They never trailed — even once — in the first four matches they played at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif. That’s 66 holes of either leading or — at worst — being tied.

In fact, that streak was extended to 72 holes on Wednesday afternoon in the finals of the national championship.

And even when the streak ended, it didn’t faze the two Rams, who qualified in Westminster for the championship. Prendergast and Secor were 2 down with four holes left, but a big-time rally down the stretch netted them a 1-up victory and the national title.

After securing the championship by halving No. 18 with teenagers Yachun Chang of Chinese Taipei and Lei Ye of China, Secor said on a USGA video, “I can’t believe we just did that.” (The champions are pictured in a USGA photo, with Prendergast at left.)

The victory by Prendergast and Secor is believed to be the first USGA national amateur championship by a person or team with strong Colorado ties since Jill McGill won the 1993 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1994 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. Prendergast is a CSU junior from Sparks, Nev., and Secor is a sophomore from Portland, Ore. Each of the last two years, they’ve been medalists in the Colorado qualifying tournament to earn berths into the national Women’s Amateur Four-Ball.

Both are members of the CGA.

After qualifying last October at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve, Secor made a comment that now appears prescient.

“The biggest thing is getting redemption,” she said then. “We played Monica Vaughn (who won the 2017 NCAA individual title) and Bailey Tardy (a 2016 Curtis Cup teammate of Vaughn) “” probably the top two amateur players in the country (then) “” in the round of 16, and we really want to get redemption and come back and win the (national) Four-Ball. I definitely feel confident, and I know KP does too.”

Chang, 17, and Ye, 16, first took a lead with a birdie on the seventh hole of Wednesday afternoon’s final. But the Rams certainly didn’t let that get them down. They retook the lead on No. 9 after two straight birdies and were all square after 12. That’s when Chang and Ye went birdie-par to take a 2-up lead through 14.

With some in the gallery openly rooting for Chang and Ye, Secor gained extra motivation.

“That’s how she plays,” Pendergast said of Secor in an interview with the USGA. “She gets fired up, and that really helps her, and I think it actually helped me, too. I got pumped up after I made par on 15, and then we got two good shots in on 16. We had the tee, and I think those two shots really helped put pressure on them.”

Indeed, after going 2 down, Prendergast and Secor responded in kind — and then some — by winning three straight holes: No. 15 with a par and Nos. 16 and 17 with birdies — to take the lead again, at 1 up. Secor contributed the 12-foot birdie on 16 and Prendergast two-putted for birdie on the decisive 17th, prompting Secor to yell, “Catch Ram Fever.” And after the two sides halved No. 18 with pars, it was celebration time for the Rams teammates.

Prendergast and Secor finished 3 under par in the title match.

Earlier on Wednesday, they advanced with a 3 and 2 semifinal win over future Duke teammates Megan Furtney of Chicago and Erica Shepherd of Greenwood, Ind., the 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior champion. The Rams made five birdies in a bogey-free 16 holes.

For a team that started out so poorly in the national championship, Prendergast and Secor certainly caught fire.

The CSU teammates were 3 over par best ball after their first six holes of stroke play at El Caballero. Suffice it to say things weren’t looking particularly good for the two to return to match play in the event after going to the round of 16 in 2017.

But going 10 under par over the next 30 holes of stroke play rectified that, and Prendergast and Secor were off and running. And five match play victories later, they had the joy of holding the national championship trophy.

In that respect, they’re now in the same category as their coach at CSU, Annie Young. Then known as Annie Thurman, she claimed a national title in the 2002 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links.

Next up for Prendergast and Secor will be the NCAA Regionals May 7-9 in Austin, Texas, where they’ll compete as individuals.

Final Four https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/05/01/final-four-2/ Tue, 01 May 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/05/01/final-four-2/ A journey that began with a medalist-winning performance in a qualifying tournament in October at Walnut Creek Golf Preserve in Westminster has led to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship for Colorado State University teammates Katrina Prendergast and Ellen Secor.

A year after making it to the round of 16 in this national event, the two Rams earned two victories on Tuesday to advance to the final four at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.

If Prendergast and Secor win two more matches on Wednesday, they’ll be USGA national champions.

The CSU teammates have won their three matches by margins of 4 and 2, 4 and 2, and 1 up. (The two are pictured, with Prendergast at left.)

On Tuesday morning, they scored a 4 and 2 victory in the round of 16 over Californians Hailey Borja and Chayse Gomez. And in the afternoon, they prevailed 1 up over 32nd-seeded Katherine Gravel-Coursol of Canada and Paige Nelson of Farmers Branch, Texas, who on Monday beat the stroke-play medalists.

