Fifty-five players will be in the field, with the top three finishers earning spots in the Senior Am, which will be contested Aug. 25-30 at Eugene Country Club in Oregon.

Of those 55, almost one-fifth have competed in the U.S. Senior Am just in the last five years.

The list includes Wyoming resident John Hornbeck, the 2018 CGA Senior Match Play champion who has played in three U.S. Senior Amateurs, going to the quarterfinals in 2016. Also, there’s three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk (round of 64 in 2017), Guy Mertz (2017), Robin Bradbury (round of 64 in 2016), Gary Albrecht (2016), Jim Reynolds (2016), Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore (2015), Thomas Roos (2015), and David Delich and Harry Johnson (both 2013 and ’14).

Also competing on Tuesday are Steve Ivan, winner of the 2017 CGA Senior Amateur and runner-up in the 2018 CGA Senior Match Play; Charlie Post, who played in the 2017 U.S. Senior Open; 2015 CGA Senior Amateur winner Bill Fowler; 2014 CGA Senior Match Play champ Tom Musselman and Sean Forey.

Birthday Boy https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/08/birthday-boy/ Thu, 08 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/08/birthday-boy/

When Colorado Golf Hall of Famer Kent Moore was apprised of who stood atop the leaderboard with nine holes left in the 45th CGA Senior Amateur Championship, he noted, “It’s like a club championship.”

Indeed, with Club at Rolling Hills members Kevin Ott and Bill Fowler setting the pace throughout much of the CGA Senior Am — which just happened to be played at Rolling Hills — it had some of the flavor of an intraclub tournament.

And the final outcome on Thursday further bore that out. Ott and Fowler battled it out through the final round and ended up finishing 1-2, with Thomas Roos of Spring Valley Golf Club tying Fowler for the runner-up spot.

“This is definitely a home-course advantage, for sure,” Ott said after celebrating his 51st birthday with the victory. “… It’s got to be a couple strokes a day (advantage). It just is. It’s not an accident that (Fowler) and I were so high up (the leaderboard). It just helps. I’ve played these greens so much, I know how they’re going to break. But you still have to hit good putts.”

Ott (left and above) went wire-to-wire and fended off Fowler and Roos in claiming his first CGA championship. But it was definitely an eventful final few holes, with Ott going double bogey-double bogey-birdie, and Fowler going birdie-triple bogey-birdie.

“I tell you what: It was a rollercoaster,” Ott said of final stretch.

Ott took a three-stroke lead into the 16th hole Thursday, but a tee shot that went into the right trees, resulting in a pitch-out, led to a double bogey after he three-putted. And Fowler, last year’s champion, rolled in a 10-foot birdie to erase all of his three-shot deficit in one hole.

“I felt like I was going to do it,” Fowler said of winning a second straight title. “After I got even on 16, I thought, ‘You know what? I can do this.’ I thought it was my tournament to win, and that didn’t happen.”

Amazingly, Ott regained the lead on the 17th hole despite taking another double bogey. Both he and Fowler (left) missed the green on the par-3, and the defending champion mishit his short pitch shot from a tight lie and his ball ended up in the bunker that was between him and the hole. Fowler left his next shot — from a plugged lie — in the sand and ended up with a very costly triple bogey. Meanwhile, Ott couldn’t hold the green with his pitch, then took three to get down from there for his double bogey.

“I lost my focus,” said Fowler, a former CGA president. “After I pulled even with him through 16, I just didn’t gather myself and collect myself and play a smart 17th hole. That’s where you need a caddie to settle you down a little bit. I didn’t do what I needed to do.

“I had a little adrenaline, so I took one less club, then I mis-hit it. Then I had the tight lie, and the ball plugged in the bunker. It was a comedy of errors. “

All of which left Ott tied with Roos and one up on Fowler going into the final hole. There, Fowler hit the pin with his third shot on the par-5 and had just a foot left for his birdie. “It went down, half into the hole,” Ott said of Fowler’s approach shot. “I thought it was in. Somehow it just kind of rimmed out.”

Ott, who had driven over a ditch that crosses the 18th fairway then hit a hybrid to the front of the green, two-putted from about 70 feet for a birdie of his own. He knocked in a 3 footer and signaled the victory with a fist pump.

“I thought I gave it away after 16,” said Ott, who has competed in just a handful of CGA championships in his life. “Then Bill helped me out on 17, then I finished strong.

“This is the best win I’ve ever had by far. It’s unbelievable really. I never thought I’d pull it off.”

Ott, who also led after the first two days, closed with a 5-over-par 76 on Thursday, leaving him with a winning total of 6-over 219. “I made 10 birdies the first two days. I only made two today — and I needed those two,” Ott noted with relief.

