Glenn Workman has already put together a stellar summer, golf-wise, but when it comes to success, the more the merrier.

The University of Wyoming golfer, who plays out of Desert Hawk at Pueblo West, has put himself in position to add the CGA Amateur Championship title to his list of accomplishments this year as he will take a three-stroke lead into Sunday’s final round at the Sonnenalp Club in Edwards.

On a day in which just one player — Isaac Petersilie of Colorado Springs Country Club — shot in the 60s — Workman finished Saturday’s round where he started it, up by three. The 21-year-old two-putted for birdie on the final hole to shoot a 1-over-par 72, which left him with a 4-under-par 209 total.

So far this summer, Workman (left) has won the Wyoming State Amateur, finished low amateur in the Wyoming State Open and runner-up in the Wyoming State Match Play, won the Springer tournament in Colorado Springs and placed second in the Pueblo city championship.

“My game, I feel like, has always been there, but I’ve approached the game differently this summer,” Workman said. “I’ve stuck to a mental process I have, focused on working hard, putting golf first and being competitive every time I play — every time I practice, even. It’s made a big difference in my game. I’ve stayed more focused than I ever have on golf. My game is good because I’ve been working harder at it.

“I’ve been treating golf like a job this summer.”

And the approach seems to be paying off again this week. Through 54 holes, Workman has made two eagles and 11 birdies.

“It’s been good to see how I’ve been playing this summer. I’ve been solid,” he said. “I’ve just got to keep up the streak — just keep playing like I know how to play.

“Three shots is nothing in golf; it’s really not. So much can happen tomorrow. I’m going to play hard and focus on what I’ve been doing, like the last few days.”

Only one player besides Workman is under par through 54 holes at Sonnenalp. Cole Nygren (left) of Colorado National Golf Club, who finished fifth in the CGA Amateur last year, overcame a lost-ball double bogey on the 11th hole to shoot an even-par 71 on Saturday. The recent Cal Poly graduate, who is playing in one of his final amateur tournaments, stands at 1-under 212 after a day which included four birdies, two bogeys and a double.

“I’m playing pretty conservatively,” the 23-year-old said. “I can be a little more aggressive. I hit a lot of drivers during the practice round and it’s a very scoreable golf course if you can hit driver accurately. You have a lot of short shots in. But I haven’t hit a single driver so far in the tournament. I’ve hit 2-iron, 3-iron or 4-iron off pretty much every tee. If I need to push a little (on Sunday), especially on the par-5s, I’m going to pull the driver out. We’ll just have to see how everyone is playing.”

As far as catching Workman on Sunday, “Obviously it depends on how Glenn plays,” Nygren said. “If he goes out with a three-shot lead and shoots at least a few under, it’s going to take something pretty special to catch up to him. But each one of my rounds could have easily been 3 or 4 under par.”

Three local college players checked in at even-par 213 through three rounds: Colorado State University’s Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club, the University of Denver’s Petersilie, and the University of Northern Colorado’s Sam Marley, who plays out of South Suburban Golf Course.

Petersilie carded six birdies and three bogeys in his 3-under-par 68, while Staiano had a 71 and Marley a 72.

The Sonnenalp course has proven relatively difficult all week, but Saturday moreso than the previous days. The greens were so fast on a couple of holes that more than one player putted his ball off a green.

“If you don’t put it in the right spot on this course, these greens are going to kick your butt,” Staino said. “If you’re above the hole at all, good luck.”

A couple of weeks ago, Staiano (left) finished eighth overall at the CoBank Colorado Open, earning low-amateur honors by seven strokes. But he said his game hasn’t been quite as sharp this week.

“I’ve been sort of battling all week,” the two-time U.S. Amateur qualifier said. “I just don’t have my best stuff out there. … Shoulda, woulda, coulda, but it could have been super low (on Saturday). My putting and chipping let me down. I know 71 doesn’t look bad, but it could have been better for sure.

“To see that I can have my ‘C’ game and still be able to shoot (71) on a course where everybody seems to be struggling a little bit, there’s definitely positives to take from it. Obviously I’m not anywhere out of the tournament, for sure.”

In all, eight players will go into the final round within five strokes of Workman.

