be the sweetest (state title) of all.”

And that was just one of the three state tournaments that concluded on Tuesday around the state. The others were just as notable:

— In the 4A meet at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale, the individual title also was settled in a playoff, this one denying defending champion Jackson Solem of Silver Creek from becoming just the fifth two-time Colorado boys state high school champion since 1995. The first-round leader, junior Luke Trujillo of Discovery Canyon, parred the second playoff hole to defeat Solem and claim the title. And Trujillo helped Discovery Canyon win a boys state golf team championship for the first time. Three-time defending champ Valor Christian was third.

— In the 5A tournament at Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction, senior Kyle Pearson of Highlands Ranch put on a clinic as rounds of 66-67 gave him a 9-under-par 133 total and a six-stroke victory over Davis Bryant of Eaglecrest. Moreover, Pearson made a hole-in-one Tuesday en route to the title, acing the 136-yard 15th hole with a gap wedge. And, as noted earlier, Regis made it six 5A team titles in seven years. And perhaps the most remarkable thing about that is that each of the last two victories have come by one-stroke margins.

Back at 3A, the two players who finished tied for second in the state tournament last year were the ones in a playoff on Tuesday: Jack and Ivan Richmond of Estes Park. Richmond birdied the 17th hole in regulation to pull even, and both players bogeyed No. 18, with Jack three-putting.

But on the par-5 556-yard playoff hole, Jack hit his drive 30 yards beyond where his ball traveled on the same hole earlier Tuesday, and he had just a 7-iron for his approach into the green. Richmond, meanwhile, pulled his tee shot into a hazard and needed four shots to get to the front fringe. He three-putted from there for a double bogey. Jack, meanwhile, sank a 4-foot birdie for the victory.

“This means a lot,” said Jack, a 16-year-old who has already verbally committed to play his college golf at the University of Colorado. “A state championship is something I always wanted to win. Words can’t describe the feeling. Nothing means more to me than winning this. And it’s great for the team (too).”

Richmond (left), meanwhile, was thinking of what might have been.

“Obviously the tee shot (in the playoff) wasn’t the greatest,” he said. “Nerves and all that stuff were just going through my brain. It was bad.

“Obviously I wanted to win here. It would have been pretty special.”

Jack shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday — not counting his playoff birdie — and finished at even-par 144. Richmond closed with a 71 to get to that same total.

“I was really excited for Oliver,” Austin said. “I thought Oliver was the best player coming in, and I told him that. And I thought if we were going to win, the best player needs to win individually — and he did. He’s such an unbelievable talent and such a great kid

“(Winning both titles) was a huge thrill. The last two hours, I’m probably more nervous than I’ve ever been in my life.”

Joining Jack in the top 10 individually for Kent Denver on Tuesday were sophomore Jackson Klutznick (148, fourth place) and freshman Ben Zimmerman (153, 10th place). Rounding out the Sun Devil team was senior Jack Friedman (162, 25th place).

Placing third individually on Tuesday was Peak to Peak’s Ethan Tartaglia, who posted a 72 for a 146 total. Yale Kim of the Dawson School, the 2014 champion, shared fourth place with Klutznick at 148.

Kent Denver, which finished at 13-over-par 445, had a battle to win its eighth team title since 2006. Defending champion Peak to Peak took second place at 448.

In the 5A tournament, the team race was even closer as Regis Jesuit’s 10-over-par 436 total just edged Highlands Ranch by one.

Individually, Pearson was the only player to post two rounds in the 60s at Bookcliff. Besides his hole-in-one eagle, he made four birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday. For the two days, he racked up 10 birdies plus the eagle.

Bryant, a U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier last year, was very much in contention through 10 holes Tuesday as he had made a birdie and nine pars and stood 6 under overall. But he went 3 over par the rest of the way, shot 73, and had to settle for runner-up with a 3-under 139 total.

First-round leader Nick Caldwell of Rock Canyon was the only other player to finish under-par for two rounds, in his case at 140, good for third place. He made an eagle and a birdie on Tuesday, but also seven bogeys in a round of 75.