Fowler ended up runner-up the year after winning, shooting a final-round 75. Tying him at 220 was Roos (left), who closed with a 72, matching the best round of the day on a Rolling Hills course that features very formidable greens.

Though Roos lamented parring the 18th hole — he put a 54-yard approach shot into a bunker, but got up and down for a 5 — his showing was a career-best of sorts.

“I feel good,” he said. “It’s the best finish I’ve ever had in a (CGA) major.”

Brian Woody of The Ridge at Castle Pines North placed fourth at 225, while three-time champion Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club ended up fifth at 226 as both carded 78s on Thursday.

Interestingly, while it wasn’t hard to predict that Rolling Hills members would do well at the Senior Amateur — given how confounding the greens can be for players unfamiliar with them — Ott (left) didn’t seem likely to head the local contingent. After all, Fowler was the defending champion in the event, Scott Radcliffe has won two CGA senior majors and Sean Forey was the 2010 CGA Senior Player of the Year.

But that’s part of the beauty of golf and other sports. There’s always a level of unpredictability that keeps things interesting.

After moving around as a youth — he lived in Australia and Indonesia, along with Colorado and Wyoming — Ott has resided in Colorado continuously since 1992. The Arvada resident joined Rolling Hills about 15 years ago, but interestingly, has never won an open-division club championship there.

“I’ve been second a lot,” Ott said. “Bill Fowler, Sean Forey and Scott Radcliffe — they’re three of the best amateur golfers in the state. But this year I won the senior club championship with those three guys (in the field).”

And now, like those three players, Ott has earned statewide golf acclaim.

Decisive 18 Awaits https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/07/decisive-18-awaits/ Wed, 07 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/07/decisive-18-awaits/ Two members of The Club at Rolling Hills remained atop the leaderboard after two rounds of the 45th CGA Senior Amateur which is being contested at their home course.

First-round leader Kevin Ott retained his two-stroke lead by shooting a 2-over-par 73 on Wednesday, which left him at 1-over 143 going into Thursday’s final round. Like on Tuesday, Ott gave back three strokes in his final four holes Wednesday. He finished the day with four birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey on No. 15.

Holding down second place, just as he did after round 1, is defending champion Bill Fowler, also a Rolling Hills member. Like Ott, Fowler carded a 73 on Wednesday, leaving the 2015 winner at 145. After a first-nine 40 in round 2, Fowler closed strong, going 3 under par in his final five holes.

Fowler is attempting to become the first player since John Olive in 2001 and 2002 to win the CGA Senior Amateur in consecutive years.

Four other players are likewise within five strokes of the lead heading into the final round. Brian Woody of the Ridge at Castle Pines North carded a 72 — the best score recorded on Wednesday — to stand in third place at 147. And three-time champion Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club (75 Wednesday), Michael Smith of Rifle Creek Golf Course (74) and Thomas Roos of Spring Valley Golf Club (75) share fourth place at 148.

The field was cut to the low 40 players and ties — which turned out to be the 41 golfers at 159 or better — after two rounds.

Ott, Fowler and Woody will tee off for Thursday’s final round at 9:57 a.m.

Feeling Right at Home https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/09/06/feeling-right-at-home-3/ Tue, 06 Sep 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/09/06/feeling-right-at-home-3/ Two members of The Club at Rolling Hills parlayed their home-course advantage into spots at the top of the leaderboard after Tuesday’s first round of the 45th CGA Senior Amateur Championship.

Kevin Ott of Rolling Hills posted the only subpar round on Tuesday, firing a 1-under-par 70 for a two-stroke lead. And that was despite playing his final four holes in 3 over par. Overall for the day, Ott made six birdies and five bogeys.

And sharing second place, at 72, is another Rolling Hills member, defending Senior Amateur champion Bill Fowler. Fowler likewise tailed off at the end of his round, going 4 over on his last seven holes after being 3 under through 11.

Joining Fowler at 72 was Mike Lohse of West Woods Golf Club, who had a four-birdie day.

Three-time champion Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club shares fourth place at 73 with Thomas Roos of Spring Valley Golf Club and Dave R. Brown of Highlands Ranch Golf Club.

The 84-man field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after two rounds. The 54-hole tournament, known previously as the CGA Senior Stroke Play, will conclude on Thursday.

Mountain Men https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/17/mountain-men/ Sun, 17 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/17/mountain-men/ Kyler Dunkle apparently takes to heart the 19th-century admonition to “go West, young man.”