The lead group of Workman, Nygren and Petersilie will tee off for Sunday’s final round at 9:10 a.m., while Staiano, Marley and Trevor Glen of Legacy Ridge Golf Course will tee it up at 9 a.m.

Back for More https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/14/back-for-more-7/ Thu, 14 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/14/back-for-more-7/ Charlie Soule of Denver, who has recorded four top-10 finishes in the CoBank Colorado Open, will have an opportunity to add to his record next week.

Soule (left) earned medalist honors in Thursday’s third of four Colorado Open qualifiers, leading the way for 14 players who advanced to the championship, including seven from Colorado.

Soule, a 32-year-old former low-amateur in the Colorado Open, made eight birdies and shot a 7-under-par 64 Thursday at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

Other Coloradans who advanced to the Open — set for July 21-24 at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in northeast Denver — were Bryan Hackenberg of Thornton (67), Jacob Lestishen of Lone Tree (68), Braden Baer of Westminster (69), amateurs Sam Marley of Centennial and Pierce Aichinger of Cherry Hills Village (both 69), and Jason Johnson of Westminster (70, then prevailed in a playoff).

Joining them in qualifying Thursday were James Vargas of Windermere, Fla. (67), Ty Capps of Palm Coast, Fla. (67), Paul Imondi of Tustin, Calif. (68), Daniel Balin of Rockville, Md. (68), Brett Paquet of Chandler, Ariz. (69), Charlie Kern of Mercer Island, Wash. (69) and Robert Bell of Pierz, Minn. (70)

One player who didn’t advance was Johnny DelPrete of Palm City, Fla., who shot a 72 while his girlfriend, Jessica Korda, caddied for him on Thursday. Korda is currently sits No. 24 in the women’s world golf rankings.

Hitting Pay-dirt https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/05/03/hitting-pay-dirt/ Sun, 03 May 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/05/03/hitting-pay-dirt/

Sam Marley won his second CGA championship in less than 10 months, and he’s still only 18 years old. Meanwhile, James Richardson claimed his first CGA title at age 37.

Whatever the case, the teammates from South Suburban Golf Course were both overjoyed to strike pay-dirt Sunday at the CGA Four-Ball Championship at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

“I’m 37. I should have been doing this (winning titles) when I was 18 — and I had my chances back then,” Richardson said. “This is a big one for sure.”

Marley and Richardson (pictured above), both of Centennial, reeled off five consecutive birdies Sunday in the better-ball event and chalked up nine overall in a bogey-free final round. After trailing by three entering the day, they closed with a 9-under-par 63 for a 21-under-par 195 total for three rounds.

Marley, who recently completed his freshman year on the University of Northern Colorado golf team, won the CGA Junior Match Play last July. Earning a second CGA title in less than a year was a nice bonus, especially at his young age.

“It’s exciting, definitely,” said Marley, an Arapahoe High School graduate and the son of South Suburban head professional Todd Marley. “The way we played today was pretty cool. But both of these wins are special.”

Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club, who competed in the 2011 U.S. Open, and Pat Diaz of Meridian Golf Club, who won the Four-Ball with Irwin in 2004, came in second Sunday at 197 after finishing with a 65 that featured nine birdies. (Irwin, in red shorts, and Diaz are pictured at left.)

Nick Nosewicz and Brian Richmeier of Meadow Hills Golf Course, who didn’t make a bogey for the first 36 holes and led after rounds 1 and 2, carded four bogeys Sunday and settled for a 70 and a 199 total, good for a share of third place.

“We were slow out of the gate and stumbled a bit, but we fought back,” said Richmeier, who with Nosewicz led by three going into the final day. “We’ll get ’em back next time.”

Joining Nosewicz and Richmeier at 199 were 2014 CGA Mid-Amateur champion Chris Thayer and Jadon Wiens of Bear Creek Golf Club, who closed with two consecutive 65s, and 2013 U.S. Amateur qualifier Kyle Danford of Fort Collins Country Club and Dave Johnson of Collindale Golf Club, who shot 67 on Sunday.

Though the 63 Marley and Richardson posted on Sunday was the second-best of the day — behind the 62 of 2014 champ Jared Bickling and teammate Stephen Baxter — the golfers from South Suburban initially thought it might not be good enough for the title.

