Tristan Rohrbaugh – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf Tue, 24 May 2022 17:06:18 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/cga-favicon-150x150.png Tristan Rohrbaugh – Colorado Golf Archives https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf 32 32 Back for More https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/13/back-for-more-11/ Thu, 13 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/13/back-for-more-11/ The 35th edition of the CGA Western Chapter Championship will be contested on Saturday and Sunday (July 15-16), with Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction hosting the tournament for the first time since 2011.

The 36-hole event will include open and senior flights, with gross and net divisions.

Coloradan Kyler Dunkle won’t defend his title as he’ll be competing in U.S. Amateur qualifying on Monday in Highland, Utah. Dunkle advanced to the round of 16 at the 2016 U.S. Am.

But the Western Chapter field will include Tristan Rohrbaugh of Carbondale, who won the championship in 2015 and was runner-up to Dunkle last year. Rohrbaugh, a former 3A state high school champion who plays his college golf at Boise State, qualified for last year’s U.S. Am.

Also scheduled to compete this weekend are Ross Macdonald and Isaac Petersilie, winners of every Colorado Junior Amateur from 2013 to ’15, with Macdonald capturing two of those three. Macdonald is a University of Colorado golfer, while Petersilie plays at the University of Denver.

The Western Chapter senior division field includes David Delich and Harry Johnson, both former CGA Senior Players of the Year.

California Dreaming https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/07/01/california-dreaming/ Sat, 01 Jul 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/07/01/california-dreaming/ Colorado residents have had a nice run the last couple of years at the U.S. Amateur, with David Oraee advancing to the match play round of 16 in 2015 and Kyler Dunkle making it to the Sweet 16 last year.

And two other Coloradans — Jake Staiano (2015) and Wyndham Clark (2016) — have likewise earned spots in the 64-man match play field in the 312-player event.

All those golfers began their U.S. Amateur journey with a 36-hole qualifying tournament in Colorado. Two of those qualifying events are on tap in the next two weeks as Columbine Country Club will host one on Monday (July 3) and Fort Collins Country Club one on July 13.

In each case, the top three finishers out of a field of 80-plus players will earn berths to the U.S. Am, scheduled for Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

The qualifying field for Monday at Columbine features 2016 CGA Amateur champion Colin Prater, who earned a U.S. Am berth at Columbine last year. Also set to compete are 2017 CGA Match Play winner Chris Korte; former U.S. Am qualifiers Staiano, Chris Thayer, Spencer Painton and Jeff Chapman; Josh Seiple, the 2016 CGA Match Play runner-up who recently advanced to the round of 32 at the British Amateur; and 2015 CGA Match Play champ Nick Nosewicz.

At Fort Collins CC on July 13, 2016 U.S. Am qualifiers Tristan Rohrbaugh and Colton Yates are in the field. Also scheduled to play are Steve Irwin, who’s twice competed in the U.S. Amateur and once in the U.S. Open; 2017 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifiers Jackson Solem and Davis Bryant; and former 5A state high school champion Hunter Paugh.

Going Low https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/06/19/going-low-7/ Mon, 19 Jun 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/06/19/going-low-7/ University of Denver teammates went 1-2-3 Monday in stroke-play qualifying for the 117th CGA Match Play at The Club at Ravenna in Littleton.

Jake Kelley (pictured) of Columbine Country Club earned medalist honors and established a course record for the gold/black tees by shooting an 8-under-par 63 at Ravenna. The DU senior-to-be made two eagles — including one on the 346-yard par-4 seventh hole — to go along with five birdies and one bogey.

Chris Korte of Lone Tree Golf Club, a high school (Regis Jesuit) and college (DU) teammate of Kelley, landed the No. 2 seed in match play by firing a 65. Korte, the 2015 CGA Amateur champion, made seven birdies and one bogey on the day.

And Isaac Petersilie of Colorado Springs Country Club, also a DU golfer, managed a 67 Monday to share third place with Tristan Rohrbaugh of Ironbridge Golf Club, a Boise State golfer. Petersilie carded an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys on Monday. Rohrbaugh, like Petersilie a former Colorado state high school champion, posted an eagle, five birdies and three bogeys.

Colorado State University teammates Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club and AJ Ott of Ptarmigan Country Club recorded 68s on Monday to tie for fifth place.