In the quarterfinals, Prendergast and Secor won Nos. 3 and 5 with pars and No. 4 with a birdie to go 3 up, and never trailed. But Gravel-Coursol and Nelson won holes 12 through 14, with two birdies and a par, to square the match. Then Prendergast and Secor took No. 15 with a birdie, Gravel-Coursol and Nelson No. 16 with a par to square things again, and the CSU teammates went ahead one last time with Secor’s 15-foot birdie on the par-5 17th. The teams halved No. 18 with pars, giving the victory to the two Rams, who were 1 under par for the round.

In the round of 16, Prendergast and Secor won the first hole with a birdie and led throughout, making seven birdies and one bogey in 16 holes.

In Wednesday’s semifinals, the Rams will face 13th-seeded Megan Furtney of Chicago and Erica Shepherd of Greenwood, Ind., two future Duke teammates. Then the two semifinal winners will square off Wednesday afternoon for the national title. Shepherd won the 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior.

One Win, One Loss https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/04/30/one-win-one-loss/ Mon, 30 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/04/30/one-win-one-loss/ Colorado State University teammates Katrina Prendergast and Ellen Secor will make a return trip to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship, while Colorado high school golfers Hailey Schalk and Charlotte Hillary fell just short in Monday’s match play round of 32 in Tarzana, Calif.

Prendergast and Secor, who tied for sixth place in the stroke-play portion of the event, defeated sisters Calynne and Chandler Rosholt of Cedar Park, Texas, 4 and 2 in the round of 32.

Meanwhile, four-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Stasi of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Dawn Woodard of Greenville, S.C., fended off Schalk and Hillary, the top two finishers in last year’s AJGA Hale Irwin Colorado Junior, 1 up.

Despite Schalk feeling ill before and during Monday’s match, three times she and Hillary rallied from a deficit to square the score, including coming from 2 down after eight holes. But the Coloradans, who made it into the national field after originally being alternates, never could take the lead. They won the 17th hole with a birdie to pull within 1 down, but the teams halved No. 18 with pars to give Stasi and Woodard the victory.

Schalk and Hillary, who each made three birdies on Monday, finished 1 under par for the day in the better-ball compeitition.

As for Prendergast and Secor, both set to compete in the Women’s NCAA Regionals as individuals, they won the first hole with a birdie and never looked back. They were 3 up after six holes and finished 4 under par for 16 holes.

Prendergast and Secor (pictured in a USGA photo, with Secor at left) also made it to the round of 16 last year. That was when they fell 4 and 3 to 2016 U.S. Curtis Cup team members Monica Vaughn and Bailey Tardy. Vaughn would go on to win the NCAA Division I individual title last May.

Meanwhile, stroke play medalists Annick Haczkiewicz and Sydney Smith of Las Vegas were ousted in the round of 32, 3 and 1 by Katherine Gravel-Coursol of Canada and Paige Nelson of Farmers Branch, Texas. Smith is a future CSU women’s golfer.

Both the round of 16 and the quarterfinals will be contested on Tuesday.

On to Match Play https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/04/29/on-to-match-play/ Sun, 29 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/04/29/on-to-match-play/ Mission No. 1 accomplished.

Both teams with strong Colorado ties competing in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship made match play — and did it with ease.

Colorado State University teammates Katrina Prendergast and Ellen Secor picked up on Sunday where they left off on Saturday and finished tied for sixth in the stroke-play portion of the event at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.

And Colorado residents Charlotte Hillary of Cherry Hills Village and Hailey Schalk of Erie placed 15th out of the 64 teams in the field. (The Coloradans are pictured, with Schalk at left.)

The top 32 teams after two days of stroke play advance to match play, with the round of 32 set for Monday.

Prendergast and Secor, who went to the round of 16 in this event last year, played their last 12 holes on Saturday in 5 under par. Then on Sunday, they shot a 5-under-par 67, leaving them at 7-under 137 overall in the better-ball event. Annick Haczkiewicz and Sydney Smith of Las Vegas earned medalist honors at 134. Smith will play her college golf at CSU.

In round 2, Prendergast and Secor made an eagle, four birdies and a bogey. They were 5 under par in the final four holes of the front nine.

Meanwhile, Hillary and Schalk are making the most of getting a spot in the national championship after originally being alternates.