“We knew it was a good round, but I didn’t think it was good enough to win it outright,” Richardson said. “Things came easy today, but my mentality was always more, more, more.”

Both teammates contributed significantly on Sunday as Marley made six birdies and Richardson four. But Richardson said Marley’s play during Saturday’s 68 made the difference.

“We would have never been in this position if he hadn’t played the way he did yesterday,” Richardson noted. “I didn’t make a single birdie and was hitting it everywhere. He made six birdies and we shot 4 under. If he doesn’t play good yesterday, we don’t have a chance.”

Richardson, brother of 1998 CGA Match Play champ Tom Richardson, teamed with Tom last year in his first CGA Four-Ball, placing 14th. James Richardson competed in the 1995 U.S. Junior Amateur, then when on to play golf at UNC.

As for Marley, it was his first time playing the CGA Four-Ball, so based on the results, he seems to have it down pat.

Smooth Transition https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/03/23/smooth-transition/ Mon, 23 Mar 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/03/23/smooth-transition/

Playing Division I college golf is a very competitive undertaking. Being successful as a freshman is particularly challenging.

But the transition from high school and junior golf to big-time college golf seems to have come relatively easy for the Colorado high school graduating class of 2014.

Eight true freshmen from Colorado have competed in all — or almost all — of his of her school’s college tournaments so far this season. And another few play semi-regularly.

Several are taking it yet another step, making a big-time impact by having been in contention for individual titles at large Division I college tournaments.

And just in the last week and a half, things have really come to a head as Arapahoe High School graduate and University of Oklahoma freshman Hannah Wood (above) won the Notre Dame Clover Cup, and Regis Jesuit grad and University of Denver frosh Chris Korte placed sixth in the 85-man Desert Shootout.

Wood, the reigning CWGA Stroke Play champion, leads Oklahoma in season stroke average (72.8) and has recorded four top-20 finishes in six college tournaments. And in the wake of her Clover Cup victory, the former Hale Irwin Elite Player was named the national female golfer of the week by Golfweek magazine.

As for Korte (left), while he hasn’t won a college tournament yet, he’s posted a remarkable three top-six finishes in his last five events (two fourths and a sixth). And, following his performance in the Desert Shootout, he was named the Summit League men’s golfer of the week.

Korte and DU freshman teammate Jake Kelley are in some ways picking up where they left off in high school at Regis. In their senior year, RJHS won the 5A boys state high school title for the fourth consecutive year. Kelley has likewise made the transition to college look relatively easy as he’s recorded two 11th-place finishes for DU, and three top-20s in all.

Here’s a quick look at some of the other true freshmen from Colorado high schools who have made an impact so far in their first season of college golf:

Sarah Hankins, Wyoming (Legacy HS graduate) — Hankins has seen periodic tournament action, with her best showing being a 36th-place finish.

Sam Marley, Northern Colorado (Arapahoe HS graduate) — Plays regularly at UNC and has notched two top-50 finishes.

Todd Millard, Air Force Academy (Silver Creek HS graduate) — Has seen limited tournament action, with his best finish being a 39th at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.

Spencer Painton, Kansas (Regis Jesuit HS graduate) — The 2013 5A state high school individual champion hasn’t seen a lot of college tournament action, but he has two 25th-place finishes to his credit.

Calli Ringsby, Stanford (Cherry Creek HS graduate) — Ringsby has appeared in a few tournaments for Stanford so far this season, with a 50th-place showing her best individual performance.

Tristan Rohrbaugh, Boise State (Basalt HS graduate) — Has notched two top-35 finishes, both during the spring schedule, including a 15th at the Pat Hicks Invitational.

Josh Seiple, Mississippi (Valor Christian HS graduate) — Seiple has been a regular on Ole Miss’ traveling squad and has posted two top-40 individual finishes.

Jaylee Tait, Montana State (Columbine HS graduate) — Tait, who qualified for the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur, has finished in the top 30 twice this season, including a 15th-place showing.

Glenn Workman, Wyoming (Pueblo West HS graduate) — Workman has been a workhorse for Wyoming as a freshman and has recorded two top-20 finishes.