In 4A, Solem rallied from four behind going into the day to force a playoff in his bid for two straight individual championships. But after both players parred the first extra hole, Trujillo made a par on the second playoff hole to prevail as Solem missed his 6-foot par attempt. Both players finished at 4-under-par 140 overall, with Solem closing with a bogey-free 69 (though his blemish-free day ended on the second playoff hole) and Trujillo a 73.

Trujillo led by three strokes with four holes left in regulation, but a double bogey on 15 and a bogey on 18 forced the playoff.

Cole Krantz of Windsor was also in the thick of the title race, but back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 led to a third-place finish, one out of the playoff. Krantz played his first seven holes in 4 under par on Tuesday, making an eagle on the 325-yard seventh hole.

Discovery Canyon ran away with the 4A team title. Its 6-over-par 438 total was 15 strokes better than runner-up Montrose.

Back-to-Back https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/25/back-to-back-3/ Sun, 25 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/25/back-to-back-3/

As Herman’s Hermits sang a half-century ago in one of their hit songs, “second verse, same as the first.”

In the case of the CGA Mid-Amateur Championship the last two years, the second “verse” at least was remarkably close to the same as the first.

Not only did Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood Country Club win the CGA Mid-Am by four strokes for the second straight year on Sunday, but the top four finishers were the same in 2016 as they were in 2015. In fact, they were almost in the exact same order, with the only difference being Steve Irwin tying for second this year and placing third alone in 2015.

Lindstrom, the 49-year-old Broomfield resident who previously won the Mid-Amateur in 2008 and ’15, became just the third player to have captured the championship at least three times, joining Rick DeWitt (seven victories) and Keith Humerickhouse (four).

And Lindstrom became the fourth player to have won back-to-back CGA Mid-Ams, following Rick Garber (1991-92) and DeWitt (1999-2002) and Humerickhouse (2010-13), who each captured four straight titles. (Lindstrom is pictured above receiving the trophy Sunday from CGA board member Buddy Noel, who plays out of Saddle Rock Golf Course, where the Mid-Am was held.)

“Now that you mention it, it’s kind of cool (being a three-time winner of the event),” said Lindstrom (left). “It’s a big tournament for me. I enjoy coming out and playing it each year. The fact that I can still compete pushing 50 (years old) is fun.”

This time, Lindstrom led wire-to-wire at Saddle Rock, shooting rounds of 71-70-73 for a 2-under-par 214 total. Two-time winner Irwin, who also plays out of Lakewood CC, shared second place at 218 with 2014 champion Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club. Irwin closed with a 73 and Thayer a 76 after playing his last eight holes in 3 over par.

Ryan Axlund of Inverness Golf Club placed fourth at 220 after carding a 72 on Sunday.

“Last year I felt like I had a definite advantage because (the Mid-Am) was at my home course at Lakewood,” Lindstrom said. “I hadn’t played out here (at Saddle Rock) in 10-12 years, so to come to a completely different style of golf course (and win), it proves that my game travels. That’s important to me.”

Thayer (left) got within two strokes of Lindstrom when the latter bogeyed three straight holes on the back nine (Nos. 12-14), the last two via three-putt greens. But Lindstrom gave himself a more comfortable cushion when he made a two-putt birdie on the par-5 17th. He finished the day with three birdies and four bogeys.

“I was going for pins, playing smart aggressive golf,” said Thayer, who has finished first, second and second the last three years at the Mid-Am. “I just couldn’t covert any birdies. If I put a little more pressure on him … but it was never quite within reach. I tried.

“I got beat by a better player today, no doubt. He deserved to win.”

Like Thayer, Irwin has been in the hunt in this event on a regular basis in recent years. Sunday marked his third top-four finish in the last four years.

“It’s always nice to be somewhat in contention,” said Irwin, the 2004 CGA Player of the Year. “But it was a pretty frustrating week for me. I had a hard time reading the greens and I didn’t make many putts at all. The ball just wasn’t disappearing as quickly as I wanted it to.

“Jon obviously is playing some good golf. He’s proven that over the last few years. I feel proud to represent Lakewood (Country Cub) and I know he feels the same. We have a good core group of guys out there.”

Earlier this summer, Lindstrom (left) had been frustrated with his game. But seeing a sports psychologist in recent weeks has helped him, and it apparently paid some dividends at Saddle Rock.