All told on Monday, 10 players carded sub-par rounds at Ravenna, which is hosting the CGA’s oldest championship for the first time.

The top 64 players out of the original field of 84 — those who shot 79 or better on Monday — will advance to match play, which begins on Tuesday and continues through Friday’s 36-hole final. Among those 64 are 2016 CGA Player of the Year Kyler Dunkle of the Club at Pradera (71), 2016 CGA Amateur champion Colin Prater of The Broadmoor Golf Club (72) and 2015 Match Play winner Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course (76).

U.S. Am, Here We Come https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/25/u-s-am-here-we-come/ Mon, 25 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/25/u-s-am-here-we-come/

Wyndham Clark made his U.S. Amateur debut as a 16-year-old in 2010 at Chambers Bay, which would go on to host the 2015 U.S. Open.

And thanks to his performance Monday at Columbine Country Club, he’ll likely make his final U.S. Amateur appearance at Oakland Hills in Michigan, home to six U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships and a Ryder Cup over the years.

Clark, the Highlands Ranch resident who twice won the 4A state high school tournament and claimed the 2010 CGA Amateur title as a 16-year-old, had qualified for the U.S. Am four previous times, but wanted to make sure he made it to one more before likely turning pro late next spring following his senior season at the University of Oregon. That’s his new college golf home after playing his previous years at Oklahoma State.

“I’m running out of chances to play in it because I’m looking to turn pro soon,” the 22-year-old said Monday. “It’s definitely important to me. I really wanted to make it, especially not making it last year. It always sucks watching it from a distance. It’ll be nice to be there this time and compete and see where my game is at.”

The 2014 Big 12 Player of the Year joined Tristan Rohrbaugh of Carbondale and Colin Prater of Colorado Springs in punching their tickets to the 116th U.S. Amateur through a 36-hole qualifying tournament at Columbine. While Clark will be going to his eighth USGA championship overall, Rohrbaugh and Prater will be making their USGA championship debuts. (The qualifiers are pictured above, from left: Rohrbaugh, Clark and Prater.)

Rohrbaugh (left), a former 3A state high school champion and a junior-to-be at Boise State, captured medalist honors Monday, shooting rounds of 68-66 for a 10-under-par 134 total. Rohrbaugh holed out from 97 yards for eagle at the par-4 17th hole in the morning and racked up a dozen birdies go along with four bogeys.

Prater, a University of Colorado-Colorado Springs golfer who won the Pikes Peak Amateur on Saturday, went 68-69 to check in at 137. He carded 11 birdies and four bogeys on the day.

Clark matched Prater’s 68-69 day, chalking up an eagle (from 30 feet on his 20th hole of the day), eight birdies and three bogeys overall.

While Clark (left), who’s No. 461 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, overcame a necessary hurdle on Monday, he has bigger things in mind. After all, the 2014 Big 12 Player of the Year twice made it to the 64-man match-play bracket in the U.S. Am and would like to be a contender for the title this time around.

“It’s good to be back,” he said. “I love playing that (U.S. Am) tournament. My game is OK right now. I need to hit it a little better. If I hit it good, I know I can play really well. All the guys I play against on a regular basis are the ones that play at the U.S. Am and have a chance to win it. I know I can do that. I just need to get my game in shape and take it to the course and hope that I show up. Once you get into match play, it’s a crapshoot. You can play good and lose and you can play bad and win. The first goal is to get into match play because that’s really where the tournament starts.”

Of course, Rohrbaugh and Prater would like to make some noise on the national stage as well. But the step of qualifying for the U.S. Am for the first time is a major accomplishment in itself.

“It’s pretty cool,” Rohrbaugh said. “It’s cool to even go play that place (Oakland Hills), let alone going to the U.S. Amateur there. I’m pretty excited. It hasn’t really sunk in.”

Said Prater (left): “It’s a dream come true. I think this is the fourth year I’ve tried to qualify for the U.S. Am, and the first time I make it. This is the tournament I circled on the schedule; this was the biggest one. This is what I wanted to peak for.”

For Rohrbaugh, while he will be competing in his first USGA championship, he’s certainly not a stranger to being inside the ropes at such events. He’s caddied at three U.S. Senior Opens for his dad, three-time Colorado PGA Professional Champion Doug Rohrbaugh.