Ram Tough at Home This Time https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/09/16/ram-tough-at-home-this-time/ Tue, 16 Sep 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/09/16/ram-tough-at-home-this-time/

The Ram Masters Invitational, hosted by the Colorado State men’s golf team, has only been held three times, but already it’s becoming known for its oddities.

For example:

— In Monday’s second round at Fort Collins Country Club, three players made holes-in-one — all at the same hole (the 195-yard ninth), and all within less than an hour of one another.

Freshman Drew McCullough of Wyoming, Shane Fontenot of McNeese State and Pierre Tillement of George Washington pulled off the feat. The ace came in particularly handy for McCullough, who went on to claim the individual title — by one stroke — on Tuesday.

— Three players from the 2013 5A state championship-winning Regis Jesuit team competed in the Ram Masters Invite: Jake Kelley (11th overall) and Chris Korte (36th) for the University of Denver, and individual state champ Spencer Painton (24th) for the University of Kansas.

And, for the record, three other true freshmen from Colorado high schools also played in the event: Glenn Workman for Wyoming (50th), Todd Millard for Air Force (66th) and Sam Marley for Northern Colorado (73rd).

— In 2013, the last three head coaches for CSU were on hand for the event — current coach Christian Newton, along with Jamie Bermel (now with Kansas) and Mark Crabtree (now with Louisville).

— In both of the first two Ram Masters Invitationals, in another odds-defying coincidence, CSU finished second as a team — by a single stroke on each occasion. And last year, one of the Ram players incurred a penalty on the final hole, accounting for the one-stroke difference between second place and a playoff for first.

But on Tuesday, the golf gods finally smiled on CSU as it claimed the team title in the Ram Masters Invitational. Colorado State prevailed by four over Bermel’s Kansas squad, and by seven over the 2013 champion University of Denver, now coached by Erik Billinger.

“Absolutely it is extra sweet,” said Newton, CSU’s third-year coach who notched his first team victory as a college head coach. “The guys just did a fantastic job. It was a struggle early on (Tuesday). I think they were a little tight early on and we might have lost the lead at one time. It was really good to have those guys get nervous and then pick themselves back up and finish up really good. I’m really proud of them. They did a great job.

“It’s the first (team) win for me as a head coach, so this one will definitely be real special to me. It doesn’t matter what (happens in the future), I won’t forget this one.”

CSU put six players in the top 24, including one of its three golfers competing strictly as individuals. Cameron Harrell (at left, with Newton), who shared the Ram Masters individual title last year, led the way again with a 2-over-par 212 total, good for fourth place. It marked the sixth top-10 performance of Harrell’s college career. Max Oelfke (215) was ninth, Dominic Kieffer and Patrick Winther (217) tied for 13th, Alec Bone (218) was 17th and Jimmy Makloski (219) checked in at 24th. (At top, Harrell admires the tournament trophy as Makloski shares a laugh.)

Though Kansas finished four back of CSU, the Jayhawks had a chance to catch the Rams down the stretch. But KU played the final hole in a combined 7 over par in round 3 (including a player who was disqualified on Tuesday). CSU was likewise far from stellar on No. 18, but went 2 over there.

As for DU, it held the lead late in the front nine Tuesday, but the Pioneers struggled in the middle of the round and couldn’t keep pace with CSU. Petter Mikalsen (213) led DU with a fifth-place individual finish, while Kelley (left) was 11th in his college debut.

“We had a ton of momentum because we got off to a hot start,” Billinger said. “But one of the guys (Adam Ruben) made a double bogey on 7 and we kind of lost momentum. I think the whole team kind of felt that, and we never got it back. Obviously, we always want to win, so we’re a little disappointed right now. But CSU kept the foot on the gas pedal. Hats off to them. They played great on their home course.”

The tournament was the first for Billinger (below) as a head coach.

“It’s fun obviously to get the competitive juices flowing,” he said. “I’m blessed to be able to be the coach and I couldn’t be more excited about it.”

But maybe things just evened out a bit after DU edged CSU in the Ram Masters a year ago.

“This tournament, I knew we just couldn’t lose again,” Harrell said. “One shot, two years in a row … So I knew we were going to win this one. We had to at least win this one.”