“A good friend of mine is Robin Bradbury (who recently played in the U.S. Senior Amateur),” Lindstrom said. “He and I play a lot of golf together. He started seeing a sports psychologist and I started seeing her as well. A lot of it is reminding you of things you probably already know — but maybe having a fresh look at it. That’s been a significant help. To get out of the pattern of working on my swing, working on technique — more seeing it and hitting it. It doesn’t always work, but it worked out this week. The first nine holes the first day where I had six birdies, that was that process working to a T.

“It clears my mind. It’s really easy when you start hitting it bad or hitting a bad putt to analyze the technical reason why you did that. And that does no good. During my three bogeys in a row (on Sunday), two of those were three-putts. A month ago, I probably would have let that spiral out of control. But instead, once I was done with it, I honestly forgot about it. Even though one was a pull and one was a push, I didn’t adjust my stroke. I still just picked a spot and hit it. It’s more clearing my head than anything else.”

Lindstrom will quickly turn around from his Mid-Am win to represent Colorado in the USGA Men’s State Team Championship Wednesday through Friday in Birmingham, Ala. Also on the Colorado team are Humerickhouse and 2015 CGA Match Play champion Nick Nosewicz, who tied for fifth place on Sunday.

The Mid-Amateur is limited to players 25 and older.

Repeat in the Works? https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/24/repeat-in-the-works/ Sat, 24 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/24/repeat-in-the-works/ Four players who have won individual CGA championships occupy the top four spots after Saturday’s second round of the CGA Mid-Amateur at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.

Defending champion Jon Lindstrom (pictured) of Lakewood Country Club kept the lead with a 2-under-par 70 that left him at 3-under 141 overall heading into Sunday’s final round.

Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club, the 2014 Mid-Am champ, trails by one after tying for the best round of the tournament, a 4-under-par 68. Also firing 68 on Saturday was 2015 CGA Match Play winner Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course, who shares third place at 145 with Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club. Irwin, a two-time Mid-Am champ, carded a 70 on Saturday.

Lindstrom and Irwin are each attempting to become just the third player to win at least three CGA Mid-Amateur Championships.

Lindstrom, who along with Nosewicz and Keith Humerickhouse will represent Colorado in next week’s USGA Men’s State Team Championship, made three birdies and one bogey on Saturday.

Thayer, meanwhile, racked up seven birdies in round 2, along with three bogeys. Nosewicz and Irwin each made five birdies on Saturday, with Irwin playing his final 12 holes in 5 under par.

The field was cut from 84 to the top 40 players and ties after 36 holes, with the 43 golfers who stand at 157 or better advancing to Sunday.

Lindstrom, Thayer and Nosewicz will tee off for the final round at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday.

The Mid-Amateur is limited to players 25 and older.

CGA Mid-Amateur https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/23/cga-mid-amateur/ Fri, 23 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/23/cga-mid-amateur/ Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood Country Club, attempting to become just the third player to win at least three CGA Mid-Amateur Championships, shot a 1-under-par 71 and took a two-stroke lead after Friday’s opening round of 2016 tournament at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.

The defending champion, who also won the Mid-Am title in 2008, was the only player to match or break par in very windy conditions during the first round.

Lindstrom (pictured) had a stellar start to his round, making six birdies in his first seven holes (with a bogey thrown in at No. 3) and shooting a 5-under-par 31 on the front nine. But he gave some back down the stretch, playing his final six holes in 4 over par and closing with a double bogey.

The only players with more CGA Mid-Amateur titles than Lindstrom — and fellow Lakewood CC member Steve Irwin — are Rick DeWitt (seven wins) and Keith Humerickhouse (four).

Jeff Slupe of Highland Meadows Golf Course sits in second place after round 1, using an eagle-birdie stretch on his 10th and 11 holes (Nos. 1 and 2 at Saddle Rock) to shoot a 73. Slupe finished with an eagle, three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.

Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club, the 2014 champion, is among four players who share third place at 74. Also at that figure are Andrew Tapia of The Ridge at Castle Pines North, Barry Erwin of Murphy Creek Golf Course and Mark Zbrzeznj of Eagle Vail Golf Club. Erwin overcame a quaduple-bogey 8 on the 10th hole.