To be sure, though, playing in a national championship — and arguably the most prestigious amateur tournament on the planet — will be unique. That’s why Rohrbaugh had to work to keep his emotions in check on Monday at Columbine.

“I just tried to stay as calm as possible out there, especially coming down the stretch,” he said.

And it seemed to work, as his double-digit-under-par total would indicate.

“I think this was pretty good,” Rohrbaugh said. “I didn’t miss much, and when I did I’d hit it to like 3 feet every time. I had a lot of birdies inside 10 feet (and) probably four or five inside 5 feet. It’s not like I was putting lights out. I was just hitting it good.”

Prater, meanwhile, carried over his strong play from the Pikes Peak Amateur, where he easily prevailed in Saturday’s 36-hole final match to take the title.

“That (win) gave me some confidence coming into this today,” said Prater, who advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying last year.

“Overall today, I made a lot of putts. I think I just had complete control of my game. I hit wedges correct distances, I hit it in the correct spots, I gave myself good looks at birdie. When I missed the green or hit it in the trees, I was able to hit a wedge close. I think that’s what saved me today. I hit a couple balls in the trees. I punched them back into play, hit it inside 15 feet and made the putt or par.”

All told, 75 players competed Monday for the three U.S. Amateur berths.

In the earlier U.S. Amateur qualifier held in Colorado — on July 18 at Fort Collins Country Club — Parker residents Kyler Dunkle and Tanner Jenson, and Colorado State University golfer Colton Yates, punched their tickets to the national championship.

Overall, 312 players will compete in the U.S. Am.

Mountain Men https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/17/mountain-men/ Sun, 17 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/17/mountain-men/ Kyler Dunkle apparently takes to heart the 19th-century admonition to “go West, young man.”

The Parker resident won his second CGA championship on Sunday, and both of those titles have come in western Colorado.

A year after winning the CGA Father/Son by five strokes with his dad Jason at Ironbridge Golf Club in Glenwood Springs, Kyler Dunkle prevailed by four Sunday in the 34th CGA Western Chapter Championship at Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle.

“I’ve always enjoyed being in the mountains, (whether it be) growing up coming up with my parents or skiing a lot with my buddies,” said Dunkle, who plays out of the Club at Pradera. “I just feel comfortable. It helps that the courses I’ve been able to win my championships on are great courses and they’re really fun to play. (He qualified for the 2015 Colorado Open with a 68 at Eagle Ranch.) Eagle Ranch is a really fun course to play, I’m comfortable on it and I’ve had relatively good success.

“I guess you could say the Western Slope is a more positive environment for me, but I just feel really comfortable when I’m in the mountains playing golf.”

On Sunday, Dunkle made six birdies for the second straight day at Eagle Ranch, where he was competing in the Western Chapter for the first time.

A 19-year-old who recently transferred from Colorado State University to Utah, Dunkle shot a 5-under-par 67 and finished with a 7-under 137 total for the weekend.

“It was really fun,” said Dunkle, the 2012 5A state high school champion who also qualified for last year’s U.S. Amateur. “Playing good golf is always enjoyable — much more enjoyable than playing bad golf. (But) I guess what is fun for me is I was able to enjoy playing with the people I was with. Oftentimes that’s what helps you play really well — when you’re with people you’re comfortable with. That was the most enjoyable thing for me — playing a really fun golf course and with some really good guys.”

Tristan Rohrbaugh of Ironbridge Golf Club, the 2015 champion, finished second at 141 after carding a 71 on Sunday. Mark Zbrzeznj of Eagle Vail Golf Club (70 Sunday with an eagle on the 12th hole) came in third at 142, while 2011 winner Keith Humerickhouse of Gypsum Creek Golf Course (72) was fourth at 144.

Dunkle said a two-shot swing on the par-3 15th hole was pivotal on Sunday. He drained a 20-foot birdie there, while Rohrbaugh made bogey, giving Dunkle a four-stroke lead.

“That was kind of a turning point for me,” said Dunkle, who will play in a U.S. Amateur qualifier Monday at Fort Collins Country Club, where he qualified last year. “It kind of solidified how well I was playing and put some more pressure on my playing competitors.”