The two Colorado high school sophomores — Hillary at Kent Denver and Schalk at Holy Family — carded their second straight 2-under-par 70 on Sunday, though this one had more ups and downs. After going bogey-free on Saturday, they had an eagle (on the 335-yard, par-4 fifth hole), three birdies and three bogeys on Sunday.

Schalk was the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado’s Girls Player of the Year in 2017. Hillary qualified for the U.S. Girls’ Junior last year. And both players were among those who represented Colorado in the Girls Junior America’s Cup.

Strong Starts https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/04/28/strong-starts-4/ Sat, 28 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/04/28/strong-starts-4/ Hailey Schalk of Erie and Charlotte Hillary of Cherry Hills Village are among the youngest teams at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship, but they certainly didn’t look the part in Saturday’s first round at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif.

The two high school sophomores, who finished 1-2 in the 3A Girls State Tournament last year, made their national Women’s Four-Ball debut on Saturday by shooting a bogey-free 2-under-par 70.

That solid showing left the Coloradans in good shape to advance to match play. They share 16th place after the first round of stroke play, and will need to finish among the top 32 teams after 36 holes in order to make the match-play portion of the event.

The two, who earned a spot in the field after originally being alternates, made two birdies and 16 pars on Friday. They trail leaders Yachun Chang of Chinese Taipei and Yei Ye of China by six strokes.

Schalk and Hillary (pictured, with Hillary at left) are the first pair of Colorado residents to compete at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball since 2015.

Meanwhile, Colorado State University teammates Katrina Prendergast and Ellen Secor, competing in this event together for the second straight year, also opened with a 70 — albeit a far more eventful one. The two, who both recently earned spots as individuals in the Women’s NCAA Regionals, started poorly on Saturday, standing 3 over par through six holes. But they played their last dozen holes in a stellar 5 under, including carding birdies on Nos. 17 and 18.

Prendergast and Secor advanced to the match play round of 16 at last year’s national Four-Ball.

CU’s Brittany Fan and Esther Lee, who shared medalist honors in the stroke-play portion of the event at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, fell 3 and 2 in the round of 16 to Georgians Sammi Lee and Mary Ellen Shuman. Fan and Lee were 3 under for 16 holes and had the match all square through 10. But Lee and Shuman won three of the next five holes — two with birdies and one with par — to take command.

Meanwhile, 20th-seeded Katrina Prendergast and Ellen Secor of CSU were ousted 4 and 3 by fourth-seeded Bailey Tardy of Norcross, Ga., and Monica Vaughn of Reedsport, Ore. Prendergast and Secor won the first hole with a birdie and were just 1 down after nine, at which point they were 6 under par. But Tardy and Vaughn birdied two of the next three holes and closed out the match on No. 15, which was halved with birdies. Prendergast and Secor were 4 under par for 15 holes.

Fast Starts https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2016/05/21/fast-starts-2/ Sat, 21 May 2016 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2016/05/21/fast-starts-2/ Two teams that include Coloradans are in the top five after Saturday’s first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y.

Braden Baer of Westminster and Cole Nygren of Longmont fired a 6-under-par 64, as did Alex Buecking of Columbine Valley and Jason Enloe of Dallas, the SMU men’s golf coach (the two were teammates at SMU). That leaves both teams in a tie for fifth place, two out of the lead.

After Sunday’s second round, the top 32 teams will advance to match play.

Buecking made three birdies in four holes on the back nine Saturday, holing a 40-yard shot and a 50-foot putt in the process.

“Every time I went over and hugged him and said, ‘thanks,'” Enloe told USGA.org. “We had three big group hugs over the last five holes.”

Nygren and Baer likewise totaled seven birdies on the day.

Here are the scores for all the teams with major Colorado ties who are in the field:

5. Alex Buecking (Columbine Valley)/Jason Enloe (Dallas) 64
5. Braden Baer (Westminster)/Cole Nygren (Longmont) 64
57. Tom Hart (Denver)/Jonathan Marsico (Denver) 70
84. Benjamin Sherlund (Denver)/Zach Fowlds (Lone Tree) 72
84. Former CSU golfer Jeff Fujimoto/Patrick Moore (Scottsdale, Ariz.) 72
97. Kyle Danford (Fort Collins) /David Johnson (Fort Collins) 73

Meanwhile, the only team in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball in Streamsong, Fla., that features a Coloradan is in 46th place after Saturday’s opening round.