For Harrell, a senior, it was his first team victory in a multi-team event as a Ram. CSU last claimed such a team title in April 2011 at the Cougar Classic.

“Our four (counting rounds today) were 1 over, 1 over, 1 over and 2 over. I was really proud of that,” Harrell said. “We all hung in there and grinded it out and finally won. It feels good to have my first one ever (team-wise).”

The other two Colorado-based teams competing in the Ram Masters Invitational — Air Force and Northern Colorado — tied for 11th place in the 15-team field.

Hard-Fought Victory https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/07/18/hard-fought-victory/ Fri, 18 Jul 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/07/18/hard-fought-victory/ With the drag-racing action at the Mopar Mile High Nationals at nearby Bandimere Speedway making its presence known on Friday, it just seemed inevitable that the finalists in the title match of the 64th CGA Junior Match Play would eventually get revved up at Bear Creek Golf Club.

And Sam Marley of South Suburban Golf Course and Trevor Glen of the Riverdale Golf Courses didn’t disappoint.

After making a combined total of just five birdies in the first 23 holes of the 36-hole final Friday, things cranked up in a big way, making for an interesting finish. Between them, the finalists racked up 10 birdies in the final dozen holes, and halving both the seventh and 11th holes of the afternoon round with birdies.

In the end, Marley had just enough in the tank during Friday’s marathon to fend off the hard-charging Glen, scoring a 3-and-1 title-winning victory.

The way the match ended “made it a lot of fun,” said Marley (above and left), an 18-year-old graduate of Arapahoe High School. “It was awesome. I actually like playing under pressure a lot. It makes it way more fun than when it just doesn’t mean anything.”

Marley, son of South Suburban head professional Todd Marley, played the last 12 holes in 3 under par. And he needed pretty much all of that to overcome Glen, who carded six birdies in the stretch from the 24th through 33rd holes after making just two birdies in the first 23 holes.

But after narrowing his deficit from what was once 4 down to 1 down following birdies on the 32nd and 33rd holes — and making Marley admittedly “a little nervous” — Glen faltered on the tough par-4 16th. There, he pulled both his tee shot and his approach into shrub-filled native areas, losing both balls and conceding a long birdie putt to Marley. Then Glen’s hopes ended on the par-3 17th, where he three-putted for a bogey and conceded a short par putt to Marley, ending the match.

“I got on a roll there,” said Glen (left), a 17-year-old senior-to-be at Legacy High School. “Once I got through 15, after I went birdie-birdie, I was only one back at that point. Right then I thought that if I kept on that roll I had a very good chance (at winning the match). The tee shot on 16, I kind of blew it. I think there was a little too much adrenaline running through my body. I couldn’t quite handle it. I definitely got excited on those shots. I think I got too far ahead of myself.

“But you’ve got to tip your hat to (Marley) because he played amazing.”

The match featured a little of everything. Besides all the birdies at the end — and the two holes halved with birdies — there was a whiff (pictured at bottom) by Glen on a tough left-handed shot from under a tree on the par-3 13th hole, which Marley won. Ironically, that whiff came during Glen’s torrid stretch of six birdies in 10 holes.

Marley (left), who will play college golf at the University of Northern Colorado, won the tournament after being seeded 46th in the match play bracket. He emerged the champion from a field which included all three 2013 state high school champions, both Coloradans who qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur, and a two-time CGA Junior Stroke Play champ.

And it all happened in one of Marley’s final junior tournaments.

“It’s awesome,” he said, contemplating the feat. “I really can’t believe it actually. I’m excited definitely.”

Prior to Friday, Marley’s top golf accomplishment was winning the Centennial League title in high school golf. He finished 10th at the 5A state tournament last fall, and he just recently qualified for the HealthOne Colorado Open for the first time.

Being a finalist was likewise a memorable accomplishment for Glen, who never before had even made the match-play portion of the Junior Match Play.

“This is the first taste I’ve had with match play against truly good players,” the Thornton resident said. “To make it as far as I did, I’m quite impressed with myself. One thing that I take out of this more than anything is that I realize I actually belong with these kids and I know that I can play with them.

“It was a very big tournament and everybody in the state was playing in it. This was probably my top golf finish.”