The Parker resident won his second CGA championship on Sunday, and both of those titles have come in western Colorado.

A year after winning the CGA Father/Son by five strokes with his dad Jason at Ironbridge Golf Club in Glenwood Springs, Kyler Dunkle prevailed by four Sunday in the 34th CGA Western Chapter Championship at Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle.

“I’ve always enjoyed being in the mountains, (whether it be) growing up coming up with my parents or skiing a lot with my buddies,” said Dunkle, who plays out of the Club at Pradera. “I just feel comfortable. It helps that the courses I’ve been able to win my championships on are great courses and they’re really fun to play. (He qualified for the 2015 Colorado Open with a 68 at Eagle Ranch.) Eagle Ranch is a really fun course to play, I’m comfortable on it and I’ve had relatively good success.

“I guess you could say the Western Slope is a more positive environment for me, but I just feel really comfortable when I’m in the mountains playing golf.”

On Sunday, Dunkle made six birdies for the second straight day at Eagle Ranch, where he was competing in the Western Chapter for the first time.

A 19-year-old who recently transferred from Colorado State University to Utah, Dunkle shot a 5-under-par 67 and finished with a 7-under 137 total for the weekend.

“It was really fun,” said Dunkle, the 2012 5A state high school champion who also qualified for last year’s U.S. Amateur. “Playing good golf is always enjoyable — much more enjoyable than playing bad golf. (But) I guess what is fun for me is I was able to enjoy playing with the people I was with. Oftentimes that’s what helps you play really well — when you’re with people you’re comfortable with. That was the most enjoyable thing for me — playing a really fun golf course and with some really good guys.”

Tristan Rohrbaugh of Ironbridge Golf Club, the 2015 champion, finished second at 141 after carding a 71 on Sunday. Mark Zbrzeznj of Eagle Vail Golf Club (70 Sunday with an eagle on the 12th hole) came in third at 142, while 2011 winner Keith Humerickhouse of Gypsum Creek Golf Course (72) was fourth at 144.

Dunkle said a two-shot swing on the par-3 15th hole was pivotal on Sunday. He drained a 20-foot birdie there, while Rohrbaugh made bogey, giving Dunkle a four-stroke lead.

“That was kind of a turning point for me,” said Dunkle, who will play in a U.S. Amateur qualifier Monday at Fort Collins Country Club, where he qualified last year. “It kind of solidified how well I was playing and put some more pressure on my playing competitors.”

In the senior tournament, Tom Musselman of Telluride Ski & Golf Club also won by a healthy margin, prevailing by five shots. (Musselman and Dunkle are pictured above, with Musselman at left.)

Musselman, the 2014 CGA Senior Match Play champion and a former Kentucky state amateur winner, posted a two-day total of even-par 144 after closing with a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday. He made four birdies each day of the championship.

Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club, a three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, and Thomas Roos of Spring Valley Golf Club shared second place at 149. Roos carded a 75 on Sunday and Polk a 76. First-round leader Gary Driber of the Ridge at Castle Pines North finished fourth at 151 after a final-round 81.

First-Timers https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/08/20/first-timers/ Thu, 20 Aug 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/08/20/first-timers/

Kent Moore started making a name for himself state-wide when he won the 1973 CGA Junior Match Play at Flatirons Golf Course. So it’s little wonder why he has a fond place in his heart for the Boulder venue.

“I really, really like this place, and I always have,” said the Colorado Golf Hall of Famer from Cherry Hills Village. “It’s in great shape and it’s really fun.”

Jeff Reich feels likewise about Flatirons, having basically “lived here” from age 12-17, with his mom dropping him off at the course on the way to work and picking him up there on the way home.

Both golfers, now in their late 50s, had their good feelings about the Boulder course reinforced on Thursday as they qualified for the U.S. Senior Amateur there. And Thomas Roos of Centennial no doubt also finds himself taking a shine to Flatirons after joining Moore and Reich in punching their tickets to the national championship for amateurs 55 and older.

Of course, Flatirons was where players such as three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin and 1972 U.S. Junior Amateur champion Bob Byman cut their teeth, golf-wise, so there’s some history to draw upon.

On Thursday, Coloradans Moore and Roos shared medalist honors in the qualifier, and Reich, who moved to Arizona at age 17, secured the third and final berth available for the national championship.

Moore and Roos matched 1-under-par 69s to land the top two spots, and Reich, a reinstated amateur, shot 72 and prevailed in a playoff. (Roos, in red shirt, and Moore are pictured together above.)

By finishing in the top three Thursday out of a field that originally numbered 47, Moore, Roos and Reich will advance to the U.S. Senior Amateur, which will be held Sept. 26-Oct. 1 in Egg Harbor Township, N.J.