In the senior tournament, Tom Musselman of Telluride Ski & Golf Club also won by a healthy margin, prevailing by five shots. (Musselman and Dunkle are pictured above, with Musselman at left.)

Musselman, the 2014 CGA Senior Match Play champion and a former Kentucky state amateur winner, posted a two-day total of even-par 144 after closing with a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday. He made four birdies each day of the championship.

Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club, a three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year, and Thomas Roos of Spring Valley Golf Club shared second place at 149. Roos carded a 75 on Sunday and Polk a 76. First-round leader Gary Driber of the Ridge at Castle Pines North finished fourth at 151 after a final-round 81.

Halfway Point at Eagle Ranch https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/16/halfway-point-at-eagle-ranch/ Sat, 16 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/16/halfway-point-at-eagle-ranch/ Joel Perez of Colorado National Golf Club shot a bogey-free 3-under-par 69 that gave him a one-stroke lead after Saturday’s opening round of the 34th CGA Western Chapter Championship at Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle.

Perez made three birdies and 15 pars to post the only round in the 60s on a day when the wind picked up considerably in the afternoon.

Defending champion Tristan Rohrbaugh of Ironbridge Golf Club and fellow former state high school champion Kyler Dunkle matched 70s to share second place in the opening division going into Sunday’s final round. Dunkle, who recently transferred from Colorado State to Utah, birdied his first four holes of the tournament. Rohrbaugh made three straight birdies during the middle of his round.

Four players, including 2011 champ Keith Humerickhouse of Gypsum Creek Golf Course, fired even-par 72s and are tied for fourth place. Humerickhouse was joined at that figure by Mark Zbrzeznj of Eagle Vail Golf Club, Brad Delman of Eagle Ranch and Joey Haack of Ironbridge.

In the senior division, Gary Driber of the Ridge at Castle Pines North grabbed the lead with a 2-under-par 70, making an eagle and five birdies in the process.

Tom Musselman of Telluride Ski & Golf Club, the 2014 CGA Senior Match Play champion, also broke par Saturday, posting a 71. Three-time CGA Senior Player of the Year Robert Polk of Colorado Golf Club and Jeffrey English of CommonGround Golf Course share third place at 73.

Go West https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/13/go-west/ Wed, 13 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/13/go-west/ Two former champions, 2015 winner Tristan Rohrbaugh of Carbondale and 2011 champ Keith Humerickhouse of Gypsum, will be looking for a second title this weekend when they compete in the 34th CGA Western Chapter Championship.

The 36-hole tournament, which features both an open and senior division, will take place Saturday and Sunday (July 16-17) at Eagle Ranch Golf Club in Eagle.

Humerickhouse, who lives in the area, won the third of his four consecutive CGA Mid-Amateur titles (2010-13) at Eagle Ranch. First Trifecta https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/07/05/first-trifecta/ Tue, 05 Jul 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/07/05/first-trifecta/

In some respects, these are unprecedented times for the amateurs in the Colorado Cup Matches they play against professionals from the Colorado PGA.

To wit:

— On Tuesday, when the matches were contested for the 46th year overall, and the 11th year with a women’s division, the CGA and CWGA amateurs swept the titles in the open, senior and women’s competitions for the first time.

— The eight-point winning margin in the open division (13-5) was the largest since the pros won 13.5-4.5 in 2002. (The CGA’s open team is pictured above.)

— With Tuesday’s victory at Valley Country Club, the amateurs have now won the open division three straight years, something they had never done before since the Cup Matches began in 1971. In fact, the last time the amateurs had won two straight before this current run was 2000-01, when their teams included a current PGA Tour player (Kevin Stadler), the winners of four Colorado Opens (Derek Tolan, Stadler and Ben Portie) and a Colorado Golf Hall of Famer (Rick DeWitt).

— And, of course, the CWGA amateurs continue to own a remarkable unblemished record, having gone 11-0 against the professionals.

— Even in the senior division, where the amateurs had won just once since 2005, they eked out a victory on Tuesday. (They’re pictured at left.)

“Obviously as amateurs we want to beat the pros, and the pros obviously want to beat us, so there is a good rivalry between the two of us,” said CGA amateur open-division captain Nick Nosewicz, winner of the 2015 CGA Match Play. “It’s pretty special. Anytime you can get your name on the trophy that’s state-related and be part of a team, it’s fun.”