Tiffany Maurycy of Denver teamed up with Amy Ellertson of Charlottesville, Va., to fire a 2-over-par 74. After making two birdies on Saturday, they’ll need to climb into the top 32 after Sunday’s second round to advance to match play.

Teaming Up https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2015/04/28/teaming-up/ Tue, 28 Apr 2015 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2015/04/28/teaming-up/

It will be four-ball galore over the next two weeks, both locally and nationally.

Between now and May 13, four big four-ball championships will be contested in Colorado or by the USGA, with Colorado competitors involved. First up are the separate CGA Four-Ball and Senior Four-Ball tournaments, the first CGA championships of 2015, set for Friday through Sunday (May 1-3). Then the inaugural U.S. Amateur Four-Ball will be held May 2-6 in San Francisco. Last but not least, the first U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball will be played May 9-13 in Bandon, Ore.

(It should be noted that though the CWGA won’t have a four-ball event in the next couple of weeks, it holds three four-ball tournaments annually: the Mashie, Brassie and Niblick.

The men’s and women’s U.S. Four-Balls are the first additions to the USGA championship schedule since 1987.

Here’s a brief rundown of the four-ball events — which are essentially two-person better-balls, either in stroke play or match play — that are set for the next two weeks:

— CGA Four-Ball at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster and CGA Senior Four-Ball at Todd Creek Golf Club in Thornton, each 54-hole event running Friday through Sunday (May 1-3).

A total of 92 players (46 teams) are registered for the Four-Ball at Legacy Ridge. While 2014 champions Keith Humerickhouse and Jared Bickling won’t return as a team — Humerickhouse is in the field for the U.S. Four-Ball — Bickling will play at Legacy Ridge with new partner Stephen Baxter.

Other former champions in the field are Jon Lindstrom (2002 and ’12), Steve Irwin (2004 and ’09), Alex Buecking (2009), Dave Johnson (2006), Jim Doidge (2005) and Pat Diaz (2004). Irwin will team with Diaz again this year. Doidge will partner with Michael Harrington, the 2014 CGA Player of the Year.

In the Senior Four-Ball at Todd Creek, 102 competitors (51 teams) 50 and older are signed up. Included are defending champions David Delich and Bruce Hogg, who prevailed by three strokes last year. Also back are 2013 winners Kelly Crone and Larry Netherton, who also claimed the title in 2009.

Other former champs in the field are Daniel Dymerski (2012), John Applegate (2011), Sean Forey (2003 and ’08) and Scott Radcliffe (2003). Forey and Radcliffe will team up again this year.

— U.S. Amateur Four-Ball at the Olympic Club in San Francisco May 2-6.

A total of 4,468 golfers (2,234 teams) submitted entries, and qualifying was held at 51 sites from last August through March.

The field at the Olympic Club will feature 128 teams, which will play 36 holes of stroke play, with the top 32 teams advancing to match play beginning on May 4.

Five teams in the championship include at least one Coloradan:

Robert Polk of Parker and Bill Fowler of Lakewood

Alex Kephart of Colorado Springs and former Colorado Springs resident Nick Tarasiewicz

Keith Humerickhouse of Eagle and Tom Abell of Oregon, Wis.

Jeff Chapman of Denver and Andrew Tapia of Raton, N.M.

Gus Lundquist of Parker and Trevor Sluman of Rochester, N.Y.

Polk and Fowler, both 50-somethings, shared medalist honors in qualifying at Colorado Golf Club with Kephart and Tarasiewicz last September. (The four are pictured together above.) Polk, 59, will be the oldest player in the field at the Olympic Club.

Lundquist and Sluman are University of Louisville teammates, playing for coach Mark Crabtree, a Colorado Golf Hall of Famer. Sluman is a nephew of Champions Tour player Jeff Sluman. They were medalists in an Oct. 8 qualifier in Mason, Ohio.

Humerickhouse and Abell were medalists in an Oct. 1 qualifier in Hartford, Wis.

— U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball at Bandon Dunes in Oregon May 9-13.

Qualifying for the inaugural Women’s Four-Ball took place at 28 sites from August through March.

Jennifer Kupcho of Westminster and Gillian Vance of Lakewood (left) will take a break from the high school season to play in the national championship. They shared medalist honors last October in a qualifier at Heritage at Westmoor in Westminster.

Kupcho, the 2014 CWGA Player of the Year, will play college golf at Wake Forest in the fall, while Vance will be on the University of Colorado roster.

All told at Bandon, 64 teams will play two rounds of stroke play, with the low 32 teams advancing to match play, which begins May 11.