It will be the first U.S. Senior Amateur for each of the three.

“It’ll be great,” said Roos, 56, whose first USGA championship was last year’s U.S. Mid-Amateur. “To get to go to another one is just a bonus. Not many people get to go at all. (USGA championships) are the top of the food chain. It is. It’s so much fun.”

Moore (left) knows something about that as this will be his 10th USGA championship, having previously gone to three U.S. Amateurs, five U.S. Mid-Ams and a USGA State Team.

“I’ve always really wanted to do this,” said the 59-year-old, who has twice been an alternate in U.S. Senior Amateur qualifying. “I missed the Junior Amateur, but I will have played in the Amateur, Mid-Amateur and Senior Am. That’ll be really run.”

Reich, who was a PGA club professional for 24 years, has never had the pleasure of competing in a USGA championship, but has long had qualifying as a major goal.

“I got my amateur status back six years ago with the whole goal being qualifying for the U.S. Senior Amateur. So this is exciting for me,” said the 58-year-old, who bears a striking resemblence to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

On Thursday, Moore made four birdies — including three straight starting on No. 12 — offset by a bogey, and a double bogey on No. 16.

Roos eagled the 492-yard, par-5 14th hole from 21 feet and added two birdies — one on the formidable 16th hole — while carding three bogeys.

“It just felt comfortable today,” Roos said. “I played here for a stroke play qualifier a few years ago and I just like the back tees.”

Reich (left), whose brother Bob used to be an assistant pro at Flartirons, was one of four players who tied for third place at 2-over-par 72. Colorado Golf Hall of Famer John Olive couldn’t wait for a playoff because he had to catch a plane, leaving Reich, fellow Arizonan John Hull and Texan Hollis Sullivan to vie for the third national berth.

Sullivan, who could have won the playoff had he made a 4-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole, instead bowed out with a bogey on the second playoff hole. Both of the Arizonans hit their drives on No. 18 — the third extra hole — to the left and had to deal with trees on their second shots. After Hull missed the green and pitched to 8 feet, he couldn’t sink his par putt. Reich, who had punched his second shot through trees to the collar behind the green, putted to 4 feet then sank the par attempt to earn the final spot. It was a similar putt to one Reich had missed in regulation, preventing him from avoiding a playoff to claim the third national berth.

“My brother (Jim) was out following me,” said Reich, a graduate of Centaurus High School in Lafayette. “I told him, ‘I should have done this work earlier.’

“I just had some opportunities and kept playing. I’m very thankful to be in.”

Aiming for Another Deep Run at U.S. Mid-Am https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2014/08/04/aiming-for-another-deep-run-at-u-s-mid-am/ Mon, 04 Aug 2014 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2014/08/04/aiming-for-another-deep-run-at-u-s-mid-am/

It’s quite a feat to qualify for most USGA championships, so it’s not surprising that that is a goal in and of itself for many competitors.

Then there are players such as Keith Humerickhouse of Eagle and Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs who certainly appreciate qualifying for national USGA events, but they’ve experienced enough success at that level that they’re looking for bigger things.

On Monday at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Windsor, both Humerickhouse and Harrington qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur for the third time. And in each of their previous appearances in the event, they’ve advanced to the 64-man match-play portion of the championship. In fact, each has reached the round of 16 once, Humerickhouse last year and Harrington in 2006. In the latter’s case, ironically, he was eliminated in the Sweet 16 by a fellow Coloradan, Rick DeWitt.

So both Humerickhouse and Harrington have whetted their appetite in the past to the point that they’re convinced that even bigger things could be in store.

“I feel like I can win (the national Mid-Am title),” Humerickhouse said flat out. “I learned the first year, in 2010 (when he lost in the round of 32), that I could compete. After last year when I went to Birmingham, I truly believe that I can win. You’ve just got to play good golf for (six) days in a row, which is not easy but …”

Harrington also qualified for the U.S. Amateur this summer, but it’s the Mid-Am where he believes he can really make headway.

“The U.S. Am is great, but I feel I can compete in the U.S. Mid-Am to some degree,” he said. “If you were to ask me which I’d choose to go to, it would be the Mid-Am over the U.S. Am. The U.S. Am is clearly a better tournament, but the competition is fierce.”

Humerickhouse and Harrington were two of the five national qualifiers Monday for the tournament that’s limited to players 25 and older.

Humerickhouse, the former professional who has won the last four CGA Mid-Amateurs, earned medalist honors with a 6-under-par 65. Harrington, the 2014 CGA Mid-Amateur Match Play Invitational champ, fired a 66.