On Tuesday, the CGA amateurs defeated the Colorado PGA professionals 13-5 in the open division and 9.5-8.5 in the seniors, while the CWGA amateurs (below) kept their record unblemished against the pros, winning 6-3.

“That was a relief,” said Deb Hughes, who served as CWGA amateur captain and won both her four ball and singles matches, the latter thanks to carding an eagle and three birdies. “(The pressure to keep the perfect record intact) was no joke. I told the girls, ‘Don’t worry about it, just go out and play and enjoy yourselves.

“But I was worried because I didn’t expect to be appointed the captain. I came in this morning and all the girls were sitting at the table and I sat down thinking I was just going to join in. They all looked at me and said, ‘You’re the captain.’ I said, ‘What?’ I thought they were kidding. I’ve never done anything like this before. But it worked out OK.”

As it did for the seniors, whose only previous win against the pros in the last decade came in 2012. This time around, Tom Roos served as senior amateur captain.

“I think it’s great (to notch the victory),” said 2015 CGA Senior Stroke Play winner Bill Fowler, who won his singles match and halved his four-ball while teaming with Sean Forey. “We obviously played well. It’s kind of a cobbled-together team, but I think everyone went out to do the best they could, and at the end of the day we got one more point than them.”

The professionals still handily lead the all-time open series, 30-14 with two draws. With Tuesday’s victory, senior amateurs took the overall lead in their series 16-15 with three draws. And, after a one-year hiatus in the women’s competition, the women’s amateurs continued their Colorado Cup win streak.

Eight players — all amateurs — won both their four-ball and singles matches on Tuesday: Chris Thayer, Andrew Tapia, Connor Klein and Tristan Rohrbaugh in the open division; Hughes, Taylor Dorans and Sarah Hankins in the women’s competition; and Art Cudworth in the seniors. (Hughes and Dorans are pictured at left.)

Suffice it to say there was some pretty good golf played on Tuesday.

Nosewicz noted that he was 5 under par on his own ball in the morning four ball, and teammate Chris Korte, winner of the 2015 CGA Stroke Play, was 5 under on his. But the future U.S. Amateur Four-Ball qualifying team still lost 3 and 2 to professionals Geoff Keffer and Blake Sharamitaro.

But both CGA champions notched singles victories against former Colorado PGA Players of the Year, with Korte edging Keffer 3 and 1 and Nosewicz defeating Caine Fitzgerald 2 and 1. As captain, Nosewicz arranged to face Fitzgerald as the former plays out of Meadow Hills Golf Course and the latter is an assistant professional there.

“I wanted to make sure somebody from Meadow Hills won today,” Nosewicz said with a smile. “But I think I had six birdies and an eagle and won with a hole left to play. It was a battle, but a fun one indeed.”

As for his four-ball pairings, Nosewicz said, “I kind of knew the players I wanted to pair together. I know a couple of the amateurs’ games and I knew which ones could play this course really well. I asked Chris Thayer and Korte for a little input. I had six solid squads that we wanted to play. Then I got in and (almost everyone else) won. I did OK. Dustin (Jensen from the CGA) said I could stay.”

While Nosewicz is a relative newcomer to the Colorado Cup Matches — Tuesday was his second — Hughes and Fowler are veterans, Hughes having competed in five and Fowler in enough that he doesn’t remember the exact number.

“I haven’t won very many (titles with the amateur team), so this is historic for me too,” Fowler said. “I haven’t seen my name on the trophy on the open side but I’m going to look for it because I’m hoping to have my name on (for both the open and senior divisions).

“It took me a long time to realize I’m good enough to play against some of these pros, and to actually go and beat them once in a while is certainly an accomplishment that I’m proud of. The professionals obviously play at a very high level so that’s kind of a barometer for us to be able to compete and be successful at that level. I respect them. It’s always fun to compete and see how we compare.”

Like Sister, Like Brother? https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/06/20/like-sister-like-brother/ Mon, 20 Jun 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/06/20/like-sister-like-brother/ Last week, Steven Kupcho’s younger sister, Jennifer, won the CWGA Match Play title. And on Monday at the 116th CGA Match Play, Steven seemed to pick up right where his sibling left off.

