The 103 teams that competed in this week’s CGA Mashie Championship included many friends and some blood relatives that paired up.

The championship flight title match on Wednesday featured that and more.

Besides the aforementioned, the finalists included two sets of college teammates, as well as roommates, sisters and even twins.

At the end of the day at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster, Colorado resident Delaney Elliott and Montana State teammate and roommate Kelly Hooper defeated Wyoming teammates, sisters and twins Kaylee and Megan Knadler, 2 and 1 to earn the title after three days of competition. (The champions are pictured, with Hooper at left.)

“It’s awesome. We had such a fun time out there,” said Hooper, who lives in Spokane, Wash., and was playing in the Mashie for the first time. “I just came down for a visit. We thought this would be a fun tournament to play in together. I came down last year and played in the (CWGA Stroke Play), but this is more like a team event.”

Elliott and Hooper birdied three of the first five holes — with the putts ranging from 15 to 30 feet — to take an early 3-up lead in the finals of the four-ball match play event.

“We had to make quite a few birdies at the beginning and they were making some birdies too,” said Elliott (left), a Monarch High School graduate who lives in Superior. “Every time we made one, we both had an opportunity. It was just whoever made the putt first.”

The MSU teammates, the top seeds this week, eventually led by as much as 4 up after Hooper two-putted for birdie on the par-5 11th hole.

“It was nice to get off to a good start,” Hooper said. “It was nice to be comfortable and have the lead.”

But the Knadlers, who are Phoenix residents, rallied, with Kaylee making a 7-foot birdie on 12 and Megan a 2-foot birdie on the tough 14th hole to cut the deficit to 2 down. But the teams halved the next three holes, with the long-hitting Hooper clinching the victory by making a 4-foot par putt on No. 17.

The Knadlers (below), who are living in Laramie over the summer, came to play in the Mashie in part because they love the weather in the area and they have friends and family living in Colorado.

“We also came out here to win,” Kaylee Knadler said. “And we took a salty second.

“We just didn’t make the putts where they needed to be made. We weren’t very clutch on the putts.”

Elliott and Hooper were a better-ball 4 under par for 17 holes on Wednesday, finishing with five birdies and a bogey. The Knadlers were 3 under.

Elliott and Hooper not only didn’t trail in Wednesday’s final, but that was true in all three of their matches at the Mashie, which was played at both Coal Creek Golf Course in Louisville and Legacy Ridge.

The title was the first in a CGA/CWGA women’s championship for both Elliott and Hooper. Both competed in the CWGA Stroke Play last year, tying for fifth place. Megan Knadler shared second in that event.

Among those on hand to watch some of Wednesday’s action at Legacy Ridge were CGA co-president Joe McCleary and executive director Ed Mate.

Here are the winners of the Wednesday finals in all 13 flights — for both championship and consolation brackets in each case:

Heating Up https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2018/04/10/heating-up/ Tue, 10 Apr 2018 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2018/04/10/heating-up/ Reigning CGA Amateur champion Glenn Workman, playing in the next-to-last regular-season tournament of his college career, finished a career-best sixth Tuesday in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Chandler, Ariz.

Workman, a University of Wyoming senior from Pueblo West, went 68-68 in the last two rounds after opening with a 74. That gave him a 6-under-par 210 total, which left him five strokes behind individual champion Sean Meehan of Texas-San Antonio.

Workman (pictured), who won the state amateur stroke-play titles in both Colorado and Wyoming last summer, made six birdies and two bogeys in the final round on Tuesday.

The showing marked Workman’s first individual top-10 finish of his career in a major college tournament. The Coloradan was competing only as an individual this week in Arizona, but two teammates tied for third on Tuesday — John Murdock and Aaron Lickteig — both one stroke ahead of Workman.

Also posting a top-10 college finish on Tuesday was the University of Northern Colorado’s Nicole Polivchak, a freshman from Sarasota, Fla. Polivchak tied for seventh individually and helped spark UNC, which placed fifth out of a 16-team field at the Bobcat Spring Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz.

Polivchak went 74-73-74 for a 5-over-par 221 total, which put her eight strokes behind champion Tara Finigan of Portland State.

Workman-like Effort https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2017/08/04/workman-like-effort/ Fri, 04 Aug 2017 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2017/08/04/workman-like-effort/ With a dwindling number of players under par, Glenn Workman of Desert Hawk at Pueblo West grabbed the lead at the halfway point of the CGA Amateur at the Sonnenalp Club in Edwards.

Workman, set to begin his senior season as a University of Wyoming golfer, is the only player in the 82-man field to have posted two rounds in the 60s. His 3-under-par 68 on Friday left him at 5-under 137 overall, which is good for a three-stroke advantage.

The winner of the Wyoming State Amateur and the low amateur in the Wyoming State Open this summer, Workman (pictured) eagled the 553-yard sixth hole at Sonnenalp and added three birdies and two bogeys in round 2. Through 36 holes, he’s racked up two eagles and nine birdies.