Landing the three remaining national berths out of Monday’s field — which originally numbered 81 — were Thomas Roos of Centennial, Rob Clever of Firestone and Mark Zbrzeznj of Avon. Roos and Clever matched 67s, while Zbrzeznj shot 68 and gained the final spot by parring the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Jeffrey Gravina of Littleton, who missed a 10-foot par putt on the second extra hole after being in bunkers twice, was relegated to the first alternate position despite a 68.

The qualifiers range in age from 30 (Zbrzeznj) to 55 (Roos), with Clever being 34, Humerickhouse 38 and Harrington 42. (The qualifiers not involved in the playoff are pictured at top, from left: Humerickhouse, Harrington, Clever and Roos.)

In all, 18 players broke par in Monday’s qualifying tournament.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur will be played Sept. 6-11 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.

In last year’s U.S. Mid-Am, Humerickhouse (left) not only made it to the final 16, but in the round of 32 he ousted a two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, Tim Jackson of Germantown, Pa.

And on Monday, the left-hander again demonstrated why he’s been such a dominant force in the mid-amateur ranks in Colorado over the last several years. He made seven birdies on the day, and the only blemish on his card came on No. 17, his eighth hole of the day, which he bogeyed.

Humerickhouse’s memories from the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links qualifying held at Highland Meadows — where he just missed qualifying despite rounds of 68-67 — proved valuable on Monday.

“It was nice because the pin locations were the same as they were for the Publinks qualifier” last year, he said. “I knew before even going to the hole where they were located. I knew exactly the shots that I was going to have. It definitely helped.” Asked how he remembers something so distinctly from rounds he played more than 13 months ago, he said, “You play 36 holes of competitive golf — and you play well — you’re going to remember.”

Harrington likewise had only one bogey on Monday, but he got his out of the way very early. On the par-5 first hole, he only had a 5-iron in for his second shot, but he “chunk-pushed it” and made a 6. “It was a horrible shot,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Oh boy.’ I felt like I kind of gave two away.” But from then on, his card was nice and clean, with six birdies and no bogeys for the final 17 holes.

With his performance Monday, Harrington guaranteed himself same-year berths in both the U.S. Mid-Am and the U.S. Am for the first time in his career.

“Double the fun,” he said. “It will just be a lot of fun (to play both). The (Mid-Am) course is supposedly spectacular, and it’s on the East Coast where my family is from. Some of them might be able to come down and watch me play there, which is very nice. In Atlanta (for the U.S. Amateur), my father and my stepmother are coming down.”

The Mid-Am will be Harrington’s ninth USGA championship, with three U.S. Amateurs, three Mid-Ams and three USGA State Teams.

The other three qualifiers on Monday — Roos, Clever and Zbrzeznj (left) — will each be headed to his first USGA championship. The fact that Roos made it as a 55-year-old while competing against some players half his age was a feat unto itself.

“At 55 it’s special,” said Roos, who finished third in the CGA Senior Stroke Play last year. “I figure (some of the younger guys) will probably beat me by a few strokes, but I feel like I can compete. If I didn’t feel like I could come out and compete, I wouldn’t try.”

One of the ways Roos leveled the playing field Monday was by needing just 23 putts in his round. He started off birdie-birdie and was on his way.

Though Roos plays a lot of golf — 31 tournaments last year, for example — Monday’s 67 tied his competitive low for 2014.

Clever rallied in a big way to shoot what was necessary to qualify for the Mid-Am. He played his first eight holes in 1 over par, but a hard-earned par on No. 18 (his ninth hole) put him in the right frame of mind. From there, he hit a 247-yard 3-wood approach on No. 1 to 20 feet and holed his eagle putt. And he backed that up with an 8-foot birdie on 2, then capped off his round with birdie putts of 4 and 15 feet on his last two holes.

“I’ve played golf most of my life and college golf at San Jose State, but I’ve never won a CGA event and never been to a national championship,” said Clever, whose biggest victory came at the 2004 Long Beach Match Play. “This will be a lot of fun. My dad will be along caddying for me (as he was on Monday). It’s just about getting out and being with my dad now.”

As for Zbrzeznj, qualifying Monday was particularly meaningful given that he comes from Philadelphia, which is about 50 miles from Bethlehem.

“It feels tremendous,” said the University of Colorado graduate. “I’ve been trying in these USGA (qualifying) events for probably 15 years since I was a junior (golfer) and this is the first one I’ve made. It feels amazing. I get to go home. I’m originally from Philadelphia. I’ve played Saucon Valley before. This is special.”