Kucho (pictured), a former University of Northern Colorado golfer who plays out of Heritage at Westmoor, shot a 6-under-par 66 at Lone Tree Golf Club to share medalist honors with Colorado State University golfer Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club.

The two led the way for the 64 players who will begin match play on Tuesday. Eleven players broke par on Monday and a round of 80 or better was required to advance to match play.

While Nick Nosewicz of Meadow Hills Golf Course didn’t have the low score on Monday — though, at 69, he wasn’t far behind — he will be the No. 1 seed for match play as the defending champion. Kupcho drew the No. 2 seed and Staino No. 3.

Kupcho, the 2012 CGA Player of the Year, and Staiano, who advanced to the round of 64 at last year’s U.S. Amateur, each made seven birdies and a bogey Monday at Lone Tree, which is hosting the CGA Match Play for the first time.

Finishing third in stroke play was 2014 CGA Mid-Amateur champion Chris Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club (67). Jimmy Makloski of Pueblo Country Club and Tristan Rohrbaugh of Ironbridge Golf Club, also both former CGA champions, shared fourth place at 68. Makloski plays college golf for CSU, while Rohrbaugh is at Boise State.

Also among those easily advancing to match play was University of Denver golfer Chris Korte of Lone Tree Golf Club, the 2015 CGA Stroke Play champion.

Play will continue throughout the week at Lone Tree, with the 36-hole final set for Friday.

Best of the West https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/07/19/best-of-the-west/ Sun, 19 Jul 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/07/19/best-of-the-west/ Doug Rohrbaugh of Carbondale has garnered plenty of headlines over the last few years, having won the 2013 HealthOne Colorado Senior Open and two Colorado PGA Professional Championships, and earning a spot on the 2015 Champions Tour.

On Sunday, it was son Tristan’s turn again.

Two years ago, the younger Rohrbaugh won the 3A state high school title and subsequently signed a letter of intent to play college golf at Boise State. And on Sunday, he claimed a CGA championship title for the first time.

The 19-year-old from Ironbridge Golf Club — where Doug is the director of golf — finished with two straight birdies and played his final 11 holes in 4 under par en route to a two-stroke victory in the 33rd CGA Western Chapter Championship at Battlement Mesa Golf Club.

“It felt good,” said Rohrbaugh, who two-putted the 17th hole for one birdie and drained a 20-footer for another on No. 18 to cap off his round. “I played solid all week.”

Rohrbaugh, a sophomore-to-be at Boise State, shot a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday, giving him a 3-under 141 total. He finished two ahead of runner-up Clayton Crawford of Maroon Creek Club. Crawford, who shared the first-round lead with Rohrbaugh and Josh McLaughlin, birdied the 16th and 17th holes on Sunday to card a final-round 71.

“It was a lot of fun to play with one of my best friends (Crawford) in the final group,” Rohrbaugh said. “We always battled through high school tournaments (Rohrbaugh at Basalt HS and Crawford at Aspen HS) and at junior tourneys.” Crawford now plays college golf at Texas Christian University.

Rohrbaugh took the lead for good from his friend when Crawford bogeyed No. 10, and went up by two with his birdie on No. 11. Then Rohrbaugh answered Crawford’s two consecutive late birdies with two straight of his own.

“I hit it OK, not my best (overall),” Rohrbaugh said. “But I managed my game well. I wasn’t striking it fantastic, but I didn’t make any big mistakes.”

Zack Neiditz of Aspen Golf Club, a playoff runner-up in last year’s CGA Mid-Amateur Championship, placed third at 144 after closing with a 71. Defending champion Gavin Lyons of Dalton Ranch Golf Club was fourth at 145 after a 72 on Sunday.

In the senior championship flight, Michael Smith of Rifle Creek Golf Course prevailed by a stroke in a tight contest in which nine players finished within five shots of the winner. (Smith and Rohrbaugh are pictured above.)

Smith shot an even-par 72 on Sunday to post a 1-over-par 145 total. He birdied his 17th hole, the par-3 eighth, to account for the margin of victory. Smith, a co-leader going into the day, finished with one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars on the day.

Kirk Blaszyk of Glenwood Springs Golf Club placed second among the seniors after firing back-to-back 73s. Blaszyk, who eagled his second hole of the day and birdied his fourth, paid the price for a double-bogey 7 on his 16th hole.