University of Colorado golfer John Souza of Colorado National Golf Club finished in second place for the second straight day as he shares that position with Tristin Goodwin of Wellshire Golf Course.

Souza started round 2 with a double-bogey 7, but backed that up with a birdie 2 and carded a 1-over 72 after playing his last three holes in 2 under par on Friday.

Goodwin made a major charge on the front nine Friday, posting a 6-under-par 30 after concluding that side with four straight birdies. But a double bogey and two bogeys on the back nine resulted in 69.

Cole Nygren of Colorado National, who finished fifth at this event last year, and University of Northern Colorado golfer Sam Marley of South Suburban Golf Course are the only other players under par, sharing fourth place at 1-under 141.

Five players are five back of Workman, including 2015 champion and 2017 CGA Match Play winner Chris Korte of Lone Tree Golf Club and the University of Denver. Also at even-par 142 is two-time U.S. Amateur qualifier Jake Staiano of Glenmoor Country Club, the Colorado State University golfer who finished eighth at last month’s CoBank Colorado Open and shot 69 on Friday despite a triple bogey. Likewise at 142 are first-round leader Kyle Pearson of Meridian Golf Club (75 on Friday), David Leede of Cherry Hills Country Club (72) and Brittain Walton of Collindale Golf Club (72).

The field was cut after 36 holes to the low 40 players and ties. Defending champion Colin Prater of The Broadmoor Golf Club made the cut on the number by shooting a 72 on Friday for a 150 total.

Play will continue through Sunday.

Clean Sweep for Stancato, Kershisnik https://www.wpt-6.colo.golf/2013/08/20/clean-sweep-for-stancato-kershisnik/ Tue, 20 Aug 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.colo.golf/2013/08/20/clean-sweep-for-stancato-kershisnik/ Samantha Stancato and Kathleen Kershisnik weren’t happy with the results — a lopsided American loss — when they attended the Solheim Cup together at Colorado Golf Club over the weekend. But the inspiration they drew from watching some of the best women’s golfers in the world certainly turned out to be a big plus.

The two Coloradans, who both play golf for the University of Wyoming, parlayed their Solheim experience into a victory in the CWGA Brassie Championship, which concluded Tuesday at The Club at Flying Horse in Colorado Springs. (Stancato is pictured, at left, with Kershisnik.)

The victory gives the two Cowgirls a sweep of the CWGA’s four-ball tournaments in 2013. Two months after claiming the title in the CWGA Mashie — a four-ball match-play event — they won by five Tuesday in the Brassie, a four-ball stroke-play tournament.

Watching the Solheim Cup “was awesome, even though the U.S. lost,” said Kershisnik, a 19-year-old two-time state high school runner-up from Columbine Country Club. “It was so much fun watching the team format. There’s a lot you can learn from the attitude the (U.S. and Europeans teams) had — congratulating each other and pumping each other up.”

Kershisnik and Stancato can relate. A year ago, they didn’t know each other, but they became teammates at Wyoming. And now they’re going to be roommates; in fact, they’re moving back up to Laramie on Wednesday.

But on Tuesday, they capped off the summer season by shooting a best-ball 5-under-par 67, giving them a 4-under 140 total for two rounds at Flying Horse. That strong finish allowed them to leave the other three first-round co-leaders in the dust on day 2.

Four-time Brassie champion Christie Austin, the former USGA Executive Committee member from Cherry Hills Country Club, teamed up with two-time winner Cindy Pallatino of CommonGround Golf Course to finish five strokes behind following a final-round 72. Coincidentally, Austin was also runner-up to Stancato and Kershisnik at the CWGA Mashie, but her partner then was Janet Moore.

Tying for third Tuesday, 10 strokes behind the winners, were Sue Davis of Saddle Rock and Jessi McVay of CommonGround, and Saddle Rock golfers Laurie Steenrod and Lisa Stone. Davis and McVay shot 73 Tuesday, while Steenrod and Stone posted a 77.

The CWGA championship was the second each for Stancato and Kershisnik, with them teaming up on both occasions.

“This feels pretty good,” said Stancato, a 20-year-old from Patty Jewett Golf Course who qualified for the 2011 U.S. Women’s Amateur. “It gives us a nice confidence boost going into the college season. I wanted to play in something before (the college year started), so I called Kathleen and she was excited.

“It’s really fun to play with all the ladies. It’s a lot different than college, but just as fun.”

On Tuesday, with Stancato shooting 70 on her own ball, she and Kershisnik started the round with a best-ball bogey but went 6 under par over the next 12 holes to pull away.

“We definitely played more as a team today,” said Stancato, who was playing in her hometown of Colorado Springs. “Yesterday when we messed up it seemed to be on the same hole.”