Irwin, who won his two Mid-Amateur titles in 2003 and ’05, opened with a 75 and is tied for seventh place.

All told, seven former champions are in the field for this event, which is limited to players 25 and older.

The original 84-man field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after 36 holes. The 54-hole championship will conclude on Sunday.

Former Champs Galore https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/22/former-champs-galore/ Thu, 22 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/22/former-champs-galore/ Seven former champions, including 2015 winner Jon Lindstrom, are scheduled to compete this weekend at the 30th CGA Mid-Amateur Championship, hosted by Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora, a former site of the Colorado Open.

The 54-hole event for players 25 and older will run Friday through Sunday (Sept. 23-25).

Lindstrom will be seeking his third CGA Mid-Am title, having also won in 2008. He competed in the U.S. Mid-Amateur earlier this month and will be part of the Colorado squad for next week’s USGA Men’s State Team Championship in Birmingham, Ala.

In fact, all three members of that Colorado team will play at Saddle Rock. Keith Humerickhouse won a record-tying four straight CGA Mid-Ams starting in 2010, and Nick Nosewicz claimed the CGA Match Play title last year.

Joining Lindstrom and Humerickhouse as past champions in the field at Saddle Rock will be Chris Thayer (2014), Robert Polk (2007), Steve Irwin (2003 and ’05), Chris Carlson (2004) and Mike Glaesel (1998).

Also entered are Alex Kephart, who recently qualified for the 2017 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball; 2016 CGA Senior Match Play champ Jeff Oneth; and Robin Bradbury, who advanced to match play his month at the U.S. Senior Amateur.

The original 84-man field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after 36 holes.

Making a Little History https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/05/27/making-a-little-history/ Tue, 27 May 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/05/27/making-a-little-history/

Hannah Wood and her dad, Don, won’t soon forget how they spent Father’s Day last year.

Wood, an alternate for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links after the qualifying tournament, received a phone call that Sunday notifying her that she had a spot in the national championship.

The only problem was, they were in Centennial, and the championship was in Norman, Okla., and competition was starting the next day.

The Woods packed up, hopped in the car about midday on Father’s Day and arrived in Norman about 11:30 p.m. Hannah didn’t have an opportunity to play a practice round, though Don checked out the course in the morning before her afternoon tee time.

Despite the disadvantage, Hannah finished 34th out of the 156-player field in stroke play, earning a spot in match play before losing in the first round.

It was all a fun and exciting experience, but this year, there will be no need to rush around at the last minute.

That’s because the recent Arapahoe High School graduate earned medalist honors on Tuesday in the national Women’s Public Links qualifier at Saddle Rock Golf Course in Aurora.

In fact, Wood left nothing to chance in that regard as her 2-under-par 70 was the best score of the day by a whopping five shots.

“It’s the best feeling in the world,” she said of qualifying for the Publinks again. “Honestly, I love the idea of the Publinks. It’s my favorite tournament by far. And I would love to go to Washington. It’s always been on my bucket list. Especially since this is the last Publinks, it means the world just to qualify.”

Wood, who’s been part of the first two classes of the Hale Irwin Elite Player Program at CommonGround Golf Course, will be going to her fifth USGA championship — all coming in the last two years. She’s also made it to a USGA Women’s State Team, where she finished 11th individually last year, a U.S. Girls’ Junior, a U.S. Women’s Amateur and the 2013 Publinks.

This year’s Women’s Publinks is scheduled for July 14-19 at The Home Course in Dupont, Wash.

Wood, a University of Oklahoma signee, was one of four qualifiers on Tuesday at Saddle Rock. Also advancing to the national championship are three players who carded 75s: Taylor Dorans of Erie, Mikayla Tatman of Fort Collins, and University of Denver golfer Elyse Smidinger of Crofton, Md. (The four qualifiers are pictured above. From left: Smidinger, Wood, Tatman and Dorans.)

Twenty-two players entered the qualifying tournament, though three withdrew beforehand.

Wood, winner of the last two CJGA Tournament of Champions, was coming off a disappointing ending of her high school career at last week’s 5A state tournament. She birdied the final hole to get into a playoff, but three putted the first sudden-death hole to finish second to Rock Canyon’s Michelle Romano.

“I would much rather play in a USGA event,” Wood said. “Of course, I wanted to win state high school, but this is quite the honor. (USGA championships) are the best tournaments in golf. I adore the USGA tournaments and how they set them up, and the courses are just amazing.”

On Tuesday, the 18-year-old (left) made five birdies and three bogeys, finishing on a high note with birdies on 17 and 18. Coincidentally, she also won a high school tournament at Saddle Rock this year with a score of 70, though it was set up much more difficult on Tuesday.

“I had three 5-footers for birdie,” Wood noted. “My ball-striking was pretty good. It was solid — a few birdies, a few bogeys and I just hung in there.”

While all of Tuesday’s other qualifiers have competed in USGA championships before, Tatman will be making her debut in Washington, which will be the site of the final Women’s Publinks after a 38-year run. Also in July, the last men’s U.S. Amateur Public Links will be held. The USGA announced last year that it is discontinuing both championships.

“This is my first USGA event that I’ll be going to,” said Tatman, a redshirt junior-to-be on the Colorado State women’s golf team. “I really wanted this one. I’m very pleased.

“I was one stroke away last year (from a potential playoff at this qualifier). I’ve been close but I’ve never been able to break through. It doesn’t matter if it’s the U.S. Women’s Open or the Amateur or the Publinks; it’s still a national tournament. I’m just ecstatic right now. I really am. It’s special, too, to be able to go to the last one. We’re going to have fun, that’s for sure.”

Tatman, the 2011 CWGA Junior Match Play runner-up, had to dig herself out of a hole Tuesday to qualify. She was 4 over par through three holes, having gone double bogey, bogey, bogey. But she went 1 under the rest of the way and made a 25-foot birdie on No. 18.

“I’ve really been working on mentally staying in it,” she said. “It’s not ever over until your last putt drops on 18. I just kept that mindset and it worked out.”

Tatman, who attended Silver Creek High School in Longmont and played golf for Skyline, was happy to come through not only for herself but in honor of her dad, Lloyd, who passed away in 2012 after battling cancer.

“I’ve just been trying to come out here and play the best I can for him,” Mikayla Tatman said. “So this is very special.”

Dorans, a University of Wyoming golfer who posted four top-six showings in the 4A state tournament while attending Broomfield High, will be going to her first U.S. Women’s Publinks. However, she did play in the 2012 U.S. Girls’ Junior.

On Tuesday, Dorans overcame a double bogey on the third hole to punch her ticket to nationals.

“It’s really special (to qualify) because it’s the last one,” the 19-year-old sophomore-to-be said. “Being able to represent the public courses is an honor. (Qualifying for a USGA event) is unbelievable. They treat you so well and the courses they set up for you are great. It’s like, all your hard work has paid off.”

Dorans, winner of the 2011 CJGA Junior Series Championship, was happy with her solid performance Tuesday after she had struggled some in recent rounds.

“It’s good to have a good round under my belt,” she said. “I felt really good about today, especially coming off the last couple of rounds I had — which weren’t exactly what I wanted them to be. Playing solid today, with a lot of pars, felt really good.”

In her first Women’s Publinks qualifier, Smidinger had to sweat out advancing after being in very good position two-thirds of the way through her round on Tuesday. She was 1 under par through 12 holes, but bogeyed her next four before righting the ship to close with two pars.

“It’s exciting to go there and represent my school as well,” she said of DU. “And we’ll be a part of history in the last one, which is kind of exciting. I’m looking forward to it.”

This will be Smidinger’s fourth USGA championship, and she has the distinction of being one of the rare 64th seeds to beat out a medalist at the U.S. Women’s Amateur. That was in 2011, when she prevailed in a 5 players-for-1 spot playoff that earned her the final spot in match play. She then defeated co-medalist Jihee Kim in her first match before falling in the round of 32.

“That was a lot of fun,” said the two-time Maryland state high school champion. “Hopefully I can make it a little higher on the leaderboard (this time at the Publinks) so I don’t have to beat the No. 1 seed.”
